Beirut's Burden, Joelle Osta May 2022

Beirut's Burden, Joelle Osta

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This is a proposal for a waste management facility to be built in the busy city of Beirut to educate the public and prevent further damage to the environment‭.‬

This facility collects‭, ‬transports‭, ‬processes‭, ‬recycles‭, ‬and monitors waste materials from both businesses and private residences‭. ‬There is a sorting and processing wing to separate waste into different categories‭. ‬

Proper incineration of certain types of waste will generate green energy and the gases emitted from the decomposition of trash in landfills can be used as a renewable energy source‭. ‬Through the use of extremely high temperatures‭, ‬trash is converted into …

Skins+Fabrications: Addressing Fashion And Clothing Waste, Renee Palmer May 2022

Skins+Fabrications: Addressing Fashion And Clothing Waste, Renee Palmer

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Articles of clothing; they are the second organ, the Second Skin. Their functions are to protect the body from the harsh external elements and create a sense of design with Fashion—the same as exterior facades on a building. However, where architecture and Fashion differ is sustainability.

The Global fashion industry contributes 10% of greenhouse emissions. From that 10%, about 13 million tonnes of clothing waste ends up in landfills or burned. Most of the waste comes from the Fast Fashion Industry, which sees cheap labor from underdeveloped countries to maximize profits. These companies will spend a good portion of their …

The purpose of this thesis project is to answer the question, “How can Contemporary Architecture address the identities of Indigenous people of North America?” Within this thesis project will be a comprehensive Cultural Center design that addresses a specific tribe’s needs in the case of physical needs, mental needs, and most importantly needs of identity. The specific tribe will be the Tachi Yokuts of the San Joaquin Valley, whom used to be the largest tribe in California before colonizer invasion. Since the identity of Indigenous populations in North America have been stripped and forcibly forgotten it is most important to …

Urban Arteries, Erin Machado May 2022

Urban Arteries, Erin Machado

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

45% of Americans have no access to public transportation (25). The common Atlantan commuter alone will spend an average of 72 hours per year in traffic congestion (16). Both of these statistics include the workers, attendees, and residents of the Battery (home of Truist Park of the Atlanta Braves baseball team). While mass transit allows for the commuter to become freed of their dependence on individual vehicles; historical, racial, and economic stigmatization as well as basic design inefficiencies of mass transportation systems discredits their potent opportunity of becoming a consensus in design between economic, environmental, and social sustainability. When the …

A Quarry In The Urban Landscape: Building Down In Architecture, Derrick Kafunda May 2022

A Quarry In The Urban Landscape: Building Down In Architecture, Derrick Kafunda

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

A quarry is an excavation or open pit mine that does not mine for minerals like copper, gold diamonds or any other precious gemstones but for materials that are mainly used in the building industry from the surface of the earth. As this process takes place the dust from this process is released in the atmosphere and when the process is complete the pit is usually not buried. What usually remains are the left-over debris and water from the rain which forms an artificial lake. If unattended, Pit Lakes, as they are called, become dumping grounds. This research will aim …

The Monument And Other Stories, Allison Parker May 2022

The Monument And Other Stories, Allison Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The stories in this manuscript are populated with men and women laborers who grind and hustle their way through life and relationships. The particular interest of this collection is to examine how women navigate communities that honor masculine work and disregard feminine work and how these women respond to, give in to, or resist standards of masculine and feminine work. These stories are written in a third-person point of view with special attention to the voice of the narrator to investigate the storytelling traditions of rural communities, particularly storytelling that happens on the job. The treatment of voice in this …

Prototyping Attainability: A Guide For Incremental Density In Communities, Quinlan Mcfadden

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

In the absence of direct public investment solutions, Prototyping Attainability, explores how the combination of building typologies and land uses can achieve attainable housing strategies by striking a balance between shared community spaces and optimizing density, without disrupting the existing residential landscape. Through this exploration of research and design, strategic changes in zoning, regulation and typologies will be brought forward to aid the framework process of solutions to the housing crisis not only within Nebraskan communities, but in communities nationwide.

Age And Water-Quality Characteristics Of Groundwater Discharge To The South Loup River, Nebraska, 2019, Christopher M. Hobza, John E. Solder May 2022

Age And Water-Quality Characteristics Of Groundwater Discharge To The South Loup River, Nebraska, 2019, Christopher M. Hobza, John E. Solder

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

Streams in the Loup River Basin are sensitive to groundwater withdrawals because of the close hydrologic connection between groundwater and surface water. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Upper Loup and Lower Loup Natural Resources Districts, and the Nebraska Environmental Trust, studied the age and water-quality characteristics of groundwater near the South Loup River to assess the possible effects of a multiyear drought on streamflow.

Groundwater sampled in wells screened in Quaternary-age deposits displayed a wide range of mean ages (27 to 2,100 years), fraction modern, and susceptibility index values. Groundwater with higher concentrations of chloride and higher …

The Impact Of Interactions Among Native Grassland Species: A Study Of Interactions Between Two Invasive Species (Bromus Tectorum And Setaria Faberi) And Two Native Species (Helianthus Annuus And Rudbeckia Hirta), Nash Leef May 2022

The Impact Of Interactions Among Native Grassland Species: A Study Of Interactions Between Two Invasive Species (Bromus Tectorum And Setaria Faberi) And Two Native Species (Helianthus Annuus And Rudbeckia Hirta), Nash Leef

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Allelopathy is a description of an interaction between two plant species, usually negative, that impacts their growth or germination. There has been ample data published regarding the impact of allelopathic species in agricultural settings, but little attention has been given to the potential interactions between invasive and native species. Two culprits that have employed allelopathy to great effect in agricultural settings are cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and giant foxtail (Setaria faberi). This study posits that allelopathic interactions, similar to those found in agriculture, are occurring between native and invasive species on the Great Plains.

A set of greenhouse trials was established …

Karst Spring Discharge Modeling Based On Deep Learning Using Spatially Distributed Input Data, Andreas Wunsch, Tanja Liesch, Guillaume Cinkus, Nataša Ravbar, Zhao Chen, Naomi Mazzilli, Hervé Jourde, Nico Goldscheider May 2022

Karst Spring Discharge Modeling Based On Deep Learning Using Spatially Distributed Input Data, Andreas Wunsch, Tanja Liesch, Guillaume Cinkus, Nataša Ravbar, Zhao Chen, Naomi Mazzilli, Hervé Jourde, Nico Goldscheider

KIP Articles

Despite many existing approaches, modeling karst water resources remains challenging as conventional approaches usually heavily rely on distinct system knowledge. Artificial neural networks (ANNs), however, require only little prior knowledge to automatically establish an input–output relationship. For ANN modeling in karst, the temporal and spatial data availability is often an important constraint, as usually no or few climate stations are located within or near karst spring catchments. Hence, spatial coverage is often not satisfactory and can result in substantial uncertainties about the true conditions in the catchment, leading to lower model performance. To overcome these problems, we apply convolutional neural …

Understanding The Transport And Chemistry Of Indoor Air During Wildfire Smoke Events With Elliott Gall, Elliott T. Gall

PDXPLORES Podcast

Dr. Elliott Gall, Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department at Portland State University, studies indoor air quality in order to better understand how to improve building designs to promote health.

Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity. So, too, are wildfire smoke events. Smoke from wildfires pose serious health risks. That is why the Environmental Protection Agency recommends individuals remain indoors during smoke events.

In this episode, Professor Gall discusses the importance of understanding the chemistry of wildfire smoke indoors and how smoke is transported into buildings.

Circulation Transfer Between Adjacent Target Bose-Einstein Condensates, Charles B. Henry May 2022

Circulation Transfer Between Adjacent Target Bose-Einstein Condensates, Charles B. Henry

Honors College Theses

We propose an atomtronic rotation sensor design that consists of an array of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) that are confined in a double-target-array potential. The rotation sensor's purpose is to measure the speed of the rotating frame, with respect to the “fixed stars", the sensor rests in. The atomtronic system is an ultracold gas of sodium atoms that have been compressed by laser light into a thin quasi-2D horizontal plane and further confined in the horizontal plane by a double-target-array potential. A target BEC is a combination of disk BEC that is surrounded by a ring BEC. A double-target BEC is …

Covid-19 And The Foreign Exchange Market: An Analysis Of The Pandemic’S Effect On Exchange Rates, Izabella Salim

Honors College Theses

The pandemic created by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) impacted global economies and individual lives. Millions died as a direct result of the virus. Countries found themselves caught up in a whirlwind of information and disinformation that created uncertainty within households, businesses, political factions. This study explores interactions between COVID-19 cases, political responses, and exchange rates. Foreign exchange rates serve as a proxy for global economic response to the growing number of COVID cases and political reactions and responses to the pandemic. Governmental policies can be seen as a signal of a country’s ability to prepare against the virus and protect its …

Reconstructing The Ecological Relationships Of Late Cretaceous Antarctic Dinosaurs And How Functional Tooth Morphology Influenced These Relationships, Ian D. Broxson May 2022

Reconstructing The Ecological Relationships Of Late Cretaceous Antarctic Dinosaurs And How Functional Tooth Morphology Influenced These Relationships, Ian D. Broxson

2022 Symposium

The Sandwich Bluff Formation of the James Ross Basin of Antarctica has recently yielded a group of five late Cretaceous dinosaurs that lived contemporaneously with each other, a first for Antarctica. These five dinosaurs include fragmentary remains of two differently sized elasmarian ornithopods, a possible megaraptor, a hadrosaur, and a nodosaur. In this study we will construct a model of the ecological relationships of late Cretaceous Antarctica. Additionally, we will look at what specific factors allowed this group of four herbivores and a carnivore to coexist in a restricted locality and what niches were filled by each species. Methods to …

The Effects Of Disturbance Intensity On Total Bacteria Concentration In The Water Within Artificial Streams, Seth C. Davis May 2022

The Effects Of Disturbance Intensity On Total Bacteria Concentration In The Water Within Artificial Streams, Seth C. Davis

Honors College Theses

Bacterial communities persist longer in sediment than in the water because sediments offer beneficial conditions for proliferation and formation of self-sustaining colonies. However, environmental- and human-caused sediment disturbance may resuspend bacteria in the water, thus increasing the potential for harmful bacterial to interact with humans and other organisms. I tested the hypothesis that the level of sediment disturbance affects the abundance and duration of bacterial resuspension in artificial stream microcosms. Three treatments were administered: control (no disturbance), low intensity disturbance, and high intensity disturbance (n=5). Water samples were collected before disturbance treatment (P), and at 0, 6, 24, 48, and …

Type Of Synthetic Microfiber Influences Ingestion By Freshwater Worms, Sarah A. Martinez May 2022

Type Of Synthetic Microfiber Influences Ingestion By Freshwater Worms, Sarah A. Martinez

Honors College Theses

Plastics enter the environment from many sources, including clothing made from synthetic textiles, which shed a form of microplastics (microfibers) during their production, use and disposal. The impacts of microfibers on freshwater organisms are relatively unknown, therefore we tested the hypothesis that short- and long-term effects of microfibers on the aquatic worm, Lumbriculus variegatus, depend on the type of synthetic microfiber present. Microcosms containing L. variegatus, sediment and water were exposed to either no fibers (control) or one of three microfiber treatments (nylon, polyester or olefin) at the same concentration for 48 hours or 28 days. At the …

General Variability Leads To Specific Adaptation Toward Energy Optimal Policies, Sabrina J. Abram, Katherine L. Poggensee, Natalia Sánchez, Surabhi N. Simha, James M. Finley, Steven H. Collins, J. Maxwell Donelan

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Our nervous systems can learn optimal control policies in response to changes to our bodies, tasks, and movement contexts. For example, humans can learn to adapt their control policy in walking contexts where the energy-optimal policy is shifted along variables such as step frequency or step width. However, it is unclear how the nervous system determines which ways to adapt its control policy. Here, we asked how human participants explore through variations in their control policy to identify more optimal policies in new contexts. We created new contexts using exoskeletons that apply assistive torques to each ankle at each walking …

A Machine Learning And Deep Learning Framework For Binary, Ternary, And Multiclass Emotion Classification Of Covid-19 Vaccine-Related Tweets, Aditya Dubey May 2022

A Machine Learning And Deep Learning Framework For Binary, Ternary, And Multiclass Emotion Classification Of Covid-19 Vaccine-Related Tweets, Aditya Dubey

Honors Scholar Theses

My research mines public emotion toward the Covid-19 vaccine based on Twitter data collected over the past 6-12 months. This project is centered around building and developing machine learning and deep learning models to perform natural language processing of short-form text, which in our case tweets. These tweets are all vaccine-related tweets and the goal of the classification task is for our models to accurately classify a tweet into one of four emotion groups: Apprehension/Anticipation, Sadness/Anger/Frustration, Joy/Humor/Sarcasm, and Gratitude/Relief. Given this data and the goal of the paper, we aim to answer the following questions: (1) Can a framework be …

Toxicological Assessment Of Zinc Oxide And Titanium Dioxide On Staghorn Coral, Acropora Cervicornis, Katherine E. Meurer May 2022

Toxicological Assessment Of Zinc Oxide And Titanium Dioxide On Staghorn Coral, Acropora Cervicornis, Katherine E. Meurer

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Coral reefs are one of the most diverse and biologically significant ecosystems on the planet. However, anthropogenic impacts have led to a global decline in overall reef health in recent years. To address concerns that organic ultraviolet filters in sunscreen may contribute to reduced coral health, the mineral UV filters, zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2), have become more common in sunscreen formulas as they are often considered “reef safe” despite limited information on the toxicological effects of these compounds in corals. This study evaluated the effects of exposure to unmodified forms of zinc oxide or titanium …
