American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a medicinal plant native to eastern North America. Though the plant has a history of Indigenous use, wild American ginseng roots have been commercially harvested, primarily for export to east Asia, since the 18th century. There is a long history of harvesting ginseng in Appalachia as a source of supplementary income, as living-wage jobs in the region have historically been scarce. Today, harvesters can make hundreds of dollars per pound of dried, wild-harvested American ginseng roots. However, ginseng populations in the wild today are thought to be substantially smaller than their historical peak, which …

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people communicate, live, socialize and perhaps the way they feel about the Asian population. The United States has seen a rise in the Asian hate crimes on online and offline platforms since the beginning of the pandemic which has affected the overall well-being of the Asian population. To our knowledge, the present study is one of the first studies to address the effects of COVID 19-related online perceived racial discrimination on the self-esteem of Asians. Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

1. Rangelands of the United States provide ecosystem services that benefit society and rural economies. Native tree encroachment is often overlooked as a primary threat to rangelands due to the slow pace of tree cover expansion and the positive public perception of trees. Still, tree encroachment fragments these landscapes and reduces herbaceous production, thereby threatening habitat quality for grassland wildlife and the economic sustainability of animal agriculture.
