Mathematical Minds: A Senior Seminar For The Mathematically-Minded, Kim Regnier Jongerius

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2022

This paper describes a successful senior seminar course that leads to interesting and fruitful conversations, allows and encourages enrollment by non-majors, provides opportunities for meaningful program assessment, and could easily be adapted to between one and four credits.

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Integrating Faith In The Calculus Classroom, Diana Schepens Jun 2022

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Integrating Faith In The Calculus Classroom, Diana Schepens

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2022

Calculus curriculum is often used as prerequisite material for upper division math and science courses. As such, it can be difficult to find space in the curriculum to accomplish intentional faith integration activities or assignments. I propose that rather than trying to find space for explicit faith integration content, instructors adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the presentation of the calculus curriculum so that faith integration can be woven together with calculus throughout an entire semester.

Catchem Before They Fall Through The Cracks: Implementation Of A Comprehensive Atherosclerosis Treatment Collaborative Health System Transition Of Care Multidisciplinary Clinic, Youssef Bessada, Taki Galanis, Brandi Thoma, Luis Eraso, Walter Kraft, Geno Merli, Dina Orapallo, Lynda Thomson, Heather Yenser

Pharmacy Presentations, Posters, and Grand Rounds

Introduction: Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a common atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease that increases the risk for fatal and non-fatal CV events. Guidelines for the treatment of PAD recommend that in addition to necessary revascularization, general CV prevention with optimal medical therapy is of utmost importance and management is recommended to be multidisciplinary. While the prevalence of PAD in various practices is high, physician awareness of the PAD diagnosis is relatively low and the pharmacological component of preventative CV care is often underutilized resulting in patients receiving less intensive treatment. With new pharmacological agents, including advances in antithrombotic therapy, contributing …

Us Consumer Identification Of The Health Benefits Of Dietary Fiber And Consideration Of Fiber When Making Food Choices, Christopher Gustafson, Devin J. Rose Jun 2022

Us Consumer Identification Of The Health Benefits Of Dietary Fiber And Consideration Of Fiber When Making Food Choices, Christopher Gustafson, Devin J. Rose

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

The purposes of this study were to (1) determine beliefs in the health benefits of dietary fiber, an under-consumed nutrient of public health concern, and (2) determine the relationship between beliefs about dietary fiber and consideration of fiber when making food choices. We conducted a nationally representative within-subject randomized online survey of 42,018 US primary shoppers in May–June 2021. Participants selected health benefits they believed were associated with consumption of fiber from a list of six benefits recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), one indirect benefit, and one unrelated benefit. Respondents then indicated which nutrients, if any, they …

The Incorporation Of And Engagement In Engineering Design In High School Biology, Margaret Elizabeth Parker Jun 2022

The Incorporation Of And Engagement In Engineering Design In High School Biology, Margaret Elizabeth Parker

Theses and Dissertations

The Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards propose that students learn concepts and practices related to engineering as well as science. Currently the research surrounding how engineering practices through engineering design are implemented in the life sciences such as high school biology is limited. To explore how engineering design is included in a biology class, a case study was conducted in two high school biology classrooms. This qualitative case study examined how high school biology teachers incorporated an engineering design project into a science curricular unit and how high school biology students engaged in an …

Improvement Of Ex Vivo Testing Methods For Spine Biomechanical Characterization, Aubrie Lisa Taylor Jun 2022

Improvement Of Ex Vivo Testing Methods For Spine Biomechanical Characterization, Aubrie Lisa Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation contributed three main areas to flexibility testing and biomechanical characterization of human spinal segments. The first was a literature review of existing testing methodology, the second examined common spine fixation procedures, and the third developed an improved fixation method. Spine biomechanical characterization is the primary technique for assessing the healthy, diseased, and surgically treated response of spinal tissues. However, despite decades of use, no standard testing protocol or reporting methodology for flexibility testing conditions has been established. As part of the present work, a comprehensive, systematic literature review was performed, and the methods sections of 242 relevant journal …

Radiation Isolation And The Impact Of Care: Nursing Knowledge And Perception Of Radiation Risks, Bae P. Chu Jun 2022

Radiation Isolation And The Impact Of Care: Nursing Knowledge And Perception Of Radiation Risks, Bae P. Chu

Dissertations and Theses

Background: The safety challenges encountered when employing ionizing radiation to treat patients and manage radiation exposure and contamination have been well established in previous research. However, little is known about nurses’ understanding of the risks associated with ionizing radiation and how they respond to their own perceptions of risk. Although a wealth of literature shows an association between radiation treatment and negative patient experiences, there remains a lack of understanding of the basis of these perceptions among nurses. Increased ionizing radiation diagnoses and treatment means that nurses are at a higher risk of radiation exposure today than thirty years ago. …

Parasitism Of Corn Earworm, Helicoverpa Zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), By Tachinid Flies In Cultivated Hemp, Armando Falcon-Brindis, John O. Stireman Iii, Zenaida J. Viloria, Raul T. Villanueva Jun 2022

Parasitism Of Corn Earworm, Helicoverpa Zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), By Tachinid Flies In Cultivated Hemp, Armando Falcon-Brindis, John O. Stireman Iii, Zenaida J. Viloria, Raul T. Villanueva

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In a survey on hemp grown in western Kentucky we found an average of 27.8 CEW larvae per plant. We recorded 45% parasitism of CEW in these fields by two species of tachinid flies, Winthemia rufopicta and Lespesia aletiae. Most parasitized larvae were third to sixth instars at the time of collection. We found up to 22 tachinid eggs per host larva, 89% of which typically bore between 1 and 5 eggs on the thorax. 45.9% of CEW bearing eggs died. The number of tachinid eggs per host was unrelated to host body mass, but both the number of tachinid …

Honey Bee Genetic Stock Determines Deformed Wing Virus Symptom Severity But Not Viral Load Or Dissemination Following Pupal Exposure, Hannah J. Penn, Michael D. Simone-Finstrom, Yanping Chen, Kristen B. Healy Jun 2022

Honey Bee Genetic Stock Determines Deformed Wing Virus Symptom Severity But Not Viral Load Or Dissemination Following Pupal Exposure, Hannah J. Penn, Michael D. Simone-Finstrom, Yanping Chen, Kristen B. Healy

Faculty Publications

Honey bees exposed to Varroa mites incur substantial physical damage in addition to potential exposure to vectored viruses such as Deformed wing virus (DWV) that exists as three master variants (DWV-A, DWV-B, and DWV-C) and recombinants. Although mite-resistant bees have been primarily bred to mitigate the impacts of Varroa mites, mite resistance may be associated with increased tolerance or resistance to the vectored viruses. The goal of our study is to determine if five honey bee stocks (Carniolan, Italian, Pol-Line, Russian, and Saskatraz) differ in their resistance or tolerance to DWV based on prior breeding for mite resistance. We injected …
