Atomic And Molecular Layer Deposition As Surface Engineering Techniques For Emerging Alkali Metal Rechargeable Batteries, Matthew Sullivan, Peng Tang, Xiangbo Meng Oct 2022

Atomic And Molecular Layer Deposition As Surface Engineering Techniques For Emerging Alkali Metal Rechargeable Batteries, Matthew Sullivan, Peng Tang, Xiangbo Meng

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Alkali metals (lithium, sodium, and potassium) are promising as anodes in emerging rechargeable batteries, ascribed to their high capacity or abundance. Two commonly experienced issues, however, have hindered them from commercialization: the dendritic growth of alkali metals during plating and the formation of solid electrolyte interphase due to contact with liquid electrolytes. Many technical strategies have been developed for addressing these two issues in the past decades. Among them, atomic and molecular layer deposition (ALD and MLD) have been drawing more and more efforts, owing to a series of their unique capabilities. ALD and MLD enable a variety of inorganic, …

Background: Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are cellular structures connecting cell membranes and mediating intercellular communication. TNTs are manually identified and counted by a trained investigator; however, this process is time-intensive. We therefore sought to develop an automated approach for quantitative analysis of TNTs. Methods: We used a convolutional neural network (U-Net) deep learning model to segment phase contrast microscopy images of both cancer and non-cancer cells. Our method was composed of preprocessing and model development. We developed a new preprocessing method to label TNTs on a pixel-wise basis. Two sequential models were employed to detect TNTs. First, we identified the regions …

Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic …

How Do Destination Negative Events Trigger Tourists’ Perceived Betrayal And Boycott? The Moderating Role Of Relationship Quality, Lujun Su, Bocong Jia, Yinghua Huang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study presented and tested a conceptual model that examined how a negative event at a tourism destination influenced perceived betrayal and boycott among tourists. A mixed method approach with three studies was adopted to verify the proposed hypotheses. In Study 1, using Weibo microblogging platform data, we evaluated the impacts of a negative event on tourists' perception of betrayal and intentions to participate in a tourism boycott. In Study 2, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the relationships among the negative event, perceptions of betrayal, and propensity for a tourism boycott. In Study 3, an additional experimental study …

Sleep inertia is the brief period of performance impairment and reduced alertness experienced after waking, especially from slow-wave sleep. We assessed the efficacy of polychromatic short-wavelength-enriched light to improve vigilant attention, alertness and mood immediately after waking from slow-wave sleep at night. Twelve participants (six female, 23.3 ± 4.2 years) maintained an actigraphy-confirmed sleep schedule of 8.5 hr for 5 nights, and 5 hr for 1 night prior to an overnight laboratory visit. In the laboratory, participants were awakened from slow-wave sleep, and immediately exposed to either dim, red ambient light (control) or polychromatic short-wavelength-enriched light (light) for 1 hr …

The Debate Surrounding The Company Purpose In The Post-Pandemic Age, Leon Anidjar

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The recent COVID-19 pandemic crisis produced many creative responses to confront its adverse results. Many companies worldwide were required to adopt innovative thinking by altering their business activities and revising their entire supply chain by attracting different types of resources delivered by various stakeholders. This Article explores the implications of this fundamental change on central theoretical assumptions of corporate governance. It articulates a new stakeholders-resources theory that explores governance norms as part of the firm's quest for inputs required to generate a competitive advantage. It applies this analytical framework in the debate on corporate purpose. This Article argues that companies …

The Law And Finance Of Infrastructure Investment, Daisuke Asaoka Oct 2022

The Law And Finance Of Infrastructure Investment, Daisuke Asaoka

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

Institutional design facilitates the investment of private capital in infrastructure. The Article deals with concessions, which have been a major format for infrastructure privatization in Japan since their legislation in 2011. It argues that the Japanese government, faced with mounting public debt, walks a thin line between attracting private capital and securing public interest in infrastructure under private operation. By comparing concessions with stock sales, the mainstream form of privatization until the legislation, the Article shows that while concessions have advantages in terms of economics and public interest control, they may hinder the strategic growth of private enterprises by limiting …

Natural Resource Governance In Qing China: Lineage Institutions And The Making Of Common Property Regimes, Jason Jia-Xi Wu Oct 2022

Natural Resource Governance In Qing China: Lineage Institutions And The Making Of Common Property Regimes, Jason Jia-Xi Wu

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

Historically, common property is one of the dominant forms of ownership through which natural resources-e.g., forests, pastures, and fisheries-are managed. However, their decline across societies due to marketization and privatization has prompted intense debates. This Article seeks to answer the following questions: (1) Why did some common property regimes dissipate quickly, while others resisted the forces of privatization for generations? (2) What explains the divergent trajectories that societies took in governing common resources? Building on the classic Coasean and Demsetzian law-andeconomics principles, this Article highlights two additional dimensions-institutional capacity and social embeddedness of propertyto explain how "hidden" social costs impacted …

Sanctions, Financial Regulation, And Crypto In Latin America, Camilla Oliva Oct 2022

Sanctions, Financial Regulation, And Crypto In Latin America, Camilla Oliva

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note examines the intersection of corruption, financial regulation, and cryptocurrency in Latin America, arguing that U.S. sanctions and the lack of effective financial regulation have inadvertently enabled corruption in the region. It explores how cryptocurrencies, while offering potential solutions to financial instability, are also exploited by corrupt actors and governments to circumvent sanctions and regulatory frameworks. The analysis highlights the dual role of cryptocurrencies as both a tool for financial inclusion and a means of evading accountability, particularly in countries like Venezuela and El Salvador.

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

Understanding soil systems that characterize a region is critical to natural resource management. However, the knowledge gained through intensive study of local soil systems, which takes place annually as part of collegiate soil judging contests, is often poorly preserved for future use. In this study, field descriptions and laboratory data for 16 soil profiles described for the 2019 Region 5 Soil Judging Contest were used to characterize the soil system of the Central Nebraska Loess Hills and Central Loess Plains. Three landscape components of this soil system were analyzed: the loess uplands and rainwater basins, the transitional zone, and bottomlands. …

Natural Enemies And Biological Control Of Stink Bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) In North America, Blessing Ademokoya, Kacie Athey, John R. Ruberson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Stink bugs comprise a significant and costly pest complex for numerous crops in the United States, including row crops, vegetables, and tree fruits and nuts. Most management relies on the use of broad-spectrum and disruptive insecticides with high human and environmental risks associated with them. Growing concerns about pesticide resistance in stink bugs are forcing pest managers to explore safer and more sustainable options. Here, we review the diverse suite of natural enemies of stink bugs in the US, noting that the egg and the late nymphal and adult stages of stink bugs are the most commonly attacked by parasitoids, …

Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Wound Healing: Potential Clinical Applications In Wound Repair, Sami G. Almalki Oct 2022

Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Wound Healing: Potential Clinical Applications In Wound Repair, Sami G. Almalki

Saudi Medical Journal

Delayed and chronic wounds result from the dysregulation of molecular and cellular events associated with wound healing, including migration, inflammation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, and re-epithelialization. Adipose tissue is an abundant, easily accessible, and rich source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with high therapeutic potential. In addition to their capability to differentiate into various lineages with specialized functions, adipose-derived MSCs (AMSCs) can mediate to the wound repair process through the secretion of different growth factors and mediators rather than making structural contribution alone. Adipose-derived MSCs mediate the formation of blood vessels, recruit progenitor cells, stimulate cell differentiation and ECM …
