New Literacies In The Classroom: An Exploration Of The Differences In Reading Comprehension Between New And Traditional Literacies, Brenna A. Holsclaw
Masters Projects
The use of New Literacies within the classroom has become commonplace over the last few years, as educators work to stay engaging and meet the needs of students in our rapidly changing world. While there are many potential benefits in using these technologies, this project asserts the importance of explicit instruction in the realm of new literacy mediums, as research indicates that reading and writing practices face different struggles between traditional mediums and digital mediums. In spite of this, most educators are unaware that new literacies need to be addressed in a different manner than traditional literacies and continue to …
Genetic Freedom Of The Seas In The Age Of Extractivism: Marine Genetic Resources In Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, Irus Braverman
Genetic Freedom Of The Seas In The Age Of Extractivism: Marine Genetic Resources In Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, Irus Braverman
Contributions to Books
Published as Chapter 4 in Laws of the Sea: Interdisciplinary Currents, Irus Braverman, ed.
Areas beyond national jurisdiction are the largest environment on earth and marine genetic resources are its new, and perhaps final, frontier. It is no wonder, then, that the scope and protection of marine genetic resources in this oceanic space have been hotly contested and that a new doctrine for ocean governance has been coined in this context: mare geneticum. This chapter examines different definitions of marine genetic resources debated in the ongoing treaty negotiations over areas beyond national jurisdiction (the BBNJ), the conflicting interests involved, and …

The radio galaxy M87 is the central dominant galaxy of the Virgo Cluster. Very high-energy (VHE, ≳0.1 TeV) emission from M87 has been detected by imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, marginal evidence for VHE long-term emission has also been observed by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, a gamma-ray and cosmic-ray detector array located in Puebla, Mexico. The mechanism that produces VHE emission in M87 remains unclear. This emission originates in its prominent jet, which has been spatially resolved from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we construct a spectral energy distribution from radio to gamma rays that is representative …

The Effects Of Polymorphisms Of Viral Protein R Of Hiv-1 On The Induction Of Apoptosis In Primary Cells And The Characterization Of Twelve Novel Bacillus Anthracis Bacteriophage, Jacob D. Fairholm
Theses and Dissertations
Viral protein r (Vpr) of Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) plays an important role in the ability of the virus to infect cells and cause disease. Two polymorphisms to Vpr have been shown to result in differences in disease progression in infected individuals. R36W tends to result in rapid disease progression while R77Q results in long-term non-progression. In order to better understand how these polymorphisms result in these different disease phenotypes, our lab has recently shown that in cell culture, the R36W polymorphism results in increased viral replication and greater induction of cell death. On the other hand, infection …
Student-Created Learning Objects For Mathematics Renewable Assignments: The Potential Value They Bring To The Broader Community, Webster Wong
Theses and Dissertations
Having students create Learning Objects (LOs) through renewable assignments has proved more helpful to the student creators compared to disposable assignments in some aspects. Additionally, some researchers have presented evidence where the student-created LOs could benefit the users of the LOs more than traditional learning resources. In this study, I examined a collection of LOs created by college students in the subject of mathematics to understand the nature of the value that a student-created LO could bring to other learners. By extending a framework for non-disposable assignments (Seraphin et al., 2019), I evaluated 3 components that affect the value of …

However, with the dynamic of elevation changes during running, more research is needed to understand how various grades that will favor respective mechanics. PURPOSE: In this study, we focused on determining whether certain running mechanics and anatomy would predict a runner's oxygen uptake between downhill versus uphill running. METHODS: Twenty-one experienced runners completed six 5-min running trials (1 shoe x 3 grades x 2 visits) in a Saucony marathon racing shoe model (Type A) on level (3.83 m/s), uphill (+4% grade at 3.35 m/s), and downhill ( ˆ’4% …
Catharanthine Modulates Mesolimbic Dopamine Transmission: A Potential Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder, Benjamin M. Williams
Catharanthine Modulates Mesolimbic Dopamine Transmission: A Potential Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder, Benjamin M. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Catharanthine is derived from the Catharanthus roseus plant and is an analog to ibogaine, a drug that reduces opioid and alcohol withdrawal symptoms and decreases drug self-administration in both animals and humans. Catharanthine has promise to be an alternative pharmacological treatment for addiction without the adverse side effects associated with ibogaine. The objective of this study was to evaluate catharanthine’s effects on dopamine (DA) transmission in the mesolimbic DA system as well as determine its effects on both ethanol withdrawal induced anxiety and drug-seeking behaviors in mice. We hypothesized that catharanthine would inhibit evoked DA release in the nucleus accumbens …
Simulation Of Crystal Nucleation In Polymer Melts, Pierre Kawak
Simulation Of Crystal Nucleation In Polymer Melts, Pierre Kawak
Theses and Dissertations
Semicrystalline polymers are an important class of materials for their prevalence in today's markets and their desirable properties. These properties depend on the early stages of the polymer crystallization process where a crystal nucleates from the polymer melt. This nucleation process is conventionally understood via an extension of Classical Nucleation Theory to polymers (CNTP). However, recent experimental and simulation evidence points to nucleation mechanisms that do not agree with the predictions of CNTP. Specifically, these experiments suggest a previously unrecognized role of nematic phases in mediating the melt"“crystal transtion. To explain these observations, several new theories of nucleation alternate to …

A Comprehensive Phylogeny Of Stick And Leaf Insects (Insecta: Phasmatodea) Reveals Widespread Taxonomic Incongruence, Jackson B. Linde
Theses and Dissertations
Stick and leaf insects (Insecta: Phasmatodea) are a mesodiverse order of insects distributed across the world. These masters of masquerade crypsis are riddled with analogous morphological characters and lack a robust taxonomic framework. It seems that convergent evolution and the re-evolution of complex traits like wings and ocelli is perhaps the rule rather than the exception in stick insects. To investigate the re-acquisition of traits in this unique study system, a robust phylogenetic framework is essential. Our analyses combine traditional Sanger data with a transcriptomic backbone to provide the most corroborated phylogenetic analyses to date. To accomplish this, we employ …
Elucidating The Relationship Between Self-Reported Disability And Functional Movement In Individuals With Chronic Low Back Pain, Kelsey Ampudia Clark
Elucidating The Relationship Between Self-Reported Disability And Functional Movement In Individuals With Chronic Low Back Pain, Kelsey Ampudia Clark
Theses and Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Low back pain (LBP) is often exacerbated by movement and, during functional movements, people with LBP tend to inherently modify their posture and movement patterns to avoid aggravating their pain further. Therefore, analysis of spinal movement in people with LBP is necessary and may lead to the identification of movement-based clusters for optimal treatment. PURPOSE: The overall purpose of this study was to investigate how movement patterns in people with chronic LBP relate to their subjective level of pain-related disability. First, we determined which spinal movements best discriminate between people with chronic LBP and asymptomatic controls; second, we ascertained …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Abstract
Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the deadliest cancers. Treatment options are limited, and median patient survival is only several months. Translation of new therapies is hindered by a lack of GBM models that fully recapitulate disease heterogeneity. Here, we characterize two human GBM models (U87-luc2, U251-RedFLuc). In vitro, both cell lines express similar levels of luciferase and show comparable sensitivity to temozolomide and lapatinib exposure. In vivo, however, the two GBM models recapitulate diferent aspects of the disease. U87-luc2 cells quickly grow into large, well-demarcated tumors; U251-RedFLuc cells form small, highly invasive tumors. Using a new method to assess …

Golightly : A Gpu Implementation Of The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, S. David Lively
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, optical circuit design is tested and validated using software which implement numerical modeling techniques such as Beam Propagation, Finite Element Analysis and the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. FDTD simulations require significant computational power. Existing installations may distribute the computational requirements across large clusters of high-powered servers. This approach entails significant expense in terms of hardware, staffing and software support which may be prohibitive for some research facilities and private-sector engineering firms. The application of modern programmable GPUs to problems in scientific visualization and computation has facilitated faster development cycles for a variety of industry segments including large dataset visualization, …

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
With the growing demand for high performance computing, we are pushing for higher performance integrated circuits at an ever faster rate. Recent advances in semiconductor production technology sees transistors with a 5 nm process devices being produced for consumer use. This enabled engineers to pack tens of billions of transistors in a package no larger than a fingernail. However, that brings up a problem that we have been long battling against. How can we get rid of the heat produced by these billions of transistors. The current electronic performance is bottle-necked by the ability of the package taking heat away …

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
The modern power system has witnessed an increasing penetration of distributed energy resources and modern loads with variable frequency drives. The increasing complexity brings great challenges to modern power system operations. Significant efforts have been made to develop more accurate power system operation and optimization methods. The tradeoff between computation and the model structure makes the problem nontrivial to solve and analyze. Enabled by the wide deployment of PMUs and advanced machine learning algorithms, we improve the conventional power system operation and optimization techniques by improving the accuracy of power system measurements, implementing new power system modeling structures, and performing …
Optimization Of Drive Time And Competitiveness In Sports League Design, Zhuo Chen
Optimization Of Drive Time And Competitiveness In Sports League Design, Zhuo Chen
Operations Research and Engineering Management Theses and Dissertations
Club sports, also known as recreational team sports, are prevalent in the metropolitan areas of United States nowadays. However, there is a key concern for organizers, which is how to reduce the time that players spend driving to and from matches while keeping league divisions competitive. We adopt a three-step approach to solve this problem. Initially, we analyze the drive time data between clubs’ locations to determine the geographic regions for the league. And then, clubs are assigned to divisions based on their rankings within in the league as well as their home facilities’ geographic regions. Finally, divisions are further …

Therefore, it has potential to be applied widely in the medical area, entertainment industry and for military applications. According to the first-generation 3D digital light photoactivatable dye display (3D Light PAD), N-phenyl spirolactam rhodamine B was used as photoactivatable compound that could be switched from non-fluorescent to fluorescent using ultraviolet light. However, the detailed mechanism, how other rhodamine derivatives would perform in 3D Light PAD, and what other factors in this system could improve the imaging quality remained unclear. …
A Proposed Analytical Framework For Resolving An Intra-Court Split On Claim Construction Ambiguity, Perez, Erik I.
A Proposed Analytical Framework For Resolving An Intra-Court Split On Claim Construction Ambiguity, Perez, Erik I.
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
The Federal Circuit was created to ensure patent law consistency by reducing inter-circuit splits.1 For decades, the Federal Circuit has oscillated between two standards associated with claim construction. This Article attempts to explain, analyze, and propose a solution to the intra-court split on claim construction. Part I examines the historical overview of patent litigation. This section briefly describes patent document sections, protectable patent rights, and patent interpretation shifts, from relying on the patent’s specification, to the patent’s claim. Part II examines current patent law. This section briefly describes how patent claims are interpreted and what role the specification aids in …
Dynamic Prediction For Alternating Recurrent Events Using A Semiparametric Joint Frailty Model, Jaehyeon Yun
Dynamic Prediction For Alternating Recurrent Events Using A Semiparametric Joint Frailty Model, Jaehyeon Yun
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Alternating recurrent events data arise commonly in health research; examples include hospital admissions and discharges of diabetes patients; exacerbations and remissions of chronic bronchitis; and quitting and restarting smoking. Recent work has involved formulating and estimating joint models for the recurrent event times considering non-negligible event durations. However, prediction models for transition between recurrent events are lacking. We consider the development and evaluation of methods for predicting future events within these models. Specifically, we propose a tool for dynamically predicting transition between alternating recurrent events in real time. Under a flexible joint frailty model, we derive the predictive probability of …

Phase Transformation Kinetics In Laser-Powder Bed Fused Fe-Cr-Ni-Al Maraging Stainless Steel, Richard Joseph Fabian
Phase Transformation Kinetics In Laser-Powder Bed Fused Fe-Cr-Ni-Al Maraging Stainless Steel, Richard Joseph Fabian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In the current study, cylindrical rods of Fe-Cr-Ni-Al maraging steel (with the brand name CX) are fabricated using the laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technique. The material is then analyzed using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique under continuous heating at different heating rates. The DSC results are employed to identify the heat flow peaks associated with the precipitation and austenite reversion phase transformations. The peaks are then analyzed and processed to determine the onset, peak, and end temperatures associated with each phase transformation. These results are used to calculate the degree of phase transformation under non-isothermal conditions and to evaluate …

Using Open-Access Lidar And Uas Imagery To Survey The Forests Of Shelby Farms Park, Aileen Lennon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Urban forests are invaluable to residents of cities who have limited access to green space, but these forests require continuous monitoring to ensure their health. With limited resources to conduct frequent monitoring on foot, remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) could offer a timely and cost-effective solution. Shelby Farms Park in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, boasts 1500 acres of forest, but a 2010 ground survey found Chinese Privet (Lingustrum sinense) was impeding forest health. In this study UAS imagery and publicly-available LiDAR were used to monitor the forests of this urban park and detect change. Two different methods …
Active Consideration Of Health And Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Christopher R. Gustafson
Active Consideration Of Health And Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Christopher R. Gustafson
Cornhusker Economics
Everyone can be positively influenced by effective interventions promoting healthier food choices. A handful of recent papers have documented positive impacts on dietary quality resulting from interventions that remind people to consider health through prompt messages or subtle priming in supermarkets and in controlled, online experiments. These studies have focused on the impact of reminders on nutritional quality rather than explaining how reminders work. An exception, Arslain, Gustafson, and Rose (2021), collected data on multiple elements of individuals' choice processes to trace the impact of reminders on decisions, showing that reminder messages led people to consider a healthier set of …
