Our study examines whether CEOs’ birth order can predict firms’ credit ratings. Consistent with studies that document a positive relationship in the general population between being firstborn and being conservative, our study finds that firms managed by firstborn CEOs tend to have higher credit ratings than those managed by later-born CEOs. Our results are robust to controlling for additional personal CEO traits, such as political identity, and to using a propensity score matching sample. A change analysis supports the causality of the firstborn effect. We suggest that return on assets and free cash flow are possible channels through which firstborn …

A core region is the first place for expected shifts in archaeological materials before, during, and after political changes like state emergence and imperial consolidation. Yet, studies of ceramic production have shown that there are sometimes limited or more subtle changes in the ceramic economy throughout such political fluctuations. This article synthesizes recent efforts to address political economic changes via geochemical characterization (neutron activation analysis; NAA) in the Lake Pátzcuaro Basin in western Mexico. Although rodents have represented the most intensely studied animals in neurobiological investigations for more than a century, few studies have systematically compared neural and endocrine differences between wild rodents in their natural habitats and laboratory strains raised in traditional laboratory environments. In the current study, male and female Rattus norvegicus rats were trapped in an urban setting and compared to weight-and sex-matched conspecifics living in standard laboratory housing conditions. Brains were extracted for neural assessments and fecal boli were collected for endocrine [corticosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)] assays. Self-Gravitating Clusters Of Fermi-Dirac Gas With Planar, Cylindrical, Or Spherical Symmetry: Evolution Of Density Profiles With Temperature, Michael Kirejczyk, Gerhard Müller, Pierre-Henri Chavanis

We calculate density profiles for self-gravitating clusters of an ideal Fermi-Dirac gas with nonrelativistic energy-momentum relation and macroscopic mass at thermal equilibrium. Our study includes clusters with planar symmetry in dimensions D=1,2,3, clusters with cylindrical symmetry in D=2,3, and clusters with spherical symmetry in D=3. Wall confinement is imposed where needed for stability against escape. The length scale and energy scale in use render all results independent of total mass and prove adequate at all temperatures. We present exact analytic expressions for (fully degenerate) T=0 density profiles in four of the six combinations of symmetry and dimensionality. Our numerical results …

Introduction: Chronic proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) prescription is on the rise in the last decade with an increased prevalence in the elderly population. For most patients, this class of drugs is the primary treatment for various diseases. Even though PPIs are generally safe, long-term use has been associated with multiple adverse effects like bone fractures. The extent of the association between PPI and fracture is still unclear in women aged between 50 and 65 years. Besides, many other variables and risk factors must be accounted for in the analysis of this relation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the effortful swallow maneuver under two different instructions on tongue-to-palate pressure and hyolaryngeal displacement in healthy adults. Studying typical kinematic parameters and pressure generation in healthy individuals is critical for differentiating normal from pathological patterns and for determining swallowing parameters that can be targeted to optimize and individualize treatment plans for people with swallowing disorders. Humans transmit cultural information to others in a variety of ways that can affect productivity, cultural success, and ultimately fitness. Not all potential transmitters are expected to be equally preferred by learners or equally willing to influence their culture acquisition. Across socioeconomic opportunities and ages in the human life course, costs and benefits to both learners and potential transmitters are expected to vary, affecting rates of culture transmission from different vectors. Here we examine reported patterns of culture transmission contributing to 92 essential skills among a sample of 421 Tsimane forager-farmers native to Bolivia. Quinoa is being evaluated in cropping systems in many countries outside of its natural range of South America. Very few attempts have been made by farmers or researchers to grow or evaluate quinoa under Australian environments. The nineteen species of Cybocephalidae (Coleoptera) occurring in North America and the West Indies (including Trinidad) are listed and keyed. Cybocephalus skelleyi new species and Cybocephalus edmondsoni new species are described, and Cybocephalus carrabeus T. R. Smith is found to be a new syn­onym of Cybocephalus geoffereysmithi T. R. Smith. Illustrations of morphological features, including detailed drawings of male genitalia, host records and distribution data, are provided.

1898 marked the beginning of U.S. colonialism in the Philippines and the formation of the Oregon Historical Society (OHS), an organization that would later inherit a vast collection of Philippine and Spanish war booty from the defunct Battleship Oregon Museum. This thesis will explore the meaning of this war booty by recreating the context around its collection, accession, interpretation, and later descent into obscurity, drawing on the Battleship Oregon Collection of the OHS Research Library and institutional records of the OHS Museum as well as secondary sources that explore the colonial context around museum collecting. A Patient With Erdheim-Chester Disease Limited To Central Nervous System, Rajesh K Gupta, Anam Haque, Thejasvi A Reddy, Carlos A Pérez

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare, sporadic, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a multisystem disorder, which has higher mortality when presented with CNS involvement. We report a 46-year-old woman who has ECD with exclusive CNS involvement. She presented with intracranial hemorrhage and had a poor response to corticosteroid and interferon. She required multiple debulking procedures and eventually responded well to cobimetinib. She has not had any other organ involvement thus far. This report highlights that CNS involvement may be the only manifestation of ECD and sometimes may require a repeat biopsy with IHC testing for excellent treatment outcomes.
