Teaching Asian Religions Through Film: Response And Reflections, Robin Rinehart Sep 2022

Teaching Asian Religions Through Film: Response And Reflections, Robin Rinehart

Journal of Religion & Film

This article presents reflections on Chien’s, Richey’s, and Mixon’s articles on the benefits of using film as a component of courses about Asian religions. I first explore how incorporating film can help meet the goals that instructors set as part of their course planning, and then shift to analysis of the various pedagogical strategies Chien, Richey, and Mixon employ, highlighting how the techniques that they use for East Asian religions and Islam can be valuable in teaching about other Asian religions as well.

This paper was part of a panel on “Teaching Asian Religions Through Film” presented at the Association …

Using Film To Teach About Compressed Modernity In East Asian Religions, Jeff Richey Sep 2022

Using Film To Teach About Compressed Modernity In East Asian Religions, Jeff Richey

Journal of Religion & Film

Teaching about East Asian religions all too often presents them as artifacts of the premodern past. This can encourage students to assume that modernization has rendered the East Asian past, especially religious traditions, obsolete. Teaching with contemporary East Asian films is a way to remedy that oversight, challenge that assumption, and bring students into contact with East Asian religious cultures as living traditions in modern societies. Since contemporary East Asian societies have been shaped by what Chang Kyung-sup calls “compressed modernity” – a process by which “economic, political, social and/or cultural changes occur in an extremely condensed manner in respect …

Employing A Chinese Ghost Story To Teach The Syncretism Of Chinese Religions, Gloria I-Ling Chien Sep 2022

Employing A Chinese Ghost Story To Teach The Syncretism Of Chinese Religions, Gloria I-Ling Chien

Journal of Religion & Film

Upon its release in 1987, the Hong Kong blockbuster A Chinese Ghost Story resulted in sequels, adaptations, and two remakes in 2011 and 2020. Despite its popularity, only a few critics have noticed its eclectic representations of Chinese religions, nor has there been any evaluation of its pedagogical potential. This article details how the author employs this 1987 work to teach the syncretism of Chinese religions in an undergraduate course “Asian Religions in Film.” By decoding the embedded concepts, the meanings and history behind “the Jade Garland talisman,” the inclusion of the Diamond Sutra for exorcistic efficacy, and the portrayal …

The Gendered Profession: Resuscitating The Value Of The Male Nurse In The Pre-Health Undergraduate Eye, Madolyn Dolce, Anne Koenig Phd Sep 2022

The Gendered Profession: Resuscitating The Value Of The Male Nurse In The Pre-Health Undergraduate Eye, Madolyn Dolce, Anne Koenig Phd

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Background

Gender Gap: Women represent 88.5% of registered nurses in the U.S. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021)

  • Nurses have been devalued and degraded socially, professionally, and economically, especially with COVID-19 (National Nurses United, 2020).
  • Reflects gender roles and societal perceptions of women as “lesser” and thus nursing is avoided by men.

Role/Goal Congruence Theory

  • According to role congruence theory, social roles direct individuals on their life path, most notably in their career choices (Diekman & Eagly, 2008).
  • Goal congruence theory suggests men and women tend to chase careers that align with agentic or communal goals, respectively (Diekman et al., …

Dodging The Draft: How Military Conscription Targets Disadvantaged Americans, Elizabeth Nichols, David Miller Phd Sep 2022

Dodging The Draft: How Military Conscription Targets Disadvantaged Americans, Elizabeth Nichols, David Miller Phd

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Abstract: Military conscription in the United States has been employed during several U.S. conflicts and American political leaders have always urged citizens, and non-citizens, to step up and defend the United States and its values from oppressors. The “draft” as many call it, is intended to be a fair and impartial system to determine who will be called to service in the armed forces, but historically there have been many flaws in the system that have targeted disadvantaged Americans. As a result of these faults, many groups of Americans have been disproportionately drafted into American conflicts.

Utopian Catholic State Or Murderous Racist State? Sacralization, Myth, And Politics In The Croatian Ustasha State 1941-1945, Nika Burja, Michael Gonzales Phd, Kathryn Statler Phd

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Background Information: Ustasha was the Croatian fascist movement that ruled Independent State of Croatia or NDH from 1941-1945. It was considered a puppet state of Nazi Germany, basing much of its ideology on Nazi racial theory. Like the Nazis, Ustasha deemed Jews, Gypsies, and Slavs to be subhuman and a poison to the pure Croatian nation and thus needed to be removed. In addition to eugenical racial theory, the Ustasha ideology was also heavily influenced by Roman Catholicism.

Research Question: What are the different ways the Ustasha utilized Catholic values, symbols, and rituals, as well as fascist ideas on eugenics …

An Examination Of Peer Group Influence And Gender As Correlates Of Library And Information Science Students’ Attitude Towards Examination Malpractice: Implication For The Development Of Students, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Examination malpractice has become a global cankerworm that has eaten so deep into our educational system and posing a serious threat to total development of students in our educational system. In search of solution to this anti-educational behavior, experts have attributed it to many factors including peer influence on the assumption that birds of a feather flock together and on the axiom; ‘show me your friends and I will tell you who you are’. This study therefore examined the peer group influence and gender as correlates of Library and Information Science students’ attitude towards examination malpractice and it implication for …

An Exploration Of Communities Of Practice In The Stem Teacher Context: What Predicts Ties Of Retention?, Brandon Ofem, Michael Beeth, Jessica Doering, Kathleen Fink, Rebecca Konz, Margaret J. Mohr-Schroeder, Samuel J. Polizzi, Gillian Roehrig, Gregory T. Rushton, Keith Sheppard

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

The STEM teacher workforce in the United States has faced a host of pressing challenges, including teacher shortages, pervasive job dissatisfaction, and high turnover, problems largely attributable to working conditions within schools and districts. These problems have been exacerbated in high-needs districts with fewer resources and more students from low-income communities. Since social network research has shown that workplace relationships are vital for retention, this study investigates the demographic and relational antecedents to what we dub ties of retention. We explore how demographic and relational properties affect the likelihood that teachers have “retention-friendly” networks, characterized by connections important for …

Exploring The Experiences And Perceptions Of 21st Century Leadership Academy Participants, Scott R. Bartholomew, Douglas Lecorchick, Mark Mahoney, Geoffrey Albert Wright

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

The 21st Century Leadership Academy grew out of an effort by the Council of Technology Teacher Education’s (CTTE) Leadership Development Committee to prepare future leaders for the field of Technology & Engineering Education (TEE). Efforts by Drs. Roger Hill (University of Georgia) and Bill Havice (Clemson University) led to the creation, and subsequent implementation, of this leadership academy with support from CTTE (later renamed the Council on Technology & Engineering Teacher Education [CTETE]) and the International Technology & Engineering Education Association (ITEEA). Initially, participation in the leadership academy was focused on early-career university faculty but recruitment was later expanded to …

Teaching Elementary Mathematics With Educational Robotics, Yuling Zhuang, Jonathan K. Foster, Annamarie Conner, Barbara A. Crawford, Tim Foutz, Roger B. Hill

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Current education reforms call for engaging students in learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in an integrative way. This critical case study of one fourth grade teacher investigated the use of educational robots (ER) not only for teaching coding, but as an instructional support in teaching mathematical concepts. To support teachers in teaching coding in an integrative and logical manner, our team developed the Collective Argumentation Learning and Coding (CALC) approach. The CALC approach consists of three elements: choice of task, coding content, and teacher support for argumentation. After a cohort of elementary teachers completed a professional development course, …

Underrepresentation Of Minoritized Groups In Stem Education: A Metasynthesis Review, Kate Neally Sep 2022

Underrepresentation Of Minoritized Groups In Stem Education: A Metasynthesis Review, Kate Neally

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

This metasynthesis review analyzes the possible influences impacting the underrepresentation of People of Color (POC) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Underrepresented minoritized (URM) groups are defined in this article as Black and Latinx populations due to their low representation in STEM education professions (National Science Foundation, 2019). This review explores the possible influences at the high school and undergraduate levels in STEM and education. Previous research has explored the racism impacting the underrepresentation of POC in both STEM and education, but little research has examined the intersectionality of STEM education. The purpose of this metasynthesis review is …
