The Ethical Perceptions Of Dog Tail Docking Amongst Owners And Veterinarians In South Carolina, Hannah Ellen Steinberg
The Ethical Perceptions Of Dog Tail Docking Amongst Owners And Veterinarians In South Carolina, Hannah Ellen Steinberg
Senior Theses
This thesis aimed to discover, in depth, what tail docking of dogs is, why it is currently in practice, what the controversial opinions surrounding it are, how the opinions differ when taking into account the professionals of the field versus owners and breeders, and how it can be addressed in the future to treat our animals as humanely as possible.
Based on the surveying of South Carolinian owners, breeders, and veterinarians, it was discovered that dog tail-docking procedures are overwhelmingly used for cosmetic or aesthetic purposes, with the aim being to match breed standards. There was a disagreement amongst those …

Stable Coexistence Or Competitive Exclusion? Fern Endophytes Demonstrate Rapid Turnover Favoring A Dominant Fungus, Brett Steven Younginger, Nathan U. Stewart, Mehmet Ali Balkan, Daniel J. Ballhorn
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Fungal endophytes are critical members of the plant microbiome, but their community dynamics throughout an entire growing season are underexplored. Additionally, most fungal endophyte research has centred on seed-reproducing hosts, while spore-reproducing plants also host endophytes and may be colonized by unique community members. In order to examine annual fungal endophyte community dynamics in a spore-reproducing host, we explored endophytes in a single population of ferns, Polystichum munitum, in the Pacific Northwest. Through metabarcoding, we characterized the community assembly and temporal turnover of foliar endophytes throughout a growing season. From these results, we selected endophytes with outsized representations in …
Informatics Approaches For Capturing Dynamic Gene Expression And Regulation, Fangfang Yan
Informatics Approaches For Capturing Dynamic Gene Expression And Regulation, Fangfang Yan
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cellular systems are regulated through dynamic and complex mechanisms that involve various signalling and gene regulations. Aberrant changes may disrupt the system, leading to disease development. Time-series data analysis includes the analysis of datasets from multiple time points, which is essential to capture dynamic gene expression and regulation. Although many efforts have been put into the time-series gene expression analysis, limited studies have explored both gene expression and regulation in a time-series manner. Our study proposed the first time specific informatics approach by integrating two critical regulators, TF and miRNA, and investigated their co-regulations. Specifically, we collected time-series bulk-tissue sequencing …
Development Of Enabling Technologies For Genomic Analysis, Su Wang
Development Of Enabling Technologies For Genomic Analysis, Su Wang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background The advance of sequencing techniques has promoted gene expression profiling. Numerous methods have also been developed to estimate genetic relatedness, or kinship. However, many problems still exist that limit gene expression data utility, governance, and kinship inference. The expanding size of gene expression datasets due to the growing number of samples and diverse sequencing conditions makes it expensive for both local storage and online sharing. In addition, the current kinship estimation approaches suffer from high computational requirements, untenable assumptions of homogeneous population ancestry, and genetic privacy concerns, especially when finding unknown familial relationships in 3rd party databases and reporting …
Disease Concept Normalization For Clinical Documents Using Deep Learning And Knowledge Graphs, Jingqi Wang
Disease Concept Normalization For Clinical Documents Using Deep Learning And Knowledge Graphs, Jingqi Wang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Medical concept normalization, also known as entity linking, is a crucial component of clinical information extraction. It maps entity mentions in free-text format to a controlled vocabulary, such as the Unified Medical Language System, to improve interoperability between different healthcare institutions and enable a wide range of applications in biomedical research and clinical practice. Data-driven methods of concept normalization, such as deep learning-based algorithms (DL), have the flexibility to handle various text variations. However, they require large-scale data annotation and are susceptible to confusion with ambiguous cases, such as medical abbreviations, acronyms, and polysemy. On the other hand, biomedical knowledge …
Proposing A Conceptual Model Of The Unintended Consequences Of Health Information Technology Policy, Nina Smith
Proposing A Conceptual Model Of The Unintended Consequences Of Health Information Technology Policy, Nina Smith
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Per the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), there is a lack of frameworks to guide research on the unintended consequences of health information technology (HIT) policy. To address this need, this research focused on the mandated use of the Texas prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP). The research’s aims were to determine the effects on, and experiences of prescribers and pharmacists as they complied with mandated PDMP use through (1) a systematic literature review, (2) semistructured interviews of prescribers and pharmacists analyzed using a grounded theory methodology and, by combining the results of the …
Spatial Information Extraction From Radiology Reports, Sarabhi Datta
Spatial Information Extraction From Radiology Reports, Sarabhi Datta
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Radiology reports contain a radiologist’s interpretations of images, and these images frequently describe spatial relations between radiological entities. Important radiographic findings are mostly documented in the reports in reference to an anatomical structure along with other clinically-relevant contextual information through spatial expressions. The spatially-grounded radiological entities mainly include clinical findings and medical devices. Although much work has focused on radiology information extraction, spatial language understanding in the radiology domain has remained less explored. The language used for representing spatial relations is complex and varied. Therefore, we aim to encode granular spatial information in the reports and automatically extract this important …

Redefining The Catalytic Hect Domain Boundaries For The Hect E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Family, Emma I. Kane, Steven A. Beasley, Johanna M. Schafer, Justine E. Bohl, Young Sun Lee, Kayla J. Rich, Elizabeth F. Bosia, Donald E. Spratt
Chemistry
There are 28 unique human members of the homologous to E6AP C-terminus (HECT) E3 ubiquitin ligase family. Each member of the HECT E3 ubiquitin ligases contains a conserved bilobal HECT domain of approximately 350 residues found near their C-termini that is responsible for their respective ubiquitylation activities. Recent studies have begun to elucidate specific roles that each HECT E3 ubiquitin ligase has in various cancers, age-induced neurodegeneration, and neurological disorders. New structural models have been recently released for some of the HECT E3 ubiquitin ligases, but many HECT domain structures have yet to be examined due to chronic insolubility and/or …

Background: Thymol as a natural biological template can be modified chemically since the hydroxyl group makes it a candidate for structural modification. Thus, this study incorporated the triazole moiety on thymol and the chlorination of thymol moiety to help improve its biological potency. Materials and methods: A series of ten 1,2,3-triazole-thymol derivatives 1–10 were synthesized from thymol, by a click reaction between O-propargyl terminal alkyne of thymol and its chlorothymol with benzyl azide and substituted benzyl azides. Their structures were confirmed by spectroscopic methods (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR, GC-MS-EI/CI and LC-ESI-QTOF-MS). The Well diffusion method using Müeller-Hinton agar plates was used …

The Constitutionality Of Texas’ Executive Orders Impacting The U.S.–Mexico Border, Beckett Cantley, Geoffrey Dietrich
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
“Federalism, central to the constitutional design, adopts the principle that both the National and State Governments have elements of sovereignty the other is bound to respect. From the existence of two sovereigns follows the possibility that laws can be in conflict or at cross-purposes.” The Supremacy Clause “provides a clear rule that federal law shall be the supreme Law of the Land.” Under this principle, Congress may preempt state laws that interfere or conflict with federal laws. United States courts have held that issues of immigration, and as they relate to national security or border security, are clearly federal and …

The Affection In Between : From Common Sense To Sensing In Common, April Flakne
The Affection In Between : From Common Sense To Sensing In Common, April Flakne
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Exposing a fundamental but forgotten capacity to sense with others, this fresh approach to ethics centers on expressive, moving bodies in everyday affective encounters.
Common sense has yet to yield its golden promise: robust selves, a stable sense of reality, and bonds of solidarity. The Affection in Between argues that reimagining common sense involves tackling two intractable philosophical puzzles together: the problems of sensory integration and of “other minds.” Construing common sense as either an individual cognitive capacity or a communal body of beliefs and practices, as our tradition of philosophical and political thought has done for too long, constricts …

Theses and Dissertations
As someone who has been a life-long audience member and who has worked in over a hundred different theatres on countless different productions over the course of my professional career, I have always been fascinated by the process of creating art out of thin air. I have watched artists undergo careful planning only to have that work thrown out during the rehearsal or technical process, or even sometimes during the last preview performance. I have watched moments unfold on stage at the last minute with seemingly no planning or effort. I have seen the reactions of audiences to moments that …
Magnetic Field Directed Self-Assembly Of Colloidal Nanoparticles Via Extreme Field Gradients Of Magnetic Recording Media, Abdul Rahman Mohtasebzadeh
Magnetic Field Directed Self-Assembly Of Colloidal Nanoparticles Via Extreme Field Gradients Of Magnetic Recording Media, Abdul Rahman Mohtasebzadeh
Theses and Dissertations
Magnetic nanoparticles have been extensively studied over the last half century and continue to sustain interest due to their potential use in different fields. This research explores Magnetic Field Directed Self-Assembly of magnetic nanoparticles using a magnetic disk drive. The magnetic fields generated by the bits in a magnetic disk drive have rapidly changing field gradients that can self-assemble magnetic nanoparticles into various shapes. We demonstrate the ability to record and read field gradients on a commercial disk drive medium and to use monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles to achieve self-assembly. We use image analysis techniques to quantify parameters related to …
