PRECISe Preschool Speech and Language Publications
This study aimed to pilot test, assess usability and utility of, and identify barriers to implementation for the Profile of Preschool Communication (PPC) - a new data collection tool designed to support outcome monitoring in preschool speech-language programs and practice-based research. Methods. This pilot study was conducted with three sites in the Ontario Preschool Speech and Language (PSL) program. Twenty-three speech-language pathologists used the PPC for all outcome monitoring assessments for 2-3-months and provided feedback about their experience using it in practice. Then, 18 of the 23 speech-language pathologists completed online surveys to rate usability and utility, and report …

The Albany pitcher plant, Cephalotus follicularis, has evolved cup-shaped leaves and a carnivorous habit completely independently from other lineages of pitcher plants. It is the only species in the family Cephalotaceae and is restricted to a small region of Western Australia. Here, we used metabarcoding to characterize the bacterial and eukaryotic communities living in C. follicularis pitchers at two different sites. Bacterial and eukaryotic communities were correlated in both richness and composition; however, the factors associated with richness were not the same across bacteria and eukaryotes, with bacterial richness differing with fluid color, and eukaryotic richness differing with the …
Role Of Cmyc In The Proliferation And Function Of Cytokine Induced Human Memory Like Nk Cells, Arinola Daramola
Role Of Cmyc In The Proliferation And Function Of Cytokine Induced Human Memory Like Nk Cells, Arinola Daramola
Biotechnology Theses
Natural killer cells protect against virus infection and tumors. Although initially recognized as a part of the innate immunity, several recent studies have revealed NK cells exhibit immune memory to pathogens and haptens. NK cell memory has also been observed after exposure to combination of cytokines (IL12, IL15, IL18). The cytokine induced memory like NK cells exhibited potent antitumor immunity. To understand the role of cMyc in effector function of cytokine induced memory like NK cells, the effects of cMyc chemical inhibitor and Myc gene deletion by Crispr/Cas9 were studied. We found that treatment with cMyc inhibitor (cMYCi975) reduced NK …

Phosphorylation is a necessary posttranslational modification that regulates protein function and directs cell signaling outcomes. Current methods to measure protein phosphorylation cannot preserve the heterogeneity in phosphorylation across individual proteins. The single-molecule pull-down (SiMPull) assay was developed to investigate the composition of macromolecular complexes via immunoprecipitation of proteins on a glass coverslip followed by single-molecule imaging. The current technique is an adaptation of SiMPull that provides robust quantification of the phosphorylation state of full-length membrane receptors at the single-molecule level. Imaging thousands of individual receptors in this way allows for quantifying protein phosphorylation patterns. The present protocol details the optimized …

Dropout In Couple Therapy: An Exploration Of The Trajectories Of Couples Dropping Out, Ragan A. Lybbert
Theses and Dissertations
Dropout is a problematic phenomenon which wastes community, clinician, client, and researcher resources. Clients who dropout from therapy end up the same, or worse than, those who did not seek out therapy at all. While there is a relatively deep and broad understanding of dropout from individual therapy, an exhaustive review of couple therapy dropout literature reveals a very inconsistent and non-conclusive body of research. This may stem from a lack of a consistently used theory to guide research endeavors in this important realm. Primarily, this seems to stem from treating dropout as a static event rather than a process …

Current methods for nautical charts generalization are strongly human interactive and time-consuming. Significant amounts of effort are needed for generalizing, compiling, updating, maintaining, and consistency checking those products. The ideal situation would be a fully automated solution for generating products on demand, at the right scale, at the point of use, and directly from the seamless database, that respect all application specific constraints (i.e., Safety, Legibility, Topology, and Morphology). Such a solution would solve many related problems, minimize the time and effort needed for ENC production and support rapid update. However, regardless of the advancements in technology and the various …

Unlike land routing, sea navigation takes place in "free-space", not constrained to strict road networks. To ensure safety of passage, mariners tend to use commonly traveled routes. Nautical and routing charts provide information regarding dangers to navigation and shipping routes and distances between major ports, however they are often outdated or not complete, while the routes can only be considered as recommendations. When ships are to stray from previously followed and recommended routes, there lies a higher risk of grounding, and in areas of high traffic, an increased risk of collision, potentially causing disruption of goods and services, loss of …

Notes In Improvisation : Spatializing Black Identity Through Music, Esther Akintoye
Masters Theses
The self-creation of Black spaces in America has been a form of resistance and reclamation, as well as a way to forge an identity and make room for community. This thesis argues for a use of improvisational African American music as a tool to create space. Additionally, through research and a design intervention, this thesis seeks to demonstrate how spatial creation within the framework of music and musical improvisation work as ways to expand, solidify and celebrate identity within Black and African- identifying people in America.
Fluid and improvisational techniques found in Black musical styles and genres such as jazz …

Lester J. Smith v. Timothy Ward
On Petition for Writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit
From the Summary of Argument
Lester Smith comes to this Court in unusual circumstances: the district court found that the Georgia Department of Corrections offered no rationale that could justify its prohibition on beards longer than half an inch under RLUIPA, and yet— without disputing that finding—the Eleventh Circuit ruled that the State may still enforce the half-inch limitation against Smith. The Eleventh Circuit’s denial of any relief from what has been shown to be …

Combinatorial silencing of more than one protein via small interfering RNA (siRNA) is a new strategy that can enhance the effect of RNA interference on cell function. To explore this strategy, we selected JAK/STAT axis as a major signaling pathway that contributes to several mechanisms involved in cancer cell proliferation and survival. We focused on four proteins involved in this pathway to explore the possibility of identifying a combinatorial targeting strategy (as the proof of concept) with enhanced efficiency: gp 130 (a co-receptor for IL6 cytokines), JAK2, STAT3, and importin α3 (the nuclear transporter reportedly involved in translocation of activated …

The Future Of Camera Technology With Atul Ingle, Atul Ingle
PDXPLORES Podcast
Single-photon camera sensors have the potential to revolutionize digital camera technology. These sensors can capture individual photons at high speeds, circumventing some of the limitations of current digital camera technologies. One challenge, however, is the sheer amount of data generated by the sensor, which is a hindrance to their widespread adoption. With the support of the National Science Foundation, Assistant Professor Atul Ingle is developing algorithms to solve this problem--algorithms that could enable the adoption of single-photon sensors in applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to medical imaging and the cameras in cellphones.

PCOM Scholarly Works
Elasmobranchii are relatively well-studied. However, numerous phylogenetic uncertainties about their relationships remain. Here, we revisit the phylogenetic evidence based on a detailed morphological re-evaluation of all the major extant batomorph clades (skates and rays), including several holomorphic fossil taxa from the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic, and an extensive outgroup sampling, which includes sharks, chimaeras and several other fossil chondrichthyans. The parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses found more resolved but contrasting topologies, with the Bayesian inference tree neither supporting nor disfavouring any of them. Overall, the analyses result in similar clade compositions and topologies, with the Jurassic batomorphs forming the sister clade …
