Final Report - Climbing Robots With Automated Deployments Of Sensors And Nde Devices For Steel Bridge Inspection, Hung La, Son Nguyen

Project AS-2

Automated solutions for infrastructure inspection are desirable. However, arduous engineering is delaying our progress. A complete system needs to deal with three main problems: (1) locomotive performance for high complexity of steel bridges including differential curvatures, transitions between beams and obstacles; (2) data collection capability, inclusive of visible and invisible damages, in-depth information such as vibration, coat, and material thickness, etc.; and (3) working condition made up of gust wind. To have such a complete system, this technical report presents novel developments in inspection-climbing robots. Four different robot versions are designed to look for the simplest and most effective configuration …

Understanding And Preventing Suicide Terrorism, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

The January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, driven by President Donald Trump’s supporters, highlighted severe vulnerabilities in democratic institutions and terrorism prevention. Ashli E. Babbitt, a rioter with military experience, became a martyr for far-right groups despite her personal struggles. The riot underscores the growing threat of domestic terrorism, with potential future attacks requiring robust prevention strategies. While social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook attempted to curb extremist rhetoric, broader measures are needed to address “lone wolf” terrorists. Current and past cases, from the Oklahoma City bombing to failed plots like the Michigan governor kidnapping, reveal the complexity of preventing …

School of Health and Exercise Sciences Faculty Publications

Purpose Basicervical femoral neck fractures are uncommon injuries that occur at the extracapsular base of the femoral neck at its transition with the intertrochanteric line. Controversy remains in the orthopedic literature as to the optimal method of treatment for this fracture type given the inherent instability and greater rate of implant failure with traditional fixation constructs. The purpose of this study is to quantify the incidence and preferred treatment methods of basicervical hip fractures at a single, regional, Level 1 trauma center and to identify differences in postoperative complications between treatment options. Methods The present study is a retrospective case …

Reconciling Relationships With The Land Through Land Acknowledgements, Deborah Mcgregor, Emma Nelson May 2022

Reconciling Relationships With The Land Through Land Acknowledgements, Deborah Mcgregor, Emma Nelson

Articles & Book Chapters

One of the limitations of conventional Canadian conceptions of reconciliation is the underlying assumption that reconciliation applies, virtually exclusively, to relationships among peoples. There are, however, other dimensions to reconciliation that are equally important from an Indigenous point of view. As Mi’kmaq Elder Augustine suggests, “other dimensions of human experience—our relationships with the earth and all living beings—are also relevant in working towards reconciliation” (TRC 2015a, 122). Indigenous conceptions of reconciliation extend beyond people to the natural world and are informed by direct relationships to the Land. In this chapter. an Anishinaabe scholar, living in her own Lands, and a …

Capturing Multiple Full-Scene Images With A Single Camera Via Aperture Stop Exploitation, Aaron J. Pung

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

In an effort to increase the capability of modern camera systems, recent advances in imaging technology have seen the maturation of post-processing algorithms, multi-spectral imagers, and scene-splitting techniques. Although highly enabling, each of these methods faces an inherent limitation imposed by the geometry of the camera. By re-evaluating the fundamental components of the camera, this study presents a new method and paradigm in capturing and processing scene information

Sdny Reaffirms Strong Deference Owed To Arbitrators, Ryan Katz

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog

On November 16, 2021, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York affirmed an arbitration tribunal’s decision that International Engineering and Construction (“IEC”) pay over $8 million plus interest to GE Oil and Gas, as a result of their dispute with Baker Hughes (formerly GE Oil and Gas) over construction delays while building a gas plant in Nigeria. Notably, the court stated that IEC’s arguments “might have traction” if the court were the first to hear the dispute, but given the strong deference owed to arbitrators, IEC’s arguments were insufficient to overturn the order.

Examining Revolution Through Breakfast Politics, Zachary Axel Clausen

Master's Theses

Analyzing the Black Panther Party and its activities, this study develops a framework for evaluating revolution through a process-oriented examination of discourse and practices surrounding the Free Breakfast Program’s emergence and operation from around 1968 to 1975. The program began in Oakland and quickly spread to over 36 cities in less than two years. Using a swath of interviews, radio shows, movies, newspapers, magazines, documents, pictures and other forms of media from the time period, I analyze the Breakfast Program to explicate the political terrain of food provision, the unique community-based approach to non-hierarchical resource distribution, and the production of …

Sexual And Reproductive Health Care For Undocumented Californians: Universal Health Care & Reproductive Justice, Josephine Emily Roberts May 2022

Sexual And Reproductive Health Care For Undocumented Californians: Universal Health Care & Reproductive Justice, Josephine Emily Roberts

Master's Theses

Universal Health Care can hardly be achieved if the Sexual Reproductive Health needs of a population are not met. In other words, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Universal Health Care are mutually reinforcing, and the state of California should consider this when implementing Medi-Cal health care for all Undocumented Californians. In 2016, California implemented an extension of Medi-Cal treatment to undocumented children up to 26 years of age. Comparable to the United States Federal Medicaid program aimed to help cut health care costs for low-income and vulnerable populations, Medi-Cal offers some coverage for emergency medical services to undocumented individuals of …
