From Indians In Trinidad To Indo-Trinidadians: The Making Of A Girmitiya Diaspora, N Jayaram

This book explores the dynamics of the socio-cultural baggage that Indian indentured migrants took with them to the Caribbean island of Trinidad and how they have since become a vibrant diaspora community, namely the Indo-Trinidadians. It combines social history with first-hand fieldwork data to portray human ingenuity in terms of social reconstitution and community building in a hostile socio-cultural environment. Furthermore, it addresses key social institutions—religion, caste, and family—and cultural elements—language, foodways, and ethnicity. Its analytical framework is guided by the concept of metamorphosis; it steers clear of the persistence versus change hypotheses. Given its focus, it will be of …

Reviews

Recent legal scholarship has shed needed light on the vast universe of litigation that occurs without lawyers. Large majorities of civil litigants lack representation, even in weighty matters such as eviction and termination of parental rights, raising a host of issues worthy of scholarly attention. For example, one recent article has examined racial and gendered effects of the lack of constitutionally guaranteed counsel in civil matters, and another has shown that judges tend not to reduce the complexity of the proceedings for the benefit of unrepresented parties. Degrees Of Temporal Remoteness In Pano: Contribution To The Cross-Linguistic Study Of Tense, Pilar Valenzuela, Sanderson Castro Soares De Oliveira

Beyond simply indicating future or past tense, the languages of the Pano family grammatically distinguish various degrees of temporal distance relative to a reference point, typically the moment of utterance; i.e., they possess what has been called ‘metrical tense’ (Chung & Timberlake 1985; Frawley 1992), ‘degrees of remoteness’ (Comrie 1985; Dahl 1985; Bybee et al. 1994; Botne 2012), or ‘graded tense’ (Cable 2013). This article offers a comparative analysis of the rich graded tense systems found in Pano, concentrating on morphologically expressed categories. Objective:The purpose of this study is to improve the extraction rate of total flavonoids from the leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam. and evaluate their in vitro antibacterial and antioxidant capacity. Methods:The extraction of total flavonoids from the leaves of M. oleifera Lam. from Baoshan city was optimized by Box-Behnken response surface methodology, and its antibacterial and antioxidant activities were evaluated. Results: The optimal conditions for microwave-assisted extraction of total flavonoids from leaves of M. oleifera Lam. were solid-liquid ratio1∶29 (g/mL), microwave power 567 W, microwave time3.6 min and ethanol fraction 50%, and the highest extraction rate of total …

Gardner-Webb Receives One Of 12 Grants For Faculty-Student Stem Mentoring, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb University’s Student Success Division has received a three-year grant totaling $25,000 from North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). The N.C. GlaxoSmithKline Foundation provided the funds to establish faculty-student STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) mentoring programs, and NCICU awarded grants to 12 member institutions. The programs are designed to improve student retention and graduation rates among first generation college students, women, and students of color majoring in a STEM field.

The Bear Essentials

Bear Essentials is an online newsletter published by the Student Activities Council of Des Moines Area Community College. The newsletter was established in early 2020 when DMACC closed its facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic. The newsletter covers topics such as upcoming virtual activities and events, college resources, and community service opportunities. When asked about the origins of the newsletter, Student Activities Advisor Erin Smith said, "We wanted students to know they were not alone, the entire DMACC Community was coming together to help support one another in any way possible."

Tidal marshes are among the most valuable, productive, and vulnerable ecosystems with high biodiversity. Louisiana’s saltmarshes are endangered by natural and man-made stressors, including oil pollution, saltwater intrusion, and land loss due to sea level rise and erosion. Freshwater diversions have been planned to restore sediment input from the Mississippi River to rebuild marsh habitats in South Louisiana. These proposed diversions will undoubtedly change salinity levels, which is a major controlling factor in the distribution of marsh organisms, including those in soil; however, detailed pre-event inventories are lacking. Discovery And Validation Of Grain Shape Loci In U.S. Rice Germplasm Through Haplotype Characterization, Brijesh Angira, Tommaso Cerioli, Adam N. Famoso

Rice grain shape is a major determinant of rice market value and the end-use. We mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) for grain shape traits in a bi-parental recombinant inbred line population (Trenasse/Jupiter) and discovered two major grain length QTLs—qGL3.1 and qGL7.1. Previously, a major grain shape gene GS3 was reported in the qGL3.1 region and grain length gene GL7 was reported to be encompassing qGL7.1 locus. The re-sequencing SNP data on the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) 3K Rice Genome Project (RGP) panel were obtained from the IRRI SNP-Seek database for both genes and haplotype diversity was characterized for each …
