Symptoms Of Maternal Psychological Distress During Pregnancy: Sex-Specific Effects For Neonatal Morbidity, Sandra J. Weiss, Joseph Musana Sep 2022

Symptoms Of Maternal Psychological Distress During Pregnancy: Sex-Specific Effects For Neonatal Morbidity, Sandra J. Weiss, Joseph Musana

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Objectives: Maternal psychological distress during pregnancy has been associated with preterm birth. However, little is known about the relationship of a woman’s psychological symptoms during pregnancy to the infant’s morbidity at birth or any differential effects of these symptoms on female vs. male fetuses. Our research aims addressed these gaps.

Methods: A total of 186 women were enrolled between 24 and 34 weeks gestation when demographic information was acquired and they completed the Brief Symptom Inventory to measure psychological distress. Data on gestational age at birth, fetal sex, and neonatal morbidity was extracted from the medical record. To control for …

First Place Winner

I have always found myself inspired by the work of other female filmmakers, specifically those who portray common themes of motherhood. In the creation of my short documentary film “Almost Mother,” I chose to represent the concept of motherhood through the lens of miscarriage.

Claiming Power In African American Women Storytelling, Heather Bergeson Sep 2022

Claiming Power In African American Women Storytelling, Heather Bergeson

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

Beginning with slave narratives and continuing to the contemporary day, black autobiographers have shared and perpetuated the values and experiences of their communities through the medium of stories, which seek to expose perspectives that are often withheld or overshadowed by white voices. Tracy K. Smith’s memoir Ordinary Light participates in this tradition as she writes about her experiences as an African American woman in the United States. Near the text’s close, Smith asserts that storytelling is an act of “claiming the power to name and state and face the events, even the most awful events, making up a life” (279). …

Judith: A Literary Analysis Of A Female Legend, Contrasting Biblical And Medieval Elements, Celisa Fullmer Young Sep 2022

Judith: A Literary Analysis Of A Female Legend, Contrasting Biblical And Medieval Elements, Celisa Fullmer Young

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

It’s not every day that a youthfully beautiful maiden commits manslaughter. Then again, it’s not every day that an unarmed, outnumbered band of would-be martyrs conquers world-class military threats. And it’s not every day that violence promotes peace, or that vice masks the victory of virtue. Yet these are the ageless anachronisms that have shaped both our social reality and our beloved legends, the unanticipated underdogs. “Ic him ealdor oðþrong,” Judith said humbly of her malignant captor, “I took his life” (Cooper 9). This eponymous, 10th century war- hero—a seemingly obscure Hebrew woman—turned the tide of a critical battle between …

Let’S Hear It For The Homemakers, Margaret Ross Sep 2022

Let’S Hear It For The Homemakers, Margaret Ross

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

Many people are undervalued in our society. Prejudice has been forced into the light in recent years and people are now actively warring against it. As a society and world, we need equality. We need protection for those who can’t protect themselves. Pushing out prejudice is a must. People should have opportunities to live the life they want, but oftentimes when we “push out prejudice,” we are only replacing it with prejudice towards another group. We have seen this countless times in society, but there is one branch in particular that I would like to focus on, The Homemaker. To …

Anorexic Behaviors And Spirituality In Medieval Holy Women, Amanda Reece Sep 2022

Anorexic Behaviors And Spirituality In Medieval Holy Women, Amanda Reece

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

This body of mine remains without any food, without even a drop of water: in such sweet physical tortures as I never at any time endured; insomuch that my life hangs by a thread.” At only thirty three years old Saint Catherine of Siena lay in an almost constant state of hallucination, unable to stand, and on the verge of death. Saint Catherine lived the majority of her life in a near constant state of starvation as a form of suffering for religious worship, but four months before her death, she expressed she had lost the ability to take water …

On Divinity, Amy Griffin

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

It’s a world-famous cathedral, and I’m there, alone. Alone except for the tourists around me, who don’t count because I didn’t come here with them. Didn’t fly over the Atlantic with them. Alone except for the Instagram influencers next to me at the prayer candles, one onscreen talent and the other there to make the magic happen. On-screen has taken off her cardigan to reveal large breasts, leaning forward to make them pop. She opens her mouth slightly to let the candle glow reflect off her lip gloss. She turns her head from side to side, letting her camera-woman’s phone-in-hand …

Priestesses, Prophets, And Paradox: Ceramic Relationships Between Ancient Israel And A Queer Latter-Day Saint, Maddison Tenney Sep 2022

Priestesses, Prophets, And Paradox: Ceramic Relationships Between Ancient Israel And A Queer Latter-Day Saint, Maddison Tenney

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

As a Queer Latter-Day Saint, I often get asked the questions, “Why do you stay in Provo” or “Why do you stay at BYU?” and ultimately, “Why do you stay in the Church?” For me, one of the biggest reasons why I stay here is the depth of history of women who also explored liminal spaces within feminism, art, and the Church since its beginnings here in Utah. This discourse is important to me, and it feels deeply meaningful. So, when I started this project, I felt specifically drawn to create something that reflected the legacy of foremothers working in …

Examining Drivers’ Behaviors To Connected And Automated Vehicles, Hany Hassan, Taniya Sultana Sep 2022

Examining Drivers’ Behaviors To Connected And Automated Vehicles, Hany Hassan, Taniya Sultana

Publications

It is envisioned that Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) are the future of transportation as they can assist in minimizing some inefficiencies with the current transport systems. However, it is not clear how drivers of conventional vehicles would interact with CAVs in a mixed traffic environment containing both CAVs and human driven vehicles (HDVs). Thus, this study aims to investigate drivers’ behaviors towards CAVs through driving simulation experiment and national survey study. Two on-ramp and two off-ramp driving simulation scenarios were designed where drivers were asked to merge with two-lane highway in presence of HDVs and CAVs truck platoon in …

Using The Provider Authoritarian Attitude Scale, Breakthrough Research Sep 2022

Using The Provider Authoritarian Attitude Scale, Breakthrough Research

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

The Breakthrough RESEARCH project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development, developed a set of measures to reflect authoritarian attitudes of providers. These measures were validated in three phases, including quantitative field testing and improvement of survey items using qualitative cognitive interviews. This process resulted in a reliable scale consisting of 14 items (α = 0.8323)1 reflecting authoritarian attitudes related to provider attitudes about clients, their professional roles, and gender roles, and can be applied across health areas. This technical reference sheet provides information to monitoring, evaluation, and research practitioners on the resulting 14-item scale (in English and …

Impact Of High, Low, And Non-Optimum Temperatures On Chronic Kidney Disease In A Changing Climate, 1990-2019: A Global Analysis, Li He, Baode Xue, Bo Wang, Ce Liu, David Gimeno Ruiz De Porras, George L Delclos, Ming Hu, Bin Luo, Kai Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Although a few studies have reported the relationship between high and low temperatures and chronic kidney disease (CKD), the global burden of CKD attributable to extreme heat and cold in recent decades remains unknown.

METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019, we obtained data on age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and age-standardized rates of disability-adjusted life years (ASDR) per 100 000 population of the CKD attributable to non-optimum temperatures from 1990 to 2019. The annual mean temperature of each country was used to divide each country into five climate zones (tropical, subtropical, warm-temperate, cool-temperate, and boreal). …

Agreement Between Sars-Cov-2 Pcr Test Results Using Nasopharyngeal And Mid-Turbinate Specimens Among Asymptomatic Working-Age Adults, Judy Wendt Hess, Faiyaz Bhojani, Derrick Cameron, Mary Freire De Carvalho, Fayaz Momin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether mid-turbinate specimens reliably detect active infection in asymptomatic adults undergoing regular COVID-19 PCR testing.

METHODS: Qualitative agreement between 2481 paired nasopharyngeal and mid-turbinate PCR results was assessed. Mean cycle threshold values for each positive result were evaluated as an indicator of active infection.

RESULTS: Overall agreement between nasopharyngeal and mid-turbinate tests was 98.4%. Positive percent agreement was 37.2%, and negative percent agreement was ~100%. Test pairs with lower cycle thresholds (≤30 and ≤25) reached 67% and 100% positive percent agreement, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2 infections with high viral loads were detected …

Irrigation Decisions In Response To Groundwater Salinity In Kansas, Juhee Lee, Nathan P. Hendricks Sep 2022

Irrigation Decisions In Response To Groundwater Salinity In Kansas, Juhee Lee, Nathan P. Hendricks

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the interaction between groundwater salinity and irrigation decision making has important implications for groundwater management. Econometrics models were estimated using observed farmer behavior in response to different groundwater salinity levels in a region of Kansas. Estimation results demonstrate that farmers in the face of groundwater salinity change their irrigation decisions on irrigated acreage (i.e., extensive margin), crop choice (i.e., indirect intensive margin), and water application depth (i.e., direct intensive margin). The empirical results indicate an overall decrease in water use due to higher salinity, primarily through a decrease at the extensive margin.

A Heuristic Outlook On The Occupational Accidents Of Food & Beverage Staff In Hotels, Gulsah Akkus, Aytug Arslan, Merve Iscen, Burcu Isik

Journal of Global Business Insights

The labor-intensive structure, 24/7 service availability, diversity of departments including kitchens, housekeeping, and technical services, the high labor turnover ratios, along with the long working hours and shift systems inherent in accommodation establishments all play a role in the occurrence of occupational accidents (OA). Fundamental reasons underlying OA are unsafe behavior and unsafe working conditions. This study analyzes with a qualitative method the OA that occur in the food & beverage (F&B) service department of accommodation establishments from the viewpoint of employees. The study concludes that the majority of these accidents are not high risk, and generally result from unsafe …

Measuring Environmental Responsible Behavior Through Experience Quality, Perceived Value, And Tourist Satisfaction From The Perspectives Of Tourists In Natural Sites, Anil Kumar, Suman Lata

Journal of Global Business Insights

This study aims to examine environmentally responsible behavior through experience quality, perceived value, and tourist satisfaction while explaining responsible behavior of tourists towards the environment in the natural sites of Madhya Pradesh, India. The theoretical framework proposed is based on literature. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed using partial least squares (PLS) 3.0 software to test the model fit and hypotheses. The data was collected using random sampling from 131 tourists at these natural sites who participated in the survey through a questionnaire. The analysis showed a good fit for the environmentally responsible behavior study model. The results suggested that …

Why New Zealand’S Indigenous Reconciliation Process Has Failed To Empower Māori Fishers: Distributional, Procedural, And Recognition-Based Injustices, Hekia Bodwitch, Andrew M. Song, Owen Temby, John Reid, Megan Bailey, Gordon M. Hickey

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

How is it that the New Zealand government’s process for re-establishing Indigenous fishing rights has failed to deliver thriving Māori fisheries? This paper examines why, at Te Waihora, a coastal lake, and site of one of the nation’s longest running and best-funded state-Māori co-governance agreements, Māori fishers have been unable to use their rights to support their fishery. As of 2018, the lake’s culturally and ecologically significant eel population was no longer commercially viable, a decline fishers have attributed to rampant dairy industry expansion upstream. Drawing on environmental justice literatures, we deploy a multi-dimensional framework to identify factors shaping possibilities …

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Gait alterations after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are commonly reported and have been linked to posttraumatic osteoarthritis development. While knee gait alterations have been studied at several time points after ACLR, little is known about how these biomechanical variables change earlier than 6 months after surgery, nor is much known about how they differ over the entire stance phase of gait. The purpose of this study was to examine knee gait biomechanical variables over their entire movement pattern through stance at both 3 and 6 months after ACLR and to study the progression of interlimb asymmetry between the two …

Lived Religion In A Digital Age: Technology, Affect And The Pervasive Space-Times Of “New” Religious Praxis, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong, Siew Ying Shee

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper explores how Christian practices of prayer are being reconfigured through digital media in Singapore. Although digital technologies are an area of burgeoning interest amongst social and cultural geographers, the ways in which these technologies reconfigure the space-times of religious praxis and engender new affective relations or subjectivities of religion have not yet been embraced. This paper fills the lacuna by bringing existing studies on religion, technology and affect into constructive conversation with each other. By elaborating on digital prayer as an affective assemblage of religious practice, we show how digital technologies blur institutional boundaries and create new affordances …

Desert Arcologies And Path Dependencies, Sayd Randle Sep 2022

Desert Arcologies And Path Dependencies, Sayd Randle

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In Phoenix, Arizona last year, the local high temperature topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit on 145 days, a new record. Of those 145, 53 days saw top temperatures above 110 and 14 days exceeded 115 – also new peaks. Taken together, these numbers strongly suggest that to live out 2020 in Phoenix was to inhabit an environment sliding towards a painful, and perhaps even hellish, new baseline. Of course, numbers are known to occlude at least as much as they reveal. But in the case of Arizona’s largest metropolitan area, they’re useful for framing a certain conventional wisdom about the place: …
