Relapsed or refractory pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with poor outcomes and relapse risk prediction approaches have not changed significantly in decades. To build a robust transcriptional risk prediction model for pediatric AML, we perform RNA-sequencing on 1503 primary diagnostic samples. While a 17 gene leukemia stem cell signature (LSC17) is predictive in our aggregated pediatric study population, LSC17 is no longer predictive within established cytogenetic and molecular (cytomolecular) risk groups. Therefore, we identify distinct LSC signatures on the basis of AML cytomolecular subtypes (LSC47) that were more predictive than LSC17. Based on these findings, we build a …

Conference Papers
We introduce the problem of technical debt, with particular focus on critical infrastructure, and put forward our view that this is a digital ethics issue. We propose that the software engineering process must adapt its current notion of technical debt – focusing on technical costs – to include the potential cost to society if the technical debt is not addressed, and the cost of analysing, modelling and understanding this ethical debt. Finally, we provide an overview of the development of educational material – based on a collection of technical debt case studies - in order to teach about technical debt …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Mucopolysaccharidoses comprise a set of genetic diseases marked by an enzymatic dysfunction in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans in lysosomes. There are eight clinically distinct types of mucopolysaccharidosis, some with various subtypes, based on which lysosomal enzyme is deficient and symptom severity. Patients with mucopolysaccharidosis can present with a variety of symptoms, including cognitive dysfunction, hepatosplenomegaly, skeletal abnormalities, and cardiopulmonary issues. Additionally, the onset and severity of symptoms can vary depending on the specific disorder, with symptoms typically arising during early childhood. While there is currently no cure for mucopolysaccharidosis, there are clinically approved therapies for the management of clinical symptoms, …

MAX phases are the parent materials used for the formation of MXenes, and are generally obtained by etching using the highly corrosive acid HF. To develop a more environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of MXenes, in this work, titanium aluminum carbide MAX phase (Ti2AlC) was fabricated and etched using NaOH. Further, magnetic properties were induced during the etching process in a single-step etching process that led to the formation of a magnetic composite. By carefully controlling etching conditions such as etching agent concentration and time, different structures could be produced (denoted as M.Ti2CTx). Magnetic nanostructures with unique physico-chemical characteristics, …

How Much Does The Board Composition Matter? The Impact Of Board Gender Diversity On Ceo Compensation, T Nawaz
How Much Does The Board Composition Matter? The Impact Of Board Gender Diversity On Ceo Compensation, T Nawaz
Plymouth Business School
The notion that female directors are better disposed to protect shareholders’ interests has brought boardroom gender diversity into the limelight. Echoing these emerging trends, this paper analyzes the relationship between board gender diversity, i.e., proportion of female directors on the corporate board, and Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) compensation. Consistent with conjecture, the analysis suggests that large and diversified corporate boards are the main determinants of CEO compensation. Furthermore, longer-tenured CEOs who also serve as board chairperson receive higher total compensation and bonuses than their counterparts do. Into the bargain are corporate performance proxied by return of assets (ROA) and firm …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs) initiate a diverse array of physiological responses by carefully orchestrating intracellular calcium (Ca2+) signals in response to various external cues. Notably, IP3R channel activity is determined by several obligatory factors, including IP3, Ca2+, and ATP. The critical basic amino acid residues in the N-terminal IP3-binding core (IBC) region that facilitate IP3 binding are well characterized. In contrast, the residues conferring regulation by Ca2+ have yet to be ascertained. Using comparative structural analysis of Ca2+-binding sites identified in two main families of intracellular Ca2+-release channels, ryanodine receptors (RyRs) and IP3Rs, we identified putative acidic residues coordinating Ca2+ …

Nonuniversality Of Quantum Noise In Optical Amplifiers Operating At Exceptional Points, L. Simonson, S. K. Ozdemir, A. Eisfeld, A. Metelmann, R. El-Ganainy
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The concept of exceptional points-based optical amplifiers (EPOAs) has been recently proposed as a new paradigm for miniaturizing optical amplifiers while simultaneously enhancing their gain-bandwidth product. While the operation of this new family of amplifiers in the classical domain provides a clear advantage, their performance in the quantum domain has not yet been evaluated. Particularly, it is not clear how the quantum noise introduced by vacuum fluctuations will affect their operation. Here, we investigate this problem by considering three archetypal EPOA structures that rely either on unidirectional coupling, parity-time symmetry, or particle-hole symmetry for implementing the exceptional point. By using …
Nethnography, Complementing Netnography: A Defensible Praxis For The Online Researcher, Martin Maccarthy
Nethnography, Complementing Netnography: A Defensible Praxis For The Online Researcher, Martin Maccarthy
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article issues a challenge for interpretive tourism researchers to consider the trove of online data currently disavowed by aficionados of Netnography. Non-dyadic social media data is used by researchers but has been devalued as lacking legitimacy. However, by combining ‘lifeless’ non-dyadic social media with lesser-engaged ethnographic methods a lived proxy can be achieved. Nethnography is a two-part qualitative praxis of spending enough time with the phenomenon to discern meanings with confidence, which is then used to interpret non-dyadic textual discourse. Lesser-engaged ethnographic methods include participants as observers, observers as participants and complete observers. A fourth legitimizer of online interpretation …

Poka-Yoke Mechanism For Drums Of Powder For 3d Printing, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
In the 3D printing facilities with selective powder fusing technology printers, different types of fresh and recovered powder materials are managed. They are visually similar and usually stored in the same type of drums, so it may happen that an operator takes the wrong drum. If a machine is fed with wrong material, the result will be part quality problems, damages in the printer and scrap of expensive material. To avoid these mistakes, the drums can be identified with labels, barcodes or color codes. These are not robust solutions because they are operator dependent. Another solution is RFID identification technology, …

Adjustment Mechanism To Calibrate The Roller Height By Means Of A Differential Screw, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
On an additive manufacturing 3D printer, parts are constructed by forming thin layers of pulverized material and selectively melting or binding it. To have a good part quality it is important to control the distance between the print heads and the powder bed surface. It can be achieved by calibrating the height of the roller with respect the print head carriage with a proper mechanism. In this article, a mechanism is described to precisely calibrate the height of the roller by means of a differential screw combined with a lever to ensure adjustment is fine enough.

Sustainability is one of the hot topics of this decade. Latex inks are a great example of sustainable printing technology, but the energy used by the dryer can be optimized to reduce the consumption. Today most of the dryers use hot‐air, and the energy comes from resistors. The idea is to use a hybrid system to dry the Latex ink thermal energy that comes from hot water solar panels, with additional resistor‐based dryers used only as additional power source in case of cloudy or nightly working hours. The system can be centralized in a printing plant to serve a fleet …

This disclosure describes high-performance techniques of using a client library to access data from OLAP or OLTP databases. Data is transported between the database and the client library in a columnar in-memory format such as Apache Arrow over a binary protocol such as RPC. RPC is significantly faster than REST when receiving data due to the use of protocol Buffers and HTTP/2. In addition, Apache Arrow is zero-copy and does efficient in-memory computations. The stream of data is processed in separate parser threads, thus maximizing concurrency and parallel processing. This makes the client library an order of magnitude faster than …

Estimating Interpupillary Distance From Eyeball Size, Rees Simmons, Idris Aleem
Defensive Publications Series
The interpupillary distance (IPD) of a user’s face is used to frame prescription or non-prescription glasses, or other eyewear. The requirement for an IPD measurement necessitates a physical visit to an optometrist, making online glass (or frame) orders or virtual try-ons (VTO), difficult or infeasible. This disclosure leverages the near constancy of eyeball diameter across the human population to predict the IPD using geometric and/or machine learning techniques. The visible portion of the eyeball (the iris) is used to infer eyeball position. The eyeball position and a priori known size serve as reference dimensions to determine the IPD and/or dimensions …
