An Annotated Bibliography Of String Method Books And Theory Books For Pre-College String Students, With A Focus On Music Theory Concepts And Sequence Analysis, Rebecca Zou Hale

Master's Theses

The Hattiesburg Public School District (HPSD) Strings program, one of the largest public school string programs in the state of Mississippi, has been utilizing a method book series titled Essential Elements for Strings (EES) in their curriculum since the early 2000s. After almost two decades of use, the HPSD Strings staff has noticed that a majority of intermediate and advanced strings students struggle with fundamental music theory concepts. The current music theory deficiencies necessitate an improvement in the HPSD Strings curriculum's choice of instructional materials.

Referencing established music curricula and music theory textbooks, the instruction of fundamental music theory concepts …

Impacts Of Artificial Light At Night (Alan) In Marine Ecosystems – A Review, Laura F.B. Marangoni, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth, R Airam, Mark Hamann, Cristian Duarte, Kellie Pendoley, Jørgen Berge, Elena Maggi, Oren Levy

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The globally widespread adoption of Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) began in the mid-20th century. Yet, it is only in the last decade that a renewed research focus has emerged into its impacts on ecological and biological processes in the marine environment that are guided by natural intensities, moon phase, natural light and dark cycles and daily light spectra alterations. The field has diversified rapidly from one restricted to impacts on a handful of vertebrates, to one in which impacts have been quantified across a broad array of marine and coastal habitats and species. Here, we review the current understanding …

Substantial leaps in the understanding of quantum systems have been driven by exploring geometry, topology, dimensionality and interactions in ultracold atomic ensembles1–6. A system where atoms evolve while confined on an ellipsoidal surface represents a heretofore unexplored geometry and topology. Realizing an ultracold bubble—potentially Bose–Einstein condensed—relates to areas of interest including quantized-vortex flow constrained to a closed surface topology, collective modes and self-interference via bubble expansion7–17. Large ultracold bubbles, created by inflating smaller condensates, directly tie into Hubble-analogue expansion physics18–20. Here we report observations from the NASA Cold Atom Lab21 facility onboard the International Space Station of bubbles of ultracold …

A Weakened Recurrent Circuit In The Hippocampus Of Rett Syndrome Mice Disrupts Long-Term Memory Representations, Lingjie He, Matthew S Caudill, Junzhan Jing, Wei Wang, Yaling Sun, Jianrong Tang, Xiaolong Jiang, Huda Y Zoghbi

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Successful recall of a contextual memory requires reactivating ensembles of hippocampal cells that were allocated during memory formation. Altering the ratio of excitation-to-inhibition (E/I) during memory retrieval can bias cell participation in an ensemble and hinder memory recall. In the case of Rett syndrome (RTT), a neurological disorder with severe learning and memory deficits, the E/I balance is altered, but the source of this imbalance is unknown. Using in vivo imaging during an associative memory task, we show that during long-term memory retrieval, RTT CA1 cells poorly distinguish mnemonic context and form larger ensembles than wild-type mouse cells. Simultaneous multiple …

Women aged ≥ 18 years with at least one uUTI treated with antibiotics in the past year were recruited through a patient community panel and physician referrals. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling to include an equal split of …

Policy-Defined Data Access Model For Data Access Limits And Restrictions Enforcement, Eugenio Marchiori, Wei Huang, Nikita Dubrovsky, Sergey Volnov May 2022

Policy-Defined Data Access Model For Data Access Limits And Restrictions Enforcement, Eugenio Marchiori, Wei Huang, Nikita Dubrovsky, Sergey Volnov

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes systems and techniques for providing a policy-defined data access model for enforcing data access limits in place of a permission-protected data access model. An operating system of a computing device may implement the policy-defined data access model to enforce data access limits for applications and processes that decouple permissions from policies. That is, even when an application is permitted by the operating system to access certain data, the operating system may apply and enforce policies that restrict the application’s access to the data in certain ways based on factors such as an application’s purpose for accessing certain …

Techniques are presented herein that support the tokenizing of semantically enriched information sets (such as the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA)) to associate ontological relationships between the various entities and intents in a product information library and rendering them as API responses. The method uses an Inverted Disclosure Plot and a weighted algorithm to determine the order of kinship based on the varied relationships that occur between the extracted entities and various intents. Subsequently, a domain ontology may be generated as a Resource Description Framework (RDF) and, the RDF may be translated into a series of application programming interface (API) …

Old Dilemmas, New Guises: Developing An Anti-Subordination Reading Of Students For Fair Admissions V. Harvard, Eric Szkarlat May 2022

Old Dilemmas, New Guises: Developing An Anti-Subordination Reading Of Students For Fair Admissions V. Harvard, Eric Szkarlat

Fordham Law Review Online

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court will again hear arguments on the constitutionality of race-conscious affirmative action in college admissions. This outcome was far from foretold: the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had suggested the Court might never take up affirmative action in admissions again. Yet after dragging its feet on granting certiorari, the Court agreed to hear Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard. This time, however, the case has a substantially different and quite controversial posture. That posture centers on alleged discrimination against Asian and Pacific American (APA) students applying to college. Some APA students are divided …

The Anomalous Issue Class, Veniamin Privalov May 2022

The Anomalous Issue Class, Veniamin Privalov

Fordham Law Review Online

The modern class action is a litigation superstar. The device’s potential for opening the courthouse doors to “small people,” holding big business accountable, and enacting sweeping reform is second to none. In recent years, however, the star has waned. Judicial hostility has made it harder for plaintiffs to certify a class while making it easier for defendants to avoid class actionsentirely. Certifying a mass tort class has become nearly impossible. Plaintiff lawyers’ creative attempts to work around these roadblocks have been shut down one after another by the Supreme Court. It is in this scorched mass litigation landscape that commentators …

Elevated Substitution Rates Among Wolbachia-Infected Mosquito Species Results In Apparent Phylogenetic Discordance., James E. Russell, Michael Saum, Rebekah Williams May 2022

Elevated Substitution Rates Among Wolbachia-Infected Mosquito Species Results In Apparent Phylogenetic Discordance., James E. Russell, Michael Saum, Rebekah Williams

Georgia Journal of Science

As one of the most widely distributed bacterial cytoplasmic symbionts on earth, Wolbachia pipientis Hertig serves as a model organism for the understanding of host-symbiont interactions. Many mosquito species are infected with Wolbachia strains that induce a form of reproductive manipulation called cytoplasmic incompatibility, in which infected females gain a reproductive advantage over uninfected females in mixed infection populations. The selective advantage of cytoplasmic incompatibility often results in a population sweep of Wolbachia and co-transmitted mitochondrial genomes. Mitochondrial evolution and phylogenetic inferences drawn from mitochondrial gene sequences are thus potentially compromised by reproductive manipulating symbionts, like Wolbachia. Our initial …

How To Regulate Online Platforms: Why Common Carrier Doctrine Is Inappropriate To Regulate Social Networks And Alternate Approaches To Protect Rights, Edward W. Mclaughlin May 2022

How To Regulate Online Platforms: Why Common Carrier Doctrine Is Inappropriate To Regulate Social Networks And Alternate Approaches To Protect Rights, Edward W. Mclaughlin

Fordham Law Review Online

Concerns about the “concentrated control of so much speech in the hands of a few private parties” and their ability to suppress some user speech have led to calls to regulate online platforms like common carriers or public accommodations. Advocates of that regulation theorize that social media platforms host today’s public forum and are open to all comers and so should have a responsibility to be content neutral and allow all voices to be heard. Traditionally, the argument that private players, as opposed to only government actors, can violate individuals’ free speech rights was a progressive cause, but recently conservative …

Court Mandated Technology-Assisted Review In E-Discovery: Changes In Proportionality, Cost-Shifting, And Spoliation, Graham Streich May 2022

Court Mandated Technology-Assisted Review In E-Discovery: Changes In Proportionality, Cost-Shifting, And Spoliation, Graham Streich

Fordham Law Review Online

Burgeoning advanced technology-assisted review (TAR) methods challenge justifications for requesting parties’ burdens and litigant cooperation in e-discovery. Increasingly accurate and accessible TAR introduces novel issues in e-discovery, including determining the proportionality of discovery requests and managing information in spoliation cases. This Essay recommends reconsidering the judiciary’s role in e-discovery in light of new technology and argues that courts, particularly lower courts, need expert technical guidance to adequately address the issues e-discovery presents.

This Article analyzes U.S. ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 169, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention (“Convention 169” or “C. 169”), by evaluating the impact in terms of its ability to solidify its protections of the land and lifeways of Arctic Indigenous people and strengthen the United States’s position as an international leader in Arctic life, development, and policy. Part I presents the issues. Part II introduces the growth of a polar shipping industry in the context of a rapidly melting Arctic. Part III provides a brief gloss on the complex and shifting international legal framework governing Arctic sovereignty …

Recording Virtual Justice: Cameras In The Digital Courtroom, Matthew Bultman May 2022

Recording Virtual Justice: Cameras In The Digital Courtroom, Matthew Bultman

Fordham Law Review Online

With in-person hearings limited during the COVID-19 pandemic, many courts pivoted to proceedings held over the telephone or on virtual platforms like Zoom. It appears these proceedings are here to stay, with various benefits having been realized from remote access to the courts. Remote hearings have, however, given rise to constitutional questions. This Essay focuses on one emerging issue: courts’ ability to prohibit the press and the public from recording or disseminating these proceedings. While the constitutionality of recording and broadcasting restrictions inside the real-world courtroom is established, little consideration was given to the extension of these rules to the …

Tenancies Uncommon: Limits On Representing Cotenants Pro Se, Robert L. Bentlyewski May 2022

Tenancies Uncommon: Limits On Representing Cotenants Pro Se, Robert L. Bentlyewski

Fordham Law Review Online

An adversary proceeding that was part of the Bernie Madoff bankruptcy litigation involved a fraud victim making a motion to represent pro se the interests of all tenants in common who co-owned an account with Madoff. This Essay analyzes and expands upon the bankruptcy court’s holding, which addressed this novel issue by finding that a tenant in common cannot represent his cotenants pro se for two reasons. First, a tenancy in common is not a legal entity that can speak with one voice. Second, one tenant in common cannot represent one or more other cotenants’ interests in litigation without joining …

Exploring Glycolysis-Mediated Metabolic Stress And Mitigation Strategies In The Cns Through Glycation-Lowering Therapy, Cavan Patterson May 2022

Exploring Glycolysis-Mediated Metabolic Stress And Mitigation Strategies In The Cns Through Glycation-Lowering Therapy, Cavan Patterson

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses

In the aging brain, cells undergo stress, inflammation, loss of replicative ability and in some cases cell death. Hyperglycemic conditions have been shown to exacerbate these effects. Recent literature has begun to regard Alzheimer’s Disease as a “Type 3 Diabetes Mellitus,” implicating loss of insulin sensitivity and increased oxidative stress as contributing factors. Hyperglycemic conditions can overwhelm the cellular capacity to detoxify harmful glycolytic byproducts such as methylglyoxal (MGO). Intact MGO reacts readily with nearby proteins or lipids to form Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), of which the accumulation over time has been linked to many age-associated pathologies. Our lab …

Principal Response Curve Analysis Of Arthropod Community Abundance Data With Sparse Subsets, Changjian Jiang, C. R. Brown, P. Asiimwe, Chen Meng, Adam W. Schapaugh

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources

Principal response curve (PRC) analysis was applied to an assessment of the ecological impact of the genetically-modified (GM), insect-resistant, cotton MON 88702 on predatory Hemiptera communities in the field. The field community was represented by ten taxa collected ten times across the season at six sites, in which individual taxa were not observed in at least 25% of the time (unique site x collection combinations). These complete absences and those nearly so, called sparse subsets of the data in this investigation, were the result of geoclimatic and seasonal variations, which are both independent of the treatment effect for which the …
