The Power Of Proactive Referrals: An Evidence-Based Practice Project To Improve Smoking Cessation Rates At A Community Health Clinic, Kristin Mcmahon
The Power Of Proactive Referrals: An Evidence-Based Practice Project To Improve Smoking Cessation Rates At A Community Health Clinic, Kristin Mcmahon
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States today. Twenty percent of adults in the United States use tobacco costing the healthcare system approximately $225 billion annually in disease treatment. Most smokers want to stop smoking and most visit a healthcare provider each year making access to cessation interventions feasible. The purpose of this evidence-based practice Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to increase smoking cessation among patients at a community health clinic by proactively linking patients to cessation counseling and support through implementation of the Ask-Advise-Connect model of smoking cessation. During …

Accurate estimates of reproductive parameters important in understanding life history evolution and conservation of small fishes are dependent upon careful assignment of ovarian phases. Proper assignment is based upon the stages of propagule (oocyte) development, oocyte maturation and the location of any clutch or portion thereof within the ovaries. Macroscopic inspection and assignment of ovarian developmental phases have often been used for small freshwater fishes. By contrast, histological methods for assignment of reproductive phases have been developed and are widely used for marine fishes, but they have rarely been used for small freshwater fishes. We review oocyte development, ovum maturation, …

Greenland's glacial fjords are a key bottleneck in the earth system, regulating exchange of heat, freshwater and nutrients between the ice sheet and ocean and hosting societally important fisheries. We combine recent bathymetric, atmospheric, and oceanographic data with a buoyant plume model to show that summer subglacial discharge from 136 tidewater glaciers, amounting to 0.02 Sv of freshwater, drives 0.6–1.6 Sv of upwelling. Bathymetric analysis suggests that this is sufficient to renew most major fjords within a single summer, and that these fjords provide a path to the continental shelf that is deeper than 200 m for two-thirds of the …

It is preferred to simultaneously recover resource and energy from waster. Sulfur dioxide, SO2, a common air pollutant, a potential energy resource, is a key link to sulfur nature circulation. SO2 can be conversed to NH4HSO3 and (NH4)2SO3 during the ammonia desulfurization process, which can be used to produce (NH4)2SO4 fertilizer. For high quality (NH4)2SO4 fertilizer and high heat transfer efficiency of the evaporative crystallization, HSO3- or SO32- needs to be oxidized to form SO …
Beyond Inhibition: A Novel Strategy Of Targeting Hiv-1 Protease To Eliminate Viral Reservoirs, Josh G Kim, Liang Shan
Beyond Inhibition: A Novel Strategy Of Targeting Hiv-1 Protease To Eliminate Viral Reservoirs, Josh G Kim, Liang Shan
2020-Current year OA Pubs
HIV-1 protease (PR) is a viral enzyme that cleaves the Gag and Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors to convert them into their functional forms, a process which is essential to generate infectious viral particles. Due to its broad substrate specificity, HIV-1 PR can also cleave certain host cell proteins. Several studies have identified host cell substrates of HIV-1 PR and described the potential impact of their cleavage on HIV-1-infected cells. Of particular interest is the interaction between PR and the caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 8 (CARD8) inflammasome. A recent study demonstrated that CARD8 can sense HIV-1 PR activity and induce cell death. …

Doctoral Theses
This thesis analyzes three problems where a monopolistic seller is selling to an agent with multidimensional private information. While our understanding of such problems is comprehensive if the agent's private information is one-dimensional, problems with multidimensional private information are known to be ubiquitous but analytically notorious. The three chapters in this thesis make progress in understanding optimal mechanism design in such multidimensional screening problems. In the first problem, the seller is selling an object to an agent who exhibits behavioral preferences, in a departure from the standard rational models. Behavioral preferences arise because the agent is budget constrained and needs …

While global efforts to close gender gaps have taken great strides in the past years, broad cultural views and social institutions still exist to place women at a subordinate level to men. It is a common scenario to trivialize a woman’s achievements or power in instances when she does not conform to gender norms taken as “a given” in a cultural context. A few elementary examples of such social inequality could include unequal pay at the workplace or menstruation in cultures where it is considered a defilement of a woman’s body instead of a female bodily process. In most of …

An important component of assessing the hazards of anticoagulant rodenticides to non-target wildlife is observations in exposed free-ranging individuals. The objective of this study was to determine whether environmentally realistic, sublethal first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide (FGAR) exposures via prey can result in direct or indirect adverse effects to free-flying raptors. We offered black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) that had fed on Rozol® Prairie Dog Bait (Rozol, 0.005% active ingredient chlorophacinone, CPN) to six wild-caught red-tailed hawks (RTHA, Buteo jamaicensis), and also offered black-tailed prairie dogs that were not exposed to Rozol to another two wild-caught RTHAs for 7 …

We consider condensation measures of the form P:=13P∘S−11+13P∘S−12+13ν associated with the system (S,(13,13,13),ν), where S={Si}2i=1 are contractions and ν is a Borel probability measure on R with compact support. Let D(μ) denote the quantization dimension of a measure μ if it exists. In this paper, we study self-similar measures ν satisfying D(ν)>κ, D(ν)κ, the D(P)-dimensional lower and upper quantization coefficients are finite, positive and unequal; and for D(ν)≤κ, the D(P)-dimensional lower quantization coefficient is infinity.

Kurt Goldstein imagined that at every stage of their development, organisms are, to characterize, wrestling with the imminent and inescapable realities (bio-socio-psychological) of energy (e.g., food and sleep), safety (e.g., hygiene; home and a family), and possibility (e.g., learning; opportunities and luck), and importantly, simultaneously. To oversimplify, Maslow would like us to eat before loving or praying, whereas Goldstein intuits that human motivations are dynamically complex and multifactorial -- in others words, integrally transactional and ongoing. It is Goldstein’s more complex idea that this essay supports.

Ontological Awareness In Food Systems Education, Colin C. Dring
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
We review efforts in Sustainable Food Systems Education and Critical Food Systems Education literature to employ education in ways that seek social and environmental transformation of food systems. Here, we argue that forms of food systems education that are disconnected from awareness of their ontological roots are destined to reproduce the same food systems with the same consequences for life on Earth. This theoretical paper invites discussions that unpack “habits of being” underpinning modern/colonial conceptualizations of food system issues, transformation efforts, and pedagogies. We note the risk of reinscribing, within food systems education, specific onto-epistemological norms and values that are …

Why We Experience Musical Emotions: William Gardiner’S “The Music Of Nature” Revisited, Daniela L. Boero Dr.
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
This paper focuses and expands on the ideas of William Gardiner, an amateur musician who was the first to propose that human emotions experienced in music listening might be inspired by “the sounds of nature.” His book has been ignored for almost two centuries. We revisit his hypothesis from an evolutionary psychology approach. This contribution reviews environmental psychology and musical studies which focus on emotional reactions to basic musical cues such as pitch, timbre, and loudness, and also, on animal communication studies. Reported literature confirms the hypothesis that our ancestral soundscape might have shaped, at least in part, the basic …

The silicon-based anode materials have the potential to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy density in lithium-ion batteries market owing to their high theoretical specific capacity. Unfortunately, their commercialization was hindered by the continuous volume expansion. Herein, the expansion characteristics and corresponding mechanism of the silicon oxide and graphite-silicon oxide composites were investigated by in-situ displacement detection systematically. The results showed that the expansion property was improved by material process modifications. During the de/lithiation processes of graphite, the expansion ratio in 30% ~ 50% SOC changed little because of the small interlayer spacing variation of the intercalated graphite. …

Preparation And Properties Of Gcp-Supported Palladium Particles Composite Towards Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis, Ying-Chao Wang, Zi-Zai Ma, Yi-Fan Wu, Xiao-Guang Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Ammonia (NH3) plays an essential role in agriculture and modern industries. Electrochemical fixation of nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NRR) under ambient conditions with renewable electricity is a promising strategy to replace the industrial Haber-Bosch method. However, it usually suffers from extremely poor ammonia yield and low Faraday efficiency due to the poor electrocatalysts. Therefore, intensive studies have been devoted to developing efficient NRR catalysts till now. Among them, palladium (Pd) can capture protons in the aqueous phase to form stable α-PdH, which balances the competitive adsorption between nitrogen and protons as well as reduces the …

Mothers and newborns have a natural physiological requirement to be together immediately after birth. A newborn has a keen sense of smell and will instinctively seek out the mother's nipple and begin breastfeeding if placed skin-to-skin with her. This practice is known as Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). It was first suggested in 1978 and has been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a means to ensure successful breastfeeding. It is well documented that KMC is associated with positive breastfeeding outcomes, particularly in cases where breastfeeding is exclusive and, on average, continued for 3 months or longer. Studies of …

Transitions In Palliative Care: Referral Time And Healthcare Utilization In Advanced Stage Colon, Rectal And Lung Cancer Patients., Ann Lawani
Dissertations
Background: Despite lung, colon, and rectal cancer being the leading and third leading cause of cancer-related death among both men and women respectively, few studies have examined Palliative Care Consultation (PCC) on healthcare utilization (HCU) in individuals with advanced stage diagnosis in this disease cohort. Extant research shows advanced stage cancer patients receive aggressive treatments, within the last 30 days of life. Palliative care is linked to less aggressive cancer treatment, and palliative interventions applied early, at diagnosis of advanced cancer, is more favorable for improving symptom and disease management. Patients and family members with early PCC are better informed …

Cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV) and other electroanalytical methods have been applied to molten chloride salts to study metal ion behavior. These studies have been useful for understanding and optimizing the electrowinning of metals. Notable ions that have been studied are rare earth and actinide metal ions in LiCl-KCl salts. However, the behavior of lanthanum (La3+) ions in some molten chlorides or chloride mixtures (e.g., CaCl2) has not been studied. CV experiments were conducted to evaluate La3+ behavior in CaCl2-LiCl and CaCl2 and were compared to La3+ behavior in …
