Seasonal Habitat Selection By American White Pelicans, Frederick L. Cunningham, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King Sep 2022

Seasonal Habitat Selection By American White Pelicans, Frederick L. Cunningham, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Resource utilization strategies of avian migrants are a major concern for conservation and management. Understanding seasonal habitat selection by migratory birds helps us explain the ongoing continental declines of migratory bird populations. Our objective was to compare the secondorder and third-order habitat selection by the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos; hereafter pelican) between the breeding and non-breeding grounds. We tested the Lack hypothesis that habitat selection by migratory birds is stronger on the breeding grounds than on the nonbreeding grounds. We used random-effect Dirichlet-multinomial models to estimate the second-order habitat selection between the seasons with the GPS locations …

A Lagrangian Thin-Shell Finite Element Method For Interacting Particles On Fluid Membranes, Sanjay Dharmavaram, Xinran Wan, Luigi E. Perotti

Faculty Journal Articles

A recurring motif in soft matter and biophysics is modeling the mechanics of interacting particles on fluid membranes. One of the main outstanding challenges in these applications is the need to model the strong coupling between the substrate deformation and the particles’ positions as the latter freely move on the former. This work presents a thin-shell finite element formulation based on subdivision surfaces to compute equilibrium configurations of a thin fluid shell with embedded particles. We use a variational Lagrangian framework to couple the mechanics of the particles and the substrate without having to resort to ad hoc constraints to …

Transcriptional And Immune Landscape Of Cardiac Sarcoidosis, Jing Liu, Pan Ma, Lulu Lai, Ana Villanueva, Andrew Koenig, Gregory R. Bean, Dawn E. Bowles, Carolyn Glass, Michael Watson, Kory J. Lavine, Chieh-Yu Lin

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Cardiac involvement is an important determinant of mortality among sarcoidosis patients. Although granulomatous inflammation is a hallmark finding in cardiac sarcoidosis, the precise immune cell populations that comprise the granuloma remain unresolved. Furthermore, it is unclear how the cellular and transcriptomic landscape of cardiac sarcoidosis differs from other inflammatory heart diseases.

METHODS: We leveraged spatial transcriptomics (GeoMx digital spatial profiler) and single-nucleus RNA sequencing to elucidate the cellular and transcriptional landscape of cardiac sarcoidosis. Using GeoMX digital spatial profiler technology, we compared the transcriptomal profile of CD68

RESULTS: Despite overlapping histological features, spatial transcriptomics identified transcriptional signatures and associated …

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CA-CRE) are an important threat.

METHODS: In CRACKLE-2, we defined patients with CA-CRE as admitted from home, without pre-existing conditions, and a positive culture within 48 h of admission. Healthcare-associated CRE (HA-CRE) were those with the lowest likelihood of community acquisition, not admitted from home and cultured >48 h after admission. Specific genetic markers in carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae were evaluated through random forest modelling.

RESULTS: CA-CRE and HA-CRE were detected in 83 (10%) and 208 (26%) of 807 patients. No significant differences were observed in bacterial species or strain type distribution. K. pneumoniae (204/291, 70%) was …

DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are linked to neurodegeneration and senescence. However, it is not clear how DSB-bearing neurons influence neuroinflammation associated with neurodegeneration. Here, we characterize DSB-bearing neurons from the CK-p25 mouse model of neurodegeneration using single-nucleus, bulk, and spatial transcriptomic techniques. DSB-bearing neurons enter a late-stage DNA damage response marked by nuclear factor κB (NFκB)-activated senescent and antiviral immune pathways. In humans, Alzheimer's disease pathology is closely associated with immune activation in excitatory neurons. Spatial transcriptomics reveal that regions of CK-p25 brain tissue dense with DSB-bearing neurons harbor signatures of inflammatory microglia, which is ameliorated by NFκB knockdown in …

Modeling Multivariate Age-Related Imaging Variables With Dependencies, Shuo Chen Sep 2022

Modeling Multivariate Age-Related Imaging Variables With Dependencies, Shuo Chen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Neuroimaging techniques have been increasingly used to understand the neural biology of aging brains. The neuroimaging variables from distinct brain locations and modalities can exhibit age-related patterns that reflect localized neural decline. However, it is a challenge to identify the impacts of risk factors (eg, mental disorders) on multivariate imaging variables while simultaneously accounting for the dependence structure and nonlinear age trajectories using existing tools. We propose a mixed-effects model to address this challenge by building random effects based on the latent brain aging status. We develop computationally efficient algorithms to estimate the parameters of new random effects. The simulations …

Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) may be potential adjuvant immunotherapy for COVID-19 patients. In this work, we assessed gene expression profiles associated with the IFN-γ pathway in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Employing a case-control study from SARS-CoV-2-positive and -negative patients, we identified IFN-γ-associated pathways to be enriched in positive patients. Bioinformatics analyses showed upregulation of MAP2K6, CBL, RUNX3, STAT1, and JAK2 in COVID-19-positive vs. -negative patients. A positive correlation was observed between STAT1/JAK2, which varied alongside the patient's viral load. Expression of MX1, MX2, ISG15, and OAS1 (four well-known IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs)) …

Putting Your Mouth Where Your Money Goes! “Where” And “How” To Communicate To Maximize The Impact Of Corporate Social Programs, Christopher Agyapong Siaw, David Sugianto Lie, Rahul Govind

Plymouth Business School

The purpose of this study is to examine how corporate communication of their social programs on their websites affects the ratings of those programs by independent rating agencies. Firms expend resources on corporate social programs (CSPs) to promote their corporate social responsibility and sustainability credentials. Stakeholders, however, often respond to such “self-promotion” with skepticism because they believe that there are inconsistencies between corporate claims and actions. This research draws on attribution theory as a framework to examine how the perceived CSP performance of firms by uncontrollable sources are affected when firms disseminate CSP information on firm websites, i.e. a controllable …

Power Extraction From Floating Elastic Plates, S Michele, F Buriani, E Renzi Sep 2022

Power Extraction From Floating Elastic Plates, S Michele, F Buriani, E Renzi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We present a novel mathematical model to investigate the extraction of wave power by flexible elastic floaters. The model is based on the method of dry modes, coupled with a matched eigenfunction expansion. Our model results compare satisfactorily with preliminary data obtained from a demonstrator device, developed at the University of Groningen. We show that the role of elasticity is to increase the number of resonant frequencies with respect to a rigid body, which has a positive effect on wave power output. The mathematical model is then extended to irregular incident waves, described by a JONSWAP spectrum. Our results show …

Heterogeneous Learning Method Of Ensemble Classifiers For Identification And Classification Of Power Quality Events And Fault Transients In Wind Power Integrated Microgrid, Arangarajan Vinayagam, Veerapandiyan Veerasamy, Mohd Tariq, Asma Aziz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper proposes heterogeneous based ensemble Classifiers (voting and stacking method) to identify and classify different power system disturbances (power quality (PQ), faults, transients, and wind power variation) in wind integrated microgrid network. In the pre-processing stage of classification, a Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) technique is applied to extract the features from power system disturbance signals. The classification process for the proposed ensemble models involves two levels of classification. At the first level, the extracted features from the simulated power system events are used to learn the different individual base classifiers (logistic regression (LR), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and J48 Decision …

The Effects Of Perceived Destination Restorative Qualities On Tourists’ Self-Identity: A Tale Of Two Destinations, Xianyang Hu, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Ganghua Chen, Feifei Hua

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Isolation and anomie caused by the modern life has created multiple identity threats. Tourists’ destination experience has long been considered as a unique way of identity construction. However, little research has investigated whether and how environmental restoration qualities in the tourism context can possibly reinforce self-identity and counteract the effect of identity confusion. Guided by the Attention Restoration Theory, this study aims to develop and test a model to examine the relationships between the dimensions of perceived destination restorative qualities (PDRQs) and tourist self-identity with two tourist samples in China collected in two distinctive destinations (Sample 1, n = 361; …

Anomaly Detection In Cybersecurity Datasets Via Cooperative Co-Evolution-Based Feature Selection, Bazlur A. N. M. Rashid, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Leslie F. Sikos, Paul Haskell-Dowland

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Anomaly detection from Big Cybersecurity Datasets is very important; however, this is a very challenging and computationally expensive task. Feature selection (FS) is an approach to remove irrelevant and redundant features and select a subset of features, which can improve the machine learning algorithms’ performance. In fact, FS is an effective preprocessing step of anomaly detection techniques. This article’s main objective is to improve and quantify the accuracy and scalability of both supervised and unsupervised anomaly detection techniques. In this effort, a novel anomaly detection approach using FS, called Anomaly Detection Using Feature Selection (ADUFS), has been introduced. Experimental analysis …

Wealth At The End Of Days: The Importance Of Poverty In 4qinstruction, Eve Woogen

Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics

One of the recognized genres represented in the Qumran scrolls is that of wisdom texts which, like the wisdom books of the Hebrew Bible, draw upon literary and thematic elements of the older Near Eastern wisdom tradition. Primary characteristics of this genre include a focus on humanity’s place in creation, and teachings related to improvement through the pursuit of wisdom. Many of these elements are clearly present in the texts from Qumran known collectively as 4QInstruction (or Sapiential Work A). While these writings describe a secular rather than sectarian setting and follow a traditional instructional format, they also include distinctly …

Fighting Mortality: Acts Of Performance In The Communal Meal And War Scroll, Gwyneth J. Shanks

Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics

Since their initial discovery in the late 1940s, the Dead Sea Scrolls continue to ignite the imaginations of scholars and generate an extensive, and ever growing, amount of scholarship. While scholars have examined different components of both the site of Qumran and the scrolls in reference to purity, it is on the communal meal and the War Scroll that this article focuses. This article proposes a connection between the sectarian communal meal and their eschatology, based not upon previously established similar purity laws, but rather the parallel desire to combat mortality evident in the purity laws of the communal meal …

Loveliness Far Above Them All: Women And Wives Of The Genesis Apocryphon, Daniel M. Picus Sep 2022

Loveliness Far Above Them All: Women And Wives Of The Genesis Apocryphon, Daniel M. Picus

Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics

The retelling of the bible is a common method of biblical interpretation within the Dead Sea Scrolls library. Stories, events, ideas, and characters are re-imagined by the authors of texts who pay homage to what we consider the “canonical” biblical story. In the process, characters and stories are reinterpreted. This reinterpretation provides insight into a community’s understanding of itself, and of the roles that its members play. I am interested in the re-imagined women of Genesis that appear in the Genesis Apocryphon. I will compare both of them (Bitenosh and Sarai) to their counterparts in the book of Genesis, and …
