Natural Variation Of Fructose-1,6-Bisphosphatase In Colias Butterflies, Andrea Blair Stokes
Natural Variation Of Fructose-1,6-Bisphosphatase In Colias Butterflies, Andrea Blair Stokes
Theses and Dissertations
In a process known as the evolutionary recursion, it is possible to follow how adaptation affects natural selection at successive stages of a species’ life cycle. Through studying allele and genotype frequencies of enzymes in glycolysis, a central metabolic pathway, it is possible to document how polymorphisms can shift the evolving functionality of enzymes within or among species. Fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) is an enzyme in gluconeogenesis that converts fructose-1,6-bisphosphate to fructose 6- phosphate. It is also known to convert the unused amino acid carbon skeletons of glycolysis into glycogen storage. Appearing to play a vital role in the acquisition, storage, and …
Memristive Ising Circuits, Vincent James Dowling
Memristive Ising Circuits, Vincent James Dowling
Theses and Dissertations
Resistance random access memory (ReRAM) cells are emerging passive components showing great promise for applications in non-volatile storage, in-memory computing, and neuromorphic circuits, to name a few. Various experimental ReRAM cells have demonstrated excellent characteristics. This includes nanoscale size, short read and write times, and small energy requirements needed to manipulate the information. The main obstacles preventing the widespread adoption of ReRAM technology are significant device-to-device and cycle-to-cycle variability.
In essence, ReRAM cells are resistors with memory whose state (resistance) can be changed by an applied signal such as voltage. Many models were developed for describing their response. These range …

Peromyscus Maniculatus Bairdii And Peromyscus Maniculatus Sonoriensis Polymorphisms, Matthew Dixon Lucius
Theses and Dissertations
Sequencing technology has advanced greatly over the past couple of decades. This has led to many studies developing hypotheses based on genomic data. This requires many genomic studies to have up-to-date information on the species’ or subject’s genome being investigated. If a study does not have accurate or up-to-date background information, then they cannot fully develop their theories that are being established. In this study, I utilize outbred Peromyscus maniculatus, deer mice that are genetically diverse, to record the polymorphisms that are found throughout the Peromyscus maniculatus genome. I first explore the differences between the polymorphisms found in Peromyscus …
Too Feminine For Execution?: Gender Stereotypes And The Media’S Portrayal Of Women Sentenced To Death, Kelsey M. Collins
Too Feminine For Execution?: Gender Stereotypes And The Media’S Portrayal Of Women Sentenced To Death, Kelsey M. Collins
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional gender norms prescribing women as more nurturing and less aggressive than men have led to both the reluctance to view women as capable of violence, as well as a greater willingness to execute men than women in the United States. To make sense of the instances where women are sentenced to death, the media often pathologizes and/or demonizes them. Scholars have found that demonizing and dehumanizing those executed is a necessity to the implementation of capital punishment, both in cases of male and female defendants. To better understand how the news media have framed the gender and racial narratives …

Elucidating The Interdependence Of Motor-Cognitive Development And Performance, Thomas Cade Abrams
Elucidating The Interdependence Of Motor-Cognitive Development And Performance, Thomas Cade Abrams
Theses and Dissertations
As the development of complex coordination and control (i.e., motor development) involves the integration of neuromotor, psychological, social, and cognitive processes (i.e., executive functions), a better understanding of how these processes are embedded and manifest across stages of development throughout the lifespan is needed. The long-term processes associated with the acquisition and development of motor competence (MC), specifically, effortful practice and performance of various locomotor and object control skills, provide direct mechanisms for contributing to executive function (EF) development via different learning-related (e.g., synaptogenesis, hippocampal neurogenesis) as well as exercise-related (e.g., exercise-mediated neurogenesis, angiogenesis) mechanisms. However, traditional MC assessments use …

The Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) serves low-income, first-generation in-state students. The program promotes retention for low-income FGS. It is worthwhile to evaluate whether and to what degree such a program affects IP among FGS. At the beginning and end of the fall semester, 99 OSP first-generation students, general FGS, and non-FGS completed surveys on imposter phenomenon, academic self-efficacy, and test anxiety. Following the quantitative measures, 12 first-generation students participated …
Durability Enhancement Of Anion Exchange Membrane Based Fuel Cells (Aemfcs) And Water Electrolyzers (Aemels) By Understanding Degradation Mechanisms, Noor Ui Hassan
Theses and Dissertations
The past several years have seen remarkable progress in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, showing excellent efficiency and significant cost reduction. The intermittent nature of renewable resources requires them to be integrated with energy storage systems that can hold or convert this excess energy into other forms. Though batteries have been the most popular, it is also possible to store the energy as chemicals and fuels, such as hydrogen (H2). Hydrogen generation from water electrolysis has been receiving significant attention in recent years. Among the existing water electrolysis technologies, anion exchange membrane electrolyzers (AEMELs) are …
The Power Of Story In Developing A Cycle Of Efficacy For Teachers And Students, Melissa Renee Ewing
The Power Of Story In Developing A Cycle Of Efficacy For Teachers And Students, Melissa Renee Ewing
Theses and Dissertations
There is scarce nationwide evidence of the impact of instruction on student achievement in the area of writing (Coker et al., 2018; Persky et al., 2003; National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2002). Standardized writing assessment has shifted to text-dependent analysis, which requires students to read and analyze a passage and then compose an essay in response to a text dependent prompt. This type of writing requires students to understand how and why authors make decisions and then support a claim with analysis. This multiple-case, action research study followed three elementary teachers as they reflected on a journey resulting in transformation …

Arctic Ocean And Subarctic Seas Dynamics In A Changing Climate, Sarah B. Hall
Arctic Ocean And Subarctic Seas Dynamics In A Changing Climate, Sarah B. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Salinity is the primary determinant of the Arctic Ocean’s vertical density stratification in the upper ocean, which has major implications on the ocean’s physical dynamics alongside a period of rapidly declining sea ice. In recent decades, the Arctic’s freshwater content (FWC) has increased as a result of the accumulation of freshwater source inputs. Additional freshwater exported to the North Atlantic may hinder overturning processes that are vital to the regulation of global climate. This dissertation employs in situ measurements, satellite observations, and ocean model simulations to better understand salinity and freshwater changes in the Arctic Ocean during this changing climate. …
Speculative Pasts: American Historical Fiction In An Age Of Empire, Gregory William Deinert
Speculative Pasts: American Historical Fiction In An Age Of Empire, Gregory William Deinert
Theses and Dissertations
This study identifies a new generic form termed here the “Speculative Historical Novel” within contemporary American fiction. The works that Speculative Pasts collect all agonize over the erasure of the past, and question how we can incorporate history into the present while accepting that full recuperation may be impossible. In their emphasis on the erasure of the past, these novels trace the manifold silences created by the imperial conquest of the New World and articulate how this past continues to structure the lived experiences of everyone on this continent.
This speculation is, on the one hand, necessarily suppositional. When faced …

Embodied Participation In Digital Publics: Somnambulance, Surveillance, And The Construction Of Identity, Adam S. Padgett
Embodied Participation In Digital Publics: Somnambulance, Surveillance, And The Construction Of Identity, Adam S. Padgett
Theses and Dissertations
In our current information landscape, routine surveillance has changed the nature of rhetorical engagement in public spheres. Scholarship in publics theory have done productive work to map out the complex field of discursive participation. Michael Warner has demonstrated how, through the circulation of common texts, people no longer have to be in public in order to participate in publics. However, in the wake of ubiquitous surveillance, this focus on publicness has offered little attention to privacy in publics theory. I argue that legal and postmodern theories of bodies-as-texts is problematic for reading and writing bodies online. Intersecting with embodiment and …
