Asian Americans’ Intention To Seek Help: The Moderating Influence Of Ethnic Identity On The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Melissa-Ann Lagunas, Emi Ichimura May 2022

Asian Americans’ Intention To Seek Help: The Moderating Influence Of Ethnic Identity On The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Melissa-Ann Lagunas, Emi Ichimura

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Asian Americans (AAs) report low utilization of psychological services, despite heightened needs. We analyze the three variables of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB): help-seeking attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control, and hypothesized that each variable would predict AAs intention to seek help and that subethnic heritage would serve as a moderator. Based on a sample of 246 AAs, each TPB variable accounted for 41.6% of the variance in intention to seek help. A one-way MANOVA showed that East Asians report less favorable help seeking attitudes than Southeast and multiethnic Asians. Our findings illustrate a need for the development …

Measuring Body Image During Pregnancy’S Impact On The Level Of Postpartum Depression, Grace Underwood May 2022

Measuring Body Image During Pregnancy’S Impact On The Level Of Postpartum Depression, Grace Underwood

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

It is well known that women experience many changes within their bodies during the perinatal period, and that postpartum depression is the most common mental illness following childbirth due to the many chemical, behavioral, and psychological changes that occur in women’s bodies. “Literature reporting body image disturbances across the perinatal period has produced inconsistent findings, owing to the complexity of body image experiences during pregnancy and the first year postpartum” (2015, Watson et al.). Body image issues during the perinatal period are common, although “more research based on measures suitable to cover the special features of body image during pregnancy …

Post-Psychiatric Hospitalization Suicide Interventions For Veterans And Active Duty Service Members: A Systematic Literature Review, Katherine O'Connell, Nicole Moreira May 2022

Post-Psychiatric Hospitalization Suicide Interventions For Veterans And Active Duty Service Members: A Systematic Literature Review, Katherine O'Connell, Nicole Moreira

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Veterans discharged from a psychiatric hospitalization are 12 times more likely to die by suicide particularly within three months post-discharge. Our systematic literature review aims to synthesize research on intervention efficacy for reducing suicide risk in veterans and service members following a hospitalization. A search was conducted using PsychINFO, PubMed, MedLine, and Cochran Collection using “suicide” AND (“veteran” OR “military”) AND (“inpatient” OR “psychiatric hospitalization”) AND (“discharge” OR “release”). CBT and Motivational Interviewing were most effective at decreasing risk. Caring Contacts delivered with personalized contact were more effective than email or text. Outpatient sessions post-discharge decreased ideation and rehospitalization likelihood.

Mindfulness And Emotionally Focused Therapy (Eft) Integration To Increase Secure Attachment, Joanna Broussard, Jenee O'Brien May 2022

Mindfulness And Emotionally Focused Therapy (Eft) Integration To Increase Secure Attachment, Joanna Broussard, Jenee O'Brien

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Using data from 10 couples recruited from the local mental health care community we will examine the relationship between mindfulness and emotional regulation in the treatment of couples. The addition of mindfulness will create a greater change effect compared to EFT treatment as usual. Effects will be measured in a pre/post design utilizing three standardized tests, including an ANOVA test for analysis. We hypothesize that utilization of mindfulness techniques with EFT will result in increased rate of therapeutic progress as compared to a control group.

Adolescent Autonomy In Anxiety Disorder Treatment: An Exploratory Study Of Individual Therapy Versus Relational Therapy, Aria Hudson, Sarah Barak May 2022

Adolescent Autonomy In Anxiety Disorder Treatment: An Exploratory Study Of Individual Therapy Versus Relational Therapy, Aria Hudson, Sarah Barak

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Adolescents, who guard their autonomy fiercely, frequently are reluctant to fully engage in family therapy. This also is true for adolescents being treated for anxiety disorders, which is the most common mental health condition in this age group, with a prevalence of 6.5%. Because anxiety disorders present young and frequently persist into adulthood, early treatment is imperative. While caregiver involvement is often an aid in therapeutic treatment, this study aims to investigate whether relational or individual therapy is more effective for adolescents being treated for anxiety disorders. The study hypothesizes that adolescents will have better outcomes in individual therapy.

Is Narrative Family Therapy Efficacious In Treating Geriatric Depression?, Linsey Hunt May 2022

Is Narrative Family Therapy Efficacious In Treating Geriatric Depression?, Linsey Hunt

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Despite the prevalence of geriatric depression, mental health in this population is not well understood (Zenebe et al., 2021). Similarly, narrative family therapy is understudied (Suddeath et al., 2017, Lloyd-Williams et al., 2018). Narrative family therapy is well-suited for treating older adults because it facilitates social connections and assists with meaning-making (Biassoni et al., 2019; Chow & Fok, 2020; Gardner & Poole, 2009). This study aims to determine the efficacy of narrative family therapy in treating geriatric depression compared to individual narrative therapy. Mixed methods using pre- and post-intervention depression scale results and coding of open-ended questions would be utilized. …

Telehealth And Secondary Trauma: A Study Proposal For The Exploration Of The Compounded Impacts Of Secondary Trauma Via Telehealth On Therapists, Grace Hamlow, Erica Encarnacion May 2022

Telehealth And Secondary Trauma: A Study Proposal For The Exploration Of The Compounded Impacts Of Secondary Trauma Via Telehealth On Therapists, Grace Hamlow, Erica Encarnacion

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a steep increase in conducting therapy via telehealth. Past studies have examined the impacts of secondary trauma on therapists conducting sessions in person. The current study proposal aims to assess symptoms of vicarious trauma, measured by the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), when conducting therapy via telehealth compared to in-person therapy. As the frequency of telehealth counseling increases, so do the compounded impacts of secondary trauma on therapists during a pandemic and the need for further preventative care for therapists as they continue to provide care and services to the public.

From In Person To Virtual: Change In Service And Its Effect On Children’S Behavior During Covid-19 Pandemic, Taniyah Roach, Jasmin Barrett

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Families with children who have developmental disabilities often use behavioral services to address child externalizing behaviors. It is now well established from a variety of studies that COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted families and children with developmental disabilities. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic preventing or altering access to behavioral services, this study employed survey methodology to examine whether change in access to services moderated the relations between multiple risk factors and child externalizing behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the purpose of this study, risk factors consisted of race, parent income, and parental education. Participants included individuals with developmental …

Road To Recovery With Fido: Are Pet-Human Bonds Predictors Of Healthy Romantic Relationships After The Covid-19 Pandemic?, Jackie Licea

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

There is a growing increase in the downfall and degradation of romantic and sexual relationships, due to the multi-layered stressors and aftermath of the pandemic (Montanaro et. al, 2022) (Luetke et. al, 2020). The sudden rise of pet adoptions during the global pandemic also sparked a researching curiosity, with the opportunity to test and obtain any critical information for developing loving bonds and relationships with others. This proposal seeks to find data and information relevant to adult attachment with the inclusion of animal bonding. This includes exploration of resilience from feelings of loneliness or conflicted in a relationship. Proposed results …

Electronic Visual Surveillance And The Reasonable Expectation Of Privacy, Max Guirguis

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

The purpose of this Article is twofold. First, it seeks to examine the issue of electronic visual surveillance from a legal perspective. Second, and attendant to this, it seeks to establish clear standards to regulate this new technology and limit its intrusiveness. Toward this end, I will begin by briefly discussing the uses, potential benefits, and civil concerns of continuous video surveillance of public places by government-installed cameras, and proceed to investigate the various constitutional issues surrounding this technology. As I go along, I will propose guidelines to keep the practice constitutional and minimally intrusive. Finally, and by way of …

This Article suggests that broader judicial recognition of traditional property rights for web sites would allow site owners to rely on historical standards to protect their data and give them the control over their web-based assets that is needed to facilitate a variety of business models and to continue to fuel the Internet’s growth. Part II of this Article describes the trespass to chattels doctrine, as per the Restatement, and how it has begun to find its place in Internet law. Part III critiques the main issues raised in applying the trespass to chattels doctrine to unwanted electronic intrusions in …

Polishing The "Gold Standard" On The E-Discovery Cost-Shifting Analysis: Zubulake V. Ubs Warburg, Llc, James M. Evangelista

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

The purpose of this Article is to discuss the recent series of decisions in Zubulake v. UBS Warburg, LLC (Zubulake I), that modified the eight-factor analysis established in Rowe Entertainment, Inc. v. William Morris Agency, to assist in determining who pays for the costs associated with producing electronic data. While the Rowe test has been described as the “gold standard for courts resolving electronic discovery disputes,” in the future, the Zubulake decisions will become the seminal reference on this issue.

Skin Response: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Pressure Injury Prevention, Shannon E. Jagger Msn, Rn-Bc, Ne-Bc, Cpps, Deborah A. Saber Ph.D.. Rn, Ccrn-K, Patricia Poirier Ph.D., Rn

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are listed as serious reportable events and classified as “never events.” Nevertheless, more than 2.5 million people develop HAPIs in the United States every year with 60,000 dying from associated complications. HAPI rates at the site of this quality improvement initiative were high and required intervention. As a result, the Skin Response (SR) initiative was developed to bring a multidisciplinary team to the bedside within 20 minutes of an identified skin concern. This team consisted of the bedside registered nurse (RN), RN leader, physician, facilitator, nutritionist, and wound RN. Through a team approach, SR assisted …

Latest Issue Of The Farms Review

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The latest issue of the FARMS Review (vol. 21, no. 2) opens with an editor’s introduction by Lou Midgley that probes a dilemma facing evangelicals: much of their belief system is traceable to Augustine’s efforts to infuse Christianity with concepts drawn from classical (pagan) philosophy. Midgley discusses how this alien admixture does not square with the evangelical belief in biblical sufficiency, or “Bible alone.” He also calls attention to how the noted evangelical scholar N. T. Wright has recently put evangelicals on the defensive by challenging the entrenched but (in Wright’s view) misguided notion of “justification by faith alone.”
