Basic biology tells us that each child has no more than two biological parents, one who supplies the egg and one who supplies the sperm. Adoption law in this country has generally followed biology, insisting only two parents be legally recognized for each child. Thus, every adoption begins with loss. Before a child can be adopted, that child must first be cut off from their family of birth, rendering the equation of adoption one of subtraction, not addition. This Article examines the biological model of adoption that insists on mimicking the nuclear family—erasing one set of parents and replacing them …

Fashion In The Times Of War: The Recent Exodus Of Luxury Brands From Russia And What It Means For Trademark Law, Irene Calboli, Vera Sevastianova

In February 2022, Russia infamously invaded Ukraine, starting an unprovoked war. As a result, many foreign companies left their Russia-based operations, including most luxury fashion houses. In these remarks, we elaborate on the possible issues that these companies may face regarding the enforcement of their IP rights in Russia, particularly trademark rights, following their departure resulting from the sanctions imposed by Western countries.
At the time of writing, perhaps the most pressing issue is whether luxury fashion houses risk losing their trademark rights in Russia due to their decision to suspend their operations, even though temporarily. An additional issue facing …
Optimal Standards Of Proof In Antitrust, Murat C. Mungan, Joshua Wright
Optimal Standards Of Proof In Antitrust, Murat C. Mungan, Joshua Wright
Faculty Scholarship
Economic analyses of antitrust institutions have thus far focused predominantly on optimal penalties and the design of substantive legal rules, and have largely ignored the standard of proof used in trials as a policy tool in shaping behavior. This neglected tool can play a unique role in the antitrust context, where a given firm may have the choice to engage in exceptional anticompetitive or procompetitive behavior, or simply follow more conventional business practices. The standard of proof used in determining the legality of a firm’s conduct affects not only whether the firm chooses to engage in pro- versus anticompetitive behavior, …

This paper studies the integration of the crowd workforce into a generic last-mile delivery setting in which a set of known delivery requests should be fulfilled at a minimum cost. In this setting, the crowd drivers are able to choose to perform a parcel delivery among the available and displayed requests. We specifically investigate the question: what tasks should be displayed to an individual driver, so as to minimize the overall delivery expenses? In contrast to past approaches, where drivers are either (a) given the choice of a single task chosen so as to optimize the platform’s profit, or (b) …

An Attribute-Aware Attentive Gcn Model For Attribute Missing In Recommendation, Fan Liu, Zhiyong Cheng, Lei Zhu, Chenghao Liu, Liqiang Nie
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As important side information, attributes have been widely exploited in the existing recommender system for better performance. However, in the real-world scenarios, it is common that some attributes of items/users are missing (e.g., some movies miss the genre data). Prior studies usually use a default value (i.e., "other") to represent the missing attribute, resulting in sub-optimal performance. To address this problem, in this paper, we present an attribute-aware attentive graph convolution network (A(2)-GCN). In particular, we first construct a graph, where users, items, and attributes are three types of nodes and their associations are edges. Thereafter, we leverage the graph …

A Heuristic Approach To Predict The Tensile Strength Of A Non-Persistent Jointed Brazilian Disc Under Diametral Loading, Mostafa Asadizadeh, Nima Babanouri, Taghi Sherizadeh
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The mechanical response of rock bridges plays a key role in the stability of concrete and rock structures. In particular, the tensile failure of non-persistent discontinuities can result in their coalescence and the failure of rock or concrete engineering structures. The effect of non-persistent joint parameters on rock structures' failure under tensile mode has not been investigated by many researchers yet. Many non-persistent jointed Brazilian concrete discs are tested under diametral loading in this work, to study the influence of joint spacing, joint continuity factor, loading direction with regard to joint angle, and bridge angle on their tensile behavior. Heuristic …

Metallization Of Polymers And Composites: State-Of-The-Art Approaches, Ruslan Melentiev, Arief Yudhanto, Ran Tao, Todor Vuchkov, Gilles Lubineau
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Polymers and their composites are widely used for designing structures in aerospace, automotive, electronic, sport industries due to their lightweight, cost, and processing advantages. However, the surface of polymeric materials typically exhibits intrinsic deficiencies, limiting their durability and functionalities, e.g., low wear resistance, low thermal and electrical conductivity, low adhesion, low bioactivity, low reflectiveness, and weak photochemical resistance. Polymer metallization is an emerging concept that addresses these deficiencies by forming a metallic skin on polymeric surfaces. Herein, the working principles, recent advances, challenges, functional capabilities, and applications of the state-of-the-art polymer metallization methods in the fields of additive manufacturing, coating …

Parading The Horribles: The Risks Of Expanding Religious Exemptions, Law, Rights, And Religion Project
Center for Gender & Sexuality Law
People of faith now have a constitutional right to practice their religion—even when doing so conflicts with a government law or policy — that is more rigorously protected than nearly any other right. Some states have passed bills that provide an even broader right to such “religious exemptions” from the law than provided under the U.S. Constitution. Other religious exemption bills have been introduced and await consideration.

International Investment Law And The Extractive Industries, Ella Merrill, Jesse Coleman, Lisa E. Sachs, Lise Johnson
Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment
As of April 2022, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) tallied 3,218 international investment treaties, of which 2,558 are in force. Investors in extractive industries (the oil, gas, and mining sectors) have used investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms embedded in these treaties to challenge a wide range of host state actions and inactions that have allegedly negatively affected their investments. Those claims, and the threats thereof, restrict states’ ability to maximize the benefits, and their ability to limit environmental and social harms, resulting from the exploitation of natural resources. This briefing note provides an introduction to international …

Regulation Weakness And Lack Of Public Awareness Has Impeded The Implementation Of Environmental Policies In Saudi Arabia, Nada Gurmalla Algamdy
Regulation Weakness And Lack Of Public Awareness Has Impeded The Implementation Of Environmental Policies In Saudi Arabia, Nada Gurmalla Algamdy
Dissertations & Theses
This research aimed to substantially illustrate that the weakness of environmental regulations and lack of public participation in urban planning alongside poor public awareness in Saudi Arabia has inhibited the implementation of environmental policies across this region. To study these issues, this research compared the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (“KSA”) to the United States (“US”) building on numerous studies to illustrate how the identified weaknesses correlate with weak or ineffective environmental policies. It is well known that it would be better to use a European country “because it's known that the EU has tough environmental measures" as a model for …

Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is a rare cutaneous histopathologic reaction pattern associated with several underlying disorders. Few cases of PNGD have been associated with hematologic malignancies, in particular with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), a malignant hematopoietic disorder with features of myeloproliferative neoplasm and myelodysplastic syndrome. CMML is characterized by peripheral blood monocytosis and bone marrow dysplasia, and can be supported by an acquired clonal cytogenetic abnormality most commonly in TET2, SRSF2, ASXL1, RUNX1, NRAS, and CBL. We present a patient with a papulosquamous rash on the neck, chest, and shoulders with histomorphological features on the spectrum of PNGD. …

One of the observed effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and visible light (VL) on melanocompetent skin is increased pigmentation, also known as skin darkening or tanning. Many methods are used to measure skin pigment, including the Fontana-Masson stain (FMS) and MART-1 immunostain, which histologically highlight melanin and melanocyte density, respectively. While these approaches may be adequate in assessing baseline skin pigment among individuals of different races and phototypes, detecting the skin darkening induced by UVR and VL within the same individual is a challenge, especially in darker skin phototypes. We conducted a literature search and analyzed 16 articles comparing skin …

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of melanocytes, resulting in depigmented skin lesions. Epidemiology studies in vitiligo are often limited to smaller sample sizes and rely on dermatology clinics as the source population. The population-based Vitiligo and Life Impact Among International Communities (VALIANT) study sought to understand the natural history of vitiligo among patients around the world. Here, data from US participants are presented. Participants were recruited via an online panel. Adults (aged ≥18 years) who self-reported a vitiligo diagnosis by a health care professional were eligible to participate. Of 608 US patients, 58% were male; …

Background: No keloid-specific outcome measures exist.
Objective: To develop and validate the Detroit Keloid Scale (DKS), a standardized method of keloid assessment to better compare treatments.
Methods: Forty-seven physicians were polled to develop the DKS. The scale was validated in 52 patients with keloids against the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS), and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) by 3 physicians.
Results: The interrater reliability was “substantial” for observer component of the DKS and only “moderate” for the VSS and observer POSAS (ICC were 0.80, 0.60, and 0.47, respectively). Pearson’s correlation indicated a “moderate” association …

Background: In ADVANCE (NCT03721172), apremilast 30 mg BID (APR) demonstrated significantly greater sPGA response vs. PBO at Week 16 (22% vs. 4%; P <.0001) in patients with mild-to-moderate psoriasis. The Physician Global Assessment and Body Surface Area Composite Tool (PGA × BSA) is a simple, sensitive measure of psoriasis severity for patients with BSA<10%. We performed a post hoc analysis of the efficacy results from ADVANCE using the PGA×BSA.
Methods: This current post hoc analysis included all randomized patients. Missing data were imputed by multiple imputation. PGAxBSA-50/75/90 was 50%, 75% and 90% improvement in PGAxBSA from baseline.
Results: Of 595 randomized patients (APR: 297; PBO: 298), baseline characteristics were similar for mean BSA (APR: 6.4; PBO: 6.3), sPGA score 2 (APR 31%; PBO: 31%), sPGA score 3 (APR: 69%; PBO: 70%), and mean PGA×BSA (APR: 17.6; PBO: 17.5). At Week 16, significantly more patients achieved PGAxBSA-50/75/90 …
