Examining Introductory Computer Science Student Cognition When Testing Software Under Different Test Adequacy Criteria, Austin Shin
Master's Theses
The ability to test software is invaluable in all areas of computer science, but it is often neglected in computer science curricula. Test adequacy criteria (TAC), tools that measure the effectiveness of a test suite, have been used as aids to improve software testing teaching practices, but little is known about how students respond to them. Studies have examined the cognitive processes of students programming and professional developers writing tests, but none have investigated how student testers test with TAC. If we are to improve how they are used in the classroom, we must start by understanding the different ways …

Identification And Quantitation Of Unspecified Impurities Discovered In Novel Oral Irinotecan By Lc-Ms/Ms And Uhplc, Laura B. Miller
Forensic Science Master's Projects
Irinotecan is a cancer medication approved for medical use in the United States in 1996. It is currently administered via intravenous injection. However, intravenous dosing has disadvantages such as requirement of administration by a trained professional in a medical facility, possible severe adverse effects, pain at the injection site, and possible hemolysis if injected too rapidly. Previously oral administration was not feasible because the p-glycoprotein (p-GP) on the cell membrane of stomach cells acts as a defense mechanism against harmful substances by pumping the irinotecan back into the intestinal lumen for excretion. With the discovery of the p-GP inhibitor encequidar …

Forensic Science Master's Projects
Forensic Serology is a branch of forensic science that deals with the identification of certain trace evidence. Blood is the most commonly recovered and most important piece of evidence analyzed and used in criminal investigations. As evidence blood holds significance in criminal investigations because it can link a crime to an individual or exclude their involvement. Serology and DNA analysis are often aligned, because the same evidence item is often analyzed by both sections. During a criminal investigation it is important for to identifying the type of biological material or trace evidence found. The possible identification of bodily fluids can …

Exploring The Use Of Machine Learning To Parameterize Vertical Mixing In The Ocean Surface Boundary Layer, Jun Hong Liang, Jianguo Yuan, Xiaoliang Wan, Jinliang Liu, Bingqing Liu, Hakun Jang, Mayank Tyagi

In ocean and climate models, the simulation of upper-ocean temperature and salinity depends on mixing parameterizations for ocean surface boundary layer turbulence. Existing mixing parameterizations are based on physical principles with empirical parameters. However, they are still imperfect, leading to biases in the simulation of physical states in the upper ocean. In this study, we explore the use of the data-based machine learning technique, specifically, a deep neural network model, for the effects of vertical mixing in the ocean surface boundary layer. The model is trained using process-oriented simulations of the upper-ocean turbulence driven by realistic forcing conditions at the …

Heat Pulse Testing At Monitoring Wells To Estimate Subsurface Fluid Velocities In Geological Co2 Storage, Refaat G. Hashish, Mehdi Zeidouni
Faculty Publications
Monitoring the injected CO2 during geological CO2 storage (GCS) is essential to assure containment and identify CO2 leakage. In this work, a new approach is introduced to estimate the evolution of the downhole fluid velocity at a monitoring well and identify CO2 arrival time using in-well heat pulse/tracer test. The proposed technique involves using a downhole heater to generate a series of heat pulses and measuring their corresponding temperature response. The surface temperature of the downhole heater is controlled by the supplied electrical power and the heat loss by convection to the surroundings. Convective heat transfer is well described using …

Fishing Camps And Topiary Trees: Place, Affect, And Moral Agency In A Papua New Guinea Modernity, David Lipset

Despite being regarded as a founding father in sociology and as no less canonical in anthropology (Merton 1934; Horowitz 1982), the overall theoretical framework of Durkheim’s arguments with respect to place, affect, and agency in The Division of Labor in Society (1933) and The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1995) are too often ignored or unwittingly reinvented (Stewart 2007; Berlant 2008). I therefore want to begin this essay with a brief outline of how I understand his main points in order to lay a theoretical groundwork for my analysis of the shifting relationship of place, affect, and agency among the …

Honoring a life well lived...It is with great sadness that we share the news of Barbara Agonia's recent death. Barbara was a friend to WRIN for decades. It is often said that our accomplishments are not truly our own, as we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Barbara's impact on WRIN will resonate for years to come. Diminutive in stature yet magnanimous in spirit, Barbara served as Chair of WRIN's Inaugural Community Advisory Board (CAB) created in 2000. We were a very young institute then without much of a track record or community support. Barbara …

Securing Information On A Web Application System To Facilitate Online Blood Donation Booking, Hrishitva Patel
Faculty Publications
Blood donation has saved many lives in the past. According to statistics presented by the American Red Cross, a patient is in need of a blood transfusion every two seconds. There are many benefits that arise from blood donation to both the donor and the blood recipients. With blood donation, cancer patients, people involved in accidents, or those battling diseases that require blood donation have access to enough blood to sustain their survival. There is a need to digitize the blood donation booking to facilitate blood donation across the United States, and ensure patients in need of blood, receive their …

The Perceptions Of Spirituality And Self-Care Of Middle-Aged African American Men, Tyrone Rhabb
The Perceptions Of Spirituality And Self-Care Of Middle-Aged African American Men, Tyrone Rhabb
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perceptions of successful aging of middle-aged African American men. African American men continue to have the worst health status of all ethnic groups. This study explored middle-aged African American men who identified themselves as free of any physical or cognitive issues. The study explored how the men maintained their health while avoiding a primary care provider and health care system with a history of mistreatment and discrimination. The research study provided additional information about successful aging and the lived experience of those participants.
The aim was to address the gap …

Chromosome Number Evolution, Phylogeography, And The Effects Of Climate Change On Species Distributions In Polyploid Plant Systems, Courtney H. Babin
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Polyploidy, a term used to describe organisms with cells having more than two paired sets of chromosomes, is a significant driver of diversification among land plants. Over a century of research has advanced our understanding of polyploidization in some taxa, but polyploid organisms remain understudied. In this dissertation, I investigate chromosome number evolution, phylogeographic structure, genetic differentiation, and the effects of climate change on ploidy level distribution using polyploid plant systems. In the first chapter, I inferred a molecular phylogeny of Allium, an economically important genus that includes cultivated crops and ornamentals, to investigate evolutionary transitions in chromosome number …

Auditory Cortical Differences In Children And Adolescents With Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, Amanda I. Rowan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
People with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) have a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with severe medical, cognitive, and psychiatric challenges including increased risk for developing a psychotic disorder in adulthood. The origins of this risk are not fully understood but atypical brain development is well documented. Hearing loss is also common in this population, yet little is known about the interaction between medical symptoms such as chronic ear infections and hearing loss with brain development in regions implicated in the etiopathology of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCZ). The present study used structural magnetic resonance imaging to measure auditory cortical regions of interest …
