Evaluating The Impact Of Aggregate Size And Reinforcement On Alkali-Silica Reaction In Concrete Through Nondestructive Testing Techniques, Li Ai, David Bianco, Vafa Soltangharaei, Rafal Anay, Mahmoud Bayat, Paul Ziehl Mar 2026

Evaluating The Impact Of Aggregate Size And Reinforcement On Alkali-Silica Reaction In Concrete Through Nondestructive Testing Techniques, Li Ai, David Bianco, Vafa Soltangharaei, Rafal Anay, Mahmoud Bayat, Paul Ziehl

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This research investigates different nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods to assess concrete under alkali-silica reaction (ASR) development. Four methods including acoustic emission (AE), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), crack width measurement, and strain measurement were applied to reactive and control specimens under accelerated ASR conditioning. The innovation lies in using NDE methods to monitor concrete with varying aggregate sizes, quantifying method sensitivity through measured indices, and highlighting the effectiveness of each method to capture ASR development. The results indicate that the unconfined reactive fine-aggregate sample exhibited isotropic expansion, while coarse-aggregate specimens showed around 50 % greater longitudinal expansion and AE cumulative signal …

Reliving 10 Years Old: Descriptive Insights Into Retro Gaming, Nick Ballou, Nick Bowman, T. Hakman, Andrew Przybylski Mar 2026

Reliving 10 Years Old: Descriptive Insights Into Retro Gaming, Nick Ballou, Nick Bowman, T. Hakman, Andrew Przybylski

Media Studies - All Scholarship

As video games and players age, some are drawn to retro titles, operationalized here as games from the 1970s–early 2000s. This trend has sparked growing interest among researchers and the games industry in areas such as consumer behavior, nostalgia, and well-being. However, little is known about naturalistic retro gaming—who plays them, and what time periods players revisit. We analyze 1,099 players’ logged session histories on Nintendo Switch classic consoles (e.g., Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64), totaling 13,000 hr. We find that retro gaming increases with age until around 40; that people tend to revisit consoles popular when they were 5–13 …

Evolutionary Conservation Of Midline Axon Guidance Activity Between Drosophila And Tribolium Frazzled, Piyasi Ghosh, Benjamin C. Wadsworth, Logan Terry, Timothy A. Evans Mar 2026

Evolutionary Conservation Of Midline Axon Guidance Activity Between Drosophila And Tribolium Frazzled, Piyasi Ghosh, Benjamin C. Wadsworth, Logan Terry, Timothy A. Evans

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The regulation of midline crossing of axons is of fundamental importance for the proper development of nervous system connectivity in bilaterian animals. A number of conserved axon guidance signaling pathways coordinate to attract or repel axons at the nervous system midline to ensure the proper regulation of midline crossing. The attractive Netrin-Frazzled/DCC (Net-Fra) signaling pathway is widely conserved among bilaterians, but it is not clear whether the mechanisms by which Net and Fra promote midline crossing are also conserved. In Drosophila, Fra can promote midline crossing via Netrin-dependent and Netrin-independent mechanisms, by acting as a canonical midline attractive receptor and …

Explainable Machine Learning And Life Cycle Assessment For Sustainable Design Of Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Concrete, Xiao Tan, Jianglei Xing, Soroush Mahjoubi, Pengwei Guo, Ziyao Wei, Yuan Wang, Jie Ren, Li Ai, Weina Meng, Yi Bao Mar 2026

Explainable Machine Learning And Life Cycle Assessment For Sustainable Design Of Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Concrete, Xiao Tan, Jianglei Xing, Soroush Mahjoubi, Pengwei Guo, Ziyao Wei, Yuan Wang, Jie Ren, Li Ai, Weina Meng, Yi Bao

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Conventional asphalt concrete has a limited lifespan due to cracking, deformation, and environmental degradation, driving the development of fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete (FRAC). However, key gaps remain in current data-driven FRAC studies due to small and homogeneous datasets, “black-box” machine learning models, and trade-offs between mechanical-sustainable performance, failing to provide a transparent understanding of features governing FRAC behaviors. This paper proposes a framework integrating explainable artificial intelligence and life cycle assessment (LCA) to advance mechanical and sustainable design of FRAC. A dataset of 2490 laboratory samples covers 15 input features and 3 mechanical outputs. Eight machine learning models, along with a …

Tourniquet Tester, Tyler Offerman, Thuy Nguyen, Ryan Ly, Cody Hoeptner Mar 2026

Tourniquet Tester, Tyler Offerman, Thuy Nguyen, Ryan Ly, Cody Hoeptner

Biomedical Engineering

The Tourniquet Tester is a device intended to be used as a standardized testing device for tourniquets. Due to the lack of a standard testing device for testing tourniquets that can produce accurate and reproducible results, it is difficult to test the efficacy of tourniquets currently being sold on the market. A standard testing device that can produce consistent and reproducible results would allow tourniquet manufacturing companies to properly test the efficacy of their product and develop proper guidelines and directions for users of the product. Medical professionals and military personnel who may use tourniquets in their line of work …

Babycheck, Ayla V. Campbell, Eleanor M. Tweedy Mar 2026

Babycheck, Ayla V. Campbell, Eleanor M. Tweedy

Biomedical Engineering

The BabyCheck project was created to design and test a device that can collect a small blood sample from the fetal scalp during labor. The goal is to reduce uncertainty when fetal heart rate tracings are unclear, especially in Category II cases where it can be difficult for clinicians to decide the safest next step. Current monitoring methods either rely on interpreting heart rate patterns or use more invasive procedures to gather biochemical information. BabyCheck was designed to provide a simpler and more controlled way to collect a small blood sample that could help guide these decisions.

The final prototype …

Driver Behavior Analyzer 2.0: A Modular Framework For Interpretable Driver Safety Analysis From Obd-Ii And Gps Telemetry, Sangwhan Cha, Venkata Sundar Kamesh Durvasula Mar 2026

Driver Behavior Analyzer 2.0: A Modular Framework For Interpretable Driver Safety Analysis From Obd-Ii And Gps Telemetry, Sangwhan Cha, Venkata Sundar Kamesh Durvasula

Harrisburg University Other Works

Driver behavior analysis plays a central role in advancing road safety and enabling data-driven driver feedback. Although commercial telematics platforms offer sophisticated analytics, they are frequently expensive, proprietary, and optimized for enterprise-scale use. At the same time, low-cost On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) adapters make telemetry collection widely accessible, but they typically do not provide higher-level behavioral interpretation.

In this paper, we present Driver Behavior Analyzer 2.0 (DBA 2.0), an offline-first, modular analytics framework that converts OBD-II and GPS telemetry into interpretable safety insights. DBA 2.0 supports ingestion of telemetry logs in CSV and JSON formats, data normalization, rule-based detection of …

Jaundease Phototherapy Vest Test Plan, Sujay Panthulu, Jasdev Banwait, Gwynn Moss, Solomon M. Fernandez Mar 2026

Jaundease Phototherapy Vest Test Plan, Sujay Panthulu, Jasdev Banwait, Gwynn Moss, Solomon M. Fernandez

Biomedical Engineering

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition affecting more than 60% of newborns, caused by an excess buildup of bilirubin in the blood due to the liver’s limited ability to process it efficiently [1]. The standard treatment involves hospital-based phototherapy, where infants are placed in incubators under blue light to break down bilirubin in the skin. Although effective, this approach requires infants to remain under the lights for 12–18 hours per day, often with eye protection, and separated from their parents—disrupting early bonding and potentially contributing to toxic stress that can impact neurological and emotional development [2]. While at-home phototherapy solutions …

Improving Cellular Retention And Distribution To Promote Arteriogenesis In A Mouse Model Of Chronic Arterial Occlusion, Nancy Huang Mar 2026

Improving Cellular Retention And Distribution To Promote Arteriogenesis In A Mouse Model Of Chronic Arterial Occlusion, Nancy Huang

Biomedical Engineering

Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease (PAOD) affects millions of people in the United States, creating pain, discomfort, and limited mobility due to restricted blood flow from obstructed arteries. While current treatments include lifestyle changes and revascularization procedures, these options are often insufficient or inaccessible because of procedural pain and socioeconomic barriers. In some cases, this can lead to critical limb ischemia and amputation as a last resort. Increasing blood flow to the extremities by enhancing collateral vessel growth, a biological process called arteriogenesis, with cell-based therapies can redirect blood flow around obstructions and has potential to mitigate and treat the effects …

Iud Insertion Pain Management, Sandhya Sridhar, Olivia Armas, Lucy Campochiaro

Biomedical Engineering

This project focuses on developing an atraumatic cervical stabilization device that serves as a modern alternative to the traditional tenaculum used during IUD insertion procedures. Current devices rely on sharp metal prongs that pierce the cervix and often cause significant pain and bleeding. The goal of this project is to design a device that provides the same stability and control for clinicians while eliminating the need to puncture cervical tissue. The device is intended to be used by gynecologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, primary care physicians, or any medical professional performing an IUD insertion. The device is intended to be …

Cpap Belly Prevent, Alek Corpuz, Emma Hoffman, Danielle Tran Mar 2026

Cpap Belly Prevent, Alek Corpuz, Emma Hoffman, Danielle Tran

Biomedical Engineering

Neonates with low gestation periods often face complications such as respiratory distress syndrome, or RDS, which increases risk for complications such as necrotizing enterocolitis. Use of bCPAP helps facilitate regular breathing, but can also force air into the stomach and consequently cause abdominal distention. Clinicians currently use an already inserted feeding tube to vent the accumulated air, however this interrupts the feeding process.

The PreVent device was developed to allow for simultaneous feeding and venting. The dual function minimizes interruptions to NICU nurse workflow and improves capability to relieve abdominal distention before the onset of adverse complications.

Newborn Spinal Needle, Allison Inouye, Kyle Morton, Evan Russell Mar 2026

Newborn Spinal Needle, Allison Inouye, Kyle Morton, Evan Russell

Biomedical Engineering

Spinal punctures, or lumbar punctures, are important diagnostic procedures used to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to diagnose issues in the central nervous system (CNS) such as meningitis. While these procedures are routinely performed on adult and neonatal patients, the current tools are not optimized for use on newborns. Existing spinal needles are often modified versions of adult devices, leading to challenges in fluid collection efficiency, user ergonomics, and patient safety when used in neonatal care.

The Newborn Spinal Needle Project aims to design and develop a spinal needle specifically optimized for neonatal anatomy and clinical workflow. The goal is to …

A Closer Look At The Innovator: The Interplay Between Divergent And Convergent Processes Of Self-Regulation, Ronald Bledow, Hye Jung Eun, Lien Vossaert

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Creativity and innovation are essential for modern organizations. While abundant research has helped to better understand creativity in everyday work life, considerably less attention has been paid to how individuals achieve creative performance during the implementation of innovation projects. We articulate a dialectical interplay between divergent and convergent processes of self-regulation that supports creative performance in innovation projects. We propose that a divergent exploration orientation contributes to creative performance by inducing a broad search for novelty and by stimulating iteration—repeated cycles of experimentation and refinement. Convergent processes of self-regulation—outcome focus and planning—strengthen the relationship between divergent processes and creative performance. …

An Intersectional Framework For Effectively Mentoring Latinas In Stem Fields, Rosalynn A. Vega Mar 2026

An Intersectional Framework For Effectively Mentoring Latinas In Stem Fields, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications

While Latinas are underrepresented across all areas of academia, this problem is especially severe in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This chapter offers a “best practices,” step‑by-step guide for how to effectively mentor Latinas in STEM fields—drawing from interdisciplinary concepts, culled from critical race studies, statistics, and anthropology—and personal experience as a Latina in STEM, mentor, and mentee. Crenshaw’s (1989) theory of intersectionality, Farmer’s (1999) notion of structural violence, and multivariate statistical modeling is used to demonstrate that intersectional inequality can be traced back to social structures. Multi‑gender and multiethnic mentoring by individuals who are motivated to …

The Space Between Seams, Rachel M. Clarke Mar 2026

The Space Between Seams, Rachel M. Clarke

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Through the use of form, softly muted colors, and play with transparent materials, I create ethereal drawings and immersive installation experiences. I work with the softness in fabric and the controlled detail in drawing. In doing so, I am enveloping myself in the drive to create, pushing the viewer to be spatially aware of their bodies existing in space.

This body of work exists as I am processing the state of my own body. We engage and perceive the world through our bodies. The fabric panels I create call to the porosity and permeability of human skin. The skin contains …

Sweet Is The Work, Allie M. Wheeler Mar 2026

Sweet Is The Work, Allie M. Wheeler

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Sweet is the Work is a collection of collagraph prints, collages, and sculptural artworks created through a dialogue between surface textures, colors, and imagery, sourced from personal experiences and the home environment that nurtured them. My artwork functions as a visual journal of my memories of living on a family farm in Delta, Utah, in an engaged religious lifestyle. Daily life at home was filled with responsibilities, from sweeping the floor to tending crops and livestock. Tasks like preserving food were guided less by necessity than by tradition. A history of family record keeping inspires my process of documentation. Each …

Long-Term Consumer Welfare, Rebecca Haw Allensworth Mar 2026

Long-Term Consumer Welfare, Rebecca Haw Allensworth

Vanderbilt Law Review

Consumer welfare is not monolithic. Antitrust policy that pursues it as a goal must trade off the various incommensurable values that make up the consumer experience. Perhaps the most important of these-and the most poorly theorized-is the trade-off between consumers' short-term and long-term welfare. Many business practices that might be challenged as exclusionary or unreasonable restraints of trade can benefit consumers on one time horizon while hurting them on another. Often the trade-off is between short-term quality or price effects and long-term consequences for competitive entry and incentives to innovate. These disparate effects are well understood by economists, yet economics …

Promoting Maternal Health Through Community-Based Education: A Quality Improvement Initiative On Hypertension And Pregnancy Complications In An Outpatient Setting, Areli Mendez Mar 2026

Promoting Maternal Health Through Community-Based Education: A Quality Improvement Initiative On Hypertension And Pregnancy Complications In An Outpatient Setting, Areli Mendez

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy remain one of the leading causes of maternal and fetal complications worldwide, particularly among underserved and minority populations. Spanish-speaking women often experience barriers related to language, limited health literacy, and reduced access to culturally appropriate education, which may delay the recognition of warning signs associated with pregnancy complications. Early education and awareness are essential to improve maternal outcomes and promote timely medical intervention.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally tailored educational intervention designed to improve maternal knowledge regarding hypertension during pregnancy …

Joint Capacity Allocation And Job Assignment Under Uncertainty, Peng Wang, Yun Fong Lim, Gar Goei Loke Mar 2026

Joint Capacity Allocation And Job Assignment Under Uncertainty, Peng Wang, Yun Fong Lim, Gar Goei Loke

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study a multi-period joint capacity allocation and job assignment problem. The goal is to simultaneously allocate resources across J different supply nodes and assign jobs from I different demand origins to these J supply nodes, so as to maximize the reward for matching or minimize the cost of failure to match. We consider three features: (i) supply is replenishable after some random time, (ii) demand is random, and (iii) demand can wait and needs not be fully fulfilled immediately. Such problems emerge in many service management settings such as fleet re-positioning for car-sharing, and patient management in healthcare. We …

Interest Fit Beyond The Riasec: The Comprehensive Assessment Of Basic Interests-O*Net (Cabin-Net), Chu Chu, Kevin A. Hoff, Zihan Liu, Nicholas F. Heimpel, Anthony Greco, Frederick L. Oswald, James Rounds

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Over the past half-century, Holland’s RIASEC model has dominated vocational interest research. Although the RIASEC categories effectively capture general occupational themes, their breadth obscures meaningful variability across underlying basic interests, which are more refined interest scales. In this research, we adapted the Comprehensive Assessment of Basic Interests (CABIN; Su et ., 2019) to be used alongside O*NET for assessing interest fit, resulting in the 60-item CABIN-NET that measures 20 basic interest scales organized under RIASEC domains. In Study 1, we refined items for the CABIN-NET using a nationally representative adult sample (N = 768). In Studies 2 and 3, we …

Global Value Chains And Economic Inequality, Vivek Soundararajan, Ari Van Assche, Hari Bapuji, Gokhan Ertug Mar 2026

Global Value Chains And Economic Inequality, Vivek Soundararajan, Ari Van Assche, Hari Bapuji, Gokhan Ertug

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In their inaugural editorial, Van Assche and De Marchi (2024) argued that meaningful progress in international business policy requires a more fine-grained understanding of how private international business practices intersect with public policy objectives. This editorial builds on that insight by applying it to a critical yet still underexplored issue – one on which we hope to see more research in this journal: the role of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and global value chains (GVCs) in shaping economic inequality within developing economies. Decisions related to sourcing, contracting, and GVC governance are inherently distributional rather than neutral, with important implications for how …

Collaborative Work Management Technologies And Managerial Intensity In U.S. Corporations: An Examination, Piyush Gulati, Arianna Marchetti, Phanish Puranam Mar 2026

Collaborative Work Management Technologies And Managerial Intensity In U.S. Corporations: An Examination, Piyush Gulati, Arianna Marchetti, Phanish Puranam

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Do digital technologies reinforce managerial hierarchies or, instead, make them less relevant? We propose that the answer to this question depends on the nature of the technology: specifically, its relative impact on managers' capacity to supervise and on subordinates' need for supervision. Applying this framework to collaborative work management (CWM) technologies that facilitate real-time collaboration, communication, and task coordination, we predict that the adoption of such technologies should reduce managerial intensity and increase decentralization in organizations. To test this prediction, we use a difference-in-differences design on a novel data set built from over 26 million job listings (Lightcast) and over …
