Zein And Lignin-Graft-Plga Nanoparticles As Agrochemical Delivery Systems To Soybean Plants, Eban A. Hanna
Zein And Lignin-Graft-Plga Nanoparticles As Agrochemical Delivery Systems To Soybean Plants, Eban A. Hanna
LSU Master's Theses
The majority of applied agrochemicals are lost to the environment due to their poor adhesion to plant tissues, resulting in multiple applications and subsequent environmental toxicity. This thesis focuses on reducing these consequences by entrapping agrochemicals in polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs). In the first section, zein nanoparticles (ZNPs) with entrapped methoxyfenozide (MFZ) (209.0 ± 5.6 nm, -42.1 ± 2.1 mV) were synthesized and used to facilitate the translocation of MFZ to the leaves and stems of soybean plants, as measured by LC-MS, under hydroponic conditions. The agrochemical concentration increased within the leaves over time from 0.04 to 2.35 μg/g at 0.2 …

A Note On Public Debt–Private Investment Nexus In Emerging Economies, Dinci J. Penzin, Afees Salisu, Benedict N. Akanegbu
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
We examine the effect of public debt on private investment in selected emerging economies. Using a panel threshold regression model, we estimate a threshold value of about 3 percent, on average, below which public debt stimulates private investment. Our additional analysis involving selected developed economies suggests that the crowding out effect is less evident relative to the emerging economies as higher public debt stocks do not seem to significantly undermine their private investments. These results have implications for debt sustainability and maintaining a reasonable public debt–GDP ratio is crucial for sustainable investment growth.

Time And Frequency Dependency Of Foreign Exchange Rates And Country Risk: Evidence From Turkey, Derviş Kirikkaleli, Mustafa Tevfik Kartal, Tomiwa Sunday Adebayo
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study examines the time and frequency dependency nexus between foreign exchange (FX) rates and country risk in Turkey. We considered Turkey because it is a negative outlier country in terms of the progress of these indicators. Using quarterly data from 1990/Q1 to 2018/Q4 and the Wavelet Coherence approach, we find that an increase in the country risk causes an increase in the FX rates at different frequencies, especially in the medium and long term and different periods. The results highlight the significance of country risk for the progress of the FX rates. Policy implications are discussed
Integration Of Solar + Storage Installation Upstream In Modular Construction, Ondrej Labik
Integration Of Solar + Storage Installation Upstream In Modular Construction, Ondrej Labik
LSU Master's Theses
High initial costs, mainly due to inefficient construction processes, remains the greatest barrier for residential adoption of solar+storage (SPS) system. Modular construction, having a factory-controlled environment and control over the home design, is well suited to address these issues (e.g., efficiencies, waste, inventory control, quality). Furthermore, these areas have great potential in modular construction to address the high initial cost issue. This study focuses on the integration of SPS installation upstream in modular housing. Although moving the SPS installation process into the factory has many barriers (e.g., including change of scope of work at some workstations without affecting the whole …
Pragmatism And Associative Political Obligations, David Lefkowitz
Pragmatism And Associative Political Obligations, David Lefkowitz
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Proponents of an associative account of political obligation maintain that individuals bear certain moral duties simply in virtue of their membership in a particular political community. I defend this thesis by interpreting it as a metaethical claim that expresses or implicitly relies on a pragmatist account of the nature of normativity, justification, and knowledge. Such a defense has a number of virtues. First, it offers a compelling rationale for the strategy commonly employed to defend the associative thesis. Second, a pragmatist reading provides the resources necessary to rebut a number of objections advanced against the associative thesis, such as the …

Moral Transparency Of And Concerning Algorithmic Tools, Paul Hayes, Ibo Van De Poel, Marc Steen
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Algorithms and AI tools are becoming increasingly influential artefacts in commercial and governance contexts. Algorithms and AI tools are not value neutral; to some extent they must be rendered knowable and known as objects, and in their implementation and deployment, to see clearly and understand their implications for moral values, and what actions can be undertaken to optimise them in their design and use towards ethical goals, or whether they are even suitable for particular goals. Transparency is a term with variable uses and interpretations, a problem which can challenge its use in design and policy. Here, we attempt to …

Bringing Technological Transparency To Tenebrous Markets: The Case For Using Blockchain To Validate Carbon Credit Trading Markets, Gary E. Marchant, Zachary Cooper, Philip Gough-Stone
Natural Resources Journal
Carbon reductions have become a priority as companies and other entities emitting greenhouse gases seek to comply with regulatory requirements and commit to voluntary goals that are consistent with their sustainability pledges. These carbon reductions are accounted for by carbon credits, which are tradeable units of carbon reduction that can be used to comply with regulatory or voluntary carbon reduction credits. Many companies are making such carbon reduction promises, and are frequently relying on credits generated by non-traditional mitigation sources such as agriculture or forestry to achieve those reductions and credits. However, the credibility and reliance on such carbon credit …

Deciphering Lessons From The Ashes: Saving The Amazon, Shannon K. Woulfe
Natural Resources Journal
For over forty years, Brazil, its subnational governments, Indigenous communities, other nations, non-governmental organizations, corporations, and individuals have worked to conserve the Amazon rainforest through a staggering number of diverse international initiatives. While some initiatives have supported Brazil in decreasing the rate of deforestation over the past fifteen years, the 2019 fires demonstrated that destruction continues. Left unchecked, this irreversible destruction promises to amplify. Fortunately, the long history of global involvement in Amazon conservation provides ample lessons for effective, place-based deforestation prevention. Thoughtful and coordinated international action can address the current lethal combination of destructive factors: Brazil’s environmentally hostile federal …

On March 1, 2022 Yale University Press published his book Our Common Ground. It’s the first comprehensive history of America’s public lands, those managed by the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, in more than a half-century. It recounts the political decisions that led to the U.S. government stewarding this nearly one-third of the nation’s real estate primarily for conservation, recreation and other …
The Kids Are All Right: The Law Of Free Expression And New Information Technologies, Mark Tushnet
The Kids Are All Right: The Law Of Free Expression And New Information Technologies, Mark Tushnet
Catholic University Law Review
Recently the literature on free expression has turned to the question, should the law of free expression be adjusted because of the availability of new information technologies (hereafter NIT), and if so, how? The only thing about NIT that distinguishes them from traditional media is that disseminating expression via NIT is much less expensive than doing so via traditional media. The tenor of recent scholarship on NIT and free expression is that the invention of NIT does support some modification of free expression law. This Essay argues that that conclusion might be correct, but that many of the arguments offered …

To Infinity And Beyond: Shifting The Space Regulatory Framework To Create Conservation-Minded Expansion, Brandon M.G. Dekema
To Infinity And Beyond: Shifting The Space Regulatory Framework To Create Conservation-Minded Expansion, Brandon M.G. Dekema
Natural Resources Journal
The early days of American expansion were categorized by policies that emphasized resource extraction and utilization. In turn, these policies created major conflicts with overuse, ownership, and rehabilitation−, many of which continue to this day. Now, the United States has begun to shift its focus to the next untapped frontier: outer space. As resource extraction in space grows more feasible, the United States has begun to shape a regulatory framework. In doing so, the United States is copying early American resource policy, leaving open the same gaps for conflicts arising from overuse, ownership disputes, and restoration. This paper analyzes historical …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The usage of electronic cigarettes (ECs) has surged since their invention two decades ago. However, to date, the health effects of EC aerosol exposure are still not well understood because of insufficient data on the chemical composition of EC aerosols and the corresponding evidence of health risks upon exposure. Herein, we quantified the metals in primary and secondhand aerosols generated by three brands of ECs. By combining aerosol filter sampling and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we assessed the mass of metals as a function of EC flavoring, nicotine concentration, device power, puff duration, and aging of the devices. …

Metal-Free Synthesis Of N-Heterocycles Via Intramolecular Electrochemical C-H Aminations, Huiqiao Wang, Yongjun Zheng, Hucheng Xu, Jiaru Zou, Congrui Grace Jin
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
N-heterocycles are key structural units in many drugs, biologically interesting molecules and functional materials. To avoid the residues of metal catalysts, the construction of N-heterocycles under metal-free conditions has attracted much research attention in academia and industry. Among them, the intramolecular electrochemical C-H aminations arguably constitute environmentally friendly methodologies for the metal-free construction of N-heterocycles, mainly due to the direct use of clean electricity as the redox agents. With the recent renaissance of organic electrosynthesis, the intramolecular electrochemical C-H aminations have undergone much progress in recent years. In this article, we would like to summarize the advances in this research …
Transparency And Reliance In Antidiscrimination Law, Steven L. Willborn
Transparency And Reliance In Antidiscrimination Law, Steven L. Willborn
Catholic University Law Review
All antidiscrimination laws have two structural features – transparency and reliance – that are important, even central, to their design, but have gone largely unnoticed. On transparency, some laws, like the recent salary-ban laws, attempt to prevent the employer from learning about the disfavored factor on the theory that an employer cannot rely on an unknown factor. Other laws require publication of the disfavored factor, such as salary, on the theory that it is harder to discriminate in the sunlight. Still other laws are somewhere between these two extremes. The Americans with Disabilities Act, for example, limits but does not …

Addressing Teacher Attrition Through Trauma-Informed Practices In The Workplace, Amy Pahl, Amy L. Pahl
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Teacher attrition and turnover have been widely studied to understand the reason for the number of teachers moving each year or leaving the profession altogether. Researchers have attempted to understand the contributing factors that lead to teacher movement and attrition, yet a knowledge gap exists between understanding the problem and finding solutions. The aim of this study was to investigate how implementing trauma-informed practices in the workplace impacts teacher mobility and attrition. A grounded theory approach was taken, which data from interviews to investigate the problem. Teachers who have left the profession or have moved from a position were interviewed …

Fisheries Research Articles
The efficacy of fisheries management strategies depends on stock assessment and management actions being carried out at appropriate spatial scales. This requires understanding of spatial and temporal population structure and connectivity, which is challenging in weakly structured and highly connected marine populations. We carried out a population genomics study of the heavily exploited snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) along ~2600 km of the Australian coastline, with a focus on Western Australia (WA). We used 10,903 filtered SNPs in 341 individuals from eight sampling locations to characterize population structure and connectivity in snapper across WA and to assess if current spatial …

Central Bank Digital Currency: What Factors Determine Its Adoption?, Novi Maryaningsih, Suahasil Nazara, Febrio N. Kacaribu, Solikin M. Juhro
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This paper attempts to explain the differences in Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) adoption across emerging and advanced countries using an ordered probit model. Based on a cross-country dataset, we show that wholesale CBDC is more advanced in countries with developed financial markets and greater cross-border transactions. Retail CBDC is more advanced in countries with lower financial inclusion and a large informal economy. We further show that different factors affect retail CBDC adoption across emerging and advanced countries. However, cross-border transactions are the most crucial factor influencing wholesale CBDC adoption across emerging and advanced countries.
Credit Risk Amid Banking Uncertainty In Vietnam, Van Dan Dang, Hoang Chung Nguyen
Credit Risk Amid Banking Uncertainty In Vietnam, Van Dan Dang, Hoang Chung Nguyen
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Using a new measure of micro uncertainty based on the cross-sectional dispersion of bank-level shocks, we analyze the impact of banking uncertainty on credit risk in Vietnam during the period 2007–2019. We document that a higher level of banking uncertainty may increase credit risk, and this unfavorable impact is mitigated at larger, better capitalized, and more liquid banks. As compared to private-owned banks, state-owned banks experience higher credit risk during periods of uncertainty. Further analysis supports the “search for yield” hypothesis and helps to better understand why credit risk increases amid uncertainty.

This study investigates the formation of the interaction between monetary and fiscal policies in Indonesia during periods of economic turmoil in the US (external shock) based on the Hybrid New Keynesian (HNK) model. The study estimates the HNK model using the Full Information Maximum Likelihood and time-series data over the period 2001Q1-2014Q4. The result reveals the form of coordination is a monetary-led policy mix between active monetary policy and passive fiscal policy. The degree of coordination is down when external shock increases
