Conference Rubric Development For Stem Librarians’ Publications, Sarah Over, James Mcallister, Debbie Morrow, Sylvia Jones, David Pixton, Eric Prosser, Aditi Gupta, Amani Magid

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Librarians within the Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) annually publish conference papers for the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The existing ASEE rubric was not sufficient for our members, so we developed a new rubric as a charged committee for this task. We briefly discuss the sparse literature in this area, focusing on the use of rubrics and the rationale behind them. Due to this lack of literature, our committee primarily utilized additional sources such as rubrics found from other professional organizations in STEM and library fields. Our rubric is designed to encourage substantive feedback and growth of authors during …

The Impacts Of Ph On Biodiversity In Marine Environments, Matthew Rock May 2022

The Impacts Of Ph On Biodiversity In Marine Environments, Matthew Rock

Biology Student Scholarship

Climate change continues to impact each and every environment on Earth due to rising levels of greenhouse gasses. CO2 is the most pervasive of these gasses, and when mixed with seawater it creates carbonic acid increasing the pH of water. Ocean acidification has led to large-scale die-offs of more sensitive marine species like coral; therefore, this project serves to evaluate the interaction between pH and the biodiversity of coastal marine environments. Bird Nesting Trends In Massachusetts, Dieter Rodriguez May 2022

Bird Nesting Trends In Massachusetts, Dieter Rodriguez

Biology Student Scholarship

Bird nesting data has long been documented for various species across the United States. While trends between temperature changes or precipitation on bird nesting have been studied for particular species, studies done on the effects of temperature due to climate change on bird nesting on the broader state level are lacking. Using bird nesting data and average annual temperature data for Massachusetts collected over a ten year period, I assessed the effects of temperature changes over time on bird nesting attempts and total eggs laid for all documented species within the state. Climate Effects On Butterfly Species Richness, Isabelle Heron May 2022

Climate Effects On Butterfly Species Richness, Isabelle Heron

Biology Student Scholarship

The effects of climate change on the surrounding biodiversity lead scientists to argue an “insect apocalypse” is approaching. Butterflies, as poikilothermic animals, meaning their activity is closely controlled by weather, represent a useful indicator to studying climate change. Scientists can detect changes in butterfly abundance which result in changes in distribution and abundance over a short period of time. BIO 340 final project

The Effect Of Temperature On Algal Blooms In New York State, Kylie Taylor May 2022

The Effect Of Temperature On Algal Blooms In New York State, Kylie Taylor

Biology Student Scholarship

Water shapes all flora and fauna. Urbanization, industrialization, and other human activities have negatively affected this important source. For example, algal blooms arise due to a combination of sunlight, warm temperatures, and excessive nutrient runoff. The nutrients are a result of fertilizer runoff which enters aquatic systems and cause algal blooms. Increased air temperatures cause increased water temperatures which creates ideal conditions for cyanobacteria growth which are responsible for blooms. Algal blooms affect the entire ecosystem by decreasing sunlight availability in the water. Decreased sunlight contributes to low oxygen dead-zones which negatively affect drinking water reservoirs. I examined the relationship …

Prevalence Of Postpartum Depression In Occupied Palestine, Amneh Amro

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In a world where everything has been modernized and progressively accepted, has modern medicine kept up? With a growing population, is the accessibility to healthcare service meeting the demand and without bias? More importantly, has the growing population broken down the stigmas associated with medical conditions, like postpartum depression? There has been a notable disparity in mental health treatment worldwide, and even more so in Palestine and other third world countries of similar nature.

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

A collaborative partnership launched the Great Grocer Project (GGP) in March 2021 in Detroit, Michigan where health inequities, including deaths due to COVID-19, have historically been politically determined and informed by socially entrenched norms. Institutional and structural racism has contributed to a lack of diversity in store ownership among Detroit grocers and limited access to high-quality, affordable healthy foods as well as disparate food insecurity among Detroit residents. The GGP seeks to promote Detroit’s healthy grocers to improve community health and economic vitality through research, programs, and policies that have the potential to advance health equity. A cross-sectional design was …

Missing Value Estimation Using Clustering And Deep Learning Within Multiple Imputation Framework, Manar D. Samad, Sakib Abrar, Norou Diawara

Computer Science Faculty Research

Missing values in tabular data restrict the use and performance of machine learning, requiring the imputation of missing values. Arguably the most popular imputation algorithm is multiple imputation by chained equations (MICE), which estimates missing values from linear conditioning on observed values. This paper proposes methods to improve both the imputation accuracy of MICE and the classification accuracy of imputed data by replacing MICE’s linear regressors with ensemble learning and deep neural networks (DNN). The imputation accuracy is further improved by characterizing individual samples with cluster labels (CISCL) obtained from the training data. Our extensive analyses of six tabular data …

Articles & Book Chapters

Assumptions of trust in water systems are widespread in higher-income countries, often linked to expectations of “modern water.” The current literature on water and trust also tends to reinforce a technoscientific approach, emphasizing the importance of aligning water user perceptions with expert assessments. Although such approaches can be useful to document instances of distrust, they often fail to explain why patterns differ over time, and across contexts and populations. Addressing these shortcomings, we offer a relational approach focused on the trustworthiness of hydro-social systems to contextualize water-trust dynamics in relation to broader practices and contexts. In doing so, we investigate …

A Review Of Current Construction Guidelines To Inform The Design Of Rammed Earth Houses In Seismically Active Zones, David Thompson, Charles Augarde, Juan Pablo Osorio May 2022

A Review Of Current Construction Guidelines To Inform The Design Of Rammed Earth Houses In Seismically Active Zones, David Thompson, Charles Augarde, Juan Pablo Osorio

Articles

Sustainability in the materials we use for construction is a prime concern, focusing on reducing the embodied energy and carbon footprints of the materials used. The cement used in concrete products is responsible for a significant proportion of Man's CO2 emissions and its production requires substantial energy input, as do fired clay products. For this reason, products formed from unfired earthen materials are of increasing interest and the current challenges include devising means of robust design for strength and to address durability concerns. One form of earthen construction that employs an in-situ method is rammed earth, and it is a …

The Effects Of The “Chinese Virus” On The Asian American And Pacific Islander Community: Hate Crimes, Discrimination, And Violence, Emily Chang

Undergraduate Honors Theses

With the spread of the global health crisis that is COVID-19, hate crimes towards Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) have skyrocketed in the U.S., largely due to the charged rhetoric and misperceptions perpetrated by the U.S. government that link COVID-19 to people of Asian descent. This project analyzes the history of discrimination towards AAPIs in the United States and its present-day context. Moreover, this analysis reveals the detrimental effects of verbal and physical assaults on the emotional and physical health of AAPIs and explores the possible solutions we can implement to decrease these crimes. Finally, I consider the implications …
