Monoclonal antibodies are an efficacious therapy against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, rapid viral mutagenesis led to escape from most of these therapies, outlining the need for an antibody cocktail with a broad neutralizing potency. Using an unbiased interrogation of the memory B cell repertoire of patients with convalescent COVID-19, we identified human antibodies with broad antiviral activity in vitro and efficacy in vivo against all tested SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, including Delta and Omicron BA.1 and BA.2. Here, we describe an antibody cocktail, IMM-BCP-01, that consists of three patient-derived broadly neutralizing antibodies directed at nonoverlapping surfaces …

Many transcription factors regulating the production, survival, and function of photoreceptor cells have been identified, but little is known about transcriptional co-regulators in retinal health and disease. Here, we show that BCL6 co-repressor (BCOR), a Polycomb repressive complex 1 factor mutated in various cancers, is involved in photoreceptor degenerative diseases. Using proteomics and transcription assays, we report that BCOR interacts with the transcription factors CRX and OTX2 and reduces their ability to activate the promoters of photoreceptor-specific genes. CUT&RUN sequencing further shows that BCOR shares genome-wide binding profiles with CRX/OTX2, consistent with a general co-repression activity. We also identify missense …

– Infrared thermography (IRT) has been used to assess skin temperature (Tsk), especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as an important tool in medical screening not only of the general population, but also of young athletes. However, the subcutaneous adipose tissue can act as an insulator when the Tsk is assessed by IRT, modifying the normal Tsk data and leading to their misinterpretation. Considering that the body mass index (BMI) is an important predictor of obesity, the objective of this study was to verify if the Tsk measured by IRT is affected by the BMI in adolescents. A preliminary study was …

Pitfalls And Guidelines For Using Time-Based Git Data, Samuel W. Flint, Jigyasa Chauhan, Robert Dyer
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Many software engineering research papers rely on time-based data (e.g., commit timestamps, issue report creation/update/close dates, release dates). Like most real-world data however, time-based data is often dirty. To date, there are no studies that quantify how frequently such data is used by the software engineering research community, or investigate sources of and quantify how often such data is dirty. Depending on the research task and method used, including such dirty data could aect the research results. This paper presents an extended survey of papers that utilize time-based data, published in the Mining Software Repositories (MSR) conference series. Out of …

Sleep, Sirtuin 1 And Alzheimer’S Disease: A Review, Mehrane Mehramiz, Tenielle Porter, Simon Laws, Stephanie R. Rainey-Smith
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sleep plays a major role in brain health, and cognition. Disrupted sleep is a well-described symptom of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, accumulating evidence suggests suboptimal sleep also increases AD risk. The deacetylase Sirtuin 1 (Sirt 1), encoded by the SIRT1 gene, impacts sleep via its relationship to wake-sleep neurotransmitters and somnogens. Evidence from animal and human studies supports a significant and complex relationship between sleep, Sirt 1/ SIRT1 and AD. Numerous hypotheses attempt to explain the critical impact of Sirt 1/ SIRT1 on wake- and sleep- promoting neurons, their related mechanisms and neurotransmitters. However, there is a paucity of studies …

Visual Attention For Linguistic And Non-Linguistic Body Actions In Non-Signing And Native Signing Children, Rain G. Bosworth, So One Hwang, David P. Corina
Articles
Evidence from adult studies of deaf signers supports the dissociation between neural systems involved in processing visual linguistic and non-linguistic body actions. The question of how and when this specialization arises is poorly understood. Visual attention to these forms is likely to change with age and be affected by prior language experience. The present study used eye-tracking methodology with infants and children as they freely viewed alternating video sequences of lexical American sign language (ASL) signs and non-linguistic body actions (self-directed grooming action and objectdirected pantomime). In Experiment 1, we quantified fixation patterns using an area of interest (AOI) approach …

Wave Interaction And Energy Absorption From Arrays Of Complex-Shaped Point Absorbers, Y Liu, S Zheng, H Liang, P Cong
Wave Interaction And Energy Absorption From Arrays Of Complex-Shaped Point Absorbers, Y Liu, S Zheng, H Liang, P Cong
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Water wave interactions with arrays of wave energy converters are numerically investigated based on the interaction theory. The converter is a heaving point absorber that can harness the ocean wave energy through up-and-down movements. A semi-analytical hybrid method is developed that combines the boundary element method and the interaction theory. The developed numerical method is verified against theoretical solutions for arrays of truncated vertical circular cylinders. Three different array layouts are studied in detail. It is found that trapped waves exist at critical wave numbers just below the cutoff values, and the peak load on the middle device increases with …

Due to the cost of inertial navigation and visual navigation equipment and lake of satellite navigation signals, they cannot be used in large‐scale underground mining environment. To solve this problem, this study proposes large‐scale underground 3D real‐time positioning method with seam height assistance. This method uses the ultrawide band positioning base station as the core and is combined with seam height information to build a factor graph confidence transfer model to realise3D positioning. The simulation results show that the proposed real‐time method is superior to the existing algorithms in positioning accuracy and can meet the needs of large‐scale underground users.

This paper presents results from the numerical investigation of nonlinear feedback interactions between ULF field-aligned currents (FACs) and the ionospheric plasma in the global magnetospheric resonator with a non-symmetrical distribution of the plasma density in the conjugate hemispheres. The density asymmetry is enhanced by the introduction of the ionospheric valley in the hemisphere where the plasma density is already lower. The main result from this study is that in the non-symmetrical resonator, the ionospheric feedback mechanism, driven by the electric field with the maximum amplitude of 50 mV/m, develops nonlinear, intense, small-scale upward currents with a characteristic quarter-wavelength structure along …

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) enable tracking ownership of digital media contents, such as images, photographs, videos, music, media streams, … in blockchain based distributed ledgers. However, in the current common implementation of NFTs, using de-facto standards such as ERC- 721, there is no way to protect the digital media data associated to the NFT. So, although the intention of the content creator may be protecting the copy rights of the digital media, this cannot be ensured with current common implementations. The proposed solution addresses this issue by allowing the content creator to specify in the NFT contract the rights for using …

Municipalities Could Provide Valuable Second-Life Uses Of Electric Vehicle Li-Ion Batteries While Legislators And Manufacturers Refine Safe Recycling And Disposal Practices, Heather D. Stewart
Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)
As consumers are embracing emerging electric vehicles (EVs) as an important step to take in combating climate change, the reality is that the EV solution has some serious short-term issues to address, especially when evaluating the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) that power most EVs. This comment first discusses the potential problems associated with the lack of recycling and disposal technology as well as regulations that are available for EV LIBs. Even though consumers and regulators alike are supportive that fossil fuel-burning internal combustion engines need to be replaced with cleaner transportation options such as EVs, policies, and proclamations are still subject …
