Library-Based Data Curation, Management And Interdisciplinary Research At Florida International University: Reciprocal Use Of Data Through Collaboration, Zhaohui J. Fu, Levente Juhasz, Jill Krefft, Diana Ter-Ghazaryan, Boyuan Guan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper shows the Florida International University (FIU) Libraries' efforts in research data management, implementation, and practice. The FIU Library-based data team has led research projects that are directly built upon institutional and other data repositories, data hubs, and data visualization tools, through collaboration with the user community. We will present the technology setup and configuration of such a data framework, which includes Dataverse, ESRI’s ArcGIS Data Hub, and other data collection and visualization tools. We will also discuss the fiscal and organizational structure needed to support research data management initiatives. Using a couple of our applied research projects, we …

Weaving Open Dialogue Using Canada’S Open Science Roadmap Framework, Heather Cunningham, Christina S.Y. Kim Jun 2022

Weaving Open Dialogue Using Canada’S Open Science Roadmap Framework, Heather Cunningham, Christina S.Y. Kim

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Open science (OS) as a movement has transformative potential in making the process of scientific research transparent and collaborative as well as the outputs freely accessible to all in society. However, these opportunities and challenges are subject to biases and entrenched in power disparities. In addition, the very broad nature of open science also invokes challenges in having meaningful discussions. In 2020, the Government of Canada unveiled a national framework, Roadmap to Open Science, which provided overarching principles and recommendations to allow federal science to be open to all. The University of Toronto (U of T) used this national open …

Towards A New Era Of Journal Publishing: The Coalition Of Diamond, Reiner Kallenborn, Tamara Froehler Jun 2022

Towards A New Era Of Journal Publishing: The Coalition Of Diamond, Reiner Kallenborn, Tamara Froehler

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Since the early 1990s, the term Open Access has been synonymous with the principle of publishing the scientific results of taxpayer-funded research at low cost and making them available to the public free of charge. In response to increasing academic demand for at least some degree of unrestricted access to research results, this idea of Open Access has been taken up by commercial publishers and harshly altered to accommodate finance models that allow global access to scien-tific and scholarly articles on payment of a publication fee.

This has exacerbated the financial burden on universities with a strong publishing portfolio while …

Impairment Recognition And Revaluation– China Publicly Listed Companies, Ying Wang Jun 2022

Impairment Recognition And Revaluation– China Publicly Listed Companies, Ying Wang

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The advent of SFAS 142 and IAS 36 regarding handling of asset impairment has spawned research into how these standards influence whether an impairment loss is recorded. Deferred tax items in China have three major components: temporary tax and financial reporting differences in depreciation; impairment losses; and previous losses, which can be carried forward for five years for tax purposes. While the temporary differences in depreciation typically defer taxes and create deferred tax liabilities, impairment losses and previous losses create deferred tax assets because they are not deductible in the current period for tax purposes. A deferred tax asset is …

Do Students Agree With Research-Based Outcomes For The Business Communication Course? An Exploratory Study, Lori Boyer, Alan Boyer, Jamie Pleasant Jun 2022

Do Students Agree With Research-Based Outcomes For The Business Communication Course? An Exploratory Study, Lori Boyer, Alan Boyer, Jamie Pleasant

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The Business Communication class has been the center of soft skills development in most schools of business. The outcomes of the class generally are chosen by faculty and professionals to enhance students’ opportunities to be successful in the workplace. As students become more involved in the content of their education, the question should be asked if they agree with faculty, professionals and even the literature about the course outcomes. This study was designed to answer that question. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Business Communication class completed a survey that asked their opinions about the outcomes of the class. Results …

Cohesive Top Management: The Role Of Diversity And Human, Drake Mullens

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Objective: In the context of family firms, this research endeavors to establish human capital as an antecedent of top management team transactive memory systems and examine the deleterious effects of non-family managers on that team. Additionally, the interaction of non-family managers and human capital on the top management team transactive memory system is considered. Methodology: Primary data were collected from 151 executives at Automobile and Motorcycle dealers. Linear regression analysis was utilized to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings: Human capital is an important antecedent to the development of transactive memory systems in family firms. Non-family managers’ participation in the top …

The Art Of Anthropology At A College In Crisis: Exploring Some Effects Of Neoliberalism On Higher Education, Vincent H. Melomo Jun 2022

The Art Of Anthropology At A College In Crisis: Exploring Some Effects Of Neoliberalism On Higher Education, Vincent H. Melomo

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

This chapter addresses the increasing pervasiveness of neoliberal ideologies in our culture and focuses on the implications of these ideologies for the future of anthropology in higher education. More specifically, the chapter considers how these ideologies pose a particular challenge to anthropology’s more humanistic dimensions, which include both the art of anthropology and an anthropology of art. Throughout the chapter, the author tells the story of how reductions were made recently to the anthropology program at his institution in response to converging economic crises. He analyzes the context of these changes and the process by which they were made in …

The Art Of Teaching Anthropology: Examples From Biological Anthropology, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Laura D. Lund, Marilyn R. London Jun 2022

The Art Of Teaching Anthropology: Examples From Biological Anthropology, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Laura D. Lund, Marilyn R. London

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

Teaching in a college or university setting has many challenges, including often-inadequate preparation in graduate school and the requirement to develop new courses, often in a short period of time. Anthropology faculty are at a particular disadvantage because anthropology lacks any discipline-specific journals for the publication of articles on the scholarship of teaching and learning. Many anthropology faculty desire to have more resources available for course and assignment development. In this chapter, we present several examples of course syllabi, class activities, and a sample student paper that faculty can use as they develop or revise anthropology courses.

Arts Integration As Critical Pedagogy, Elizabeth A. Sheehan Jun 2022

Arts Integration As Critical Pedagogy, Elizabeth A. Sheehan

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

This chapter discusses arts integration in K-12 education as a form of critical pedagogy, a way to create a “curriculum within the curriculum” that meets the demands of standardized testing while encouraging students to make meaningful connections to the material they are taught. Arts integration allows teachers to use a wide range of art forms to teach core subjects, including those emphasized by statewide standardized tests. Focusing on an arts integration project for fourth graders at a Title I elementary school in Richmond, Virginia, the chapter describes how the study of African American history in the former capital of the …

Race And Rhythm In Rock And Roll, Hector Qirko Jun 2022

Race And Rhythm In Rock And Roll, Hector Qirko

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

This chapter argues that contrary to conventional wisdom and the views of many scholars and critics, rock and roll’s most important rhythmic elements are derived from a complex blend of African, American, and European musical traditions. There is therefore no objective support for racialized characterizations of the “beat” that often serve, however unintentionally, to perpetuate stereotypes in discussions of both the genre and American popular music more broadly.
