Decomposing Research Problems In Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Guoliang Yang, Jiaofeng Pan
Decomposing Research Problems In Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Guoliang Yang, Jiaofeng Pan
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
How to correctly analyze and decompose the research problems considering the complexity of think tank research problems, especially the major needs of the country, is of great significance for proposing scientific and effective problem solutions. One of the key issues in the Think Tank Double Helix Methodology the need to analyze research problems from the process of "analysis-convergence-reduction". That is to decompose them into a series of sub-problems, and to combine various types of knowledge to investigate the sub-problems, and to conduct a comprehensive restitution of the research problem to propose a satisfactory solution to the original problem finally. In …

Theoretical Thinking On Practical Application Of Double Helix Methodology In Think Tank Research, Bin Yang, Biao Shi
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Double Helix Methodology regards think tank research as a relatively independent and special research topic, from the analysis, fusion, and restoration process of think tank research, based on the process fusion method of DIIS and the logical hierarchy method of MIPS iterating with each other, analyzing the spiral coupling relationship between them, and forming a complete and systematic theoretical framework and methodological system from the characteristics of time and space. This methodology comes from the founder's long-term strategic and policy research practice, and is also effectively applied to many national major research projects, national high-end think tank projects and …

Index Of S&T Innovation And Development For Qinchuangyuan Based On Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Weilan Suo, Kun Guo, Xiaolei Sun, Qiang Ji
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Index research on the science and technology (S&T) innovation and development is a typical think tank research that originates from practice, is used for practice, and is higher than practice. However, existing research has several problems, such as insufficient theory and single perspective. This is not conducive to ensure the scientificity of research process and the accuracy of research results. Fortunately, the think tank double helix methodology has the typical characteristics of systematic thinking, whole-process guidance, and operational ideas, which provides new ideas for effectively solving the above problems. Thus, based on the think tank double helix methodology, this study …

Evaluation Of Regional Innovation Environment Based On Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Chidong Zhang, Dawei Song, Jiaofeng Pan
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The evaluation of regional innovation environment (RIE) is an important policy tool to strengthen the construction of regional innovation system (RIS). At present, the research is academic rather than decision-making, and lacks the guidance of research methods of think tanks based on the complex social system. Based on the think tank double helix methodology raised by Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASISD), this work carries out a systematic and in-depth study on the evaluation of China's RIE and its index system in the new era on the basis of objective and scientific evaluation of relevant research …

Predicting Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse Lek Occurrence In Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, Jonathan D. Lautenbach, John A. Stephenson, Jeffrey L. Beck
Western North American Naturalist
Many North American populations of lekking grouse have declined across their ranges, and understanding and evaluating population trajectories can assist in better managing these iconic species. Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus) is a subspecies of Sharp-tailed Grouse that has declined across its range in the Intermountain West over the past century. Management of this species primarily focuses on habitat around leks; therefore, knowing where Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse leks occur is key to their conservation. We used a resource selection framework to predict lek occurrence in an area with multiple known leks in Carbon County, Wyoming. We used …

Preliminary Study Of Shape-Memory Alloy Torsional Tubes As Thermal Management Actuators Under Non-Ideal Conditions, Paula Sanjuan Espejo, Samuel Desloover, Devon Hardy, Mark Ricklick, Frederick Calkin, David Foutch
Publications
Shape-memory alloys (SMAs) have been used in many engineering applications because of their shape-memory effect and pseudoelasticity. SMA behavior is well understood under steady and constant temperature and loading conditions, whereas transient and non-ideal conditions effects should be further investigated. In this research, SMA torque tubes are studied for use in thermal management applications as self-regulated actuators responding to a process fluid with changes in temperature, with the goal of improved system efficiency by keeping components at an optimal temperature. When utilized in a thermal management configuration, it is likely that the SMA’s thermal environment will be different than that …
Finance And Endogenous Growth, Delano Segundo Villanueva
Finance And Endogenous Growth, Delano Segundo Villanueva
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
In a two-class growth model of Pasinetti (1962), there is no financial intermediary that mobilizes bank deposits to be lent to the capitalist class for physical investment. The absence of a capital market also precludes workers from buying capitalists’ new issues of stocks and bonds to finance investment. Thus, the equilibrium rate of return to capital is independent of the saving rate of the working class—what Samuelson and Modigliani (1966) referred to as the Pasinetti paradox. In this paper’s modified Pasinetti framework with endogenous growth, the equilibrium rate of return to capital is shown to be a function of all …

Threshold Effect In The Relationship Between Inflation Rate And Economic Growth In Indonesia, Adam Luthfi Kusumatrisna, Iman Sugema, Syamsul H. Pasaribu
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This paper investigated the linear and nonlinear relationships between inflation and economic growth in Indonesia using provincial data from 1994 to 2019. The linear model revealed that inflation has a significant negative effect on economic growth, while the nonlinear model revealed that inflation would negatively affect economic growth only after exceeding a threshold value of 9.59 percent. Excluding a high inflationary structural break, we found an inflation threshold of 5.22 percent. Furthermore, we found that the threshold of inflation rate in the eastern regions of Indonesia was higher than that of the western regions, namely 9.64 percent and 5.75 percent, …
Determining Depth Of Closure Based On Time-Series Beach Profiles And Empirical Formulas: A Case Study Along The Florida Coast, Elizabeth Royer
Determining Depth Of Closure Based On Time-Series Beach Profiles And Empirical Formulas: A Case Study Along The Florida Coast, Elizabeth Royer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Depth of closure (DOC) is defined as the most landward depth seaward of which there is no significant change in bed elevation and no significant net sediment exchange between the nearshore and the offshore over a certain period of time, such as 5 to 20 years. DOC is an essential parameter used in beach and shore protection, sediment management, and many other aspects of coastal studies. Taking advantage of advancements in wave hindcast and bathymetry measurement in the past 20 years (2000-2019), this study determined the DOC at 12 locations along the Florida coast, including three from the northwest Gulf …

Introduction:
Hospitalised older adults are prone to functional deterioration, which is more evident in frail older patients and can be further exacerbated by pain. Two interventions that have the potential to prevent progression of frailty and improve patient outcomes in hospitalised older adults but have yet to be subject to clinical trials are nurse-led volunteer support and technology-driven assessment of pain.
Methods and Analysis:
This single-centre, prospective, non-blinded, cluster randomised controlled trial will compare the efficacy of nurse-led volunteer support, technology-driven pain assessment and the combination of the two interventions to usual care for hospitalised older adults. Prior to commencing …

Bildung Und Schule Im Spannungsfeld Pandemiebedingter Herausforderungen: Eine Thematische Analyse Von Akteur-Struktur-Dynamiken, Christian Herzog, Alessandro Immanuel Beil, Peter Kelly
Plymouth Institute of Education

No Formation During Co-Combustion Of Coal With Two Thermally Treated Biomasses, Thomas Allgurén, Klas Andersson, Andrew R. Fry, Eric G. Eddings
Faculty Publications
The combustion behavior of biomass as a fuel varies dependent on source of the raw material, but also on the type of pre-treatment. In this work steam exploded and torrefied woody biomass were studied with respect to NOx formation in co-firing experiments. Most of the reported data is based on small scale experiments and simulations. In this work, however, have three different cases been investigated experimentally in a 1.5MWth combustor supported by reaction simulations. One case corresponds to firing 100% Utah bituminous coal and two cases where 15% of the coal (on a mass basis) has been replaced with either …

Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow both the frequency and the time derivative of the frequency of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those …

Face Identity Coding In The Deep Neural Network And Primate Brain, Jinge Wang, Runnan Cao, Nicholas J Brandmeir, Xin Li, Shuo Wang
2020-Current year OA Pubs
A central challenge in face perception research is to understand how neurons encode face identities. This challenge has not been met largely due to the lack of simultaneous access to the entire face processing neural network and the lack of a comprehensive multifaceted model capable of characterizing a large number of facial features. Here, we addressed this challenge by conducting in silico experiments using a pre-trained face recognition deep neural network (DNN) with a diverse array of stimuli. We identified a subset of DNN units selective to face identities, and these identity-selective units demonstrated generalized discriminability to novel faces. Visualization …

Introduction: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks occur when fluid seeps through a dural or skull base defect, typically in the nose or ear. CSF leaks commonly are identified and diagnosed by use of computed tomography (CT) and CT cisternogram. CT findings suggestive of a CSF leak include a skull-based bone defect along with opacification of the contiguous sinus. This study examined a series of CSF leaks on CT imaging to document imaging findings.
Methods: A single-institution retrospective review of cases of CSF leak diagnosed by CT maxillofacial or CT cisternogram from January 1, 2008 to March 12, 2018 was performed. Patient …

Dynamic brain activity requires timely communications between the brain parenchyma and circulating blood. Brain-blood communication is facilitated by intricate networks of brain vasculature, which display striking heterogeneity in structure and function. This vascular cell heterogeneity in the brain is fundamental to mediating diverse brain functions and has long been recognized. However, the molecular basis of this biological phenomenon has only recently begun to be elucidated. Over the past century, various animal species and in vitro systems have contributed to the accumulation of our fundamental and phylogenetic knowledge about brain vasculature, collectively advancing this research field. Historically, dye tracer and microscopic …

Anisotropic Third-Harmonic Generation Of Exfoliated As2s3 Thin Flakes, Ravi P.N. Tripathi, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Van der Waals (vdW) materials have recently attracted significant interest in the context of orientation-dependent linear and nonlinear optical properties. Recently, arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) or orpiment is identified as a new vdW layered material having anisotropic vibrational and optomechanical responses due to the reduced in-plane crystal symmetry, but its nonlinear optical response is still not well understood yet. Herein, the anisotropic third-harmonic generation (THG) response of mechanically exfoliated As2S3 thin flakes is reported. The polarization-dependent evolution of THG emission from butterfly-shaped pattern to four-lobe pattern is comprehensively explored. Moreover, the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of As2S3 crystal is extracted by analyzing …

This study investigates the best available methods for remote monitoring inland small-scale waterbodies, using remote sensing data from both Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellites, utilizing a handheld hyperspectral device for ground truthing. Monitoring was conducted to evaluate water quality indicators: chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and turbidity. Ground truthing was performed to select the most suitable atmospheric correction technique (ACT). Several ACT have been tested: dark spectrum fitting (DSF), dark object subtraction (DOS), atmospheric and topographic correction (ATCOR), and exponential extrapolation (EXP). Classical sampling was conducted first; then, the resulting concentrations were compared to those obtained using remote sensing …

High Daily And Year-Round Variability In Denitrification And Nitrogen Fixation In A Northern Temperate River, Kevin Nevorski, Amy M. Marcarelli
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Rates of nitrogen (N) cycling processes like denitrification and dinitrogen (N2) fixation, which together are the primary contributors to N2 flux rates from surface waters, may change at different time scales from seasons to weeks to days. Yet, we know little about the magnitude, mechanisms or drivers of these temporal changes, especially at shorter daily and weekly timescales. Quantifying variation in rates and drivers across temporal scales is essential to understand how nutrient cycling processes operate in aquatic ecosystems and predict how they may respond to shifting seasonal dynamics caused by global change (i.e., earlier snowmelt and extreme weather events). …

Sameness In Algebra: Views Of Isomorphism And Homomorphism, Rachel Rupnow, Peter Sassman
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Isomorphism and homomorphism are topics central to abstract algebra, but research on mathematicians’ views of these topics, especially with respect to sameness, remains limited. This study examines open response survey data from 197 mathematicians on how sameness could be helpful or harmful when studying isomorphism and homomorphism. Using thematic analysis, we examined whether sameness was viewed as helpful or harmful for isomorphism and homomorphism before examining rationales for those views. Making use of values of the mathematical community, we note that mathematicians saw conceptual and pedagogical benefits to connecting isomorphism and sameness, which connects to leveraging intuition and valuing ways …
