Podium Presentation: Continuous Labor Epidural Placement Trends Among Parturients: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Aleksandr A. Lyakhov, Teresa Bigand, Amanda Affleck, Kenn Daratha, Kris Daratha

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

Childbirth is very painful, and unmanaged pain may reduce patient satisfaction or lead to other complications. Evidence indicates that pain severity is lower among parturient women administered analgesia via a continuous labor epidural (CLE) and that maternal request is sufficient indication for CLE placement to manage labor pain. In some cases, a medical induction of labor may be scheduled, offering an opportunity for proactive pain management from hospital staff. Yet, trends on timing of CLE placement among parturient women with scheduled labor induction versus spontaneous labor in hospitals in Eastern Washington at one health system are unclear.

Purpose:

The …

Sinus Pauses And Asystole As A Rare Presentation Of Thyrotoxic Crisis: A Case Report, Christian Akem Dimala, Charnjeet Sandhu, Oreoluwa Oladiran, Agnieszka Mochon, William Finneran Iii

Transformative Medicine

Introduction

Thyroid crisis is a rare and life-threatening endocrine emergency characterized by exaggerated clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism with cardiovascular manifestations being the most severe. Rhythm disturbances, sinus tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, are the commonest cardiac manifestations of severe thyrotoxicosis; however, asystole remains a very atypical and uncommon presentation. We present a case of thyrotoxicosis due to Grave’s disease complicated by multiple episodes of asystole.

Case Presentation

A 65-year-old female recently diagnosed with Grave’s disease presented to the hospital with recurrent episodes of syncope. Her hospital course was significant for atrial fibrillation with subsequent progression to sinus pauses and asystole spontaneously …

The Modified Rankin Scale Can Accurately Be Derived From The Electronic Medical Record, Derek Isenberg, Nelson Prus, Frederick Ramsey, Nina T. Gentile Jun 2022

The Modified Rankin Scale Can Accurately Be Derived From The Electronic Medical Record, Derek Isenberg, Nelson Prus, Frederick Ramsey, Nina T. Gentile

Transformative Medicine

Abstract

Introduction

The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) is used to assess functional outcomes after a stroke and is the primary outcome in many stroke trials. For retrospective stroke research or stroke research in which patients are lost to study follow up, review of the electronic medical record (EMR) may be the sole way to estimate a patient’s functional outcome. The purpose of this study is to determine if a mRS can be accurately derived from the electronic medical record EMR.

Methods

This study used data from completed stroke studies in which in-person 90-day mRS were collected as part of the …

An Assessment Of Information Literacy Competence Of Doctoral Students In Universities In Ogun State, Adesola Adekunle, Ezinwanyi Madukoma

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information is the foundation upon which all academic activities are built. The quality of teaching, learning and research is a function of the quality of information available to practitioners. While the current information landscape is characterized with information adequacy made possible by the application of ICTs to information handling, the sheer magnitude of available information tending towards overload is itself a challenge in the current technology-driven world we live in. In response to this challenge, academic institutions all over the world came up with what is known as information literacy described as an intellectual framework which enables individuals to identify, …

An Investigation Into Academic Self-Efficacy, Peer Influence And Examination Anxiety As Correlates Of Academic Achievement Drive Of Library And Information Science Students, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In any institution of learning, the true prove of any student’s performance is the level of academic achievement grade which may be a product of many independent variables. On the other hand, an impaired academic achievement motivation more often than not may portend danger on the learning outcome and intellectual well being of such student(s). This study therefore investigated the relationship between academic self-efficacy, peer group and examination anxiety with academic achievement drive of library and information science students. The study used descriptive survey research design and guided by three research questions as well as three formulated and tested hypothesis. …

Encrypted Memory Access By Peripheral Devices Of A Confidential Virtual Machine, Marc S. Orr, Rachit Mathur, Erdem Aktas, Andrew Honig Jun 2022

Encrypted Memory Access By Peripheral Devices Of A Confidential Virtual Machine, Marc S. Orr, Rachit Mathur, Erdem Aktas, Andrew Honig

Defensive Publications Series

A confidential virtual machine (CVM) uses a hardware-rooted key to encrypt customer data written to memory. For enhanced security, the CVM makes the plaintext-to-ciphertext map depend on the physical address (PA) of the memory location. Peripheral devices operate not in PA space but in input-output address space. Currently, peripherals can only perform memory accesses without encryption, or need to use a two-pass, high-latency, power-intensive encryption procedure involving a transport key distinct from the hardware-rooted key.

This disclosure describes techniques to enable a peripheral device of a confidential virtual machine to access encrypted memory using a single encryption pass. The techniques …

As systems advance, people are optimistic that forensic science will provide long-term interventions that surpass the current solutions, including setting stronger passwords and firewall protection. The future of online privacy is changing, and more practical interventions, such as email, malware, mobile, and network forensics, must be integrated, …
