Risk-Based Deposit Insurance, Deposit Rates And Bank Failures: Evidence From Russia, Lucy Chernykh, Vladimir Kotomin May 2022

Risk-Based Deposit Insurance, Deposit Rates And Bank Failures: Evidence From Russia, Lucy Chernykh, Vladimir Kotomin

Faculty Publications – Finance, Insurance, and Law

Using the Russian banking system as a laboratory, we study the effect of a switch from fixed-rate deposit insurance to a risk-based system with premia tied to insured deposit rates offered by a bank. After the switch, increases in bank risk lead to reduced reliance on insured deposits, private banks without excessive capital stop raising insured deposit rates to fund loan growth, and the cost of insured deposits becomes a predictor of bank failures (beyond the CAMEL variables). Offering insured deposit rates notably above the market becomes a last resort to banks. The results suggest that risk-based deposit insurance schemes …

Being Persuaded To Sleep With Someone In Order To Have A Place To Sleep: The Eleventh Circuit’S Analysis Of Sexual Harassment Claims Under The Fair Housing Act, Stella Preston

Mercer Law Review

One of the fundamental ideals the United States was built upon is that its citizens must have their rights and freedoms protected. Historically, however, there have been numerous groups of individuals who have had their civil rights infringed upon, and what is worse, not protected by the legal and political institutions of the country. What the United States is experiencing now is an increase in the widespread fight for those who have historically been discriminated against in one way or another. Citizens these days seem less apt to sit back and silently let injustices go on without any repercussions. In …

No More “Heads Defendants Win, Tails Plaintiffs Lose”: How The Georgia Supreme Court’S Relation Back Decision In Cannon Rebalances Pleading Power, Jordan Lipp

Mercer Law Review

Imagine your daughter dying in a high-speed police chase—when she was not even the driver that evaded police or caused the crash. You want to hold someone accountable, but you do not know who the right person is if you sue: the deputy, the sheriff in his personal capacity, the sheriff in his official capacity, the county, the sheriff’s office, the county commissioners, the insurer of the police car? You sue the wrong one, and it is too late. Now what?

Thankfully for you, Georgia has forgiving pleading standards. Relation back is a legal fiction that assumes a claim was …

As of 2019, the global youth population between the ages of 15 and 24 was 1.2 billion and growing (UNDESA, 2019). A sizable number of youth face discrimination and marginalization daily, often based on their social identities and related interlocking systems of power and oppression (Brewster & Molina, 2021). Minoritized youth, particularly, find themselves trapped in culturally manufactured master narratives that serve to reproduce the very systems of privilege that exist in their country (Liu, 2017). Considering these master narratives can be a significant step in our work with marginalized youth. Building on the contributions of leading scholars in career …

Human Behavior Modeling In Long Videos: Drowsiness Detection And Action Segmentation, Reza Ghoddoosian

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

"In this thesis we focus on two instances of human behavior modeling in long untrimmed videos: drowsiness detection, and action segmentation. In the first section, we focus on drowsiness detection. Specifically, we introduce a large and public real-life dataset and a baseline temporal model to classify drowsiness into three stages of alert, low vigilant, or drowsy. In the second section, we study action segmentation in instructional videos under weak supervision. In order to save time and cost, weakly supervised methods are trained based on only video-level action sequences as opposed to a fully supervised method which is trained using frame-level …

The scale of the electronic power distribution systems needed ranges from those in very small handheld consumer electronic devices all the way up to those needed in large buildings, ships, and cities. The energy supplied within these power distribution systems can come from many different generation sources that operate either individually or simultaneously. When power electronics are controlled properly, simultaneous generation sources can be employed in a way that optimizes them according to the user’s desired …

Learning Topology Preserving Embeddings For Speeding Up Nearest Neighbor Retrieval, Mason Lary May 2022

Learning Topology Preserving Embeddings For Speeding Up Nearest Neighbor Retrieval, Mason Lary

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Given a database of objects and a query object, it’s possible to gather a number of the closest neighbors to the query object. This operation is important to a number of diverse fields such as computer vision, content- based information retrieval, and chemistry. However, distance measures used to determine neighbors can cause queries to be computationally expensive, either because the distance measure is complex or because it is nonmetric and prevents efficient indexing methods. This work presents novel methods of triplet mining that enable neural networks using triplet loss to learn the manifold that data resides in. These neural networks …

A Combinatorial Approach To Fairness Testing Of Machine Learning Models, Ankita Ramjibhai Patel May 2022

A Combinatorial Approach To Fairness Testing Of Machine Learning Models, Ankita Ramjibhai Patel

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Machine Learning (ML) models could exhibit biased behavior, or algorithmic discrimination, resulting in unfair or discriminatory outcomes. The bias in the ML model could emanate from various factors such as the training dataset, the choice of the ML algorithm, or the hyperparameters used to train the ML model. In addition to evaluating the model’s correctness, it is essential to test ML models for fair and unbiased behavior. In this thesis, we present a combinatorial testing-based approach to perform fairness testing of ML models. Our approach is model agnostic and evaluates fairness violations of a pre-trained ML model in a two-step …

The Interaction Of Angiotensin I And Ii On Calcified Aortic Valve Cells, Fah Sysavanh May 2022

The Interaction Of Angiotensin I And Ii On Calcified Aortic Valve Cells, Fah Sysavanh

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cardiovascular diseases affect the older population with limited treatments available. Aortic valve stenosis is a cardiovascular disease in which the aortic valve narrows, causing blood flow constriction and calcification.¹ The only treatment is to replace the valve, which can be costly and lead to other health complications.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a pathway that helps with maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. Angiotensin I (ANGI) and II (ANGII) are hormones in the RAS that cause an increase in inflammation, stress, and blood pressure by binding to the Angiotensin Type 1 Receptor (AT1R).¹ Gelatin-based valve thin film (vTF) platforms were fabricated to investigate …

Alternative Fixation Of Venous Valves For Bioprosthetic Applications, Makenzie Kapales May 2022

Alternative Fixation Of Venous Valves For Bioprosthetic Applications, Makenzie Kapales

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Venous valve failure allows for the retrograde, or backward, flow of blood into the lower extremities, which leads to Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). CVI infringes upon quality of life through ulceration and can result in death due to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), or blood clots, causing pulmonary embolism. A successful treatment of CVI restores valve function and prevents retrograde blood flow; however, current bioprosthetic venous valves exhibit low patency and high calcification. To improve upon bioprosthetic venous valves and CVI treatment, the University of Arkansas’s Cardiovascular Biomechanics Lab conducts studies with the purpose of comparing the properties and performance of …
