Prioritizing Wellness: My Personal Wellness Plan, Sandy Hobart May 2022

Prioritizing Wellness: My Personal Wellness Plan, Sandy Hobart

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

In order to function well the next day, it is very important to prioritize getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night. This is sometimes easier said then done especially with a child, but I have found maintaining a routine helps. My son and I have a bedtime routine starting at 9 PM which consists of story time and breakfast ideas for the next day.

The Art Of Adhd, Asma Saleh May 2022

The Art Of Adhd, Asma Saleh

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

In the piece, there are multiple events happening at the same time, and one of the key factors I wanted to highlight in the painting was the constant movement and change that occurred in the mind of one who has ADHD. On the right side of the painting, creativity is expressed through the abstract mediums and inconsistent flows and presses of the brush used. On the left side, however, the art is much neater and has clear imaging rather than having an abstract approach. This represents the right and left hemisphere of the human brain with its creative and logical …

Fluoroquinolone Toxicity: From Mysterious Internet Illness To My New Reality - A Memoir Of My Bout With Levofloxacin, Michael Paul Lewis May 2022

Fluoroquinolone Toxicity: From Mysterious Internet Illness To My New Reality - A Memoir Of My Bout With Levofloxacin, Michael Paul Lewis

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

This short story is a memoir divulging my experience in 2017 with an antibiotic known as levofloxacin and a syndrome called fluoroquinolone toxicity. With this autobiographical account, I hope to educate readers about the toxicity of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, so they can make more informed decisions regarding their health and the health of others and, ultimately, effect positive change in the medical field, either as a student, patient, or provider as far as fluoroquinolone administration, pharmacovigilance, and “floxie” patient advocacy is concerned.

Our Red Sun, Isabella Moreno May 2022

Our Red Sun, Isabella Moreno

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

Just like the Sun, we change. We change every day, every month, every year. This picture was taken at the very beginning of the Fall ’21 semester, and it is by far one of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken. In my twenty-two years of living, I have never seen a red Sun until that moment, and I’m still waiting to see another one. Usually during sunset, the sky looks different. The clouds and the sky look colorful with swatches of pink, orange, and red. It’s amazing, and it’s all because of the Sun.  If we think about it, we …

Dimming Of The Shining City, Jason V. Terk

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

Our nation has been reduced from the ideals of its founding by forces inherent in our contemporary culture. What results is a nation that has failed the test of the pandemic as evidenced by preventable excess morbidity and mortality...and the loss of my patient's father.

Insecurity, Audrey Williams May 2022

Insecurity, Audrey Williams

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

I want my work to serve as portals to another world where stigmatization of mental illness and gender identity are not a reality. I contradict stereotypes of femininity, mental health, and self-perception. While some may consider the self-portrait the ultimate act of narcissism, I revel in it. I invoke imagery from Baroque portraiture, an era categorized by luxury and indulgence. I insert myself and my loved ones into these opulent scenes, but with an unmistakable modern streak. In my portraits, I emphasize features society deems less than perfect. Pores, cuts, and bruises compose the space in a decorative way that …

Prayer Rug, Joshua Cupps

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

"Prayer Rug" is a piece dedicated to my prayer rug, which was given to me as a gift from a close friend on his return from his home country, Jordan. I wrote this piece at the beginning of Ramadan, a muslim holy month of fasting, prayer, introspection, and community. The prayer rug has become an important place for me as I have come to know and love Islam. It is a place of peace and reverence, one that I can take with me to disconnect from the stress of everyday life and connect with God. It is also a place …

Development Of The Patient Propensity Indicator: Measuring And Predicting Antecedents Of Insights Into The Individual Management Of Healthcare, Julie Monroid May 2022

Development Of The Patient Propensity Indicator: Measuring And Predicting Antecedents Of Insights Into The Individual Management Of Healthcare, Julie Monroid

Student Theses and Dissertations

This research describes the development of the Patient Propensity Indicator (PPI), a reliable and valid measure, which is grounded in the rigorous conceptualization and operationalization of psychometric (ability, attitude, belief), health literacy, and learning preferences constructs and their effect on medication adherence. Adopting a well-established protocol for instrument development (DeVillis, 2017) the PPI’s multi-construct items were developed based on the findings from an extensive literature review both within and outside of healthcare.

An expert assessment of 130 items was conducted by a distinguished judging panel who provided validation of the constructs and item reduction (87). Refined constructs and items were …

Dancing With The Devil: Carnival And The True Witch Of The Witch Of Edmonton, James B. Barone May 2022

Dancing With The Devil: Carnival And The True Witch Of The Witch Of Edmonton, James B. Barone

Student Theses

The most obvious carnivalesque aspects in Dekker, Ford and Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton—the Morris dancers and their leader Cuddy Banks, and the shapeshifting demon Dog—have received the bulk of scholarly attention. However, very little has been written about the cagey, pregnant servant girl Winifred, who as I argue in this thesis more fully embodies Carnival’s aspects of rebirth and renewal. Winifred endures the play’s turmoil by inventing and reinventing herself. Her powers of creation are antithetical to the downfalls of the play’s two main characters—Frank Thorney and Elizabeth Sawyer, the play’s eponymous witch—as well as the mischief created by …

Transformative Ecoliteracy Development In Postsecondary Education: Cultivating Intentional Relationships Through Garden-Based Learning, Shevawn Armstrong May 2022

Transformative Ecoliteracy Development In Postsecondary Education: Cultivating Intentional Relationships Through Garden-Based Learning, Shevawn Armstrong

Dissertations and Theses

Education can play a critical role in empowering learners to address the global, complex, and interconnected sustainability problems humanity currently faces. Ecoliteracy, as an educational aim, may support the cultivation of values, attitudes, and skills required for the development of sustainability solutions and our collective ability to design regenerative ways of living. However, empirical research that explores and supports the development of ecoliteracy in adults is limited. This grounded theory action research study aimed to contribute to this body of knowledge. This study explored how adult ecoliteracy and practical gardening skills may be cultivated through an intentionally designed, holistic, garden-based …

Amplifying Arab American Heritage Language Students' Voices: A Multiple Case Study On Translanguaging Practices And Identity Negotiation In University Arabic Classrooms, Lina Gomaa May 2022

Amplifying Arab American Heritage Language Students' Voices: A Multiple Case Study On Translanguaging Practices And Identity Negotiation In University Arabic Classrooms, Lina Gomaa

Dissertations and Theses

Little research has been conducted on Arab American students at universities and specifically, in the heritage language studies field. The experiences of Arab American heritage language (AAHL) students are significantly less examined than those of other heritage language students. Arabic language curricula and instructional practices in universities tend to privilege the teaching of Modern Standard Arabic over dialects, which marginalizes heritage learners' prior knowledge of the Arabic culture and its language, specifically Arabic dialects used in their home communities. These phenomena can create a non-affirming learning experience for these students. As such, in this study, I addressed these questions:

  • To …

Health Promotion By Using Collaborative Educational Games For The Women Of Angeline’S, Sinclair Ralston, Carmen Connolly, Alexsis Azcueta, Theresa Domingo, Natalie Gray, Ashley Reola

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Introduction

Founded in 1894, the Seattle Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) was developed to support and empower women of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Since then, the Seattle YWCA has grown and focused its efforts on addressing racial and socioeconomic disparities, especially inequities found within the female homeless population (Andrews, 2004). Angeline’s Day Center is a program offered by YWCA and is located in downtown Seattle. It serves approximately 200 women a day by providing overnight shelter, breakfast and lunch services, healthcare access, and amenities like showers, bathrooms, and laundry (“Angeline’s Day Center”, 2022). After completing a windshield survey and …

The Convergence Of Grace And Nature: Flannery O'Connor's Catholic Imagination, Katerina Jakub May 2022

The Convergence Of Grace And Nature: Flannery O'Connor's Catholic Imagination, Katerina Jakub

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This thesis explores Flannery O’Connor’s Catholic imagination throughout her fiction, incorporating close readings of O’Connor’s short stories with her letters, essays, and prayer journal. The thesis also draws comparisons between O’Connor’s work and that of Graham Greene and Elizabeth Bishop to explore O’Connor’s unique perspective and style. O’Connor’s fiction flows from her Thomistic theology concerning the relationship between grace and nature, which she emphasizes throughout her writing. The first chapter presents a close reading of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair paired with O’Connor’s “Greenleaf” and Benedict XVI’s Deus Caristas Est to argue that eros is fundamentally Christian. Greene …
