For Colored Girls Who Considered Natural When The Perm Was Enuf: A Cultural Examination Of The Political Significance Of Natural Hair Youtube Influencers, Randrika C. Henderson

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the discourse between natural hair YouTube vloggers and audiences’ interactions with two popular YouTube channels, Jasmine Brown and The Chic Natural. This study uses hooks’ (2003) oppositional gaze as a theoretical framework that centers on media representation of Black women and the inability to produce images that mirrors Black women’s spectatorship (hooks, 2003). This study investigates how hegemonic and averisve racist ideologies (often represented in Western beauty standards) are encoded and decoded in Black women’s mediated spaces. This cultural and critical semiotic analysis explores two research questions: how hegemonic structures exist during the interactions between influencers and …

Coaching helps teachers activate and better articulate their previous knowledge, skills, values, and belief systems, along with new concepts, to construct and continually refine an approach that is meaningful in their everyday work. This framework captures some commonalities of a positive coaching stance across contexts while allowing enough flexibility to make use of these ideas in ways that will serve that setting and teachers best.

An Exploration Of Ambulatory Visits And Medications Prescribed For Patients Diagnosed With Lupus Erythematosus In The United States, Salena Marie Preciado

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

This dissertation sought to understand the management and treatment of patients diagnosed with lupus erythematosus. To accomplish the objectives of this research, three studies were conducted. First, a systematic literature review was done to assess the current landscape of available clinical guidelines for disease treatment. This research then used the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data from 2006-2016 to explore real-world trends in medications prescribed, comorbidities and chronic conditions associated with lupus. Data is weighted to be nationally representative of the U.S. The third study explored sociological influences or nonclinical factors on the prescribing of medications for patients with lupus. …

Police Brutality In The United States Of America And Nigeria; A Comparative Analysis, Oludayo Philips Famakin-Johnson Aug 2022

Police Brutality In The United States Of America And Nigeria; A Comparative Analysis, Oludayo Philips Famakin-Johnson

Dissertations (2016-Present)

The recent spate of incidents regarding excessive use of force by law enforcement in the United States against mostly unarmed African Americans has elicited protests across the country. The ensuing outrage about police brutality brought to national attention the discriminatory practices in the criminal justice system. It also demonstrated that human rights violations by law enforcement are not an exclusive experience of developing nations, which are expected to look up to countries like the United States as a model for standard policing. Extant research, however, indicates excessive use of force is a common phenomenon in every country, including the United …

Gender Equality And Women Empowerment For Sustainable Development: The Challenge Of Unpaid Work, Jessica Jaye Ranieses

Center for Business Research and Development

This article focuses on women – a sector that has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to unpaid care work. Unpaid work refers to “all unpaid services provided within a household for its members, including care of persons and housework” (Elson, 2000, as cited by Xue & McMunn, 2021) and a phenomenon that women had already been bearing significantly even prior to the pandemic. With the COVID-19 pandemic where work has shifted remotely, women have now performed multiple roles more than ever. According to the United Nations (2020), among 38 nations, the amount of time spent by women …

Modeling Similarities Among Autism Spectrum Patients Using Word Embeddings On Clinical Notes, Raha Pirzadeh Aug 2022

Modeling Similarities Among Autism Spectrum Patients Using Word Embeddings On Clinical Notes, Raha Pirzadeh

Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in areas of social communication, reciprocal social interaction, restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior and interests, and cognitive or significant delays in early language development. Although we are seeing consistent research being done on understanding the genetic and biological aspects of ASD, diagnosing ASD patients is solely based on behavioral symptoms.

In this thesis, we leverage unsupervised machine learning techniques to better understand ASD patients and the challenging behaviors they present. We used Doc2Vec to create neural word embedding vectors on the clinical notes presented and K-means clustering to group the patients …

Impact Of An Active Learning Intervention On Student Success In An Introductory-Level Biology Course, Cynthia Littlejohn Aug 2022

Impact Of An Active Learning Intervention On Student Success In An Introductory-Level Biology Course, Cynthia Littlejohn

Dissertations

Large enrollment introductory-level courses with high rates of students receiving a D, F, or withdrawing have been identified within higher education as gateway courses. Students not successfully completing these courses are disproportionately represented by historically and continually marginalized populations, such as low-income, poorly represented ethnic groups, and first-generation students. A form of blended learning called the flipped class model is becoming increasingly prevalent in gateway courses. A flipped class design may reduce the cognitive load by allowing time for processing information before class while cooperative learning may result in a collective working memory effect where social interactions may serve to …

A Predictive Model Of Completion At Mississippi’S Community Colleges, Richard Baker Aug 2022

A Predictive Model Of Completion At Mississippi’S Community Colleges, Richard Baker

Dissertations

In the 2020 American presidential election and throughout the time since, the discussion of free community college continues to raise its head in the present political landscape in the United States. As the recognition of the contribution of community colleges to the overall educational level of the country grows, increased focus is going to be placed on how efficient and effective these two-year institutions are.

This research expands the body of knowledge by combining Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) and Astin’s Input-Environment-Output (IEO) model into an educational production function as defined by Bowles (1970). Neither RDT nor IEO is complete on …

Data Collection And Machine Learning Methods For Automated Pedestrian Facility Detection And Mensuration, Joseph Bailey Luttrell Iv Aug 2022

Data Collection And Machine Learning Methods For Automated Pedestrian Facility Detection And Mensuration, Joseph Bailey Luttrell Iv

Dissertations

Large-scale collection of pedestrian facility (crosswalks, sidewalks, etc.) presence data is vital to the success of efforts to improve pedestrian facility management, safety analysis, and road network planning. However, this kind of data is typically not available on a large scale due to the high labor and time costs that are the result of relying on manual data collection methods. Therefore, methods for automating this process using techniques such as machine learning are currently being explored by researchers. In our work, we mainly focus on machine learning methods for the detection of crosswalks and sidewalks from both aerial and street-view …

Reconstruction And Analysis Of Thermodynamically Constrained Models Reveal Metabolic Responses Of A Deep-Sea Bacterium To Temperature Perturbations, Keith Dufault-Thompson, Chang Nie, Huahua Jian, Fengping Wang, Ying Zhang Aug 2022

Reconstruction And Analysis Of Thermodynamically Constrained Models Reveal Metabolic Responses Of A Deep-Sea Bacterium To Temperature Perturbations, Keith Dufault-Thompson, Chang Nie, Huahua Jian, Fengping Wang, Ying Zhang

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Microbial acclimation to different temperature conditions can involve broad changes in cell composition and metabolic efficiency. A systems-level view of these metabolic responses in nonmesophilic organisms, however, is currently missing. In this study, thermodynamically constrained genome-scale models were applied to simulate the metabolic responses of a deep-sea psychrophilic bacterium, Shewanella psychrophila WP2, under suboptimal (4°C), optimal (15°C), and supraoptimal (20°C) growth temperatures. The models were calibrated with experimentally determined growth rates of WP2. Gibbs free energy change of reactions (DrG9), metabolic fluxes, and metabolite concentrations were predicted using random simulations to characterize temperature-dependent changes in the metabolism. The modeling revealed …

Establishing A Baseline Vegetation Study Of The Monterey Pine Forest Understory In The Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, Natalie Nemeth Aug 2022

Establishing A Baseline Vegetation Study Of The Monterey Pine Forest Understory In The Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, Natalie Nemeth

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

There is invaluable genetic information in native Monterey pine forests; having unadulterated genetic information is critical for the pine industry as well as conserving native trees in native stands. The Monterey pine forest and its understory are incredibly sensitive and precious ecological systems. Maintaining healthy remnant forests, including understory vegetation, is important for local biodiversity. In 2020, the Monterey pine was listed as an endangered species candidate, yet so little has been published about Monterey pine in California, with outdated reports and a lack of information about the forest floor. Monterey pine is endemic to only three locations on the …

Mercury Methylation Potentials In Sediments Of An Ancient Cypress Wetland Using Species-Specific Isotope Dilution Gc-Icp-Ms, Derek D. Bussan, Chris Douvris, James V. Cizdziel Aug 2022

Mercury Methylation Potentials In Sediments Of An Ancient Cypress Wetland Using Species-Specific Isotope Dilution Gc-Icp-Ms, Derek D. Bussan, Chris Douvris, James V. Cizdziel

Faculty and Student Publications

Wetlands are of a considerable environmental value as they provide food and habitat for plants and animals. Several important chemical transformations take place in wetland media, including the conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg) to monomethylmercury (MeHg), a toxic compound with a strong tendency for bioconcentration. Considering the fact that wetlands are hotspots for Hg methylation, we investigated, for the first time, Hg methylation and demethylation rates in an old growth cypress wetland at Sky Lake in the Mississippi Delta. The Sky Lake ecosystem undergoes large-scale water level fluctuations causing alternating periods of oxic and anoxic conditions in the sediment. These …

Mask-Wearing Behaviors In Air Travel During Coronavirus Pandemic – An Extended Theory Of Planned Behavior Model, Jing Yu Pan, Dahai Liu

Center for Advanced Transportation Mobility

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the air transport industry, forcing airlines to take measures to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. Among the many protective measures, a mask mandate onboard the airplane is an important one, but travelers’ maskwearing intentions during flight remain uninvestigated especially in the US where mask use is a topic of on-going debate. This study focused on the mask use of airline passengers when they fly during COVID-19, using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model to examine the relationship between nine predicting factors and the mask-wearing intention in the aircraft cabin. A survey …
