Visualizing Politics In Indonesia: The Design And Distribution Of Election Posters, Colm A. Fox Sep 2022

Visualizing Politics In Indonesia: The Design And Distribution Of Election Posters, Colm A. Fox

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Where studies have shown that visuals are the primary means of political communication, research continues to focus largely on text-based information. To add to our understanding of visual-political communications, this article analyses Indonesian election posters since the 1950s. Drawing on historical materials and on a content analysis of 4,000 election posters, it asks why election posters have been designed and distributed in particular ways. Findings indicate that in the past, posters used singular, though powerful, social symbols to mobilize demographic groups behind political parties. However, contemporary posters are more visually complex and more candidate-centered, making arguments as to what the …

In Covid-19 Health Messaging, Loss Framing Increases Anxiety With Little-To-No Concomitant Benefits: Experimental Evidence From 84 Countries, Charles A. Dorison, Et. Al., Andree Hartanto Sep 2022

In Covid-19 Health Messaging, Loss Framing Increases Anxiety With Little-To-No Concomitant Benefits: Experimental Evidence From 84 Countries, Charles A. Dorison, Et. Al., Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message …

A Traitor-Resistant And Dynamic Anonymous Communication Service For Cloud-Based Vanets, Huiying Hou, Jianting Ning, Yunlei Zhao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud-based VANETs are designed to enable communication between high-speed vehicles. In such a highly dynamic environment, how to provide secure and anonymous communication service is a challenge. In this article, we affirmatively address the challenge by proposing a traitor-resistant and dynamic anonymous communication framework (TD-ACF) for cloud-based VANETs, which supports several advantageous features. In TD-ACF, each vehicle is represented by a set of attributes instead of its real identity, and the driving data is transmitted in encrypted form. Therefore, the anonymous authentication and the confidentiality of driving data are achieved in this way. Meanwhile, TD-ACF supports two practical requirements in …

Fine-Grained And Controllably Editable Data Sharing With Accountability In Cloud Storage, Huiying Hou, Jianting Ning, Yunlei Zhao, Robert H. Deng Sep 2022

Fine-Grained And Controllably Editable Data Sharing With Accountability In Cloud Storage, Huiying Hou, Jianting Ning, Yunlei Zhao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increasing cloud storage service, users can enjoy non-interactive data sharing. Nonetheless, the data owner cannot timely update the shared data all the while. To ensure the timeliness and the authoritative source of the data, some users should be allowed to update the data on behalf of an authoritative data owner without changing data source. However, this allows harmful information to be injected into the data unnoticeably. How to efficiently realize editable cloud-based data sharing supporting malicious user tracing has not been fully explored. To address the problem, we propose a fine-grained and controllably editable cloud-based data sharing scheme …

Val: Volume And Access Pattern Leakage-Abuse Attack With Leaked Documents, Steven Lambregts, Huanhuan Chen, Jianting Ning, Kaitai Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searchable Encryption schemes provide secure search over encrypted databases while allowing admitted information leakages. Generally, the leakages can be categorized into access and volume pattern. In most existing SE schemes, these leakages are caused by practical designs but are considered an acceptable price to achieve high search efficiency. Recent attacks have shown that such leakages could be easily exploited to retrieve the underlying keywords for search queries. Under the umbrella of attacking SE, we design a new Volume and Access Pattern Leakage-Abuse Attack (VAL-Attack) that improves the matching technique of LEAP (CCS ’21) and exploits both the access and volume …

Lived Religion In A Digital Age: Technology, Affect And The Pervasive Space-Times Of “New” Religious Praxis, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong, Siew Ying Shee Sep 2022

Lived Religion In A Digital Age: Technology, Affect And The Pervasive Space-Times Of “New” Religious Praxis, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong, Siew Ying Shee

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper explores how Christian practices of prayer are being reconfigured through digital media in Singapore. Although digital technologies are an area of burgeoning interest amongst social and cultural geographers, the ways in which these technologies reconfigure the space-times of religious praxis and engender new affective relations or subjectivities of religion have not yet been embraced. This paper fills the lacuna by bringing existing studies on religion, technology and affect into constructive conversation with each other. By elaborating on digital prayer as an affective assemblage of religious practice, we show how digital technologies blur institutional boundaries and create new affordances …

Desert Arcologies And Path Dependencies, Sayd Randle Sep 2022

Desert Arcologies And Path Dependencies, Sayd Randle

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In Phoenix, Arizona last year, the local high temperature topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit on 145 days, a new record. Of those 145, 53 days saw top temperatures above 110 and 14 days exceeded 115 – also new peaks. Taken together, these numbers strongly suggest that to live out 2020 in Phoenix was to inhabit an environment sliding towards a painful, and perhaps even hellish, new baseline. Of course, numbers are known to occlude at least as much as they reveal. But in the case of Arizona’s largest metropolitan area, they’re useful for framing a certain conventional wisdom about the place: …

Infrared Thermography In The Built Environment: A Multi-Scale Review, Miguel Martin, Adrian Chong, Filip Biljecki, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The paper presents a review on major contributions in infrared thermography to study the built environment at multiple scales. To elaborate the review, hundreds of studies conducted between the 1980s and 2020s were first selected based on their relevance to the scope. Afterward, the most relevant contributions were classified and chronologically sorted. From the classification, it is observed that most reviewed studies were conducted to evaluate the thermal performance of buildings or detect their defects using images collected by an infrared camera. At the same time, a considerable number of studies used thermal images obtained by a satellite to observe …

Posterior-Based Wald-Type Statistic For Hypothesis Testing, Xiaobin Liu, Yong Li, Jun Yu, Tao Zeng Sep 2022

Posterior-Based Wald-Type Statistic For Hypothesis Testing, Xiaobin Liu, Yong Li, Jun Yu, Tao Zeng

Research Collection School Of Economics

A new Wald-type statistic is proposed for hypothesis testing based on Bayesian posterior distributions under the correct model specification. The new statistic can be explained as a posterior version of the Wald statistic and has several nice properties. First, it is well-defined under improper prior distributions. Second, it avoids Jeffreys–Lindley–Bartlett’s paradox. Third, under the null hypothesis and repeated sampling, it follows a distribution asymptotically, offering an asymptotically pivotal test. Fourth, it only requires inverting the posterior covariance for parameters of interest. Fifth and perhaps most importantly, when a random sample from the posterior distribution (such as MCMC output) is available, …

Constrained Multiagent Reinforcement Learning For Large Agent Population, Jiajing Ling, Arambam James Singh, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar Sep 2022

Constrained Multiagent Reinforcement Learning For Large Agent Population, Jiajing Ling, Arambam James Singh, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning control policies for a large number of agents in a decentralized setting is challenging due to partial observability, uncertainty in the environment, and scalability challenges. While several scalable multiagent RL (MARL) methods have been proposed, relatively few approaches exist for large scale constrained MARL settings. To address this, we first formulate the constrained MARL problem in a collective multiagent setting where interactions among agents are governed by the aggregate count and types of agents, and do not depend on agents’ specific identities. Second, we show that standard Lagrangian relaxation methods, which are popular for single agent RL, do not …

Risk-Aware Procurement Optimization In A Global Technology Supply Chain, Jonathan Chase, Jingfeng Yang, Hoong Chuin Lau Sep 2022

Risk-Aware Procurement Optimization In A Global Technology Supply Chain, Jonathan Chase, Jingfeng Yang, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supply chain disruption, from ‘Black Swan’ events like the COVID-19 pandemic or the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to more ordinary issues such as labour disputes and adverse weather conditions, can result in delays, missed orders, and financial loss for companies that deliver products globally. Developing a risk-tolerant procurement strategy that anticipates the logistical problems incurred by disruption involves both accurate quantification of risk and cost-effective decision-making. We develop a supplier-focused risk evaluation metric that constrains a procurement optimization model for a global technology company. Our solution offers practical risk tolerance and cost-effectiveness, accounting for a range of constraints that realistically …

Analyzing The Impact Of Covid-19 Control Policies On Campus Occupancy And Mobility Via Wifi Sensing, Camellia Zakaria, Amee Trivedi, Emmanuel Cecchet, Michael Chee, Prashant Shenoy, Rajesh Krishna Balan Sep 2022

Analyzing The Impact Of Covid-19 Control Policies On Campus Occupancy And Mobility Via Wifi Sensing, Camellia Zakaria, Amee Trivedi, Emmanuel Cecchet, Michael Chee, Prashant Shenoy, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile sensing has played a key role in providing digital solutions to aid with COVID-19 containment policies, primarily to automate contact tracing and social distancing measures. As more and more countries reopen from lockdowns, there remains a pressing need to minimize crowd movements and interactions, particularly in enclosed spaces. Many COVID-19 technology solutions leverage positioning systems, generally using Bluetooth and GPS, and can theoretically be adapted to monitor safety compliance within dedicated environments. However, they may not be the ideal modalities for indoor positioning. This article conjectures that analyzing user occupancy and mobility via deployed WiFi infrastructure can help institutions …

Learning To Solve Multiple-Tsp With Time Window And Rejections Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Rongkai Zhang, Cong Zhang, Zhiguang Cao, Wen Song, Puay Siew Tan, Jie Zhang, Bihan Wen, Justin Dauwels Sep 2022

Learning To Solve Multiple-Tsp With Time Window And Rejections Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Rongkai Zhang, Cong Zhang, Zhiguang Cao, Wen Song, Puay Siew Tan, Jie Zhang, Bihan Wen, Justin Dauwels

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a manager-worker framework (the implementation of our model is publically available at: https://github.com/zcaicaros/manager-worker-mtsptwr) based on deep reinforcement learning to tackle a hard yet nontrivial variant of Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP), i.e. multiple-vehicle TSP with time window and rejections (mTSPTWR), where customers who cannot be served before the deadline are subject to rejections. Particularly, in the proposed framework, a manager agent learns to divide mTSPTWR into sub-routing tasks by assigning customers to each vehicle via a Graph Isomorphism Network (GIN) based policy network. A worker agent learns to solve sub-routing tasks by minimizing the cost in terms of both …

Learning Improvement Heuristics For Solving Routing Problems, Yaoxin Wu, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang, Andrew Lim Sep 2022

Learning Improvement Heuristics For Solving Routing Problems, Yaoxin Wu, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang, Andrew Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent studies in using deep learning to solve routing problems focus on construction heuristics, the solutions of which are still far from optimality. Improvement heuristics have great potential to narrow this gap by iteratively refining a solution. However, classic improvement heuristics are all guided by hand-crafted rules which may limit their performance. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning framework to learn the improvement heuristics for routing problems. We design a self-attention based deep architecture as the policy network to guide the selection of next solution. We apply our method to two important routing problems, i.e. travelling salesman …

Gapdh Mediates Drug Resistance And Metabolism In Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria Parasites, Andrew J. Jezewski, Ann M. Guggisberg, Dana M. Hodge, Naomi Ghebremichael, Gavin Nicholas John, Lisa K. Mclellan, Audrey Ragan Odom John Sep 2022

Gapdh Mediates Drug Resistance And Metabolism In Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria Parasites, Andrew J. Jezewski, Ann M. Guggisberg, Dana M. Hodge, Naomi Ghebremichael, Gavin Nicholas John, Lisa K. Mclellan, Audrey Ragan Odom John

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Efforts to control the global malaria health crisis are undermined by antimalarial resistance. Identifying mechanisms of resistance will uncover the underlying biology of the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites that allow evasion of our most promising therapeutics and may reveal new drug targets. We utilized fosmidomycin (FSM) as a chemical inhibitor of plastidial isoprenoid biosynthesis through the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway. We have thus identified an unusual metabolic regulation scheme in the malaria parasite through the essential glycolytic enzyme, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). Two parallel genetic screens converged on independent but functionally analogous resistance alleles in GAPDH. Metabolic profiling of FSM-resistant …

Distance Based Image Classification: A Solution To Generative Classification’S Conundrum?, Wen-Yan Lin, Siying Liu, Bing Tian Dai, Hongdong Li Sep 2022

Distance Based Image Classification: A Solution To Generative Classification’S Conundrum?, Wen-Yan Lin, Siying Liu, Bing Tian Dai, Hongdong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most classifiers rely on discriminative boundaries that separate instances of each class from everything else. We argue that discriminative boundaries are counter-intuitive as they define semantics by what-they-are-not; and should be replaced by generative classifiers which define semantics by what-they-are. Unfortunately, generative classifiers are significantly less accurate. This may be caused by the tendency of generative models to focus on easy to model semantic generative factors and ignore non-semantic factors that are important but difficult to model. We propose a new generative model in which semantic factors are accommodated by shell theory’s [25] hierarchical generative process and non-semantic factors by …

Secure Deterministic Wallet And Stealth Address: Key-Insulated And Privacy-Preserving Signature Scheme With Publicly Derived Public Key, Zhen Liu, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Khoa Nguyen, Huaxiong Wang, Xiaorong Ke, Yining Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deterministic Wallet (DW) and Stealth Address (SA) mechanisms have been widely adopted in the cryptocurrency community, due to their virtues on functionality and privacy protection, which come from a key derivation mechanism that allows an arbitrary number of derived keys to be generated from a master key. However, these algorithms suffer a vulnerability that, when one derived key is compromised somehow, the damage is not limited to the leaked derived key only, but to the master key and in consequence all derived keys are compromised. In this article, we introduce and formalize a new signature variant, called Key-Insulated and Privacy-Preserving …

Cancer cachexia (CC) accounts for 20%–40% of cancer-related deaths. Mitochondrial aberrations have been shown to precede muscle atrophy in different atrophy models, including cancer. Therefore, this study investigated potential protection from the cachectic phenotype through overexpression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1 α (PGC-1α). First, to establish potential of mitochondria-based approaches we showed that the mitochondrial antioxidant MitoTEMPO (MitoT) attenuates myotube atrophy induced by Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell conditioned media. Next, cachexia was induced in muscle-specific PGC-1α overexpressing (MCK-PCG1α) or wildtype (WT) littermate mice by LLC implantation. MCK-PCG1α did not protect LLC-induced muscle mass loss. In plantaris, Atrogin mRNA …

Logics' Shift And Depletion Of Innovation: A Multi-Level Study Of Agile Use In A Multinational Telco Company, Maria Carmela Annosi, Elisa Mattarelli, Evelyn Micelotta, Antonella Martini

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The use of Agile practices is typically associated to a wide array of benefits for organizations. This paper extends growing research on the ‘dark’ side of Agile by investigating the depletion of innovation in a large telco company following the large-scale implementation of Agile in R&D units. Our qualitative study reveals a shift in the organizational logics underpinning new product development, from a “navigating through unchartered waters” to a “putting out fires” logic. We tracked the change in key components of logics (goals of teams, source of legitimacy of team members and support and control systems) and explained the multi-level …

Geography And Election Outcome Metric: An Introduction, Marion Campisi, Thomas Ratliff, Stephanie Somersille, Ellen Veomett

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We introduce the Geography and Election Outcome (GEO) metric, a new method for identifying potential partisan gerrymanders. In contrast with currently popular methods, the GEO metric uses both geographic information about a districting plan as well as district-level partisan data, rather than just one or the other. We motivate and define the GEO metric, which gives a count (a non-negative integer) to each political party. The count indicates the number of previously lost districts which that party potentially could have had a 50% chance of winning, without risking any currently won districts, by making reasonable changes to the input map. …

New Historians And The American Revolution: Are Their Interpretations Really That New?, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A new wave of progressive historians have not only challenged older accounts of the American Revolution but portrayed their interpretations as overturning an overwhelmingly dominant mainstream consensus or as revealing ignored but essential aspects of the revolution. These historians sometimes associate their own work with the New York Times’ controversial 1619 Project. In this article, I examine the writings of two such historians: William Hogeland and Woody Holton. In contrast to their popular articles, their purely scholarly works do not in fact support the sweeping factual claims of the 1619 Project. While both these historians have their own unique perspective, …
