Radiotherapy For Elderly Patients With Glioblastoma: An Assessment Of Hypofractionation And Modern Treatment Techniques, Jennifer K. Matsui, Jiayi Huang, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a disease with a poor prognosis. For decades, radiotherapy has played a critical role in the management of GBM. The standard of care radiation prescription is 60 Gy in 30 fractions, but landmark trials have historically excluded patients older than 70 years. Currently, there is considerable variation in the management of elderly patients with GBM. Shortened radiation treatment (hypofractionated) regimens have been explored since conventional treatment schedules are lengthy and many elderly patients have functional, cognitive, and social limitations. Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of hypofractionated radiotherapy (40 Gy in 15 fractions) to treat elderly or …

The Sound Of Music: From Increased Personalization To Therapeutic Values, Ileana Caceres, Souvick Ghosh

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Introduction. Music providers like Spotify leverage music recommendation systems to connect users with relevant music. Based on content-based and collaborative-filtering statistical methods, these machine learning algorithms quantify user-song probabilities and present the highest-ranked songs. However, most music providers do not fully address their users’ music seeking and retrieval needs. Likewise, the fields of Recommender Systems, Music Recommendation Systems (MRS) and Music Information Retrieval (MIR) remain disconnected from real-world use cases of music seeking. Method. In this conceptual paper, we review the literature of the Recommender Systems, MRS, MIR and Music Therapy (MT) academic fields. We discuss trends towards greater user …

Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic …

A Perspective On Machine Learning And Data Science For Strongly Correlated Electron Problems, Steven Johnston, Ehsan Khatami, Richard Scalettar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Numerical approaches to the correlated electron problem have achieved considerable success, yet are still constrained by several bottlenecks, including high order polynomial or exponential scaling in system size, long autocorrelation times, challenges in recognizing novel phases, and the Fermion sign problem. Methods in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence, and data science promise to help address these limitations and open up a new frontier in strongly correlated quantum system simulations. In this paper, we review some of the progress in this area. We begin by examining these approaches in the context of classical models, where their underpinnings and application can be …

The schizophoran superfamily Ephydroidea (Diptera: Cyclorrhapha) includes eight families, ranging from the well-known vinegar flies (Drosophilidae) and shore flies (Ephydridae), to several small, relatively unusual groups, the phylogenetic placement of which has been particularly challenging for systematists. An extraordinary diversity in life histories, feeding habits and morphology are a hallmark of fly biology, and the Ephydroidea are no exception. Extreme specialization can lead to “orphaned” taxa with no clear evidence for their phylogenetic position. To resolve relationships among a diverse sample of Ephydroidea, including the highly modified flies in the families Braulidae and Mormotomyiidae, we conducted phylogenomic sampling. Using exon …

The Constitutionality Of Texas’ Executive Orders Impacting The U.S.–Mexico Border, Beckett Cantley, Geoffrey Dietrich

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

“Federalism, central to the constitutional design, adopts the principle that both the National and State Governments have elements of sovereignty the other is bound to respect. From the existence of two sovereigns follows the possibility that laws can be in conflict or at cross-purposes.” The Supremacy Clause “provides a clear rule that federal law shall be the supreme Law of the Land.” Under this principle, Congress may preempt state laws that interfere or conflict with federal laws. United States courts have held that issues of immigration, and as they relate to national security or border security, are clearly federal and …

The Affection In Between : From Common Sense To Sensing In Common, April Flakne Oct 2022

The Affection In Between : From Common Sense To Sensing In Common, April Flakne

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Exposing a fundamental but forgotten capacity to sense with others, this fresh approach to ethics centers on expressive, moving bodies in everyday affective encounters.

Common sense has yet to yield its golden promise: robust selves, a stable sense of reality, and bonds of solidarity. The Affection in Between argues that reimagining common sense involves tackling two intractable philosophical puzzles together: the problems of sensory integration and of “other minds.” Construing common sense as either an individual cognitive capacity or a communal body of beliefs and practices, as our tradition of philosophical and political thought has done for too long, constricts …
