The Use Of Non-Model Drosophila Species To Study Natural Variation In Tor Pathway Signaling, Tessa Steenwinkel, Kailee K. Hamre, Thomas Werner Sep 2022

The Use Of Non-Model Drosophila Species To Study Natural Variation In Tor Pathway Signaling, Tessa Steenwinkel, Kailee K. Hamre, Thomas Werner

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Nutrition and growth are strongly linked, but not much is known about how nutrition leads to growth. To understand the connection between nutrition through the diet, growth, and proliferation, we need to study the phenotypes resulting from the activation and inhibition of central metabolic pathways. One of the most highly conserved metabolic pathways across eukaryotes is the Target of Rapamycin (TOR) pathway, whose primary role is to detect the availability of nutrients and to either induce or halt cellular growth. Here we used the model organism Drosophila melanogaster (D. mel.) and three non-model Drosophila species with different dietary needs, Drosophila …

BACKGROUND: The comparative effectiveness of glucose-lowering medications for use with metformin to maintain target glycated hemoglobin levels in persons with type 2 diabetes is uncertain.

METHODS: In this trial involving participants with type 2 diabetes of less than 10 years' duration who were receiving metformin and had glycated hemoglobin levels of 6.8 to 8.5%, we compared the effectiveness of four commonly used glucose-lowering medications. We randomly assigned participants to receive insulin glargine U-100 (hereafter, glargine), the sulfonylurea glimepiride, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, or sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor. The primary metabolic outcome was a glycated hemoglobin level, …

Long-Term Neurologic Outcomes Of Covid-19, Evan Xu, Yan Xie, Ziyad Al-Aly

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The neurologic manifestations of acute COVID-19 are well characterized, but a comprehensive evaluation of postacute neurologic sequelae at 1 year has not been undertaken. Here we use the national healthcare databases of the US Department of Veterans Affairs to build a cohort of 154,068 individuals with COVID-19, 5,638,795 contemporary controls and 5,859,621 historical controls; we use inverse probability weighting to balance the cohorts, and estimate risks and burdens of incident neurologic disorders at 12 months following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our results show that in the postacute phase of COVID-19, there was increased risk of an array of incident neurologic sequelae …

Intelligence Collection And The International Law Of The Sea, James Kraska Sep 2022

Intelligence Collection And The International Law Of The Sea, James Kraska

International Law Studies

This article explores the legal implications of intelligence collection operations at sea. It concludes that in terms of the international law of the sea, intelligence collection that occurs outside of the territorial sea is lawful. Furthermore, even intelligence collection by a foreign ship inside the territorial sea, while a violation of State sovereignty, may not violate the law of the sea, per se. Additionally, within the territorial sea, coastal States are limited in the measures they may take against foreign-flagged submarines and surface warships collecting intelligence since those activities do not constitute an armed attack or even the use of …

Multidimensional Analysis And Therapeutic Development Using Patient Ipsc-Derived Disease Models Of Wolfram Syndrome, Rie Asada Kitamura, Kristina G. Maxwell, Kelly Kries, Cris M. Brown, Punn Augsornworawat, Jeffrey R Millman, Fumihiko Urano, Et Al

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Wolfram syndrome is a rare genetic disorder largely caused by pathogenic variants in the WFS1 gene and manifested by diabetes mellitus, optic nerve atrophy, and progressive neurodegeneration. Recent genetic and clinical findings have revealed Wolfram syndrome as a spectrum disorder. Therefore, a genotype-phenotype correlation analysis is needed for diagnosis and therapeutic development. Here, we focus on the WFS1 c.1672C>T, p.R558C variant, which is highly prevalent in the Ashkenazi Jewish population. Clinical investigation indicated that patients carrying the homozygous WFS1 c.1672C>T, p.R558C variant showed mild forms of Wolfram syndrome phenotypes. Expression of WFS1 p.R558C was more stable compared with …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) infiltration is associated with survival, recurrence, and therapeutic response in colorectal cancer (CRC). Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy, which requires CTLs for response, does not work for most CRC patients. Therefore, it is critical to improve our understanding of immune resistance in this disease. We utilized 2391 CRC patients and 7 omics datasets, integrating clinical and genomic data to determine how DNA methylation may impact survival and CTL function in CRC. Using comprehensive molecular subtype (CMS) 1 patients as reference, we found TBX21 to be the only gene with altered expression and methylation that was associated …

Improving Accuracy Of Capacitance Tests For Supercapacitors, Wayne Ando, Amogh Simha Sep 2022

Improving Accuracy Of Capacitance Tests For Supercapacitors, Wayne Ando, Amogh Simha

Defensive Publications Series

Supercapacitors are often controlled by controller chips. Controller chips may also perform tests to determine the ESR and capacitance of the supercapacitors. Some controller chips may not hold the charge/voltage of the supercapacitors at a desired level for a desired amount of time. By changing the settings/parameters of the test, a user may be able to emulate or simulate the behavior of holding the charge/voltage of the supercapacitors at the desired level for the desired amount of time.

Class Size And Self-Esteem As Determinants Of Student Learning Outcomes In Essay Writing, Kehinde Olufemi Ogunyemi Sep 2022

Class Size And Self-Esteem As Determinants Of Student Learning Outcomes In Essay Writing, Kehinde Olufemi Ogunyemi

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study was carried out mainly to investigate the effects of class size and self-esteem on student achievement in—and attitude toward—English essay writing. The study was influenced by earlier research reports indicating that the large class sizes prevalent in Nigerian schools may be detrimental to student academic and emotional well-being. The study employed an ex post facto research design, as no attempt was made to alter the pre-existing conditions in the schools. Three hundred and thirty-five (335) Senior Secondary School 2 students from nine purposively selected schools participated in the study. An achievement test in essay writing (r = …
