Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

When central nervous system has a problem, somatic area I and II respond to stimulation differently. Therefore, it is possible to identify some of the central nervous diseases when somatosensory on the fingertip is stimulated and responses are recorded and analyzed. We designed a system to stimulate the mechanoreceptors on fingertips. It is composed of a mechanical system for fingertip stimulation, an embedded controller, a control computer, and a software to control overall operation. During test, mechanoreceptors are stimulated according to the test protocols. Individuals' answers are recorded to be evaluated by the developed software. In this study, several design …

Unsupervised Home Exercises Versus Formal Physical Therapy After Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review, Yash P. Chaudhry, Hunter Hayes, Zachary Wells, Efstratios Papadelis, Alfonso Arevalo, Timothy Horan, Harpal S Khanuja, Carl Deirmengian

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research

Historically, postoperative exercise and physical therapy (PT) have been viewed as crucial to a successful outcome following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess differences in both short- and long-term objective and self-reported measures between primary THA patients with formal supervised physical therapy versus unsupervised home exercises after discharge. A search was conducted of six electronic databases from inception to December 14, 2020, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing changes from baseline in lower extremity strength (LES), aerobic capacity, and self-reported physical function and quality of life (QoL) between supervised and unsupervised physical therapy/exercise …

Is Your C-Suite Risk Literate?, Jason Bergner, Joshua J. Filzen

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Managing risk effectively is essential for business success, and thus understanding risk is vital for business executives. Effective risk management increases firm value, whereas poor risk management will damage shareholder wealth. In this article, we examine the risk literacy of business executives and find significant variation among the leaders we sample. Our findings suggest that business executives would be well served to evaluate their own risk literacy, and remediate, if necessary; to work to increase risk literacy in the company’s employees; and to include risk literacy as an important and routine part of the firm’s overall culture. Because the importance …

Synthesis Of Metastable Ruddlesden–Popper Titanates, (ATio3)NAO, With N ≥ 20 By Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, Matthew R. Barone, Myoungho Jeong, Nicholas Parker, Jiaxin Sun, Dmitri A. Tenne, Kiyoung Lee, Darrell G. Schlom

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We outline a method to synthesize (ATiO3)nAO Ruddlesden–Popper phases with high-n, where the A-site is a mixture of barium and strontium, by molecular-beam epitaxy. The precision and consistency of the method described is demonstrated by the growth of an unprecedented (SrTiO3)50SrO epitaxial film. We proceed to investigate barium incorporation into the Ruddlesden–Popper structure, which is limited to a few percent in bulk, and we find that the amount of barium that can be incorporated depends on both the substrate temperature and the strain state of the …

International Drug Law And The Sustainable Development Goals: A Sober Assessment Of Compatability, Aidan Peter O'Callaghan Sep 2022

International Drug Law And The Sustainable Development Goals: A Sober Assessment Of Compatability, Aidan Peter O'Callaghan

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

The regulation of drugs under international law is underpinned by a framework largely unchanged since the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Sixty years later, this framework continues to inform and restrain domestic drug laws, requiring countries to criminally sanction the possession and trade in specified substances, including those which may otherwise be considered mild or commercially useful. Comparing this framework with the United Nations' "Agenda 2030" Sustainable Development Goals reveals that the international community's ambitions, at least insofar as health, economics, and justice are concerned, are undermined by the Single Convention framework. This is because the prohibitionist approach which …

Beyond True And False: Fake News And The Digital Epistemic Divide, Gilad Abiri, Johannes Buchheim Sep 2022

Beyond True And False: Fake News And The Digital Epistemic Divide, Gilad Abiri, Johannes Buchheim

Michigan Technology Law Review

The massive fact-checking, flagging, and content removal campaigns run by major digital platforms during the 2020 elections and the Covid-19 pandemic did some good. However, they failed to prevent substantial portions of the population from believing that the election was stolen or that vaccinations are dangerous.

In this Article, we argue that the reason for the ineffectiveness of truth-based solutions—such as fact-checking— is that they do not reach the heart of the problem. Both scholars and policymakers share the implicit or explicit belief that the rise of digital fake news is harmful mainly because it spreads false information, which lays …

Rates Of Future Climate Change In The Gulf Of Mexico And The Caribbean Sea: Implications For Coral Reef Ecosystems, A. E. Lawman, S. G. Dee, K. L. Delong, A. M.S. Correa

Faculty Publications

Rising temperatures and ocean acidification due to anthropogenic climate change pose ominous threats to coral reef ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and the western Caribbean Sea. Unfortunately, the once structurally complex coral reefs in the GoM and Caribbean have dramatically declined since the 1970s; relatively few coral reefs still exhibit a mean live coral cover of >10%. Additional work is needed to characterize future climate stressors on coral reefs in the GoM and the Caribbean Sea. Here, we use climate model simulations spanning the period of 2015–2100 to partition and assess the individual impacts of climate stressors on …

Faculty Publications

Background: Delays between breast cancer diagnosis and surgery are associated with worsened survival. Delays are more common in urban-residing patients, although factors specific to surgical delays among rural and urban patients are not well understood. Methods: We used a 100% sample of fee-for-service Medicare claims during 2007–2014 to identify 238,491 women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer undergoing initial surgery and assessed whether they experienced biopsy-to-surgery intervals > 90 days. We employed multilevel regression to identify associations between delays and patient, regional, and surgeon characteristics, both in combined analyses and stratified by rurality of patient residence. Results: Delays were more prevalent among …

Common Correlated Effects Estimation For Dynamic Heterogeneous Panels With Non-Stationary Multi-Factor Error Structures, Shiyun Cao, Qiankun Zhou Sep 2022

Common Correlated Effects Estimation For Dynamic Heterogeneous Panels With Non-Stationary Multi-Factor Error Structures, Shiyun Cao, Qiankun Zhou

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider the estimation of a dynamic panel data model with non-stationary multi-factor error structures. We adopted the common correlated effect (CCE) estimation and established the asymptotic properties of the CCE and common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG) estimators, as N and T tend to infinity. The results show that both the CCE and CCEMG estimators are consistent and the CCEMG estimator is asymptotically normally distributed. The theoretical findings were supported for small samples by an extensive simulation study, showing that the CCE estimators are robust to a wide variety of data generation processes. Empirical findings suggest …

Filipino students performed poorly in the PISA 2018 mathematics assessment, with more than 50% obtaining scores below the lowest proficiency level. Students from public schools also performed worse compared to their private school counterparts. We used machine learning approaches, specifically binary classification methods, to model the variables that best identified the poor performing students (below Level 1) vs. better performing students (Levels 1 to 6) using the PISA data from a nationally representative sample of 15-year-old Filipino students. We analyzed data from students in private and public schools separately. Several binary classification methods were applied, and the best classification model …

The direct characterization of exoplanetary systems with high-contrast imaging is among the highest priorities for the broader exoplanet community. As large space missions will be necessary for detecting and characterizing exo-Earth twins, developing the techniques and technology for direct imaging of exoplanets is a driving focus for the community. For the first time, JWST will directly observe extrasolar planets at mid-infrared wavelengths beyond 5 μm, deliver detailed spectroscopy revealing much more precise chemical abundances and atmospheric conditions, and provide sensitivity to analogs of our solar system ice-giant planets at wide orbital separations, an entirely new class of exoplanet. However, in …

Association Between Metabolic Overweight/Obesity Phenotypes And Readmission Risk In Patients With Lung Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Zinuo Yuan, Yiping Cheng, Junming Han, Dawei Wang, Hang Dong, Yingzhou Shi, Kyle L Poulsen, Xiude Fan, Jiajun Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Increased body mass index (BMI) and metabolic abnormalities are controversial prognostic factors of lung cancer. However, the relationship between metabolic overweight/obesity phenotypes and hospital readmission in patients with lung cancer is rarely reported.

METHODS: We established a retrospective cohort using the United States (US) Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD). We included adult patients diagnosed with lung cancer from January 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018 and excluded patients combined with other cancers, pregnancy, died during hospitalization, low body weight, and those with missing data. The cohort was observed for hospital readmission until December 31, 2018. We defined and distinguished four …

The Public Right To Education, Matthew Patrick Shaw Sep 2022

The Public Right To Education, Matthew Patrick Shaw

University of Chicago Law Review

Public education is “the most important function of state and local government” and yet not a “fundamental right or liberty.” This Article engages one of constitutional law’s most intractable problems by introducing “the public right to education” as a doctrinal pathway to a constitutional right to education process in three steps. First, it identifies that the otherwise right-to-education foreclosing case, San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez, only contemplated education as a fundamental right or liberty interest. Second, by identifying public education as a due process–protected property interest, this Article presents a viable pathway for circumventing Rodriguez. Third, mindful of …
