The Bean Pie: Black Muslims And Identity In Early Twentieth Century Detroit, Alexandra Christine Bicknell Jun 2022

The Bean Pie: Black Muslims And Identity In Early Twentieth Century Detroit, Alexandra Christine Bicknell

Masters Theses

The bean pie is the product of culinary traditions set forth by the Nation of Islam. Nation members used the navy bean to whip up a custardy dessert utilizing religiously approved ingredients. Milk, eggs, brown sugar, and whole wheat flour transformed a savory, well-cooked bean into a sweet treat. Pies made from beans were not invented by the Nation of Islam, but they became symbolic of the culture and institutions established by Black Muslims in America. The Nation of Islam shaped Michigan and the midwestern region’s social and cultural identity. The Nation promoted that Black people ought to have power …

Tracking Control Of Uavs With Uncertainty And Input Constraints, Shihab Ahmed, Wenjie Dong Jun 2022

Tracking Control Of Uavs With Uncertainty And Input Constraints, Shihab Ahmed, Wenjie Dong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper considers the position and attitude tracking control problem of a vertical take-off and landing unmanned aerial vehicle with uncertainty and input constraints. Considering the parametric and non-parametric uncertainties in the dynamics of systems, a robust adaptive tracking controller is proposed with the aid of the special structure of the dynamics of the system. Considering the uncertainty and input constraints, a robust adaptive saturation controller is proposed with the aid of an auxiliary compensated system. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Representing The Good And Bad: Fmri Signatures During The Encoding Of Multisensory Positive, Negative, And Neutral Events, Preston P. Thakral, Ryan Bottary, Elizabeth A. Kensinger Jun 2022

Representing The Good And Bad: Fmri Signatures During The Encoding Of Multisensory Positive, Negative, And Neutral Events, Preston P. Thakral, Ryan Bottary, Elizabeth A. Kensinger

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Few studies have examined how multisensory emotional experiences are processed and encoded into memory. Here, we aimed to determine whether, at encoding, activity within functionally-defined visual- and auditory-processing brain regions discriminated the emotional category (i.e., positive, negative, or neutral) of the multisensory (audio-visual) events. Participants incidentally encoded positive, negative, and neutral multisensory stimuli during event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Following a 3-h post-encoding delay, their memory for studied stimuli was tested, allowing us to identify emotion-category-specific subsequent-memory effects focusing on medial temporal lobe regions (i.e., amygdala, hippocampus) and visual- and auditory-processing regions. We used a combination of univariate and …

Evaluating Loblolly Pine Bioenergy Development Potential Using Ahp Integrated Weighted Overlay And Network Optimization In Virginia, Usa, Huynh Truong Gia Nguyen, Erik Lyttek, Pankaj Lal, Taylor Wieczerak, Trang Luong

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Bioenergy is an essential piece of the United States’ (US) energy portfolio. However, questions surrounding bioenergy sourcing and adoption at the producer level remain persistent challenges, hampering proliferation in areas not already available. To establish new industries, individual regions must be evaluated for various bioenergy feedstocks and incorporate elements for environmental, societal, and economic growth. This study assessed the overall potential for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) in Virginia, US, for domestic bioenergy by utilizing stakeholder preferences for site selection and biomass potential from a regional growth and yield model. Our results show that bioenergy in the state requires widespread planting …

Harmonica Pedagogy For The Full Inclusion Instrumental Music Classroom, Expanding Opportunities For Students With Disabilities, George Wallace Miklas

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The harmonica was once taught in American public schools coast to coast from the 1920s through the 1940s when imports of harmonicas were curtailed due to World War II's efforts. Since then, American public-school instrumental music curricula have long forgotten the only wind instrument that makes music when the student inhales or exhales. The harmonica provides a natural calming effect to the player and medical benefits, including being a tool for overcoming mental health issues and expressing needs and feelings without words. During the era when the harmonica was taught, pedagogy lacked uniformity. Consequently, confusion about the instrument's unique tuning …

Religiosity: Does It Attenuate Or Exacerbate The Relationship Between Past Childhood Sexual Abuse And Depression, Anxiety And Stress?, Karmen Lashawn Payne

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Individuals who experience childhood sexual abuse (CSA) suffer a global injury. In addition to the impact sexual abuse has on their mental, emotional, sexual, and physical well-being, victims of CSA also experience spiritual pain. The sequelae of pain that follow CSA may lead nonbelievers and Christians to approach churches for desperately needed help. Churches may influence the experience of those seeking help. However, the degree to which ministries are helpful is conditional on their knowledge of and preparation for working with adult victims of past CSA. Past negative sexual experiences may also harm self-cognitions, potentially influencing survivors’ ability to approach …

An Argument Against Unbounded Arrest Power: The Expressive Fourth Amendment And Protesting While Black, Karen J. Pita Loor Jun 2022

An Argument Against Unbounded Arrest Power: The Expressive Fourth Amendment And Protesting While Black, Karen J. Pita Loor

Michigan Law Review

Protesting is supposed to be revered in our democracy, considered “as American as apple pie” in our nation’s mythology. But the actual experiences of the 2020 racial justice protesters showed that this supposed reverence for political dissent and protest is more akin to American folklore than reality on the streets. The images from those streets depicted police officers clad in riot gear and armed with shields, batons, and “less than” lethal weapons aggressively arresting protesters, often en masse. In the first week of the George Floyd protests, police arrested roughly 10,000 people, and approximately 78 percent of those arrests were …

Most Favored Racial Hierarchy: The Ever-Evolving Ways Of The Supreme Court’S Superordination Of Whiteness, David Simson

Michigan Law Review

This Article engages in a critical comparative analysis of the recent history and likely future trajectory of the Supreme Court’s constitutional jurisprudence in matters of race and religion to uncover new aspects of the racial project that Reggie Oh has recently called the “racial superordination” of whiteness—the reinforcing of the superior status of whites in American society by, among other things, prioritizing their interests in structuring constitutional doctrine. This analysis shows that the Court is increasingly widening the gap between conceptions of, and levels of protection provided for, equality in the contexts of race and religion in ways that prioritize …

The primary goal of this Article is to help expose those structural issues and the ethically troublesome practices of adoption attorneys as the most important Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) case …
