Fueling Green Connections: Networked Policy Instrument Choices For Sustainability Regulation, Ishani Mukherjee Sep 2022

Fueling Green Connections: Networked Policy Instrument Choices For Sustainability Regulation, Ishani Mukherjee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper presents a policy network analysis study that examines policy subsystem interconnectedness and cohesion, to explore three constituent regulatory policy instruments that have a combined impact on governing sustainability. The network surrounding the environmental sustainability of biodiesel policy in Indonesia is marked by high interconnectedness and relatively weaker cohesion, properties that impact how policy solutions are formulated through policy actor interactions and define prevailing policy formulation styles. Using primary policy network data on 46 organizations and the review of national regulations, laws, and directives, this paper tests established hypotheses on how instruments that are formulated within the same policy …

Microplastics In Agricultural Soils From A Semi-Arid Region And Their Transport By Wind Erosion, Mahrooz Rezaei, Sajjad Abbasi, Haniye Pourmahmood, Patryk Oleszczuk, Coen Ritsema, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Despite the importance of agricultural soils, little is known about the fate of microplastics (MPs) in this environment. In the present study, MPs have been determined in soils and wind-eroded sediments from two vegetable-growing fields in the Fars province of Iran, one using plastic mulch for water retention (Field 1) and the other using wastewater for irrigation (Field 2). MPs were heterogeneously distributed in the surface (0–5 cm) and subsurface (5–15 cm) soils of both fields, with a maximum concentration overall of about 1.1 MP g−1 and no significant differences in concentrations between either fields or depths. Fibres represented the …

Climate‐Driven Shifts In Kelp Forest Composition Reduce Carbon Sequestration Potential, Luka Seamus Wright, Albert Pessarrodona, A Foggo Sep 2022

Climate‐Driven Shifts In Kelp Forest Composition Reduce Carbon Sequestration Potential, Luka Seamus Wright, Albert Pessarrodona, A Foggo

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The potential contribution of kelp forests to blue carbon sinks is currently of great interest but interspecific variance has received no attention. In the temperate Northeast Atlantic, kelp forest composition is changing due to climate-driven poleward range shifts of cold temperate Laminaria digitata and L. hyperborea and warm temperate L. ochroleuca. To understand how this might affect the carbon sequestration potential of this ecosystem, we quantified interspecific differences in carbon export and decomposition alongside changes in detrital photosynthesis and biochemistry. We found that while warm temperate kelp exports up to 71% more carbon per plant, it decomposes up to 155% …

Symptoms Of Paranoia Experienced By Students Of Pakistani Heritage In England: The Role Of Explicit And Implicit Identities And Perceived Discrimination, Anam Elahi, Jason C. Mcintyre, Justin Thomas, Louise Abernethy, Richard P. Bentall, Ross G. White

All Works

ABSTRACT: Individuals belonging to ethnic minority groups are less likely to experience symptoms of psychosis, such as paranoia, if they live in areas with high proportions of people from the same ethnic background. This effect may be due to processes associated with group belonging (social identification). We examined whether the relationship between perceived discrimination and paranoia was moderated by explicit and implicit Pakistani/English identification among students of Pakistani heritage (N = 119). Participants completed measures of explicit and implicit Pakistani and English identity, a measure of perceived discrimination, and a measure of paranoia. Perceived discrimination was the strongest predictor of …

A Gpu-Based Machine Learning Approach For Detection Of Botnet Attacks, Michal Motylinski, Áine Macdermott, Farkhund Iqbal, Babar Shah

All Works

Rapid development and adaptation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has created new problems for securing these interconnected devices and networks. There are hundreds of thousands of IoT devices with underlying security vulnerabilities, such as insufficient device authentication/authorisation making them vulnerable to malware infection. IoT botnets are designed to grow and compete with one another over unsecure devices and networks. Once infected, the device will monitor a Command-and-Control (C&C) server indicating the target of an attack via Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. These security issues, coupled with the continued growth of IoT, presents a much larger attack surface for …

Detecting criminal activity online is not a new concept but how it can occur is changing. Technology and the influx of social media applications and platforms has a vital part to play in this changing landscape. As such, we observe an increasing problem with cyber abuse and ‘trolling’/toxicity amongst social media platforms sharing stories, posts, memes sharing content. In this paper we present our work into the application of deep learning techniques for the detection of ‘trolls’ and toxic content shared on social media platforms. We propose a machine learning solution for the detection of toxic images based on embedded …

A Critical Analysis Of The Claim That Absolute Juristic Interpretation (Ijtihād) Has, Moath Alnaief, Kotb Rissouni

All Works

This article critically analyzes the dominant opinion prevailing regarding the foundation of Islamic jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh) which states that absolute independent juristic interpretation (al-ijtihād al-muṭlaq al-mustaqill) is no longer possible. Therefore, based on the belief that this level of interpretation requires the creation of a unique method for deriving legal rules (istinbāṭ), a method that arguably ended with the founders of the primary schools of law. This research inspects a new interpretive method which was not developed by late scholars. Consequently, the article uses legal reasoning as an interpretive method to criticize the previous opinions regarding Islamic Jurisprudence by using …

Unreliable Automated Complete Blood Count Results: Causes, Recognition, And Resolution, Gene Gulati, Guldeep Uppal, Jerald Z. Gong

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Automated hematology analyzers generate accurate complete blood counts (CBC) results on nearly all specimens. However, every laboratory encounters, at times, some specimens that yield no or inaccurate result(s) for one or more CBC parameters even when the analyzer is functioning properly and the manufacturer's instructions are followed to the letter. Inaccurate results, which may adversely affect patient care, are clinically unreliable and require the attention of laboratory professionals. Laboratory professionals must recognize unreliable results, determine the possible cause(s), and be acquainted with the ways to obtain reliable results on such specimens. We present a concise overview of the known causes …

The low-dose imatinib improved the right ventricular (RV) function parameters including estimated systolic and mean pulmonary arterial pressures (sPA and mPAP) and clinical symptoms. On day 53 to day 168 after imatinib administration, as PH and clinical signs worsened, low-dose sildenafil (0.5 mg/kg, q12h) was administered in combination with imatinib. This combination greatly reduced the estimated sPA and mPAP, and improved clinical …

Tax Challenges In Debt Financing Involving Digital Tokens, Vincent Ooi Sep 2022

Tax Challenges In Debt Financing Involving Digital Tokens, Vincent Ooi

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

When digital tokens are used in debt finance, one cannot assume that the same orthodox tax treatment will apply. The highly specific nature of tax provisions means that they may apply very differently once digital tokens rather than fiat currency are involved. Through a case study of Singapore law, this article shows that if debt finance transactions involving digital tokens are not carefully structured, there may be severe tax consequences, including the inability to deduct borrowing costs or benefit from common tax incentives, and the possible incurrence of additional tax liabilities. This article submits that, under Singapore tax law, it …

Corporate Shareholders In Singapore: Retail Shareholders, Effective Empowerment And The Unfulfilled Promise Of The Digital Revolution, Pearlie M. C. Koh, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Under Singapore’s companies legislation, shareholders are vested with significant powers, placing them in the position to play an important monitoring role. Although there are discernible corporate governance benefits to encouraging shareholders to take on a more participatory role, many have argued against shareholder empowerment. Indeed, it is often asserted that shareholders are ill-equipped to play any role in corporate governance for a variety of reasons, including the generally-held view that shareholders, in particular retail investors, are rationally apathetic. The situation is presumed to be exacerbated in Singapore’s “concentrated shareholding” corporate environment. In this research, we sought empirical data to assess …
