Labor Market Efficiency And Youth Unemployment In The Mena Region, Wasseem Mina Sep 2022

Labor Market Efficiency And Youth Unemployment In The Mena Region, Wasseem Mina

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

The Arab countries of the MENA region adopted a state-led development path in the sixties and seventies. Since then, the government and the public sector have become the main owners of factors of production and labor force employers (Cammett et al., 2015). Salehi-Isfahani (2012) projected high youth unemployment rate to be a key challenge. The purpose of this paper is to qualitatively discuss the development of youth unemployment over time in the Arab world and empirically examine the determinants of youth unemployment. Data shows that high youth unemployment is a challenge. Using system GMM estimation methodology and panel data on …

Why Angiotensin Ii Is A Poor Choice For Circulatory Support Of Ventilated Covid-19 Patients Compared To Vasopressin, Robert C. Speth, Michael Bader Sep 2022

Why Angiotensin Ii Is A Poor Choice For Circulatory Support Of Ventilated Covid-19 Patients Compared To Vasopressin, Robert C. Speth, Michael Bader

HPD Articles

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic when it was first reported that SARS-CoV-2 used membrane-bound angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) as its receptor for entry into cells, warnings were raised against the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) because of their potential to increase ACE2 expression. These reports ignored the adverse effects that the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) exerts on the cardiovascular system and kidneys via its primary hormone angiotensin (Ang) II acting upon AT receptors that could exacerbate the cytokine storm induced by SARS-CoV-2 . At one point it was even recommended that COVID-19 patients suffering from cardiovascular …

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection remains a significant challenge for arthroplasty surgeons globally. Over the last few decades, there has been much advancement in terms of treatment and diagnosis, however, the fight rages on. As management of periprosthetic joint infections continues to evolve, it is critical to reflect back on current debridement practices to establish common ground as well as identify areas for future research and improvement. BODY: In order to understand the debridement techniques of periprosthetic joint infections, one must also understand how to diagnose a periprosthetic joint infection. Multiple definitions have been elucidated over the years with no single …

Hematology/Oncology Meeting Abstracts

Background: The inhibitory Notch ligand, delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3), is a compelling therapeutic target due to its aberrant expression on the cell surface in most small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Tarlatamab (AMG 757) is a half-life extended bispecific T-cell engager (HLE BiTE®) molecule designed to specifically bind DLL3 on target cancer cells and CD3 on T cells, resulting in T cell-dependent killing of tumor cells. Data from an ongoing first-in-human monotherapy study show acceptable safety with evidence of tarlatamab efficacy in patients with relapsed/refractory SCLC (NCT03319940). Adding programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors to first-line platinum chemotherapy is the emerging …

1544p Pre-Treatment Ct Radiomics Predicts Survival In Chemo-Immunotherapy-Treated Small Cell Lung Cancer, Joseph Bae, Prateek Prasanna, Shirish M. Gadgeel

Hematology/Oncology Meeting Abstracts

Background: The addition of checkpoint inhibitors to chemotherapy in SCLC patients provides modest benefit, with a median survival of 12 months. Development of non-invasive imaging predictors to identify patients most likely to benefit from chemo-immunotherapy would enable personalized management of SCLC.

Methods: A cohort of 31 extensive-stage SCLC patients treated with atezolizumab, carboplatin, and etoposide from June 2020 to May 2021 were identified and pre-treatment CT scans were curated. The axial slice at the level of the carina (S1) was identified and center-cropped. 304 3D radiomic features from 5 slices surrounding S1 were extracted for analysis. After feature selection, the …

Hematology/Oncology Meeting Abstracts

Background: The advent of screening chest computed tomography (CT) for high-risk patients has increased the patient population presenting with early-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC). While surgical resection continues to be standard of care, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is an option for non-surgical candidates. Although the effectiveness of PCI in patients with limited stage SCLC has been well established, decreasing the brain metastasis incidence from approximately 70% to 30%, the role of PCI in early-stage SCLC (T1-T2) has not been fully elucidated. This study reports our experience omitting PCI in early-stage SCLC.

Objectives: This study reports our experience omitting …

Book Review: Hans-Joachim Gehrke, Ed. Making Civilizations: The World Before 600, Robert Bedeski Sep 2022

Book Review: Hans-Joachim Gehrke, Ed. Making Civilizations: The World Before 600, Robert Bedeski

Comparative Civilizations Review

Studying ancient civilizations is not a precise enterprise, and many statements are approximations, subject to validation or dispute. Several key concepts describe the flow and progress of collective human development. Individuals, families, clans, and tribes precede formation of civilization, which provides the foundation for states. Governments are managerial organizations of more complex societies, providing concentrated focus on defense, currency and infrastructure. Civilizations improve life security as urbanization, innovation, and division of labor increase, requiring more complex and powerful governing institutions.

An Analysis Of Selling Concessions, Reallowance Fees, And Price Changes In The Marketing Of Ipos, James C. Brau, Joseph J. Henry Sep 2022

An Analysis Of Selling Concessions, Reallowance Fees, And Price Changes In The Marketing Of Ipos, James C. Brau, Joseph J. Henry

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper provides an economic model resulting in two distinct marketing strategies available to investment bankers. First, we hypothesize that an increased selling effort by brokers is used most effectively when the investment clientele is uninformed. Second, adjusting the offer price of the issue is hypothesized to be employed primarily in large IPOs with a clientele of sophisticated investors, consistent with Shiller’s Impresario Hypothesis. Our pre-IPO bubble (1981-1996) empirical results yield evidence supporting both selling mechanisms. Under-demanded small IPO issues are ‘pushed’ by the brokers, while some under-demanded large IPO issues instead increase the offer price, with large first-day turnover …

Conceptualizing The Campus Culture: The Significance Of Cultural Artifacts, Ryan Theroux, Derek Furukawa

New York Journal of Student Affairs

Cultural artifacts convey meanings and messages to members of a campus community that provide insights into the culture of a college. Artifacts may include physical, behavioral, or verbal phenomena that one identifies in the culture of an institution. While studies of culture on college campuses have been conducted through anthropological, organizational, and academic lenses, it is still unclear how cultural artifacts are categorized within higher education literature and why this may be important. Based on a review of literature from multiple disciplines and institutional examples, the authors present a categorization and conceptual framework of cultural artifacts found on college campuses. …

Freedom Of Peaceful Assembly And Section 2(C) Of The Charter: Report For The Public Order Emergency Commission, Jamie Cameron Sep 2022

Freedom Of Peaceful Assembly And Section 2(C) Of The Charter: Report For The Public Order Emergency Commission, Jamie Cameron

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

Those who participated in the 2022 protest convoy were exercising their rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms when the federal government declared an emergency, creating a large secure zone and dispersing the truckers’ demonstration. These rights, including and especially freedom of peaceful assembly, form the backdrop to consideration of the federal government’s decision to declare an emergency under the Emergencies Act and enact regulations for bringing the demonstrations to an end.

Though it is one of the Charter’s fundamental freedoms, s.2(c)’s freedom of peaceful assembly received little or no attention in the first 40 years of …

Why Best-Worst Method Works Well, Sean Aguilar, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2022

Why Best-Worst Method Works Well, Sean Aguilar, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many cases, experts are much more accurate when they estimate the ratio of two quantities than when they estimate the actual values. For example, if it difficult to accurately estimate the height of a person on a photo, but if we have two people standing side by side, we can easily estimate to what extent one of them is taller than the other one. To get accurate estimates, it is therefore desirable to use such ratio estimates. Empirical analysis shows that to obtain the most accurate results, we need to compare all the objects with either the "best" object …

How Hot Is Too Hot, Sofia Holguin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A recent study has shown that the temperature threshold -- after which even young healthy individuals start feeling the effect of heat on their productivity -- is 30.5 ± 1 C. In this paper, we use decision theory ideas to provide a theoretical explanation for this empirical finding.

Invariance Explains Empirical Success Of Many Intelligent Techniques, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2022

Invariance Explains Empirical Success Of Many Intelligent Techniques, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many applications of intelligent computing, we need to choose an appropriate function -- e.g., an appropriate re-scaling function, or an appropriate aggregation function. In applications of intelligent techniques, the problem of selecting an optimal function is usually too complex or too imprecise to be solved analytically, so the best functions are found empirically, by trying a large number of alternatives. In this paper, we show that in many such cases, the resulting empirical choice can be explained by natural invariance ideas. Example range from applications to building blocks of intelligent techniques -- such as aggregation (including hierarchical aggregation) and …

Why Exponential Almon Lag Works Well In Econometrics: An Invariance-Based Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many econometric situations, we can predict future values of relevant quantities by using an empirical formula known as exponential Almon lag. While this formula is empirically successful, there have been no convincing theoretical explanation for this success. In this paper, we provide such a theoretical explanation based on general invariance ideas.

Seemingly Counter-Intuitive Features Of Good-To-Great Companies Actually Make Perfect Sense: Possible Algorithmics-Based Explanations, Francisco Zapata, Eric Smith, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the late 1990s, researchers analyzed what distinguishes great companies from simply good ones. They found several features that are typical for great companies. Interestingly, most of these features seem counter-intuitive. In this paper, we show that from the algorithmic viewpoint, many of these features make perfect sense. Some of the resulting explanations are simple and straightforward, other explanations rely on complex not-well-publicized results from theoretical computer science.

Optical Selection Bias And Projection Effects In Stacked Galaxy Cluster Weak Lensing, Hao-Yi Wu Sep 2022

Optical Selection Bias And Projection Effects In Stacked Galaxy Cluster Weak Lensing, Hao-Yi Wu

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cosmological constraints from current and upcoming galaxy cluster surveys are limited by the accuracy of cluster mass calibration. In particular, optically identified galaxy clusters are prone to selection effects that can bias the weak lensing mass calibration. We investigate the selection bias of the stacked cluster lensing signal associated with optically selected clusters, using clusters identified by the redMaPPer algorithm in the Buzzard simulations as a case study. We find that at a given cluster halo mass, the residuals of redMaPPer richness and weak lensing signal are positively correlated. As a result, for a given richness selection, the stacked lensing …
