Material Development Toward An Index-Matched Gadolinium-Based Heterogenous Capture-Gated Neutron Detector, Aaron J. Thorum
Material Development Toward An Index-Matched Gadolinium-Based Heterogenous Capture-Gated Neutron Detector, Aaron J. Thorum
Theses and Dissertations
Neutron detection is important in several fields, especially detection of illicit nuclear material. Historically, 3He has been the basis for these technologies. Modern realities have necessitated the development of new technologies and the exploration of new materials to meet this need. One potential solution is known as capture-gating, which is a measurement approach that is good at differentiating between incident neutrons and gamma rays. The key issue is that materials used in current capture-gating devices can suffer from poor optical performance. This is due to the fact that the these detectors, whether composed of a heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture of …
A Quantitative Model Of Volume Compensation As A Mechanism For Oscillatory Flow Of Cerebrospinal Fluid, Charles F. Babbs
A Quantitative Model Of Volume Compensation As A Mechanism For Oscillatory Flow Of Cerebrospinal Fluid, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
Specifying the exact mechanism driving cyclic, oscillatory flows of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through the cerebral ventricles and subarachnoid spaces remains an open problem. Here is a new quantitative hypothesis describing how cyclic expansion and contraction of the cerebral blood volume moves CSF within the closed box of the cranium. As whole brain tissue expands with added blood, volume compensation is provided by partial collapse of the superior sagittal and transverse venous sinuses. The magnitude of the expansion and contraction of whole brain tissue volume can be estimated from the changes in intravascular volume, which in turn can be divided into …
Simulation Of Mechanical Behavior Of Collagen Fibers, Panwei Yuan
Simulation Of Mechanical Behavior Of Collagen Fibers, Panwei Yuan
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Attachment of dissimilar materials can result in high levels of localized stress at their interfaces, which can predispose a structure to failure. The stress concentrations at such interfaces are well characterized for linear elasticity. However, extending this understanding to nonlinear materials is not straightforward. In biological materials, local stiffness may increase in response to elevated stress, and in metals, local stiffness may decrease; however, the effect of this is not well characterized for free edge singularities. The main goal of this research was therefore to construct a mechanical model to describe stress concentrations that arise at tendon-to-bone interfaces, and to …

Over the past few decades, various academic fields have reported contradictory findings regarding whether income is positively or negatively associated with subjective well-being (SWB). To reconcile the inconclusive observations, researchers tend to use various mediators and moderators that could explain why income is more strongly associated with SWB for certain groups of people and why income could be negatively associated with SWB for other groups. This study endeavored to first test additional mediation roles of financial satisfaction and a sense of control in the link between income and three related yet distinct measures of SWB: life satisfaction, happiness, and emotional …

Chronic multisymptom illness (CMI) affects a subsection of elderly and war Veterans and is associated with systemic inflammation. Here, using a mouse model of CMI and a group of Gulf War (GW) Veterans’ with CMI we show the presence of an altered host resistome. Results show that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are significantly altered in the CMI group in both mice and GW Veterans when compared to control. Fecal samples from GW Veterans with persistent CMI show a significant increase of resistance to a wide class of antibiotics and exhibited an array of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) distinct from normal …
The Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland (Rno-G): Status Update, Steffen Hallmann
The Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland (Rno-G): Status Update, Steffen Hallmann
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
The Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is an in-ice radio detector for ultrahigh energy neutrinos with the potential to make the first detection of a neutrino shower beyond ∼10 PeV via the Askaryan emission. With a projected 90% CL upper limit below 𝐸2Φ ≈ 10−8 GeV/cm2/s/sr within 10 years of operation, RNO-G will reach realistic models of GZK and astrophysical neutrino fluxes. In 2021, the first three stations of RNO-G were installed and started data-taking. Four additional stations were added in 2022 with some upgrades to the station hardware. Here, we present the current …

Angular Resolution For The Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland (Rno-G), Ilse Plaisier
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
In the ultra-high energy regime, the low predicted neutrino fluxes are out of reach for currently running neutrino detectors. Larger instrumented volumes are needed to probe these lowfluxes. The Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland (RNO-G) detects in-ice radio waves emitted by neutrino induced particle showers in the Greenlandic ice sheet. Radio waves have a large attenuation length in ice O(1 km) and therefore RNO-G implements a sparse instrumentation to cover an unprecedented volume. The first seven RNO-G stations have been deployed in the summer of 2021 and 2022 and deployment will be ongoing in the next years. This contribution discusses …

Knee Pain From Osteoarthritis: Pathogenesis, Risk Factors, And Recent Evidence On Physical Therapy Interventions, Jean-Philippe Berteau
Publications and Research
For patients presenting knee pain coming from osteoarthritis (OA), non-pharmacological conservative treatments (e.g., physical therapy interventions) are among the first methods in orthopedics and rehabilitation to prevent OA progression and avoid knee surgery. However, the best strategy for each patient is difficult to establish, because knee OA’s exact causes of progression are not entirely understood. This narrative review presents (i) the most recent update on the pathogenesis of knee OA with the risk factors for developing OA and (ii) the most recent evidence for reducing knee pain with physical therapy intervention such as Diathermy, Exercise therapy, Ultrasounds, Knee Brace, and …

Axial Hypersensitivity Is Associated With Aberrant Nerve Sprouting In A Novel Model Of Disc Degeneration In Female Sprague Dawley Rats, David J. Lillyman, Fei San Lee, Evie C. Barnett, Tyler J. Miller, Moreno Lozano Alvaro, Henry C. Drvol, Rebecca A. Wachs
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Chronic low back pain is a global socioeconomic crisis and treatments are lacking in part due to inadequate models. Etiological research suggests that the predominant pathology associated with chronic low back pain is intervertebral disc degeneration. Various research teams have created rat models of disc degeneration, but the clinical translatability of these models has been limited by an absence of robust chronic painlike behavior. To address this deficit, disc degeneration was induced via an artificial annular tear in female Sprague Dawley rats. The subsequent degeneration, which was allowed to progress for 18-weeks, caused a drastic reduction in disc volume. Furthermore, …

With the politics of borders, the socio-economic divide between the United States and Mexico is evident. The geographic proximity to the U.S. makes the Mexico–Guatemala border an extension of the U.S. border enforcement regime. This article argues that the politics surrounding the U.S.–Guatemala border have not necessarily changed, because, at the core, the main objective of these border governance practices is to stop the movement of undesirable bodies (Khosravi 2011). Further, the article argues that the practices of containment force migrants to resist through their movement and seek strategies of survival. By comparing the administrations of Peña Nieto and López …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Increasing severity of extreme heat is a hallmark of climate change. Its impacts depend on temperature but also on moisture and solar radiation, each with distinct spatial patterns and vertical profiles. Here, we consider these variables' combined effect on extreme heat stress, as measured by the environmental stress index, using a suite of high-resolution climate simulations for historical (1980–2005) and future (2074–2099, Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5)) periods. We find that observed extreme heat stress drops off nearly linearly with elevation above a coastal zone, at a rate that is larger in more humid regions. Future projections indicate dramatic relative …

Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between self-regulated learning skills and smartphone usage in relation to studying. It is unclear whether poor learning habits related to smartphone usage are unique traits or a reflection of existing self-regulated learning skills. The self-regulatory skills (a) regulation, (b) knowledge, and (c) management of cognition were measured and compared to the smartphone practices (a) multitasking, (b) avoiding distractions, and (c) mindful use. First-year undergraduates (n = 227) completed an online survey of self-regulatory skills and common phone practices. The results support the predictions that self-regulatory skills are negatively correlated with …

Quietly Encouraging Saudi Arabia’S Transient Economy, Austin H. Hardman
Quietly Encouraging Saudi Arabia’S Transient Economy, Austin H. Hardman
Pepperdine Policy Review
The Saudi government has made tremendous progress in liberalizing its economy. The Saudi legal system is more business friendly now than ever and many of the legislative changes have occurred in just the past 5 years. Economic obstacles preventing Americans from further investing in Saudi Arabia’s private sector have largely been resolved in theory. This is good news for U.S. policy makers. Economic modernization is believed to bring regional and domestic stability. However, Saudi Arabia has been trending towards becoming a more authoritarian regime. The Saudi Royal authority has supplanted powers allocated for religious authority in the name of economic …
Online Education For Nurses To Implement Active Listening Akills When Caring For Patients With A Spinal Cord Injury: A Quality Improvement Project, Ashley Radtke
DNP and Student Works
Displaying empathy through active listening skills is critical in preventing worsening depression in individuals who have experienced a Spinal Cord Injury. Approximately 11 to 37% of patients with an SCI may develop depression due to their injury (United Spinal Association, 2021). Additionally, those who have an SCI and have a prior history of depression are at an increased risk of developing moderate to severe depression. Depression in patients with an SCI may also present clinically as grief, resulting in multiple healthcare complications (Bombardier et al., 2016). Untreated, prolonged grief can result in more emergency room visits, increased length of stay …

Improving Medication Adherence In Psychiatric Patients With A Medication Adherence Program, Whitney Peterson
DNP and Student Works
Introduction: Medication non-adherence significantly impacts patients with serious mental illness (SMI). It's estimated that over 50% of patients prescribed antipsychotic medication are non-adherent to the prescribed treatment. Medication non-adherence impedes the patient's safety, leads to relapse, and the need for rehospitalization.
Research Methodology: Literature was examined from the past five years (2016-2021) on the use of telephonic follow-up interventions to improve medication adherence in patients with psychiatric disorders and other chronic diseases at risk for mental illness. Databases (PubMed, CINAHL, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library) were used. The inclusion criteria focused on psychiatric disorders, telephone calls to improve medication adherence, …

Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
Pseudocode is a traditional teaching tactic in computer science, yet it is not standardized and programming language dependent. Thus, it can be quite time consuming to write it. With the advancement of AI methodologies in NLP, AI could help address this problem. This work investigates the quality of AI generated pseudocode from source code. Five studies are conducted in this work to measure pseudocode quality, where each study modifies model input to observe accuracy and generalizability. The results show that there is an association between pseudocode quality and training and test set similarity. Furthermore, a sizable and diverse training set …

This study introduces a universal correlation based on the modified version of the Arrhenius equation to estimate the solubility of anti-cancer drugs in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). A combination of an Arrhenius-shape term and a departure function was proposed to estimate the solubility of anti-cancer drugs in supercritical CO2. This modified Arrhenius correlation predicts the solubility of anti-cancer drugs in supercritical CO2 from pressure, temperature, and carbon dioxide density. The pre-exponential of the Arrhenius linearly relates to the temperature and carbon dioxide density, and its exponential term is an inverse function of pressure. Moreover, the departure function linearly correlates with …

Simple Summary
Here we characterize the phenotypic and molecular effects of MALINC1, a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that we found significantly upregulated in premalignant ductal carcinoma in-situ lesions. We provide evidence that MALINC1 behaves as an oncogenic and immune-related lncRNA involved with early-stage breast cancer progression, showing prognostic and predictive value to immunotherapy in invasive breast carcinomas.
Abstract
