Experimentation And Modeling Of Laser Radiation Scattering Through Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers, Steven P. Shepard
Experimentation And Modeling Of Laser Radiation Scattering Through Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers, Steven P. Shepard
Engineering Ph.D. Theses
With the prevalence of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) in aerospace platforms, there is a need to better understand radiative heat transport through the material. A laboratory experiment was constructed and a computational zonal Monte Carlo (ZMC) model developed to quantify and understand the laser scattering properties of CFRPs. The ZMC model builds off of the zonal method (ZM)—developed by Hottel et al. and expanded by researchers such as Yuen et al.—by incorporating Monte Carlo techniques into the ZM. The ZMC method is superior in efficiency to the ZM and alternative ray tracing methods, which enables larger mediums of exchange …

Anatomy Of Green Specialisation: Evidence From Eu Production Data, 1995-2015, Francesco Vona, Francesco Bontadini
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We study green specialisation across EU countries and detailed 4-digit industrial sectors over the period of 1995-2015 by harmonizing product-level data (PRODCOM). We propose a new list of green goods that refines lists proposed by international organizations by excluding goods with double usage. Our analysis reveals important structural characteristics of green specialisation in the manufacturing sector. First, green production is highly concentrated, with 13 out of 119 4-digit industries, which are high-tech and account for nearly 95% of the total. Second, green and polluting productions do not occur in the same sectors, and countries specialise in either green or brown …

My father was a Black Texan. My mother was a Black Arkansan. When they migrated to California, they brought with them traditions passed down through ancestors from West Africa and the Congo. My parents understood the powerful symbol the color red expressed on the table: a reminder of the sacrifices endured.
This is my Juneteenth.
This month, the nation will join in celebrating Juneteenth, a federal holiday that acknowledges when enslaved Black people in Texas were finally freed on June 19, 1865 — more than two years after President …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Extremely preterm (EPT) birth has been related to dysregulation of stress responses and behavioral/learning problems at school age. Early adverse experiences can blunt HPA axis reactivity. We hypothesized that an attenuated cortisol awakening response would be associated with developmental and behavioral problems at school age in EPT children.
METHODS: This secondary analysis of a sub-cohort of the SUPPORT study included children born between 24 and 27 weeks, evaluated at 6-7 years with a neurodevelopmental battery and cortisol measures. Differences were tested between EPT and a term-born group. Relationships of cortisol awakening response to test scores were analyzed.
RESULTS: Cortisol …

Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The COVID-19 pandemic alerted the U.S. populace to spatial patterns of health outcomes. Trusted sources of information such as the Johns Hopkins University and The New York Times mapped COVID-19 indicators at the county-level, bringing widespread attention to the timing and clustering of case rates, mortality, and vaccine uptake. The severity of the pandemic has motivated the research community to share data and conduct analyses to illuminate and project trends that would be useful for healthcare providers and policy makers in their communities. This special issue of the Journal of Rural Social Sciences explores the roles space and place have …

Exposing a male rat to an obesogenic high-fat diet (HFD) influences attractiveness to potential female mates, the subsequent interaction of female mates with infant offspring, and the development of stress-related behavioral and neural responses in offspring. To examine the stomach and fecal microbiome's potential roles, fecal samples from 44 offspring and stomach samples from offspring and their fathers were collected and bacterial community composition was studied by 16 small subunit ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequencing. Paternal diet (control, high-fat), maternal housing conditions (standard or semi-naturalistic housing), and maternal care (quality of nursing and other maternal behaviors) affected the within-subjects …

Erythrocytes are primarily comprised of the oxygen carrying protein hemoglobin. Genetic mutations causing defects in the proper synthesis of hemoglobin result in various anemias. It is during the last phases of terminal erythroid differentiation that hemoglobin levels rise, making it a focus for therapeutic research. Fetal hemoglobin is comprised of ⍺-globin and gamma globin, then after a change in gene expression called hemoglobin switching which takes place after birth, adult hemoglobin is comprised of ⍺-globin and beta globin. We investigated hemoglobin switching and erythroid terminal differentiation by focusing on the master erythroid transcription factor Erythroid Krüppel-like Factor (EKLF). Data led …

Exploring The Metabolic Landscape Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cells Using Genome-Scale Metabolic Modeling, Mohammad Mazharul Islam, Andrea Goertzen, Pankaj K. Singh, Rajib Saha
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a major research focus because of its poor therapy response and dismal prognosis. PDAC cells adapt their metabolism to the surrounding environment, often relying on diverse nutrient sources. Because traditional experimental techniques appear exhaustive to find a viable therapeutic strategy, a highly curated and omics-informed PDAC genome-scale metabolic model was reconstructed using patient-specific transcriptomics data. From the model-predictions, several new metabolic functions were explored as potential therapeutic targets in addition to the known metabolic hallmarks of PDAC. Significant downregulation in the peroxisomal beta oxidation pathway, flux modulation in the carnitine shuttle system, and upregulation in …
A Generalization Of Combinatorial Identities For Stable Discrete Series Constants, Richard Ehrenborg, Sophie Moreland, Margaret Readdy
A Generalization Of Combinatorial Identities For Stable Discrete Series Constants, Richard Ehrenborg, Sophie Moreland, Margaret Readdy
Mathematics Faculty Publications
This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra’s character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra’s work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later, Goresky–Kottwitz–MacPherson (1997) and Herb (2000) gave different formulas for these constants. In this article, we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two …

We recently reported sex differences in mesenteric arterial function of the UC Davis type-2 diabetes mellitus (UCD-T2DM) rats as early as the prediabetic state. We reported that mesenteric arteries (MA) from prediabetic male rats exhibited a greater impairment compared to that in prediabetic females. However, when females became diabetic, they exhibited a greater vascular dysfunction than males. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the female sex hormone, estrogen preserves mesenteric arterial vasorelaxation in UCD-T2DM female rats at an early prediabetic state. Age-matched female Sprague Dawley and prediabetic (PD) UCD-T2DM rats were ovariectomized (OVX) and subcutaneously implanted …

A Regulatory Linkage Between Scytonemin Production And Hormogonia Differentiation In Nostoc Punctiforme, Kevin Klicki, Daniela Ferreira, Douglas Risser, Ferran Garcia-Pichel
Pacific Faculty Work
Bacteria sometimes hedge their survival bets by concurrently activating response circuits leading to different phenotypes in isogenic populations. We show that the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme responds to UV-A by concurrently producing the sunscreen scytonemin and differentiating into motile hormogonia but segregating the responses at the filament level. Mutational studies show that a four-gene partner-switching regulatory system (hcyA-D) orchestrates the cross-talk between the respective regulatory circuitries. Transcription of hormogonium genes and hcyA-D is upregulated by UVA through the scytonemin two-component regulator (scyTCR), hcyA-D being directly involved in signal transduction into the hormogonium response and its modulation by visible light. The sigma …

The Machine Upstairs, Jacob Friedfeld
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Immersive simulation design, broadly speaking, is a game design philosophy centered around player expression, emergent gameplay, and dynamic narrative. Contrary to what the phrase may imply simply by reading it, immersion in and of itself is not necessarily enough for a game to be classified as an “immersive sim” (or IMSIM for short). Many different types of games can utilize immersion to great effect, but immersive simulations require a level of flexibility and rule/system-based approaches beyond the scope of games that occupy similar genres.
The Machine Upstairs represents an exploration of the immersive simulation philosophy and an investigation into its …
An Analysis Of Groundwater Storage Loss In The Central Valley Using A Novel In Situ Method Compared To Grace-Derived Results, Michael David Stevens
An Analysis Of Groundwater Storage Loss In The Central Valley Using A Novel In Situ Method Compared To Grace-Derived Results, Michael David Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
Robust groundwater management is necessary to maintain long-term aquifer sustainability. Temporally and spatially inconsistent in situ data prevents robust groundwater resource evaluation. Data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission has been used to evaluate long-term, large-scale groundwater trends. However, the spatial resolution of GRACE data presents challenges for groundwater management in medium-sized aquifers like the Central Valley of California (CV). Other researchers have utilized GRACEderived data to evaluate groundwater storage in the CV, but they often make corrections due to what is referred to as the "leakage effect." We demonstrate a method for imputing gaps in …

Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Sensory Processing, And Related Correlates In Autistic Children During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mollie Bradley
Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic increased uncertainty and anxiety for most and was especially disruptive to autistic people and their families. Autistic children were particularly vulnerable due to their intolerance for increased uncertainty and disruption to their school and therapy support. This study aimed to investigate the effect that increased uncertainty had on autistic children, specifically their sensory behaviors and stress levels and on the stress levels of their primary caregivers. Parents and guardians of 47 autistic children completed an online survey consisting of questions investigating background and demographic information, their experiences during the first six months of the pandemic, information about …
Literacy Identity And Motherhood: Implications Of Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, Chelsea J. Ames
Literacy Identity And Motherhood: Implications Of Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, Chelsea J. Ames
Theses and Dissertations
This multiple case study shows how motherhood works with and against two women's literacy identities, as interpreted through the theoretical lens of Herman's Dialogical Self Theory. The evidence of this is shown in the tension between their roles as mothers and their personal roles as readers and writers. In many ways, taking on a reader or writer role meant to deny other roles for these women, showing the clash between efforts to consolidate multiple I-positions. While their meta-positions helped them recognize the discrepancies in their I-positions, there was little evidence of mediating third positions to negotiate their roles. This descriptive …

"Newstead And I Stand Or Fall Together": Memorial Ecology And Multispecies Agency In Byron's Early Poetry, Taylore Ann Wintch
Theses and Dissertations
Scholars studying memory, literary tourism, and Byron all note the cooperation between author and audience at work in memorials--be it in terms of speech and response, hospitality and reception, or memory and forgetting. None, however, address the environment at Newstead as an agentic being involved with Byron's memorial legacy. Byron acknowledged multispecies beings as important actors in his eventual legacy. Through some of his early poems, we see the land under and around Newstead Abbey, as well as its nonhuman life, exercising agency and affecting Byron's memory. I limit my analysis to Byron's early poetry partly to trace how a …
A Comparative Study On The Expository Writing Abilities Of Kindergarten Students With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Kristine Michelle Dayley Andrus
A Comparative Study On The Expository Writing Abilities Of Kindergarten Students With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Kristine Michelle Dayley Andrus
Theses and Dissertations
State standards require kindergarten students to produce expository writing, but little research has been done regarding their abilities in this area. This study describes expository writing samples of 47 typically developing (TD) kindergarteners and 43 kindergarteners with developmental language disorder (DLD). The Expository Language Measures (ELM) Flow Chart and the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) software were used to detail the language complexity and text structure features the children in the sample produced. When comparing TD and DLD children's expository written samples, no significant differences in the language and text structure measures were found. It is important to continue …
Investigation Of Material, Process, And Environmental Factors In Bubble Defect Formation For Labels Of Bottled Essential Oils, Joseph Lloyd Andrus
Investigation Of Material, Process, And Environmental Factors In Bubble Defect Formation For Labels Of Bottled Essential Oils, Joseph Lloyd Andrus
Theses and Dissertations
Labeling of consumer products is not only required by regulatory bodies for product identification, but it also serves as a symbol of product quality and prestige. Bubbles under the label are unsightly and impact customer satisfaction. Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) labels currently make up more than eighty percent of all labels in the market today, yet little research could be found addressing causes of bubbling in an industrial setting. A root cause analysis for bubble development included four aspects: label application, environmental conditions of shipping and storage, defects in glass bottle geometry, and oil contamination. The most significant findings from …

Channelopathy Of Small- And Intermediate-Conductance Ca2+-Activated K+ Channels, Young-Woo Nam, Myles Downey, Mohammad Asikur Rahman, Meng Cui, Miao Zhang
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Small- and intermediate-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (KCa2.x/KCa3.1 also called SK/IK) channels are gated exclusively by intracellular Ca2+. The Ca2+ binding protein calmodulin confers sub-micromolar Ca2+ sensitivity to the channel-calmodulin complex. The calmodulin C-lobe is constitutively associated with the proximal C-terminus of the channel. Interactions between calmodulin N-lobe and the channel S4-S5 linker are Ca2+-dependent, which subsequently trigger conformational changes in the channel pore and open the gate. KCNN genes encode four subtypes, including KCNN1 for KCa2.1 (SK1), KCNN2 for KCa2.2 (SK2), KCNN3 for K …

Evaluating The Biogeochemical Effects Of Enhanced Rock Weathering At Lawrence University, Katie Mahorney
Evaluating The Biogeochemical Effects Of Enhanced Rock Weathering At Lawrence University, Katie Mahorney
Lawrence University Honors Projects
On geologic timescales, the weathering of silicate rocks is among the most powerful negative feedbacks controlling atmospheric CO2. However, this process is too slow to meaningfully impact our current climate crisis. Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is one of the most promising carbon capture strategies to remove anthropogenic carbon from the atmosphere. Models suggest that by crushing silicate rocks such as basalt to increase surface area, the process of rock weathering can be accelerated to sequester enough carbon to be significant on human timescales. At Lawrence University, ERW is being investigated to (1) field test the efficacy of the …
Recovery Of Trembling Aspen, Tamarack, And White Spruce Seedlings From Nacl Stress Following Winter Dormancy: Implications For Increased Foliar Potassium, Necrosis, And Sodium Management As Stress Resistance Mechanisms, Nathan T. Lauer
Aspen Bibliography
Revegetation of boreal forest lands disturbed by surface mining for bitumen can be challenging due to fluctuating levels of soil NaCl and harsh winter temperatures. These stressors may hinder the growth and survival of planted tree seedlings. Two experiments were carried out to examine the processes of recovery from NaCl stress and overwintering in trembling aspen, tamarack, and white spruce seedlings. In the recovery experiment, seedlings were treated with 0, 50, or 100 mM NaCl for 60 days and then allowed to recover for 60 days. Most of the examined physiological variables (total dry weight, chlorophyll concentration, photosynthesis, and transpiration) …
