Subcortical-Cortical Dynamical States Of The Human Brain And Their Breakdown In Stroke, Chiara Favaretto, Michele Allegra, Gustavo Deco, Nicholas V Metcalf, Joseph C Griffis, Gordon L Shulman, Andrea Brovelli, Maurizio Corbetta

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The mechanisms controlling dynamical patterns in spontaneous brain activity are poorly understood. Here, we provide evidence that cortical dynamics in the ultra-slow frequency range (<0.01-0.1 Hz) requires intact cortical-subcortical communication. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at rest, we identify Dynamic Functional States (DFSs), transient but recurrent clusters of cortical and subcortical regions synchronizing at ultra-slow frequencies. We observe that shifts in cortical clusters are temporally coincident with shifts in subcortical clusters, with cortical regions flexibly synchronizing with either limbic regions (hippocampus/amygdala), or subcortical nuclei (thalamus/basal ganglia). Focal lesions induced by stroke, especially those damaging white matter connections between basal ganglia/thalamus and cortex, provoke anomalies in the fraction times, dwell times, and transitions between DFSs, causing a bias toward abnormal network integration. Dynamical anomalies observed 2 weeks after stroke recover in time and contribute to explaining neurological impairment and long-term outcome.

Accumulation of missense mutant p53 (mutp53) in cancers promotes malignant progression. DNAJA1, a member of HSP40 (also known as J-domain proteins: JDPs), is shown to prevent misfolded or conformational mutp53 from proteasomal degradation. Given frequent addiction of cancers to oncogenic mutp53, depleting mutp53 by DNAJA1 inhibition is a promising approach for cancer therapy. However, there is no clinically available inhibitor for DNAJA1. Our in silico molecular docking study with a natural compound-derived small molecule library identified a plumbagin derivative, PLIHZ (plumbagin-isoniazid analog), as a potential compound binding to the J domain of DNAJA1. PLIHZ efficiently reduced the levels of DNAJA1 …

A New Technique For Solving Neutral Delay Differential Equations Based On Euler Wavelets, Mutaz Mohammad, Alexander Trounev Aug 2022

A New Technique For Solving Neutral Delay Differential Equations Based On Euler Wavelets, Mutaz Mohammad, Alexander Trounev

All Works

An effective numerical scheme based on Euler wavelets is proposed for numerically solving a class of neutral delay differential equations. The technique explores the numerical solution via Euler wavelet truncated series generated by a set of functions and matrix inversion of some collocation points. Based on the operational matrix, the neutral delay differential equations are reduced to a system of algebraic equations, which is solved through a numerical algorithm. The effectiveness and efficiency of the technique have been illustrated by several examples of neutral delay differential equations. The main advantages and key role of using the Euler wavelets in this …

A Most Christian King: Church And State During The Reign Of Henry Iii Of England, Mason Gerald Smith Aug 2022

A Most Christian King: Church And State During The Reign Of Henry Iii Of England, Mason Gerald Smith

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The reign of Henry III (1216-1272) was one of many firsts. The first reign under the Magna Carta, a watershed reign for relations with the Papacy, and demonstrated the degree to which Church and State were integrally united during his reign, to the degree that it is anachronistic to speak of them as two separate institutions. The reign of Henry III was marked by religious sensibility from the beginning of his reign in the minority, shepherded by his regents: Papal Legates and his educator Bishop Peter Des Roches. Henry’s life reflected his position in relation to the English Kingdom and …

Comorbidity Of Novel Crhr2 Gene Variants In Type 2 Diabetes And Depression, Mutaz Amin, Jurg Ott, Derek Gordon, Rongling Wu, Teodor T Postolache, Michael Vergare, Claudia Gragnoli

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

The corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 2 (CRHR2) gene encodes CRHR2, contributing to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal stress response and to hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. CRHR2-/- mice are hypersensitive to stress, and the CRHR2 locus has been linked to type 2 diabetes and depression. While CRHR2 variants confer risk for mood disorders, MDD, and type 2 diabetes, they have not been investigated in familial T2D and MDD. In 212 Italian families with type 2 diabetes and depression, we tested 17 CRHR2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), using two-point parametric-linkage and linkage-disequilibrium (i.e., association) analysis (models: dominant-complete-penetrance-D1, dominant-incomplete-penetrance-D2, recessive-complete-penetrance-R1, recessive-incomplete-penetrance-R2). We detected novel linkage/linkage-disequilibrium/association …

Do Educators Value The Promotion Of Students’ Wellbeing? Quantifying Educators’ Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion, David Byrne, Colm Mcguinness Phd, Aiden Carthy Phd

Articles

Educators’ attitudes toward Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and health and wellbeing promotion can significantly influence the success (or otherwise) of such policies and practices. While numerous studies exist, from which a broad understanding of such attitudes can be garnered, there is currently no attendant measurement which quantifies educators attitudes regarding the promotion of student wellbeing. The aim of this study was to address this gap in knowledge by quantifying the degree to which educators are positively or negatively disposed to the promotion of student wellbeing. The Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion (ATWP) scale was administered …

Are Women With Disabilities Less Likely To Utilize Essential Maternal And Reproductive Health Services?-A Secondary Analysis Of Pakistan Demographic Health Survey, Shafaq Mahmood, Waqas Hameed, Sameen Siddiqi

Community Health Sciences

Background: People with disabilities deal with widespread exclusion from healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights. Studies analyzing the relationship between disability and key SRH utilization outcomes have often reported mixed findings. In Pakistan, very little to no literature is available on this topic, therefore we aim to determine inequalities in the utilization of essential maternal and reproductive health services between women with and without disabilities in Pakistan.
Methods: This was a secondary analysis of Pakistan Demographic Health Survey 2017-18 performed on a weighted sample of 6,711 women aged 15-49 years with a live birth in the 5 …

Modeling Radiation Belt Electrons With Information Theory Informed Neural Networks, Simon Wing, Drew L. Turner, Aleksandr Y. Ukhorskiy, Jay R. Johnson, Thomas Sotirelis, Romina Nikoukar, Giuseppe Romeo

Faculty Publications

An empirical model of radiation belt relativistic electrons (μ = 560–875 MeV G−1 and I = 0.088–0.14 RE G0.5) with average energy ∼1.3 MeV is developed. The model inputs solar wind parameters (velocity, density, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) |B|, Bz, and By), magnetospheric state parameters (SYM-H and AL), and L*. The model outputs the radiation belt electron phase space density (PSD). The model is operational from L* = 3 to 6.5. The model is constructed with neural networks assisted by information theory. Information theory is used to select the most effective and relevant solar …

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease associated with eosinophilic infiltration, increased mucus production, airway hyperresponsiveness, and airway remodeling. Epidemiologic data reveal that the prevalence of allergic sensitization and associated diseases has increased in the twentieth century. This has been hypothesized to be partly due to reduced contact with microbial organisms (the hygiene hypothesis) in industrialized society. Airway epithelial cells, once considered a static physical barrier between the body and the external world, are now widely recognized as immunologically active cells that can initiate, maintain, and restrain inflammatory responses, such as those that mediate allergic disease. Airway epithelial cells …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The underground geo-storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential component of the carbon capture and sequestration value chain. The success of CO2 containment depends on the wetting state of the rock, which controls the mechanism of fluid flow and distribution. The presence of organic acids in the storage formation introduces a considerable effect on the wettability of the rock / CO2 / brine system under various temperature and pressure conditions. Despite the previous studies on this topic, the impact of the substrate pores, the rock surface roughness, and the solvents used to prepare the organic …
