Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research

OBJECTIVE: To test whether providing relevant clinical trial registry information to peer reviewers evaluating trial manuscripts decreases discrepancies between registered and published trial outcomes.

DESIGN: Stepped wedge, cluster-randomised trial, with clusters comprised of eligible manuscripts submitted to each participating journal between 1 November 2018 and 31 October 2019.

SETTING: Thirteen medical journals.

PARTICIPANTS: Manuscripts were eligible for inclusion if they were submitted to a participating journal during the study period, presented results from the primary analysis of a clinical trial, and were peer reviewed.

INTERVENTIONS: During the control phase, there were no changes to pre-existing peer review practices. After journals …

Student Participation In A Dei Audit As High-Impact Practice, Veronica Wells, Michele Gibney, Mickel Paris, Corey Pfitzer Sep 2022

Student Participation In A Dei Audit As High-Impact Practice, Veronica Wells, Michele Gibney, Mickel Paris, Corey Pfitzer

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

During Spring 2021, eight students at the University of the Pacific participated in an internship where they performed a DEI audit of the library's book and music score collection. An internship is one documented type of High-Impact Practices and research studies show that High-Impact Practices lead to higher retention and graduation rates. Deep learning occurred as student interns participated in developing the methodology, evaluating book and music score collections, reading assigned articles pertaining to DEI in librarianship and publishing, and providing recommendations on closing identified collection gaps. To evaluate their learning, the interns were asked to complete three surveys at …

Observational Study Of The Clinical Performance Of A Public-Private Partnership National Referral Hospital Network In Lesotho: Do Improvements Last Over Time?, Nancy A. Scott, Jeanette L. Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Public-private partnerships (PPP) may increase healthcare quality but lack longitudinal evidence for success. The Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital (QMMH) in Lesotho is one of Africa’s first healthcare PPPs. We compare data from 2012 and 2018 on capacity, utilization, quality, and outcomes to understand if early documented successes have been sustained using the same measures over time. In this observational study using administrative and clinical data, we assessed beds, admissions, average length of stay (ALOS), outpatient visits, and patient outcomes. We measured triage time and crash cart stock through direct observation in 2013 and 2020. Operational hospital beds increased from 390 …

Lesion Environments Direct Transplanted Neural Progenitors Towards A Wound Repair Astroglial Phenotype In Mice., T M O'Shea, Y Ao, S Wang, A L Wollenberg, J H Kim, R A Ramos Espinoza, Anne M. Czechanski, Laura G. Reinholdt, T J Deming, M V Sofroniew

Faculty Research 2022

Neural progenitor cells (NPC) represent potential cell transplantation therapies for CNS injuries. To understand how lesion environments influence transplanted NPC fate in vivo, we derived NPC expressing a ribosomal protein-hemagglutinin tag (RiboTag) for transcriptional profiling of transplanted NPC. Here, we show that NPC grafted into uninjured mouse CNS generate cells that are transcriptionally similar to healthy astrocytes and oligodendrocyte lineages. In striking contrast, NPC transplanted into subacute CNS lesions after stroke or spinal cord injury in mice generate cells that share transcriptional, morphological and functional features with newly proliferated host astroglia that restrict inflammation and fibrosis and isolate lesions from …

Epilepsy Risk Following Bariatric Surgery For Weight Loss, Tresah Antaya, Amna Qureshi, Lucie Richard, Salima Z. Shariff, Ahmad Elnahas, Jorge G. Burneo Sep 2022

Epilepsy Risk Following Bariatric Surgery For Weight Loss, Tresah Antaya, Amna Qureshi, Lucie Richard, Salima Z. Shariff, Ahmad Elnahas, Jorge G. Burneo

Neuroepidemiology Research Unit Publications

Background and objectives: A previous study reported finding that epilepsy risk is elevated following bariatric surgery for weight loss; however, this association has not been adequately explored. Our objectives were to (1) estimate the risk of epilepsy following bariatric surgery for weight loss relative to a non-surgical cohort of patients with an obesity diagnosis, and (2) identify epilepsy risk factors among bariatric surgery recipients.

Methods: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using linked health administrative databases in Ontario, Canada. Participants were accrued between July 1, 2010, and December 31, 2016, and followed until December 31, 2019. All Ontario residents …

Limits To Coseismic Landslides Triggered By Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquakes, Alex R.R. Grant, William T. Struble, Sean R. Lahusen Sep 2022

Limits To Coseismic Landslides Triggered By Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquakes, Alex R.R. Grant, William T. Struble, Sean R. Lahusen

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Landslides are a significant hazard and dominant feature throughout the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. However, the hazard and risk posed by coseismic landslides triggered by great Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquakes is highly uncertain due to a lack of local and global data. Despite a wealth of other geologic evidence for past earthquakes on the Cascadia Subduction Zone, no landslides have been definitively linked to such earthquakes, even in areas otherwise highly susceptible to failure. While shallow landslides may not leave a lasting topographical signature in the landscape, there are thousands of deep-seated landslides in Cascadia, and these deposits …
