Teaching Children With Autism To Tact Private Events Based On Common Properties, Madisyn Quidort
Teaching Children With Autism To Tact Private Events Based On Common Properties, Madisyn Quidort
Theses and Dissertations
Skinner (1957) proposed that people learn to talk about private events in several ways. This study sought to examine the plausibility of one of those mechanisms: common properties. Skinner asserted that children learn tacts for public stimuli through normal interaction with their caregivers. When a child experiences a private stimulus that shares some feature with a previously learned public stimulus, the child generalizes the tact to the private sensation because there is a common property between the two stimuli. Three children with autistic disorder were taught 6 to 9 sensation tacts (e.g., prickly, cozy, tight) depicted in videos (e.g., a …
The Effects Of Teaching Children To Tact Their Emotions On Problem Behavior, Haley Nicole Harber
The Effects Of Teaching Children To Tact Their Emotions On Problem Behavior, Haley Nicole Harber
Theses and Dissertations
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often struggle to understand and describe private events, such as emotions. When an individual cannot communicate appropriately, it can lead to various problem behaviors. Previous literature suggested that we teach children to tact their emotions (e.g., "I am sad," "I am angry") in an attempt to decrease their problem behavior. The primary purpose of the current study is to teach children with autism to tact their emotions. The secondary purpose is to evaluate the effects of empathy statements on problem behavior. Four children participated, three with problem behavior maintained by access to tangibles and …
The Effects Of Guided Notes In An Online Behavior Analysis Graduate Course, Natalya Theresa Gutierrez
The Effects Of Guided Notes In An Online Behavior Analysis Graduate Course, Natalya Theresa Gutierrez
Theses and Dissertations
Guided notes are handouts with fill-in-the-blank spots, incomplete outlines, or PowerPoint slides with blank spaces identical to those used by the instructor during class lectures (Biggers et al., 2020). This note-taking strategy was initially created for those who have difficulty in the classroom, such as students with learning disabilities (Williams et al., 2012). However, guided notes became a supplemental note-taking technique used during lectures for non-disabled college students as well. The authors examined the impact of guided notes in an online course format, counterbalancing three conditions across participants and instructional units: Guided notes, learning objectives and no notes to determine …
Increasing Practical Verbal Behavior In Esports Players, Victoria Perry German
Increasing Practical Verbal Behavior In Esports Players, Victoria Perry German
Theses and Dissertations
Verbal behavior, sports, and performance skills have been targeted in behavior analytic research in the past. However, no research to date has targeted Esports as a setting, nor has there been a substantial focus on communication as a target as opposed to more technical skills in sports, organizations, or similar settings. Esports is a large, growing industry of competitive videogaming, with a variety of games represented at different levels, many of which are team-based and require significant coordination and cooperation between players on a team. Thus, in this study we targeted verbal responses in a team of collegiate Esports players …

INTRODUCTION: Mutations in the LMNA gene, encoding Lamin A/C (LMNA), are established causes of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The phenotype is typically characterized by progressive cardiac conduction defects, arrhythmias, heart failure, and premature death. DCM is primarily considered a disease of cardiac myocytes. However, LMNA is also expressed in other cardiac cell types, including fibroblasts.
AIM: The purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of the fibroblasts to DCM caused by LMNA deficiency.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The Lmna gene was deleted by crossing the platelet-derived growth factor receptor α-Cre recombinase (Pdgfra-Cre) and floxed Lmna (LmnaF/F) …

A Comparison Of Correlation-Agnostic Techniques For Magnetic Navigation, Clark N. Taylor, Josh Hiatt
Faculty Publications
Navigation using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is common for autonomous vehicles (ground or air). Unfortunately, GNSS-based navigation solutions are often susceptible to jamming, interference, and a limited number of satellites. A proposed technique to aid in navigation when a GNSS-based system fails is magnetic navigation - navigation using the Earth's magnetic anomaly field. This solution comes with its own set of problems including the need for quality magnetic maps in every area in which magnetic navigation will be used. Many of the currently available magnetic maps are generated from a combination of dated magnetic surveys, resulting in maps …

Adults living with sickle cell disease are at risk for experiencing severe illness from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to the complexity of their disease. Additionally, self-management and navigating the healthcare system may be challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we conducted telephone interviews with 25 participants to explore the experiences of Black adults living with sickle cell disease during the early months of the pandemic in the United States. Three overarching themes characterize their experiences: management of sickle cell disease was further complicated by the pandemic, fear of the virus contributed to physical and social isolation, and employment and …

The Impact Of Juvenile Offender Race On Public Perception Of Crime Seriousness, Megan Whitaker
The Impact Of Juvenile Offender Race On Public Perception Of Crime Seriousness, Megan Whitaker
Dissertations
Public perception of crime is an important focus of research, especially when considering juvenile offenders. However, there is very limited research in this area. This study looked at how the public perceives crime seriousness and how race of the juvenile offender impacts the overall seriousness rating. An online survey that included 15 crime scenarios was completed by 176 participants. It was hypothesized that a crime would be rated as more severe when the juvenile offender is African American as compared to a Caucasian juvenile offender. Results found that participants overall rated the seriousness of offenses as significantly higher for Caucasian …

Perceptions Of Out-Of-School Reading Motivation For Female Middle School Students, Danielle Porch
Dissertations
Literacy engagement and motivation to read is lacking in middle school reading classrooms. Educators struggle with the challenge of motivating students to read and actively engage with text both inside and outside of school. Research indicates that female and male middle school students have unique characteristics and habits as readers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perspectives of female middle school students regarding their out-of-school recreational reading time, their attitudes towards reading, and their reading habits. The themes derived from this study indicated the students’ desires to have their reading instruction personalized and have their reading …

Empowering Linked Data In Cultural Heritage Institutions: A Knowledge Management Perspective, Lei Zhang
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This reported research explores the barriers and challenges in linked data implementation in cultural heritage institutions, i.e., libraries, archives, and museums. Various data were collected from different sources regarding the linked data use cases related to libraries, archives, and museums over the past decade and analyzed from multiple facets. The analysis revealed very few activities of effective knowledge management in the linked data implementation and suggested that the crucial role of knowledge management and innovation should deserve enough attention in linked data projects and services. The findings will add value to the literature on knowledge management in the context of …

Gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient "kLa " for CH4, CO2, and Ar were experimentally measured at different conditions in a mimicked Fischer–Tropsch (FT) slurry bubble column reactor by using a non-invasive gaseous tracer technique and the axial dispersion model. Results validate the square root relation, between kLa and diffusivity "Dg", that can be used to predict kLa for different species with k La values available in the literature. Additionally, Higbie's penetration theory was adopted along with bubble dynamics parameters estimation to develop a correlation for predicting kL …

On May 22, 2019, Botswana decided after many years to lift its ban on hunting elephants and in February 2020 held its first auctions for the right to hunt elephants. This turnaround change in their law coincides with a rapidly changing legal landscape in the United States related to the practice of trophy hunting of rare, intelligent animals, including elephants. This Article analyzes the fluid legal landscape surrounding this uncommon form of hunting of rare animals and possible ways of using the Administrative Procedures Act and the Federal Advisory Committee Act as a means of challenging the government’s rapidly changing …

In many states today, there are laws on the books designed to protect the legitimacy and fairness of elections by barring the knowing or reckless dissemination of demonstrably false statements. Regulating this kind of deliberate deception protects the public against the erosion of First Amendment freedoms – such as the freedom to think and express one’s own thoughts and to meaningfully deliberate in an electoral process free from deliberate efforts to flood the zone of public discourse with confusion and mistrust based on deliberate and provable falsehoods. Some of these regulations, however, have been successfully challenged on First Amendment grounds. …

Persons institutionalized in forensic psychiatric facilities have been hidden from the public view for decades – physically, socially, and legally. The forensic population also faces multiple forms of discrimination, both for their criminal history and mental illness. This reality must be radically reconsidered in light of the ratification of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the first legally binding instrument devoted to the comprehensive protection of the rights of persons with disabilities. There has been, however, virtually no attention paid by criminologists to the potential impact of this Convention on forensic populations. In this …

Making Me Ill: Environmental Racism And Justice As Disability, Britney Wilson
Articles & Chapters
Civil rights legal scholars and practitioners have lamented the constraints of the largely intent-based legal framework required to challenge racial discrimination and injustice. As a result, they have sought alternative methods that seemingly require less overt proof of discrimination and are more equipped to address structural harm. One of these proposed solutions involves the use of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—due to its affirmative mandate to address discrimination by reasonable modification or accommodation—and the framing of issues of racial injustice in terms of disability or the deprivation of medical rights. Environmental justice, an area in which issues of both …

Firewalls: A Necessary Tool To Enable Social Rights For Undocumented Migrants In Social Work, L Hermansson, A Lundberg, S Gruber, A Jolly, Et Al
School of Health Professions
Firewalls are clear divisions between border policing and the provision of basic social rights. They have a dual character: to ensure that no information collected with the purpose of safeguarding basic social rights should be shared for immigration control purposes; and that migrants should not be subject to immigration control when being present at, or in the vicinity, of religious, private and public institutions upholding and providing social rights. This article suggests a normative argument for ‘firewalls’ in the context of social work and develops the concept theoretically as a principle practised and negotiated at different scales.

AbstractThere is an urgent need to apply effective, data-driven approaches to reliably predict engineered nanomaterial (ENM) toxicity. Here we introduce a predictive computational framework based on the molecular and phenotypic effects of a large panel of ENMs across multiple in vitro and in vivo models. Our methodology allows for the grouping of ENMs based on multi-omics approaches combined with robust toxicity tests. Importantly, we identify mRNA-based toxicity markers and extensively replicate them in multiple independent datasets. We find that models based on combinations of omics-derived features and material intrinsic properties display significantly improved predictive accuracy as compared to physicochemical properties …

Implementing A Screening Tool For Social Determinants Of Health In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Kimberly S. Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract The environment and conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age are social determinants of health (SDOH). Specifically, SDOH are categorized into five domains: (a) economic stability, (b) education access and quality, (c) health care access and quality, (d) neighborhood and built environment, and (e) social and context communities. Inequities in these domains are associated with health disparities that lead to poorer health and quality of life. The aim of this quality improvement project was to implement the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patient Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE) to screen patients’ SDOH …

Assistive Technologies Used In Canadian University Libraries For The Visually Impaired, Ramina Mukundan, Nikesh Narayanan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information has always been a catalyst for societal improvements. Libraries play a crucial role in ensuring equitable access to information resources. Enhanced accessibility helps in establishing an atmosphere that supports and promotes inclusive education. Information and resource access is quite a challenge for visually impaired people. The needs of people with varying levels of visual impairment differ in their range and magnitude. The use of assistive technologies greatly aids in closing this gap. Resource and accessibility provisions should be modified to meet the needs of visually impaired users, who need specialized equipment to access traditional and modern technology-based information resources. …
