Team incentives are important in many compensation systems that pay workers according to the output of their team as well as to their own output, with team bonuses often depending on whether the team meets or exceeds specified thresholds. Yet little is known about how team members with different abilities respond to compensation rules and thresholds. We contrast the performance of lower ability participants and higher ability participants in an experiment with three distribution schemes – equal sharing, piece rate sharing, and tournament style winner-takesall – in settings with and without a team threshold. Already ancients noticed that decrease is usually faster than growth -- whether we talk about companies or empires. A modern researcher Ugo Bardi confirmed that this phenomenon is still valid today. He called it Seneca effect, after the ancient philosopher Seneca -- one of those who observed this phenomenon. In this paper, we provide a natural explanation for the Seneca effect.

The keynote presented the development of institutional repositories (IR) by universities in Singapore. The relevant policies on open access and research data were introduced. The importance of IR alignment with institutional goals was highlighted. Besides research publications, IRs could also host special collections of the institution or the community. The collaboration and sharing of best practices among Singapore academic libraries helped them to better support research at their institutions.

Arising from experiences during and post-COVID-19 circuit breaker and work-from-home arrangements, SMU Libraries developed a new library service to provide remote access to financial databases that are usually only accessible onsite. Financial databases such as Bloomberg and Eikon are accessed using a client-based software that is installed on a physical computer in the Investment Studio at Li Ka Shing Library. Using desktop virtualization technology, financial databases can be accessed remotely without the need of physical presence in the library, increasing availability and accessibility to the resources. The principle of social justice is central to the newly regulated profession of Social Care Worker [SCW] in Ireland and the language of social justice features in the Standards of Proficiency [SoP] and Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics [CPCE]. This is very welcome given the history of institutional neglect and abuse in Irish social care. Ketone bodies are energy-rich metabolites and signaling molecules whose production is mainly regulated by diet. Caloric restriction (CR) is a dietary intervention that improves metabolism and extends longevity across the taxa. We found that CR induced high -amplitude daily rhythms in blood ketone bodies (beta-hydroxybutyrate [beta OHB]) that correlated with liver beta OHB level. Time-restricted feeding, another periodic fasting-based diet, also led to rhythmic beta OHB but with reduced amplitude. CR induced strong circadian rhythms in the expression of fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis genes in the liver. Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) prevalence is reported as high as 90%. Cancer-related fatigue is multidimensional and associated with lower health-related quality of life. Effective screening and assessment are dependent upon use of valid, reliable, and clinically feasible measures. This Executive Summary of the Screening and Assessment of Cancer-related Fatigue Clinical Practice Guideline provides recommendations for best measures to screen and assess for CRF based on the quality and level of evidence, psychometric strength of the tools, and clinical utility.

Hebbian theory proposes that ensembles of neurons form a basis for neural processing. It is possible to gain insight into the activity patterns of these neural ensembles through a binary analysis, regarding neurons as either active or inactive. The framework of permitted and forbidden sets, introduced by Hahnloser, Seung, and Slotine (2003), is a mathematical model of such a binary analysis: groups of coactive neurons can be permitted or forbidden depending on the network's structure.

In order to widen the applicability of the framework of permitted sets, we extend the permitted set analysis from the original threshold-linear regime. …

We explored the potential of digital financial education programs among Hispanic populations, through the design and evaluation of a mobile phone delivered digital program called Mind Your Money (MYM). This program sought to improve financial knowledge and behavior among low- to-moderate income Hispanics residing in the Greater Los Angeles area. We assessed the program through a randomized controlled trial with a wait-list control group. Our digital financial education program had a higher retention rate than comparable in-person financial coaching programs. We found that our program had a positive statistical significant effect on financial capability. Participants who completed program activities were …

The clinical use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is limited by their poor water solubility, unstable absorption, and low bioavailability. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) exhibit high biocompatibility and the ability to improve the bioavailability of drugs with low water solubility. Therefore, in this study, a tolfenamic acid solid lipid nanoparticle (TA-SLN) suspension was prepared by a hot melt–emulsification ultrasonication method to improve the sustained release and bioavailability of TA. The encapsulation efficiency (EE), loading capacity (LC), particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential of the TA-SLN suspension were 82.50 ± 0.63%, 25.13 ± 0.28%, 492 ± 6.51 nm, 0.309 ± …
