Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article analyzes the current state of memory politics in Latvian society in the frame of Baltic postcolonial studies. The dominant traumatic experience of contemporary Latvian society is the period of Soviet occupation (1940, renewed 1944, lasting until 1991) and WWII. The so-called “Monument of Victory” in Riga was the central site of memory, loaded with mnemonic tension and ambiguity of collective memories of the Russian-speakers in the restored nation state. After it was toppled on August 25, 2022, the monument continues to exist in Russian-speakers’ digital imagination and is framed by the semiotics of a sacred site of memory. …

There are too few perspectives in civilizational analysis that examine Latin America. One exception is found in the work of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt on multiple modernities and the Americas. Eisenstadt’s research is a point of departure for Michela Coletta’s Decadent Modernity: Civilization and ‘Latinidad’ in Spanish America, 1880-1920. My friend groups have always been ethnically and racially diverse. Once, while pouring over pictures from my quinceañera celebration, my mom laughed and pointed out that my friend group could be on the cover of a magazine that celebrates diversity. I think that children of immigrants understand each other on an instinctive level, so we flock to each other. Regardless of mom’s and dad’s countries, we feel this shared sense of displacement. We’re too different from “typical American” kids, and we’re “too American” when we go back to our parents’ countries. For most of my life, this feeling went unsaid.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort.

OBJECTIVE: A review of efficiency and safety of fluoroscopy and stereotactic navigation system for minimally invasive (MIS) Sacroiliac (SI) fusion through a lateral technique.

METHODS: Retrospective analysis of an observational cohort of 96 patients greater than 18 years old, that underwent MIS SI fusion guided by fluoroscopy or navigation between January 2013 and April 2020 with a minimum of 3 months follow-up. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) with a variable combination of electromyography (EMG), somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) was also utilized.

The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Managing the flow of excavated materials from a mine pit and the subsequent processing steps is the logistical challenge in mining. Mine planning needs to consider various geometric and resource constraints while maximizing the net present value (NPV) of profits over a long horizon. This mine planning problem has been modelled and solved as a precedence constrained production scheduling problem (PCPSP) using heuristics, due to its NP-hardness. The corpus of 223 news articles has been collected from Bangladeshi newspaper, The Daily Star from November 2017 to November 2019, after the repatriation deal between Bangladesh and Myanmar on 23 November 2017. Subgraph enumeration is important for many applications such as network motif discovery, community detection, and frequent subgraph mining. To accelerate the execution, recent works utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) to parallelize subgraph enumeration. The performances of these parallel schemes are dominated by the set intersection operations which account for up to $95\%$ of the total processing time. (Un)surprisingly, a significant portion (as high as $99\%$) of these operations is actually redundant, i.e., the same set of vertices is repeatedly encountered and evaluated. Developing a risk-tolerant procurement strategy that anticipates the logistical problems incurred by disruption involves both accurate quantification of risk and cost-effective decision-making. Recently, increased number of studies have demonstrated a relationship between the oral microbiome and development of head and neck cancer, however, there are few studies to investigate the role of oral bacteria in the context of the tumor microenvironment in a single head and neck subsite. Here, paired tumor and adjacent normal tissues from thirty-seven oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients were subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing and whole exome sequencing (WES), in addition to RNA sequencing for tumor samples. The COVID-19 crisis has encouraged many countries to amend their insolvency laws. In most cases, these amendments took place temporarily, especially during the hibernation phase of the pandemic. In other countries, however, the pandemic has led to permanent changes in their insolvency legislation. More importantly, the COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the insolvency reforms that were already on the political agenda of many countries, and it has encouraged other jurisdictions to reassess the desirability of their insolvency and restructuring frameworks. Where studies have shown that visuals are the primary means of political communication, research continues to focus largely on text-based information. To add to our understanding of visual-political communications, this article analyses Indonesian election posters since the 1950s. Drawing on historical materials and on a content analysis of 4,000 election posters, it asks why election posters have been designed and distributed in particular ways. Findings indicate that in the past, posters used singular, though powerful, social symbols to mobilize demographic groups behind political parties. However, contemporary posters are more visually complex and more candidate-centered, making arguments as to what the …
