Imitating Us Doctrine Cost Europe Its Heavy Combat Power, Bence Nemeth

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues that Europe’s loss of heavy combat power is primarily the result of doctrinal shifts influenced by the United States, rather than underfunding alone. Unlike existing research that focuses on defense budgets or burden-sharing, this study isolates the opportunity costs of adopting US-based expeditionary and counterinsurgency doctrines. Using force structure data for Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom (1990–2022), it conducts a counterfactual analysis of lost tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and heavy artillery pieces. The article shows that Europe’s shortfalls are doctrinal as much as fiscal and highlights the relevance of maintaining balance in future doctrinal choices.

The global requirement to mitigate environmental challenges demands a paradigm shift towards sustainable materials. Forest-based products, primarily derived from wood, present a promising path due to their abundance and renewability. However, enhancing their properties to meet modern demands remains a challenge. This review article, the first of its kind, explores the transformative potential of incorporating graphene and graphene-based nanomaterials into forest-based products to overcome the challenges associated with mass-scale applications. Graphene, a two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial, has emerged as a multifunctional additive with exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. The Clausewitzian trinity (people, government, and military—or passion, reason, and chance) can enhance existing scholarship and discussions about military professionalism by emphasizing the fundamental purpose of military forces. Specifically, managing chance incorporates elements of reducing uncertainty and applying creativity as individuals develop coup d’oeil. Junior personnel manage chance by reducing cognitive load while enhancing cognitive skills needed to quickly assess battlefield conditions as they progress to becoming senior leaders. This article contrasts these ideas against the various roles assigned to civil-military forces in the Clausewitzian trinity to emphasize professionalism in developing military leaders.

This article details the East German military’s extensive, innovative covert-propaganda program, which was designed to influence West German attitudes for almost two decades during the Cold War. Unlike existing scholarship that primarily addresses intelligence-led disinformation, this study exclusively analyzes military-led information warfare. The article uses previously classified East German military records to examine capabilities and tactics ranging from fake conscription notices to radio broadcasts. The findings offer contemporary US military planners and practitioners insight into the complexities of integrating information-warfare capabilities, measuring the effectiveness of propaganda, and understanding adversarial influence campaigns, with direct implications for current Joint Force planning and …

Carl von Clausewitz’s trinity represents a qualitative test for strategy in both theory and practice. With the trinity, Clausewitz transforms competing influences into a mark of theoretical quality. Synthesizing several translations of Clausewitz’s On War and interpretations by experts such as Hew Strachan, Antulio J. Echevarria II, and Frank G. Hoffman, this article suggests that Clausewitz believed that good theory encompasses and accounts for all fundamental forces of war, whereas bad theory emphasizes the extremes of one force. The trinity compels mandatory considerations for students of theory, war planners, and practitioners.

Methane Emissions From Underground Coal Mines, Marcelo Guzman, Thomas Parris, Stephen Greb, Cortland F. Eble, Sean Bailey

Methane emissions from Kentucky underground coal mines were measured using near-infrared spectrometers deployed on a vehicle, an airplane, and a small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS), offering insights into the effectiveness of these methods under real-world conditions. From 2021–2022, surveys covered 14 active, 4 inactive, and 4 abandoned mines across Kentucky’s coal-producing basins. Vehicle-based surveys at 13 active mines detected methane anomalies at 9 sites with anomaly lengths spanning tens to hundreds of meters and peak emissions of 665 ± 229 kg h–1 from two Cardinal mine fans. Molecular Origins Of Non-Frozen Water In Polyelectrolyte Brushes, Ali Dhinojwala, Saveen Jayaweera, Md Golam Kibria, George Mallinos

Polyelectrolyte brushes (PEBs) are promising coatings for reducing ice adhesion and regulating water freezing at interfaces, yet direct measurements of nonfrozen water retention at subzero temperatures remain scarce. Here, we investigate the freezing behavior of water confined in poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium) (PMETA) brushes with chloride, iodide, and sulfate counterions using a custom-built low-temperature attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy system. Furthermore, we quantify the fraction of water that was present within the brush that does not freeze as well as the changes in polymer volume fraction within the brush as a function of temperature. PURPOSE: To discuss the recent evidence that Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors can cause viral retinitis.

METHODS: A commentary on the case report in this issue and a review of cases in the literature.

RESULTS: A total of 6 cases have now been reported of cytomegalovirus retinitis associated with Jak inhibitors. Additionally, there was a case of bilateral toxoplasma retinitis and a case of herpetic scleritis.

DISCUSSION: It is important to be aware of the potential blinding complications associated with JAK inhibitors and if the patient complains of acute vision loss and/or floaters, the patient should be emergently referred to a …

The female power fantasy in which a powerless woman conquers a powerful man, thereby symbolically winning his status within the patriarchy for herself, is a classic feature of adult romance. It is visible, too, in YA romances like Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Sitting in tension with this inheritance from adult romance is the fact that YA is generally expected to be pedagogical, teaching young readers how to live and love well. In blending pedagogy with power fantasy and its associated escapism, To All the Boys essentially upcycles the tropes of adult romance for young …

Financial provision continues to factor significantly in how Black men perceive and enact fatherhood, influencing the extent and manner of their paternal engagement. The enduring representation of men primarily as financial providers constrains the generation and enactment of alternative modalities of fatherhood within families and society. This qualitative study explored how the everyday lived experiences of young Black men in Soweto, South Africa, influence their varied engagements with fatherhood as they navigate structural constraints to pursuing their ideal of fatherhood. Introduction: Uterine rupture at previable gestational ages is almost always treated with evacuation of the pregnancy, followed by uterine repair or hysterectomy. Case Presentation: A 40-year-old woman with one prior cesarean section presented at 22 weeks of gestation with an acute abdomen. Imaging noted hemoperitoneum with areas of bulging in the anterior uterine wall. Laparoscopy converted to a laparotomy through a midline incision, noted an actively bleeding 2 cm area of uterine rupture with protruding placental tissue. The uterine rupture was surgically closed with sutures. The patient was kept in the hospital for the remainder of her pregnancy. At 32 …

An Integrated Health and Care System in England with workforce priorities including staff wellbeing and equality, inclusion and diversity, together with the Foundation of Nursing Studies, wanted to develop a programme that supported the psychological wellbeing and development of resilience for nurses across the region.

Aim. To understand stress, resilience, and compassion satisfaction of nursing faculty during COVID-19 pandemic and identify factors related to their job satisfaction.

Background. The impact of COVID-19 on faculty stress, resilience, compassion satisfaction, and job satisfaction were unknown.

Methods. A mixed methods survey was distributed electronically to nursing faculty in the US. A convergent parallel mixed methods study design allowed us to measure and analyze quantitative and qualitative findings concurrently to support a fuller understanding of the results (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017).
