Water electrolysis has been proposed as a renewable source of hydrogen, a possible replacement to harmful fossil fuels. This process can be broken down into two half reactions, the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction. Because the oxygen evolution reaction has slow kinetics and a high overpotential to overcome, a catalyst is needed to speed up the kinetics and ensure faster and more efficient production of molecular hydrogen. This paper examines the music of Hildegard von Bingen considering the shocking lack of female composers to come after her, particularly within the genre of sacred music. It begins by exploring the history of women and liturgical music in the Early Church before analyzing Hildegard’s prolific music career, including the vast range of genres she employed, the creativity and complexity of her compositions, her divinely feminine lyrics, and her theology of music and embodiment. Introduction: The combined findings of oligodontia, mandibular hypoplasia and congenital malformation of the tongue (hypoplasia) is relatively rare in children. This presentation discusses the case of a 6-year-old female patient who presented to the dental clinic at The Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for emergent care secondary to gross dental caries. Additional findings at the initial visit were that of oligodontia, microglossia, micrognathia, and mandibular hypoplasia. A review of the medical history indicated that due to the physical anomalies noted at birth, a genetic microarray was completed indicating some variants of unknow clinical significance. These anomalies can be isolated findings however, they may also indicate minor or major associated syndromes and identification of these findings are essential to providing comprehensive care for patients. Dentin Dysplasia Type II is a rare autosomal dominant disease resulting from a disruption in the apposition stage of cell development. “When the tide is out, the table is set” is a familiar saying among Native communities on the Northwest Coast of North America. This phrase encapsulates traditional ecological knowledge passed down for generations concerning intertidal marine resources. Recent archaeological excavations of shellfish gathering camps at Labouchere Bay confirm that ancient people may have followed similar principles throughout the Holocene (c.9,500 -2,500 years ago). For millennia, shellfish have been a highly reliable food source that helped support sedentary fisher-hunter-gatherer settlements. This dissertation examines middle-class religiosity in Brazil through an analysis of the birth of a new religious organization, the Brazilian Orthodox Church. I investigate how the performance of “authentic tradition” (tradição verdadeira) orients and authenticates new middle-class subjectivities. In considering the unprecedented recent boom of middle classes worldwide, I explore how and why members of the growing Brazilian middle class, whose livelihoods are increasingly oriented around international finance capital and foreign corporate marketing, locate sources of the authentic beyond given, national boundaries. This dissertation uses porous silicon as a material platform to explore novel optical effects in three domains: (i) It studies dispersion engineering in integrated waveguides to achieve high performance group index sensing. With proper design parameters, the sensor waveguides can theoretically achieve 6 times larger group index shift compared to the actual bulk effective refractive index shift. We demonstrate the guided mode confinement factor to be a key parameter in design and implementation of these waveguides. Heart failure (HF) is a chronic, progressive condition defined as an abnormality of cardiac function with the inability of the heart muscle to pump enough blood to meet the body’s requirements for metabolism. HF has various contributing pathologies, including hypertension (86 million Americans), myocardial infarction (MI, 800,000 Americans per year and 300,000 recurrent infarctions each year), both of which promote fibrosis. Myocardial fibrosis contributes to left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and is histologically defined by excessive deposition of fibrous tissue relative to the mass of cardiomyocytes within the myocardial tissue. Explicit convergence rates to equilibrium are established for non reversible Markov chains not having an atom via coupling methods. We consider two Markov chains having the same transition function but different initial conditions on the same probability space, that is, a coupling. A random time is constructed so that subsequent to the random time the two processes are identical. Exploiting a shadowing condition, we show that it is possible to bound the tail distribution of the random time using only one of the chains. Dogs provide an excellent model for human hereditary disease research; thus, the development of canine genomic tools has been prioritized in recent years. Today, SNP arrays, multiple genome assemblies, and multi-breed reference panels containing whole genome resequencing (WGS) data from hundreds of canids are available to facilitate genome-wide genotyping in the dog. Herein, a variety of genome-wide techniques are employed to identify the genetic factors underlying congenital idiopathic megaesophagus (CIM) in two breeds, German shepherd dogs (GSDs) and Great Danes, and startle disease in Spanish greyhounds.

In the last 20 years, critics have contributed new insights into the character development, overall messages, themes, and other literary aspects of James Joyce’s works by focusing on their ethical implications. By following an intertextual method and by performing close readings of Joyce’s texts, I try to fill a gap in the scholarly literature by adding a related focus on ghosts to the conversation about Joyce’s ethics and those of his characters.
