Results For The South Carolina Teacher Exit Survey From The 2021-2022 Pilot Administration, Tammiee Dickenson, Thomas Hodges, Joshua Watts, Adam Brown, Xumei Fan

Reports

SC-TEACHER’s second administration of the South Carolina Teacher Exit Survey provides insights from ten school districts regarding reasons teachers stay in, move from, or leave the profession. While the number of statewide vacancies is a helpful data point, perhaps more important to addressing specific policy and strategic needs is gathering information that presents a nuanced understanding of why educators make the decisions they make. These survey results offer insights into factors that influence teachers’ decisions.

The survey will be expanded to provide an opportunity for all South Carolina school districts to participate in spring 2023.

Nondisclosure Of Supervisee Disagreement To Supervisor Feedback: A Qualitative Study, Elizabeth A. Tinsley Oct 2022

Nondisclosure Of Supervisee Disagreement To Supervisor Feedback: A Qualitative Study, Elizabeth A. Tinsley

Dissertations (1934 -)

Feedback has been described by researchers and supervisors as an important tool of clinical supervision contributing to supervisees’ development (Hein et al., 2011; Jaworski & Kohli, 1991; Nelson et al., 2008; O’Donovan et al., 2011; Sapyta et al., 2005; Worthington, 2006). Because feedback often comes from one perspective, generally the supervisor’s, it seems reasonable to expect supervisors and supervisees may see feedback differently. This difference in perspectives may foster disagreement between the supervisor and supervisee. Not everyone is comfortable discussing disagreement, nor even conflict, which can lead to larger difficulties in supervision. The act of censoring information provided to supervisors …

The Effect Of Specimen Thickness On The Lüders Phenomena In Aisi 1524 Steel Alloy, Joost H. Van Der Heijde Oct 2022

The Effect Of Specimen Thickness On The Lüders Phenomena In Aisi 1524 Steel Alloy, Joost H. Van Der Heijde

Theses

At certain temperatures, strain rates and slender geometries, low carbon steels, as well as some aluminum, magnesium and nickel-based alloys, exhibit plastic flow instability at the onset of their respective yield points, known as the Lüders phenomena. Such phenomenon is recognized by a distinct yield point and subsequent plateau on the stress-strain curve. This thesis aims to investigate the effect of the sample’s thickness on the Lüders phenomena in AISI 1524 hot-rolled steel alloy. Sixteen samples were machined from hot-rolled plates and uniaxial testing in conjunction with digital image correlation were performed to gain insight and quantify the Lüders band’s …

Predicting Electrical Faults In Power Distribution Network, Ahmad Adel Bin Sulaiman Oct 2022

Predicting Electrical Faults In Power Distribution Network, Ahmad Adel Bin Sulaiman

Theses

Electricity is becoming increasingly important in modern civilization, and as a result, the emphasis on and use of power infrastructure is gradually expanding. Simultaneously, investment and distribution modes are shifting from the large-scale centralized generation of electricity and sheer consumption to decentralized generators and extremely sophisticated clients. This transformation puts further strain on old infrastructure, necessitating significant expenditures in future years to ensure a consistent supply. Subsequent technical and prediction technologies can help to maximize the use of the current grid while lowering the probability of faults. This study discusses some of the local grid difficulties as well as a …

Fraud Detection In Financial Services Using Machine Learning, Khalifa Alsenaani Oct 2022

Fraud Detection In Financial Services Using Machine Learning, Khalifa Alsenaani

Theses

The banking industry is an important part of modern actions as it manages the movement of funds between different parties. However, this area is synonymous with some cases of fraud where people are being swindled their money, illegal transactions are being made and others.

The complexity of ensuring that transactions stay legitimate has since made it almost impossible to regulate fraud in this industry correctly. This report presents an approach that utilizes Machine Learning techniques to build a model that detects fraudulent transactions and flags them. The approach utilizes a dataset that contains a collection of observation points on transactions …

Looking Through Their Lenses: An Analysis Of Virginia Environmental Nonprofits' Roles And Challenges In Shoreline Management For Coastal Resilience, Taiwo C. Olanrewaju Lasisi Oct 2022

Looking Through Their Lenses: An Analysis Of Virginia Environmental Nonprofits' Roles And Challenges In Shoreline Management For Coastal Resilience, Taiwo C. Olanrewaju Lasisi

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

Environmental nonprofit organizations have emerged to attend to the environmental needs of individuals and communities. Some of these needs are usually those that have been neglected, given insufficient attention, or cannot be singularly handled by the government. In advocating for coastal resilience, environmental nonprofits have been identified as actors who address coastal issues like sea-level rise, flooding, and shoreline management.

Shoreline management involves building setbacks and formulating short and long-term defense strategies such as building living shorelines, ripraps, bulkheads, and tree plantings. These strategies formed the basis of coastal defense in coastal zones. Shoreline management is a significant area of …

Somatostatin Regulates Circadian Clock Function And Photic Processing, Deborah A. M. Joye Oct 2022

Somatostatin Regulates Circadian Clock Function And Photic Processing, Deborah A. M. Joye

Dissertations (1934 -)

Daily and seasonal rhythms are programmed by neural circuits that use daily timing and duration of light to anticipate predictable environmental changes (i.e., day length, temperature, food, predation). Daily and annual changes in light modulate human health to produce both positive and negative effects, but neural mechanisms underlying light-driven changes in the brain remain poorly understood. In mammals, light is processed and encoded by the brain’s central clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN also encodes day length (i.e., photoperiod) to regulate annual fluctuations in mammalian physiology, but it’s not clear precisely how the SCN network achieves this. One signal …

Mediating Effects Of Positive Thinking On Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Resilience In Nurse Leaders, Jay Randall Gottschalk Oct 2022

Mediating Effects Of Positive Thinking On Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Resilience In Nurse Leaders, Jay Randall Gottschalk

Dissertations (1934 -)

Nurses in leadership positions are encountering increasing psychological stressors both due to the nature of their work and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care. Using the lens of the Metatheory of Resilience and Resiliency, some of these stressors (burnout and secondary traumatic stress) and protective factors (compassion satisfaction and resilience) were explored. This exploration involved the use of a Bayesian structural equation model that was evaluated to determine the nature of the relationships between these stressors and protective factors in nurse leaders. In addition, the mediating effects of positive thinking on these relationships was also evaluated. Reaching …

Relationship Of Spirituality, Self-Awareness, And Effective Leadership Among Lay Catholic High School Leaders In Nigeria, Emmanuel I. Ugwejeh Oct 2022

Relationship Of Spirituality, Self-Awareness, And Effective Leadership Among Lay Catholic High School Leaders In Nigeria, Emmanuel I. Ugwejeh

Dissertations (1934 -)

First, this research measured the spirituality, self-awareness, and leadership effectiveness of 70 lay Catholic high school leaders in Nigeria to gain insights into these leaders' self-awareness, spirituality, and effectiveness. Second, using multiple regression analysis, it also tried to determine if an association exists between lay-Catholic high school leaders’ self-rated spirituality, self-rated self-awareness, supervisor-rated self-awareness, and supervisor-rated effectiveness of the same Catholic high school leaders. Third, it also tried to determine if self-rated self-awareness, self-rated spirituality, and supervisors’ rated self-awareness would together predict leadership effectiveness among the same lay Catholic high school leaders. The study suggests mixed results. Whereas the supervisor-rated …

Bit-Flip Aware Data Structures For Phase Change Memory, Arockia David Roy Kulandai Oct 2022

Bit-Flip Aware Data Structures For Phase Change Memory, Arockia David Roy Kulandai

Dissertations (1934 -)

Big, non-volatile, byte-addressable, low-cost, and fast non-volatile memories like Phase Change Memory are appearing in the marketplace. They have the capability to unify both memory and storage and allow us to rethink the present memory hierarchy. An important draw-back to Phase Change Memory is limited write-endurance. In addition, Phase Change Memory shares with other Non-Volatile Random Access Memories an asym- metry in the energy costs of writes and reads. Best use of Non-Volatile Random Access Memories limits the number of times a Non-Volatile Random Access Memory cell changes contents, called a bit-flip. While the future of main memory is still …

Latinas’ Use Of Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism, Ashley Lauren Faytol Oct 2022

Latinas’ Use Of Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism, Ashley Lauren Faytol

Dissertations (1934 -)

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread public health concern with consequences that negatively impact many areas of survivors’ functioning (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017, 2019; Ellsberg et al., 2008; Gorde et al., 2004; Kelly, 2010a). The negative impacts of IPV are more severe for Latinas than their White counterparts (e.g., Bonomi et al., 2009; Kelly, 2010b; Stockman et al., 2015), causing IPV to be considered a health disparity within the Latina community (Caetano et al., 2005). While spirituality has been shown to be an effective coping mechanism for many stressors in Latinas’ lives, it has not …

Designing A Patient-Centered Clinical Workflow To Assess Cyberbully Experiences Of Youths In The U.S. Healthcare System, Fayika Farhat Nova Oct 2022

Designing A Patient-Centered Clinical Workflow To Assess Cyberbully Experiences Of Youths In The U.S. Healthcare System, Fayika Farhat Nova

Dissertations (1934 -)

Cyberbullying or online harassment is often defined as when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses, mistreats, or makes fun of others aiming to scare, anger or shame them using electronic devices [296]. Youths experiencing cyberbullying report higher levels of anxiety and depression, mental distress, suicide thoughts, and substance abuse than their non-bullied peers [360, 605, 261, 354]. Even though bullying is associated with significant health problems, to date, very little youth anti-bullying efforts are initiated and directed in clinical settings. There is presently no standardized procedure or workflow across health systems for systematically assessing cyberbullying or other equally dangerous online activities …

Application Of Nanodisc Technology To A Membrane-Bound P450: Functional Studies And Resonance Raman Studies On Cyp51a1, Yuanqi Jing Oct 2022

Application Of Nanodisc Technology To A Membrane-Bound P450: Functional Studies And Resonance Raman Studies On Cyp51a1, Yuanqi Jing

Dissertations (1934 -)

Membrane-bound cytochrome P450s are highly insoluble and tend to form aggregations in aqueous solution due to its hydrophobic N-terminal transmembrane anchor. The traditional methodology of studying membrane-bound proteins depends on the use of detergent; however, detergent solubilization of membrane P450s does not satisfy many criteria of biochemical and biophysical studies on membrane proteins. A well-developed Nanodisc technology has been proven to be an extraordinarily efficient method of studying membrane-bound P450s. The human sterol 14-demethylases (CYP51A1) are membrane-bound P450 enzymes that catalyze oxidative removal of the C32 methyl group of lanosterol by first forming an alcohol, then an aldehyde, and finally …

Highly Sensitive Sensor System Using Composite Sensor Coatings For Identification Of Chemical Isomers, Nicholas David Post Oct 2022

Highly Sensitive Sensor System Using Composite Sensor Coatings For Identification Of Chemical Isomers, Nicholas David Post

Dissertations (1934 -)

Direct liquid-phase sensing of aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and m-, p-, o-xylene (BTEX) is of significant interest in environmental monitoring applications due to their severe impact on human health, and their prevalence in the products of the petrochemical industry. Moreover, each of these chemicals, including each xylene isomer, is utilized for petrochemical applications for which there are not currently viable replacements or cost-effective substitutions. As a result, isomer-specific identification is an important process-control capability for a number of industrial chemical separations, a family of processes that amounts to approximately 15% of total global energy consumption. In this …

The Ventral Hippocampus Dynamically Regulates Amygdala Encoding And Learned Fear, Matthew Richard Herbst Oct 2022

The Ventral Hippocampus Dynamically Regulates Amygdala Encoding And Learned Fear, Matthew Richard Herbst

Dissertations (1934 -)

The nervous system has evolved a set of survival circuits optimized to respond to environmental threats. Adaptive threat responding requires learning to predict when and where a threat may occur based on available cues. Such learning depends on a distributed network of brain structures, but there is much we do not understand about how these brain areas interact to support fear memory. Addressing this gap is crucial for understanding anxiety- and fear-related disorders as dysfunction in fear learning networks is implicated in the development and persistence of pathological fear states. In my dissertation work, I used a rodent model of …

Kinetics Of Isotope-Labeled Pathways In The Ozone Forming Recombination Reaction, Elizaveta Grushnikova Oct 2022

Kinetics Of Isotope-Labeled Pathways In The Ozone Forming Recombination Reaction, Elizaveta Grushnikova

Dissertations (1934 -)

The ozone layer in Earth’s atmosphere is unique and plays a vital role in the development of life. Studying the mechanism behind ozone formation helps us understand the development of our planet’s atmosphere. We focus here on the anomalous mass-independent isotope effect.1 In 1981, Mauersberger et al.2 performed an experiment using weather balloons, resulting in the discovery of the anomalous isotope effect for ozone formation. Since then, other chemists have continued to investigate the theory behind this phenomenon. To understand the nature of the isotope effect, we must consider all stages of ozone formation. The basic reaction for ozone formation …

A Study On The Hierarchical Control Structure Of The Islanded Microgrid, Fahad Shumran Alshammari Oct 2022

A Study On The Hierarchical Control Structure Of The Islanded Microgrid, Fahad Shumran Alshammari

Dissertations (1934 -)

The microgrid is essential in promoting the power system’s resilience through its ability to host small-scale DG units. Furthermore, the microgrid can isolate itself during main grid faults and supply its demands. However, islanded operation of the microgrid is challenging due to difficulties in frequency and voltage control. In islanded mode, grid-forming units collaborate to control the frequency and voltage. A hierarchical control structure employing the droop control technique provides these control objectives in three consecutive levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. However, challenges associated with DG units in the vicinity of distribution networks limit the effectiveness of the islanded mode …

Graph Neural Networks For Inverse Problems With Flexible Meshes, William Herzberg Oct 2022

Graph Neural Networks For Inverse Problems With Flexible Meshes, William Herzberg

Dissertations (1934 -)

This thesis addresses the electrical impedance tomography (EIT) image reconstruction problem where samples may have irregular discretizations and presents two, new, learned reconstruction algorithms which leverage a graph framework. These new frameworks consider the irregular, non-uniform data as a graph thus allowing graph neural networks to be applied directly to the data defined over irregular meshes. Currently in imaging, convolutional neural networks are used most frequently in learned methods because they are spatially invariant and have the ability to leverage localized information. In addition, many images are represented by rows and columns of uniformly sized pixels which can easily be …

The Environmental, Social, Governance (Esg) Debate Emerges From The Soil Of Climate Denial, Lawrence J. Trautman, Neal Newman Oct 2022

The Environmental, Social, Governance (Esg) Debate Emerges From The Soil Of Climate Denial, Lawrence J. Trautman, Neal Newman

Faculty Scholarship

It has been almost six decades since Rachel Carson’s ominous warning of pending environmental disaster. During 2019 the United Nations requested urgent action from world leaders, given that “just over a decade is all that remains to stop irreversible damage from climate change.” With every passing year, damage resulting from destructive climate change causes increased pain, suffering, death and massive property loss. During 2020 and 2021 alone, severe weather events have included: destructive fires in California; record breaking freeze, power outage, and threat to the electrical grid in Texas; continuation of disruptive drought in U.S. Western states; and record-breaking high …

Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (Spacs) And The Sec, Neal Newman, Lawrence J. Trautman Oct 2022

Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (Spacs) And The Sec, Neal Newman, Lawrence J. Trautman

Faculty Scholarship

Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) are simply enterprises that raise money from the public with the intention of purchasing an existing business and becoming publicly traded in the securities markets. If the SPAC is successful in raising money and the acquisition takes place, the target company takes the SPAC’s place on a stock exchange in a transaction that resembles a public offering. Also known as “blank-check” or “reverse merger” companies, this process avoids many of the pitfalls of a traditional initial public offering.

During late 2020 and 2021 an unprecedented surge in the popularity and issuance of Special Purpose Acquisition …

Legal Perspectives On The Streaming Industry: The United States, Irene Calboli

Faculty Scholarship

In the past decade, streaming has become one of the most popular formats of “consuming” entertainment and other content—from music to videos, and concerts, sports, conferences, and other events. In the United States, the majority of consumers subscribe to one or more streaming services today. Popular streaming services include famous platforms such as Spotify, Netflix, Apple Music, or Apple TV, Pandora, YouTube, and more. Beside subscription-based services, several of these platforms offer “freemium,” or ad-paid version of their services, which allow users to access content with advertisements for free. As elaborated in several industry reports and other publications, the rise …
