Joint Hyperbolic And Euclidean Geometry Contrastive Graph Neural Networks, Xiaoyu Xu, Guansong Pang, Di Wu, Mingsheng Shang Sep 2022

Joint Hyperbolic And Euclidean Geometry Contrastive Graph Neural Networks, Xiaoyu Xu, Guansong Pang, Di Wu, Mingsheng Shang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in a wide variety of analytical tasks. Current GNN approaches focus on learning representations in a Euclidean space, which are effective in capturing non-tree-like structural relations, but they fail to model complex relations in many real-world graphs, such as tree-like hierarchical graph structure. This paper instead proposes to learn representations in both Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces to model these two types of graph geometries. To this end, we introduce a novel approach - Joint hyperbolic and Euclidean geometry contrastive graph neural networks (JointGMC). JointGMC is enforced to learn multiple layer-wise optimal combinations …

A Carbon-Aware Planning Framework For Production Scheduling In Mining, Nurual Asyikeen Azhar, Aldy Gunawan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Erwin Leonardi Sep 2022

A Carbon-Aware Planning Framework For Production Scheduling In Mining, Nurual Asyikeen Azhar, Aldy Gunawan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Erwin Leonardi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Managing the flow of excavated materials from a mine pit and the subsequent processing steps is the logistical challenge in mining. Mine planning needs to consider various geometric and resource constraints while maximizing the net present value (NPV) of profits over a long horizon. This mine planning problem has been modelled and solved as a precedence constrained production scheduling problem (PCPSP) using heuristics, due to its NP-hardness. However, the recent push for sustainable and carbon-aware mining practices calls for new planning approaches. In this paper, we propose an efficient temporally decomposed greedy Lagrangian relaxation (TDGLR) approach to maximize profits while …

Eeg-Video Emotion-Based Summarization: Learning With Eeg Auxiliary Signals, Wai-Cheong L. Lew, Di Wang, Kai-Keng Ang, Joo-Hwee Lim, Chai Quek, Ah-Hwee Tan Sep 2022

Eeg-Video Emotion-Based Summarization: Learning With Eeg Auxiliary Signals, Wai-Cheong L. Lew, Di Wang, Kai-Keng Ang, Joo-Hwee Lim, Chai Quek, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Video summarization is the process of selecting a subset of informative keyframes to expedite storytelling with limited loss of information. In this paper, we propose an EEG-Video Emotion-based Summarization (EVES) model based on a multimodal deep reinforcement learning (DRL) architecture that leverages neural signals to learn visual interestingness to produce quantitatively and qualitatively better video summaries. As such, EVES does not learn from the expensive human annotations but the multimodal signals. Furthermore, to ensure the temporal alignment and minimize the modality gap between the visual and EEG modalities, we introduce a Time Synchronization Module (TSM) that uses an attention mechanism …

Performance Evaluation Of Aggregation-Based Group Recommender Systems For Ephemeral Groups, Edgar Ceh-Varela, Huiping Cao, Hady Wirawan Lauw Sep 2022

Performance Evaluation Of Aggregation-Based Group Recommender Systems For Ephemeral Groups, Edgar Ceh-Varela, Huiping Cao, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recommender Systems (RecSys) provide suggestions in many decision-making processes. Given that groups of people can perform many real-world activities (e.g., a group of people attending a conference looking for a place to dine), the need for recommendations for groups has increased. A wide range of Group Recommender Systems (GRecSys) has been developed to aggregate individual preferences to group preferences. We analyze 175 studies related to GRecSys. Previous works evaluate their systems using different types of groups (sizes and cohesiveness), and most of such works focus on testing their systems using only one type of item, called Experience Goods (EG). As …

Constrained Multiagent Reinforcement Learning For Large Agent Population, Jiajing Ling, Arambam James Singh, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar Sep 2022

Constrained Multiagent Reinforcement Learning For Large Agent Population, Jiajing Ling, Arambam James Singh, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning control policies for a large number of agents in a decentralized setting is challenging due to partial observability, uncertainty in the environment, and scalability challenges. While several scalable multiagent RL (MARL) methods have been proposed, relatively few approaches exist for large scale constrained MARL settings. To address this, we first formulate the constrained MARL problem in a collective multiagent setting where interactions among agents are governed by the aggregate count and types of agents, and do not depend on agents’ specific identities. Second, we show that standard Lagrangian relaxation methods, which are popular for single agent RL, do not …

Risk-Aware Procurement Optimization In A Global Technology Supply Chain, Jonathan Chase, Jingfeng Yang, Hoong Chuin Lau Sep 2022

Risk-Aware Procurement Optimization In A Global Technology Supply Chain, Jonathan Chase, Jingfeng Yang, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supply chain disruption, from ‘Black Swan’ events like the COVID-19 pandemic or the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to more ordinary issues such as labour disputes and adverse weather conditions, can result in delays, missed orders, and financial loss for companies that deliver products globally. Developing a risk-tolerant procurement strategy that anticipates the logistical problems incurred by disruption involves both accurate quantification of risk and cost-effective decision-making. We develop a supplier-focused risk evaluation metric that constrains a procurement optimization model for a global technology company. Our solution offers practical risk tolerance and cost-effectiveness, accounting for a range of constraints that realistically …

Analyzing The Impact Of Covid-19 Control Policies On Campus Occupancy And Mobility Via Wifi Sensing, Camellia Zakaria, Amee Trivedi, Emmanuel Cecchet, Michael Chee, Prashant Shenoy, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile sensing has played a key role in providing digital solutions to aid with COVID-19 containment policies, primarily to automate contact tracing and social distancing measures. As more and more countries reopen from lockdowns, there remains a pressing need to minimize crowd movements and interactions, particularly in enclosed spaces. Many COVID-19 technology solutions leverage positioning systems, generally using Bluetooth and GPS, and can theoretically be adapted to monitor safety compliance within dedicated environments. However, they may not be the ideal modalities for indoor positioning. This article conjectures that analyzing user occupancy and mobility via deployed WiFi infrastructure can help institutions …

Toward Intention Discovery For Early Malice Detection In Bitcoin, Ling Cheng, Feida Zhu, Yong Wang, Huiwen Liu Sep 2022

Toward Intention Discovery For Early Malice Detection In Bitcoin, Ling Cheng, Feida Zhu, Yong Wang, Huiwen Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bitcoin has been subject to illicit activities more often than probably any other financial assets, due to the pseudo-anonymous nature of its transacting entities. An ideal detection model is expected to achieve all the three properties of (I) early detection, (II) good interpretability, and (III) versatility for various illicit activities. However, existing solutions cannot meet all these requirements, as most of them heavily rely on deep learning without satisfying interpretability and are only available for retrospective analysis of a specific illicit type.First, we present asset transfer paths, which aim to describe addresses' early characteristics. Next, with a decision tree based …

Pharmacogenomics: An Opportunity For Personalised Psychotropic Prescribing In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, B Perera, C Steward, K Courtenay, T Andrews, R Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

There is growing evidence for the use of pharmacogenomics in psychotropic prescribing. People with intellectual disabilities are disproportionately prescribed psychotropics and are at risk of polypharmacy. There is an urgent need for safeguards to prevent psychotropic overprescribing but it is equally crucial that this population is not left behind in such exciting initiatives. Understanding how genetic variations affect medications is a step towards personalised medicine. This may improve personalised prescribing for people with intellectual disabilities, especially given the high rate of psychiatric and behavioural problems in this population. Our editorial explores opportunities and challenges that pharmacogenomics offers for the challenges …

Property In Whose Name? Intrahousehold Bargaining Over Homeownership In China, Jia Yu, Cheng Cheng Sep 2022

Property In Whose Name? Intrahousehold Bargaining Over Homeownership In China, Jia Yu, Cheng Cheng

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Previous research typically examined homeownership inequality across individuals or households, overlooking the intrahousehold allocation of homeownership. Using couple-level data of the 2016 China Family Panel Studies, our study addresses the gap by examining the bargaining over homeownership between husbands and wives in China. Descriptive results reveal a large gender gap in homeownership: only about one-quarter of couples listed the wife as an owner on the Housing Ownership Certificate, whereas about 92% listed the husband. The gender gap in ownership, however, has narrowed among couples married after 2000. Multivariate analyses show that economic autonomy, relative resources, housing purchase conditions, and modernization …

Well-Being Science For Teaching And The General Public, William Tov, Derrick Wirtz, Kostadin Kushlev, Robert Biswas-Diener, Ed Diener

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Research on well-being has exploded in recent years to more than 55,000 relevant publications annually, making it difficult for psychologists—including key communicators such as textbook authors—to stay current with this field. Moreover, well-being is a daily concern among policymakers and members of the general public. Well-being science is relevant to the lives of students—illustrating the diverse methods used in the behavioral sciences, presenting highly replicated findings, and demonstrating the diversity of individuals and cultures. Therefore, in this article, we present eight major findings that teachers and authors should seriously consider in their coverage of this field. These topics include processes …

Visualizing Politics In Indonesia: The Design And Distribution Of Election Posters, Colm A. Fox Sep 2022

Visualizing Politics In Indonesia: The Design And Distribution Of Election Posters, Colm A. Fox

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Where studies have shown that visuals are the primary means of political communication, research continues to focus largely on text-based information. To add to our understanding of visual-political communications, this article analyses Indonesian election posters since the 1950s. Drawing on historical materials and on a content analysis of 4,000 election posters, it asks why election posters have been designed and distributed in particular ways. Findings indicate that in the past, posters used singular, though powerful, social symbols to mobilize demographic groups behind political parties. However, contemporary posters are more visually complex and more candidate-centered, making arguments as to what the …

In Covid-19 Health Messaging, Loss Framing Increases Anxiety With Little-To-No Concomitant Benefits: Experimental Evidence From 84 Countries, Charles A. Dorison, Et. Al., Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

With the rapid speed of globalization and technological breakthroughs, current social issues have become more complex than in past decades. As many issues such as pandemics, terrorism, and interracial conflict are realistically unpredictable, the idea of resilience offers an intuitively plausible and attainable strategy to deal with these potential adversities. The current narrative review explores the cultivation of positive emotions and traits as a plausible way to achieve a resilient society. Based on research in the social and industrial organizational psychology literature, we reviewed the role of positive emotions and traits on resilience. Lastly, we highlight important experiences and interventions …

Access To Power: Electricity And The Infrastructural State In Pakistan, Ijlal Naqvi Sep 2022

Access To Power: Electricity And The Infrastructural State In Pakistan, Ijlal Naqvi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Pakistan would desperately like to produce enough electricity, but it usually doesn’t. This is the rare issue on which government and private sector can unite, and it is the cause of suffering for rich and poor alike across the entirety of the country. Despite prioritization by successive governments, targeted reforms shaped by international development actors, and featuring prominently in Chinese Belt and Road Investments, the Pakistani power sector still stifles economic and social life across the country. This book explores state capacity in Pakistan by following the material infrastructure of electricity across the provinces and down into cities and homes. …

A Traitor-Resistant And Dynamic Anonymous Communication Service For Cloud-Based Vanets, Huiying Hou, Jianting Ning, Yunlei Zhao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud-based VANETs are designed to enable communication between high-speed vehicles. In such a highly dynamic environment, how to provide secure and anonymous communication service is a challenge. In this article, we affirmatively address the challenge by proposing a traitor-resistant and dynamic anonymous communication framework (TD-ACF) for cloud-based VANETs, which supports several advantageous features. In TD-ACF, each vehicle is represented by a set of attributes instead of its real identity, and the driving data is transmitted in encrypted form. Therefore, the anonymous authentication and the confidentiality of driving data are achieved in this way. Meanwhile, TD-ACF supports two practical requirements in …

Fine-Grained And Controllably Editable Data Sharing With Accountability In Cloud Storage, Huiying Hou, Jianting Ning, Yunlei Zhao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increasing cloud storage service, users can enjoy non-interactive data sharing. Nonetheless, the data owner cannot timely update the shared data all the while. To ensure the timeliness and the authoritative source of the data, some users should be allowed to update the data on behalf of an authoritative data owner without changing data source. However, this allows harmful information to be injected into the data unnoticeably. How to efficiently realize editable cloud-based data sharing supporting malicious user tracing has not been fully explored. To address the problem, we propose a fine-grained and controllably editable cloud-based data sharing scheme …

Val: Volume And Access Pattern Leakage-Abuse Attack With Leaked Documents, Steven Lambregts, Huanhuan Chen, Jianting Ning, Kaitai Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searchable Encryption schemes provide secure search over encrypted databases while allowing admitted information leakages. Generally, the leakages can be categorized into access and volume pattern. In most existing SE schemes, these leakages are caused by practical designs but are considered an acceptable price to achieve high search efficiency. Recent attacks have shown that such leakages could be easily exploited to retrieve the underlying keywords for search queries. Under the umbrella of attacking SE, we design a new Volume and Access Pattern Leakage-Abuse Attack (VAL-Attack) that improves the matching technique of LEAP (CCS ’21) and exploits both the access and volume …

Are Managed Retreat Programs Successful And Just? A Global Mapping Of Success Typologies, Justice Dimensions, And Trade-Offs, Idowu Ajibade, Meghan Sullivan, Chris Lower, Lizzie Yarina, Allie Reilly

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

As managed retreat programs expand across the globe, there is an urgent need to assess whether these programs are reducing exposure to climatic hazards, enhancing adaptive capacity, and improving the living conditions of communities in a just and equitable manner or are they exacerbating existing risks and vulnerabilities? Strictly speaking, are retreat programs successful? Using an expansive intersectional justice approach to examine 138 post-resettlement case studies published between 2000 and 2021 across the Global North and South, we identified five typologies of success – techno-managerial, eco-restorative, compensatory, reformative, and transformative – and their trade-offs and synergies. Our meta-analysis incorporated a …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Twenty-four full-scale tests were carried out in order to investigate the post-fire behaviour of UHPCFST stub columns under axial compression after being exposed to elevated temperatures. The test parameters include cross-sectional size, heating mode, steel fibre content, and coarse aggregate content. The failure modes, cross-sectional historical maximum temperatures, axial load-deformation curves, and residual compressive capacities of the specimens are analysed. The test results revealed non-uniform and nonlinear distributions of the cross-sectional historical-max temperatures. It is found that the effect of historical temperature on the residual capacity of a UHPCFST column is more obvious with the increase of the heating rate …
