In November 2025, FESET members gathered at the European Parliament in Strasbourg for our seminar, “Under Pressure – Social Education in Disruption.” The choice of venue was a deliberate statement of intent. Delivering high‑quality, person‑centred social care depends on a stable, skilled, and experienced workforce that is appropriately valued. In Northern Ireland, policy rhetoric over the past decade has consistently highlighted the need for sustained investment in the social care workforce. Against this backdrop, the Northern Ireland Social Care Council commissioned this study to ensure that the perspectives of social care workers are central to workforce development initiatives. The study involved a cross‑sectional, population‑based survey of 586 social care workers. This article examines the challenges of training social intervention professionals in an increasingly polarised society. Drawing on theoretical perspectives on political and affective polarisation, it explores how contemporary social divisions shape social work practice. The analysis includes findings from a five-year qualitative study on radicalisation prevention in France, highlighting tensions between security imperatives and the ethical foundations of social work. These tensions often generate mistrust and professional dilemmas for practitioners. The article argues that social work education must address polarisation directly. Background: Autistic children and young people (CYP) experience inequalities in oral health. They are at higher risk of dental caries and periodontal disease and are more likely to have teeth extracted under general anaesthetic than their non-autistic peers. Poor oral health among autistic CYP results from multiple factors, including sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and difficulties accessing appropriate dental care. This qualitative study explored factors influencing autistic CYP’s access to dental care from the perspective of CYP, parents/carers, and dental health professionals (DHPs). Healthcare and social work professionals are currently facing a crisis characterised by chronic stress, burnout, and high attrition rates. While the root causes of these issues are often systemic, the emotional burden falls heavily on individual professionals, often leading to maladaptive coping mechanisms such as "cool-out" strategies or withdrawal. This article introduces the Erasmus+ project Simply4Emotions, which addresses this challenge by developing a digital-physical simulation game designed to foster emotional self-regulation and resilience. Curricula in Social Educational Care Work increasingly face structural pressures shaped by neoliberal logics, managerial priorities and cost-efficiency paradigms. Creative and artistic components, traditionally central in the curricula, are particularly targeted, despite a growing consensus in research and professional practice regarding the indispensable role of art and creativity for personal development, well-being, social connection and inclusion. This article analyses institutional pressures, shifting curriculum priorities and the risks associated with diminished artistic courses and outlines pathways for strengthening art‑based and creative pedagogies in the current challenging context.

In this practice‑oriented research we explore how storyweaving can counterbalance the increasingly negative public discourse surrounding youth care. While societal narratives often emphasise staff shortages, aggression, and systemic failure, youth care workers also describe moments of connection, growth, and meaning that rarely enter the dominant conversation. Through nine storyweaving workshops with 79 youth care workers, six duo‑interviews across roles and organisations, and ongoing reflection with a professional steering group, three central themes emerged: the importance of connection and recognition, the shrinking “space in between” where genuine relational work can occur, and the need to focus on process rather than results. …

This paper examines the erosion of concern for the social and relational in the United Kingdom through four decades of neoliberal policy, and argues for social pedagogy as a principled and urgently needed counterbalance. Drawing on a career spanning public, charitable, and academic practice primarily with children in and on the edges of care, it traces how the introduction of neoliberalism under Thatcher in the 1980s — and its institutionalisation through New Public Management in the 1990s — systematically dismantled the relational, ethical, and communal foundations of work with children. The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) document "Standards For Human Stem Cell Use in Research" put forward a checklist for scientific journals to use in the assessment of compliance with its reporting standards. A trial implementation of this checklist at Stem Cell Reports revealed consistent gaps in the reporting of critical data relating to the cells and experimental methodologies employed in published manuscripts.

Borate-based glasses modified with alkali oxides are of considerable interest due to their tunable structural and optical properties, which are important for optical and energy storage applications. In this work, glasses with a novel nominal composition of xLi2O-(75-x) B2O3—20Bi2O3—5V2O5, in which (x ¼ 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 mol %) were produced using the traditional melt-quenching technique to investigate the effect of substituting the glass former B2O3 with the modifier Li2O. The structural and optical properties were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV—visible spectroscopy. The XRD analysis confirms the amorphous nature of the samples produced. …

LGBTQ individuals experience mental health issues more frequently than the heterosexual population (Benz et al., 2019; Hinton et al., 2024; Nakamura & Logie, 2020). It appears that they often face unique challenges when seeking mental health care (Makadon et al., 2015). These may become complex when working with Christian counselors when there are conflicting beliefs between their religious views and their counseling standards (Lane, 2021). Although the sport originated in the postwar southeastern United States and initially drew a largely regional fan base, by the late-1990s it enjoyed a national following and expanded its race schedule across the country. The theories guiding this study were the critical theory and the critical race theory created by Max Horkheimer as it explains how people can collaborate and actively participate in rebuilding trust. Closely related species often exhibit distinct morphologies that can contribute to species-specific adaptations and reproductive isolation. One example is Lepidopteran caterpillar appendages, such as the “caudal horn” of Bombycoidea moths, which have evolved substantial morphological diversity among species in this group. Using interspecific crosses, we identify the genetic basis of the caudal horn size difference between Bombyx mori and its closest relative Bombyx mandarina. The three largest of eight QTL account for one third the mean horn length difference between the species. The largest of these, on chromosome 4, encompasses a conserved Wnt family gene cluster, key upstream regulators …

Soil depth is critical to ecosystem productivity, acting as a reservoir for water, nutrients, and carbon. Deeper soils enhance water holding capacity to withstand droughts in native and agricultural systems, and provide more volume for long-term carbon sequestration, directly influencing soil health and climate regulation. This dataset scraped public well log (AKA well driller’s report) data from the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) to create a soil depth map across the Magic Valley in south-central Idaho, USA. Soils in this region are predominantly loess-derived silt-loams, underlain by undulating beds of basalt on top of deep rhyolite. Starting in the …
