Fiscal Policy And Macroeconomic Stability In Nigeria: How Effective Are Fiscal Rules?, E. A. Udeaja, J. M. Tule, Z. A. El-Yakub, J. A. Rotimi

Economic and Financial Review

The paper examines the impact of fiscal rules on macroeconomic stability in Nigeria. Using data spanning 2005Q1-2021Q4, the study adopts the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach and constructs output volatility to account for the role of gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), tax revenue, government size, and trade openness in assessing macroeconomic stability. The findings reveal that, Nigeria has deviated from the established rule limits since 2017. The study also finds that increase in government size and GFCF are instrumental to attaining macroeconomic stability during economic crisis. On the other hand, increasing trade openness and taxation are inimical to the macroeconomic …

Public Debt Sustainability Measures And Its Growth Implications For The Nigerian Economy, O. W. Gobna, G. Usman, S. S. Mohammed Jun 2022

Public Debt Sustainability Measures And Its Growth Implications For The Nigerian Economy, O. W. Gobna, G. Usman, S. S. Mohammed

Economic and Financial Review

This study utilises the linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models to investigate the impact of public debt sustainability measures and its growth implications for the Nigerian economy from 1981 and 2021. The results suggest that public debt-to-oil revenue ratio (PDOR) has a significantly negative effect on economic growth both in the long- and short-run. It also shows that public debt-to-non-oil revenue ratio has an asymmetric effect in the short-run and a positive relationship on economic growth in the long-run. The study concludes that economic growth needs to be enhanced through improved government non-oil revenue. Therefore, to bolster economic …

Do Geopolitical Risks And Economic Uncertainty Matter For Fiscal Sustainability In Nigeria?, E. A. Udeaja, S. T. Zimbo, P. F. Offum, B. O. Fashoro Jun 2022

Do Geopolitical Risks And Economic Uncertainty Matter For Fiscal Sustainability In Nigeria?, E. A. Udeaja, S. T. Zimbo, P. F. Offum, B. O. Fashoro

Economic and Financial Review

This paper attempts to answer the question about whether geopolitical risks and economic uncertainty matter for fiscal sustainability in Nigeria. The paper employs the ARDL model and bounds test approach to cointegration to analyse quarterly data for the period 2010Q1 to 2021Q4. The main finding indicates that geopolitical risks significantly enhance fiscal sustainability in the short- and long-run, while economic uncertainty does not. Accordingly, the study recommends the implementation of policies aimed at maximising the benefits of rising oil price triggered by geopolitical risks to improve fiscal sustainability in Nigeria.

Does The Okun's Law Hold In The Brics Countries And Nigeria?, U. Aminu, A. Abel, A. R. Garba Jun 2022

Does The Okun's Law Hold In The Brics Countries And Nigeria?, U. Aminu, A. Abel, A. R. Garba

Economic and Financial Review

The unemployment-output nexus is a topical issue in developing countries, particularly with some evidence against the trade-off suggested by Okun’s law. This study, therefore, investigates the validity of Okun’s law in the BRICS countries and Nigeria, based on annual data between 1993 and 2020, using the Panel ARDL model. We validate the Okun’s law with evidence of an inverse relationship between output and unemployment in the BRICS countries and Nigeria. We, therefore, recommend that policymakers should boost both nominal and potential output by fully diversifying the economy to enhance productivity and reduction in the unemployment rate. We also recommend that …

Codes Of Conduct In Student Media: An Analysis Of Student Perceptions Of Ethics Codes, Torstein A. Rehn Jun 2022

Codes Of Conduct In Student Media: An Analysis Of Student Perceptions Of Ethics Codes, Torstein A. Rehn

Journalism

The following is a study into students' perceptions of codes of conduct in student media organizations. Codes of conduct in a media setting have long been a focus of research, but little research has been done into their application in a student media environment. Student media organizations operate in a unique setting where they are entirely staffed by novice reporters. These organizations double as training grounds for students and as legitimate news sources. This study seeks to analyze this phenomenon by interviewing student media members. The goal of this study is to understand what current students seek in a code …

Advising 101 For The Growing Field Of Social Media Influencers, Stasia Skalbania

Washington Law Review

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) protects consumers from unfair and deceptive business practices. In 2019, the FTC released the “Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers Guide” (herein referred to as the “2019 Influencer Guide”). The 2019 Influencer Guide outlines advertisers’ and endorsers’ specific responsibilities relating to the advertising and marketing of products on social media platforms. Despite the extensive information provided within the 2019 Influencer Guide, there is still great confusion regarding endorsement disclosure requirements, and many brands and influencers are not in compliance with FTC recommendations. This Comment provides guidance to brands and social media influencers on how to …

Renewing The Vagueness Challenge To Crimes Involving Moral Turpitude, Melissa London Jun 2022

Renewing The Vagueness Challenge To Crimes Involving Moral Turpitude, Melissa London

Washington Law Review

Noncitizens who have been convicted of a “crime involving moral turpitude” (CIMT) under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) can be deported. However, the INA fails to provide a definition for “moral turpitude” or a list of crimes that necessarily involve “moral turpitude.” As a result, judges are given wide discretion to decide when a crime is morally reprehensible enough to render a noncitizen deportable. This moral determination in the CIMT analysis has led to disparate results among the lower courts, which deprives noncitizens of meaningful notice of what conduct could render them deportable. In 1951, the Supreme Court held …

(Wp 2022-05) Change In And Changing Economics, John B. Davis Jun 2022

(Wp 2022-05) Change In And Changing Economics, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

Change in economics has likely always been a subject of discussion in economics and political economy. That discussion may have languished in the first post-World War II decades when neoclassicism was ascendent and dominated economics, but the emergence of game theory, more recently behavioral economics, and a variety of other new fields and approaches in economics since the 1980s has re-invigorated interest in the subject so that now there are many views on it. Yet systematic investigation of what change in economics involves has advanced little. Change is clearly always on-going in any discipline, but when it is said there …

Learning With Your Buddies: An Investigation Of Community Based Ux Design Learning On Discord, Grace Ling

Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses

Online communities have been a major part of how people connect with others to learn about different perspectives. In this thesis, I examine ways people use Discord, one of the major online community platforms, to learn UX design.

In this research, I designed a study, collected data from the Design Buddies Discord, and conducted semantic content analysis to investigate the community learners, job seekers, and mentors’ dialogues. I then used social network analysis to uncover patterns in connections. Lastly, I conducted a qualitative evaluation to survey and to understand the usefulness of Design Buddies.

The results show that a balance …

Biopolymers such as lignin are gaining renewed appeal due to the need for sustainable materials. Herein, we used chelator-mediated Fenton (CMF) chemistry to oxidize Kraft lignin to develop sustainable super absorbent materials. The CMF chemistry adds oxygen, opens aromatic rings and increases COOH content, producing hydrophilic lignin without depolymerization. UV absorption, molecular weight, elemental analysis, and titration were used to study the chemical compositions of CMF-processed lignin. Then the chemically modified hydrophilic lignin was used to produce lignin-based hydrogels utilizing an aqueous polymerization and cross-linking reaction that enabled tunable properties. The resulting lignin hydrogels absorbed water up to 96% and …

Investigating Pedestrian Distraction By Phone At Intersection Crossings, Safety Implications And Potential Treatments, Lusanni Mercedes Acosta Rodriguez Jun 2022

Investigating Pedestrian Distraction By Phone At Intersection Crossings, Safety Implications And Potential Treatments, Lusanni Mercedes Acosta Rodriguez

Dissertations

Road user distraction is a major safety concern. The issue is not only for drivers, but also for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians. Every year people are involved in potential and real crashes due to being distracted while walking/crossing streets. Although there are several ways by which pedestrians are distracted, phone use while crossing streets is among the riskier and growing behaviors. Crossing an intersection, especially those with heavy traffic, requires full attention from the individual. Inattentiveness to traffic while on a phone call, texting, web-surfing, listening to music before crossing a street can lead to a fatal crash. …

Once Mentally Ill, Always So? Maybe Yes. Maybe No: Addressing The 18 U.S.C. § 922(G)(4) Circuit Split And Lifetime Gun Bans For The (Formerly) Mentally Ill, Melissa J. Araiza

Nebraska Law Review

Under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(4), an individual who is adjudicated as mentally ill or who has received a prior involuntary commitment to a mental health institution may not possess a firearm. This federal code section was first established in the late 1960s, yet it remains unclear whether this regulation on firearms dispossession is a permanent or temporary disability. In Tyler v. Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department (Tyler III), Clifford Tyler brought an as-applied constitutional challenge against § 922(g)(4), alleging that the statute was unconstitutional because it prevented him from possessing a firearm even though he was no longer mentally ill and …

When The Math Matters: Improving Statistical Advocacy In Gerrymandering Litigation, Robin L. Juni

Nebraska Law Review

Lawyers regularly joke about their supposed inability to address mathematical issues. However, mathematical concepts are sometimes at the core of a legal dispute, and lawyers do a disservice to their clients if they are not able to engage in effective advocacy in these contexts. This Article discusses Gill v. Whitford, a gerrymandering dispute involving an important mathematical idea— the core statistical concept of regression analysis, particularly multivariable regression analysis—which Chief Justice Roberts referred to in Whitford as “sociological gobbledygook.” In fact, the mathematical analysis has crucial implications and connections to the legal issues. This Article explains the statistics behind that …

The Impact Of Focused Attention And Opening Monitoring Meditation Styles On Attention, Jennifer Wheary Jun 2022

The Impact Of Focused Attention And Opening Monitoring Meditation Styles On Attention, Jennifer Wheary

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Mindfulness meditation – often broken down into two distinct types, focused attention (FA) and open monitoring (OM) – has been associated with a range of affective and attentional benefits. Using an attentional blink (AB) paradigm that demonstrated improved attention for novice FA meditators, we explored whether novices who engaged in a single, brief bout of meditation exhibited any differences in alpha or theta power during meditation, and whether these differences were apparent by meditation type. In the AB paradigm, participants are asked to identify two targets, T1 and T2, which are separated by 200-500 ms. Our results showed no significant …

Equitable Assessment For Elementary Dual-Language Learners, Joliette Mandel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis points out the contradictions between the goals of standardized testing and the goals of dual-language elementary education. I argue that dual-language elementary schools in the New York City Department of Education would be better served by a performance assessment model to measure student and school accountability for several reasons. Performance assessment is more equitable for students who are marginalized by their race, language, or class. Many students who attend dual-language schools in the NYCDOE fall into all these categories. I will discuss in depth why standardized testing is failing students, particularly those in dual-language elementary programs. Next, I …
